Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to polymers and their use, in particular in the field of automotive OEM painting.
A conventional car paint layer after the so-called "basecoat / clearcoat driving "with sufficient stone chip resistance and good UV protection exists in all common from a total of four different layers (four layers on construction). These four layers are applied one after the other in separate painting systems wear.
The first layer, which is located directly on the car sheet, is electrophoretically worn layer (electrocoat layer, KTL layer), which is electro-coated - mainly cathodic dip painting (KTL) - applied for corrosion protection brought and then burned.
The second layer, located on the electrocoat layer and approximately 30 to 40 µm thick is a so-called filler layer, which on the one hand protects against mechanical attacks (Stone chip protection function) offers, on the other hand, the rough surface of the body-in-white for the subsequent top coat smoothes, fills in small bumps and the electrophoretically deposited layer (KTL layer) before the natural UV beam lung protects. This layer is mostly made by applying a stove enamel, with electrostatic high-speed rotating bells and subsequent burn-in process Temperatures over 130 ° C generated.
The third layer, located on the filler layer, is the basecoat layer, which passes through appropriate pigments of the body gives the desired color. The basecoat will applied in the conventional spraying process. The layer thickness of this convention Chen basecoat layer is between about 12 to 25 microns depending on the color. Mostly this layer, particularly in the case of metallic effect paints, is applied in two process steps brings. In a first step, the application is carried out using an electrostatic high-speed ro station bells, followed by a second order using pneumatic atomization. This layer is (with the use of aqueous basecoat) with infrared radiators and / or intermediate dried by hot air convection.
The fourth and top layer on the basecoat is the. Clear coat layer, mostly in one order using electrostatic high-speed rotary bells is applied. It gives the body the desired shine and protects it Basecoat against environmental influences (UV radiation, salt water, etc.).
The basecoat and the clearcoat are then applied together burns.
With regard to environmental protection, more and more automotive OEM coatings are being applied Water based used. Aqueous automotive serial paints are well established and an indispensable part of industrial application, not only for reasons of environmental protection. Aqueous coating systems are no longer just a necessity agile evils, but represent technology and the potential of opportunities is a serious alternative. Nevertheless, the requirements in the has increased significantly in recent years. The need to increase productivity vity with a simultaneous further reduction in emission values creates new requirements in aqueous basecoat systems. The compatibility is particularly worth mentioning with low-emission clear varnishes (powder, water-clear varnish, powder slurry) and that shorter processing cycles necessary increase in application security. So is it z. B. very difficult, with a water-based paint of the prior art, together with a powder clear coat to achieve the required adhesion properties.
In particular, the compatibility with clear varnishes based on powder slurry has been proven particularly high demands on aqueous basecoats. Under the term powder slurry is understood to be a suspension of paint particles and water, which usually consists of 60 to 70 wt .-% water and 30 to 40 wt .-% solids. Such together Examples are from DE 196 13 547 C2 and DE 196 18 657 A1 known. The use of such a powder slurry is characterized by a special simple application of the appropriate paints. So such a varnish can a conventional spray gun can be applied; d. H. that on the use of specially separated electrostatic painting devices, such as those used for painting Powder coatings are necessary, can be dispensed with. An undesirable effect that when using conventional water-based basecoats under a clear coat layer of powder slurry is observed, the so-called "mud cracking". With this The term describes a surface condition of the hardened paint surface ben, which is due to tearing of the paint layers and with the appearance a dried out desert soil is comparable.
Furthermore, in the case of an aqueous metallic basecoat, the so-called "gassing stabilizer" lity "is particularly important. The term" gassing stability "denotes the property of an unprotected metallic effect paint containing aluminum particles, in which the Aluminum particles do not mix with the solvent water to form hydrogen react.
One way of influencing this property is to use speci Bright, specially treated aluminum bronzes (EP-0 321 470). Such aluminum bronzes are more expensive, less brilliant and can have undesirable properties in it Introduce system such. B. an increased tendency to agglomerate formation.
Another way to prevent gassing is to add the appropriate ad additives (EP-0 206 615 B1 and EP-0 238 222 B1). In many cases it is ad ditive, which in addition to their desired effects also negative properties in the System can bring.
Aufgrund des gesteigerten Anforderungsprofils an einen in der Automobilindustrie verwendbaren wäßrigen Basislack kommen den rheologischen Eigenschaften eines solchen eine erhöhte Bedeutung zu.Due to the increased requirement profile for one in the automotive industry usable aqueous basecoat come the rheological properties of a such an increased importance.
The term "rheological properties" means that the lacquer is a on the one hand during the spraying process, i.e. at high shear speeds, such a low one Viscosity has that it can be easily atomized, and on the other hand when it hits it such a high viscosity on the substrate, i.e. at low shear rates has that it is sufficiently stable and shows no runner formation. Training too a pronounced metallic effect is related to these properties.
To improve the rheological properties and to improve the training of the Metallic effects are described special additives (EP-0 281 936). Here han These are special layered silicates that contain considerable amounts of alkali or earth contain alkali ions. These ions often lead because of their water-attracting effects poor condensation resistance in the overall structure of an automobile layering.
