Abstract
Description
An spruch 1.The present invention relates to a method for operating Molten carbonate fuel cells according to the generic term of An saying 1.
Molten carbonate fuel cells (Molten Carbonate Fuel Cells, MCFC) are known per se. A melt serves as the electrolyte one or more alkali metal carbonates, which in a fine porous se electrolyte matrix is included. The electrolyte separates them Anode layer from the cathode layer and seals the gas spaces of anode and cathode against each other. When operating a Molten carbonate fuel cell becomes a sow to the cathode layer Gas mixture containing material and carbon dioxide, mostly air and Carbon dioxide supplied. The oxygen is reduced and with the carbon dioxide converted to carbonate ions, which in the electrical hiking lyten. Hydrogen-containing fuel gas is added to the anode layer led, the hydrogen oxidizes and with the carbonate ions is converted from the melt into water and carbon dioxide. The Carbon dioxide is circulated into the cathode layer returned. The operating temperature is between 550 ° C and 750 ° C. The exhaust air of such fuel cells essentially contains water vapor and carbon dioxide. Molten carbonate Fuel cells and processes for their production are, for example, in DE 43 03 136 C1 and DE 195 15 457 C1. The Commercial use of the exhaust air generally takes place for energy Power generation, for example for power generation in a steam turbine.
Im Inneren des Schutzgehäuses ist zu diesem Zweck ein Gebläse vorgesehen.DE 44 25 186 C1 discloses a fuel cell arrangement and a method for operating such a fuel cell arrangement known. A fuel cell arrangement, for example with enamel carbonate fuel cells, is from a thermally insulated Surround protective housing, in the interior of which the anode exhaust gas flow and the cathode gas flow can circulate freely. Inside the A blower is provided for this purpose in the protective housing.
The metallic materials that are used in molten carbonate fuel cells or in the arrangements just described are exposed to extremely corrosive conditions, because on the one hand there are oxidizing gases and on the other hand the high temperatures and the alkali carbonate melt accelerate the corrosion. This affects, for example. In addition to the mostly nickel-containing electrode material itself also the housing, the inlet and outlet for cathode and anode gas and in the arrangement described above, the inner wall of the protective housing and also the blower. Suitable, sufficiently corrosion-resistant metallic materials usually contain a relatively high proportion of chromium (e.g. chromium-containing stainless steels). Such metallic materials containing chrome, however, also form corrosion products over time. In addition to solid corrosion products such as LiFeO 2 , LiCrO 2 and spinels, there are also corrosion products that are soluble in the electrolyte. Most of these are chromates. Chromate ions are very readily soluble in alkali metal carbonate melts (according to HS Hsu, JH DeVan, M. Howell, J. electrochem. Soc. 134, 2146 (1987) about 13.7% by weight). The exhaust air therefore contains chromate, mainly of the types K 2 CrO 4 and Li 2 CrO 4 , the potassium salt being thermodynamically preferred.
However, these chromates (VI) are toxic and beyond carcinogenic. Because in the manufacture and operation of Molten carbonate fuel cells on chromium-containing, corrosion permanent materials, the exhaust air is this burning fabric cells are almost always contaminated with chromates. This Impurities prevent the coal from being used commercially proportion of the exhaust air, for example in the food industry or as a starting material in chemical processes.
The object of the present invention is therefore a Process for operating molten carbonate fuel cells o. g. Provide a way in which the exhaust air is free of chromate Impurities.
The solution is a procedure with the characteristics of the contractor saying 1. According to the invention it is therefore provided that the exhaust air in contact with a wash solution prior to commercial use brought, which is an aqueous solution of at least one inorganic and / or organic barium salt and / or at least one contains inorganic and / or organic lead salt to in the Exhaust air possibly present alkali chromates (III) and / or in particular Precipitate alkali chromates (VI). The chromate Contamination can be reduced so far that the carbon dioxide part of the exhaust air can be used commercially.
Advantageous further developments result from the dependent claims chen.
The exhaust air from molten carbonate fuel cells typically sets usually nitrogen, water, oxygen and carbon dioxide together. The nitrogen content comes from using Air as cathode gas. For commercial use of the Carbon dioxide is used for the targeted synthesis of carbon dioxide Instead of air, fuel cells use pure oxygen as the cathode gas used, so that the exhaust air only water, oxygen and Contains carbon dioxide. If this gas is outside the fuel cell is dried, carbon dioxide and acid remain substance, the carbon dioxide content by a catalytic after combustion with carbon monoxide can be increased again. However, the chromate impurities are retained, so that the commercially usable gas is still small may contain toxic and carcinogenic chromates.
Bariumsalze enthal
ten. Dabei entstehen in Wasser nahezu unlösliche Barium- bzw.
Bleichromate:
The exhaust air from fuel cells is cleaned according to the invention in that the soluble chromates are brought into an insoluble form. This is advantageously done before the enrichment of the carbon dioxide, ie before the drying of the exhaust air and the afterburning of the oxygen. For this purpose, the exhaust air is brought into contact with a slightly alkaline washing solution containing barium or lead (for example an aqueous solution of the chlorides or bromides). The washing solution can contain a solution of one or more organic and / or inorganic lead or barium salts. Barium or lead chromates, which are almost insoluble in water, are formed:
Me2+ + CrO4 2- → MeCrO4 (Me = Pb, Ba) (I)Me 2+ + CrO 4 2- → MeCrO 4 (Me = Pb, Ba) (I)
Das Löslichkeitsprodukt für BaCrO4 beträgt etwa 7 × 10-9 mol2/l2.The solubility of these chromates is below 10 -4 %, ie these chromates are almost insoluble in water. The solubility product for BaCrO 4 is about 7 × 10 -9 mol 2 / l 2 .
fate, bspw. Alkalimetallsulfate, enthält:
It can happen that the exhaust air then contains traces of the water-soluble lead or barium salts from the washing solution due to the barium- or lead-containing washing solution. Then, after the precipitation of the chromates, the exhaust air can be brought into contact with a second washing solution which contains an aqueous solution of one or more inorganic and / or organic sulphates, for example alkali metal sulfates:
Me2+ + SO4 2- → MeSO4 (Me = Pb, Ba) (II)Me 2+ + SO 4 2- → MeSO 4 (Me = Pb, Ba) (II)
Bariumsulfat, vorzuziehen. The solubility products of barium sulfate and lead sulfate are below those of the chromates, for example 1.07 × 10 -10 mol 2 / l 2 for barium sulfate and 1.82 × 10 -8 mol 2 / l 2 for lead sulfate. Since the solubility product of barium sulfate is two orders of magnitude lower, the cleaning of the exhaust air via the "barium path", ie due to the precipitation of barium chromate and possibly barium sulfate, is preferable.
The precipitation reactions can be carried out by techniques known per se be realized, for example by introducing the exhaust air into the ent speaking solutions or by contacting exhaust air and Washing solution in a fluidized bed reactor or in a spray device direction.
This means that the exhaust air from molten carbonate Fuel cells possible as a carbon dioxide supplier. In particular can the above-mentioned, described in DE 44 25 186 C1 Fuel cell assemblies as carbon dioxide, electricity and heat producer used especially for the food industry become.
