Speziell bei Holzböden haben sie die Aufgabe, die technisch notwendigen Randfugen zu kaschieren (siehe technischer Stand der Firmen Terhürne, Parador, Meister, Hoco, Neuhofer und Döllken). Die übliche Abdeckung einer Fußbodenleiste beträgt ca. 20-23 mm. Schwimmend verlegtes Parkett benötigt aber bei größeren Räumen eine breitere Fugenausbildung, damit die verleimte Bodenscheibe, je nach den jahreszeitlich unterschiedlichen Feuchteverhältnissen, einen ausreichend großen Spielraum zum Schwinden und Quellen hat.