It is therefore an endeavor of the paint manufacturers to add such additives if possible avoid and use as a binder those polymers that the desired Bring your own properties, so-called "tailor-made" polymers.
One of the most important representatives of this species are aqueous dispersions of ver wetted polymer microparticles.
For example, EP-0 502 934 describes a microgel dispersion. This serves both for ver improvement of the rheological properties, as well as an increase in gassing stability of aqueous metallic basecoats. The production of this micro gel dispersion NEN is carried out by a one-stage polycondensation of a polyester polyol with a Aminoplast resin (melamine resin) in the aqueous phase.
The use of this microgel in basecoats in automotive painting Bodies has the disadvantage that the adhesion between the basecoat and one on it, from a powder clearcoat or a powder clearcoat slurry applied clear coat not the one prescribed by the automotive industry Meets requirements.
Furthermore, from DE 195 04 015 A1 microgels are known which are produced by polymerization an ethylenically monofunctional compound (polyacrylate) with at least one ethylenically di- or multifunctional compound in the presence of a polyester getting produced. The polyester acts as an emulsifier and stabilizer.
These microgels have the disadvantage that the rheological properties of this lac ke no longer meet the increased requirements of the automotive industry. This is particularly evident in terms of viscosity requirements on the one hand and stability on the other.
Using these microgels, it is not possible to provide an aqueous basecoat which has a maximum viscosity of 120 mPa.s at a shear rate of 1,000 s -1 and is so stable that the necessary layer thicknesses of 20-30 µm (in Depending on the respective color) can be achieved without running.
The object of the present invention is to provide a polymer which Use in coloring or colorless coating compositions, esp especially in basecoats and clearcoats for the automotive industry against both the necessary rheological properties, the decorative properties the gassing stability, as well as the necessary adhesion under a paint Gives the basis of powder or powder slurry.
This object is achieved by a polymer which can be obtained from a polymerization in the aqueous phase of a monomer mixture
- a) 50 bis 98 Gew.-% mindestens einer ethylenisch monofunktionellen Verbin dung; a) 50 to 98% by weight of at least one ethylenically monofunctional compound dung;
-
Verbindung;
in Gegenwart eines Polyesterpolyols mit einem zahlenmittleren Molekularge wicht von 500 bis 10.000, einer Säurezahl zwischen 22 und 224 und einer OH- Zahl zwischen 60 bis 400 durchgeführt wird;
wobei die Summe der Gewichtsanteile der Komponenten (i) bis (ii) 100 Gew.-% beträgt;b) 2 to 50% by weight of at least one ethylenically di- or multifunctional compound;
in the presence of a polyester polyol with a number-average molecular weight of 500 to 10,000, an acid number between 22 and 224 and an OH number between 60 and 400 is carried out;

gefolgt von einer Umsetzung des aus der Polymerisation erhaltenen Produkts mit ei nem Vernetzer.followed by reaction of the product obtained from the polymerization with egg a crosslinker.
This object is also achieved by a polymer obtainable by a polymer tion in the aqueous phase of a monomer mixture of at least one ethylenically monofunctional compound in the presence of a polyester polyol with a zah len average molecular weight of 500 to 10,000, an acid number between 22 and 224 and an OH number between 60 to 400; followed by an implementation of the from the Polymerization product obtained with a crosslinker.
These polymers have the advantage over the microgels of the prior art part that they have a metallic base coat excellent gassing stability as well lent rheological properties, being with this metallic base coat is possible for the first time in conventional multi-layer coatings for automobiles ter a clear coat of a powder clear coat or a powder slurry clear coat to achieve sufficient adhesion and condensation resistance without Ver the use of a powder clear lacquer slurry, the so-called "mud cracking" effect occurs.
The rheological properties of the coating compositions produced using these polymers are significantly improved over those of the prior art. Thus, it can with a varnish containing polymer of the invention (based on the solids content) with play, in an amount of 20 wt .-%, a viscosity of at most 100 mPa.s are obtained at a shear rate of 1,000 -1 wherein the Trockfilmdicke the cured basecoat layer is at least 20 µm without runners being observed.
Particularly good results can be obtained if this occurs during the polymeri sation present polyester polyol on average at least one free car Boxylgruppe per molecule, which consists of trimellitic acid or Trimellithsäureanhy drid comes from. This enables a particularly high reaction speed during of networking.
A possible explanation for this fact could be the comparatively strong acidity the carboxyl group of trimellitic acid.
Particularly suitable examples of the ethylenically monofunctional compound are Alkyl esters or hydroxyalkyl esters of acrylic or methacrylic acid. The polymer according to the invention is polymerized on the basis of the known Processes suitable for radical polymerization in the aqueous phase. To here is the process of emulsion polymerization.
It is also possible, but not essential, for the emulsion polymerization to take place below Use of a nozzle jet disperser or a water jet emulsifier to be led. In this way, more uniform particle sizes can be achieved.
The polymerization initiators which are customary for emulsion polymerization can be used Peroxodisulfate, hydrogen peroxide or organic peroxides who used the. There are also other initiators such. B. azoisobutyronitrile can be used.
Polymerization initiation by means of a redox system has proven particularly advantageous proven. This method is well known in emulsion polymerization technology the fact that hydroperoxides with suitable reducing agents already at very low temperatures are induced to radical decay.
Suitable reducing agents are, for example, sodium metabisulfite or its form aldehyde addition product (Na hydroxymethanesulfinate). Iso is also very suitable ascorbic acid. The combination of tert-butyl hydroperoxide is particularly advantageous, (Iso) ascorbic acid and iron (II) sulfate.
The use of this mixture has the advantage that the polymerization takes place in space temperature can be started.
The polymer according to the invention can be used especially for aqueous coatings can be used.
A preferred form of use of the invention is the use in an aqueous base paints, in particular effect base paints for painting automobiles.
The polymers according to the invention give this aqueous coating together excellent application behavior and excellent decoration tive properties, which can be seen, for example, on the basis of a pronounced metal effect, very good resistance to vertical runoff, no clouds, resistance against re-dissolving through different clear coats, good sanding scratch coverage and the fulfillment of the property specifications common in the automotive industry, such as Adhesion, stone chip and condensation resistance, show.
The polymers according to the invention can also be used for the production of aq clear coats, stove enamels for industrial applications and paints can be used for the construction sector.
In order to arrive at polymers in the non-aqueous phase, the inventive Polymers present in the aqueous phase, according to a special embodiment Form of the invention, the water can be removed.
This can be done by any known method, for example spray drying, Ge freeze-dry or evaporate, if necessary under reduced pressure. After dehydration, the polymer according to the invention can be in powder form or as resinous mass present.
According to a particularly preferred variant of the invention, this is in aqueous Pha This polymer is converted into a liquid organic phase. This can be done by an azeotropic distillation happen. Here you can proceed so that the water ge polymer dispersion at elevated temperature, optionally under reduced Pressure, continuously or batchwise, is placed in a reactor which is a Entrainer, d. H. a solvent or a mixture of several solvents, of which at least one forms an azeotrope with water.
The reactor is drained with a suitable condenser and water separator equipped with return to the reactor. After the boiling temperature has been reached of the azeotrope the gaseous azeotropic phase increases (i.e. entrainer and water) into the condenser. There the azeotrope condenses and runs off there in the water separator. A phase separation takes place in the water separator entrainer and water. With a continuously carried out azeotropic distillation, the entrainer flows back into the reactor, so that only small amounts of entrainer have to be used. That from the water The water obtained from the separator is free of organic components and can be used again who used to produce the aqueous polymer dispersion of the invention the.
Das Schleppmittel kann aus der Gruppe von Xylol, Butylacetat, Methylisobutylketon, Methylamylketon, Pentanol, Hexanol oder Ethylhexanol ausgewählt sein.The entrainer can be selected from the group consisting of xylene, butyl acetate, methyl isobutyl ketone, Methyl amyl ketone, pentanol, hexanol or ethyl hexanol can be selected.
A major advantage here is that the entrainer after the transfer remains there in the organic phase and for the use of solvent-containing be layering compositions is advantageous. Regarding further use these polymers present in the organic phase for the production of solvents containing coating compositions are those mentioned Entraining agents around suitable solvents.
This process stands out due to the simultaneous reuse of the Entrainer and the water produced without additional process steps an exceptional level of environmental compatibility, since there are no Benproducts arise that compared to known manufacturing processes in large large amounts.
In a special form of azeotropic distillation, this is carried out in this way leads that the aqueous polymer dispersion into a mixture of an entrainer and a high-boiling organic solvent is given. This high-boiling prevents organic solvents during the transfer into the organic phase caking of the polymer on the wall of the reactor.
The high-boiling solvent can from the group of glycol esters, such as. B. Butylgly cola acetate and / or butyl diglycol acetate can be selected.
As in the case of the entrainer, the high-boiling solvent is used likewise by a customary for a solvent-containing coating composition Component.
The polymer according to the invention obtainable in this way can be used in particular for sol medium-containing coating compositions can be used.
A preferred form of use of the invention is the use in solvent-containing Basecoats, especially effect basecoats and clearcoats, for topcoats or painting of automobiles.
This polymer according to the invention, which is present in the organic phase, imparts it solventborne coating compositions also an excellent Application behavior and excellent decorative properties, for example based on a pronounced metallic effect, very good resistance to Vertical run (SCA - Sagging Control Agent), freedom from clouds, resistance against re-dissolving through clear lacquer, good sanding scratch coverage and compliance show the property specifications common in the automotive industry.
The polymers according to the invention can also be used for the production of solvents medium-containing clear coats, coil coating compositions and stoving lacquers for industrial applications as well as paints for the building sector the.
Another special feature of the polymer according to the invention is its high Shear resistance. This property enables the use of such for the first time Polymers for the production of pigment preparations, in particular as rubbing agents for clay pastes.
