Description
The invention relates to a wood preservative (hereinafter also referred to as: composite material) with delayed boric acid Release, preferably to improve mechanical Properties of wood and other renewable raw materials and to protect them from animal and plant pests can be used a method for Treatment of wood and the use of wood preservatives.
The permanent protection of wood against environmental influences and damage Organisms has so far been probable from an ecological point of view lematic. A significant part of the preparations used so far te has either due to the ingredients or their Ab construction products pose a considerable risk to humans and the environment potential or the requirements in relation to a Long-term effects do not do it justice.
Preparations containing boron have been found since the end of last year Century in the field of wood protection with limited Possible uses. Are used here mainly boric acid, its derivatives and borax as well as com binary preparations, for example CFB and CKB salts (chromate Fluoride-borate or chromate-copper salt-borate mixtures). Under The currently approved wood preservatives stand out Boric acid and its derivatives through largely human or ecotoxicological harmlessness. Through your biocidal we they cover practically the entire area of in Central Europe economically relevant wood pests for con structural and decorative used wood. As examples of wood-destroying fungi and insects caused by boric acid that can be effectively combated are the real thing here House sponge (Serpula lacrimans), the house goat (Hylotropus baju lus), the sapwood beetle (Lynctus brumeus) and the knock beetle (Anobium punctatum). In addition to the relative toxicity is another advantage of boric acid and its To see salts in the fact that they act as effective Components no natural coloring and no specific smell have. This makes them, among other things, for protection, for care and for the restoration of listed cultural assets made of wood particularly attractive.
A more extensive substitution of organic synthetic wood preservatives through preparations containing boric acid, in particular with weather-exposed woods, however, is the big disadvantage opposite that boric acid and its salts easily by water be washed out and thus in a humid atmosphere wood protecting effect decreases rapidly. Therefore, boron Wood preservatives containing acid are not suitable for outdoor use be set.
Known measures to prevent leaching with boron acid-treated woods are the following dealing with the respective woods with varnishes, glazes and waxes, on the other hand the addition of fixing additives to the basic formulation tion. In addition to the additional procedural effort for surface treatments are heavily dependent on thickness and Quality of the coatings characteristic. With progress This reduces the aging of the coating layers the biocidal effect on the level of untreated woods. The Addition of chromium (III) and copper (II) salts (CKB salts) works by modifying the cell walls of the wood Reduction of the release of boric acid or boric acid rivate, but is considering the possibility of staging of these heavy metal ions into the environment and associated with it Problems in the disposal of appropriately treated wood zer very questionable.
It is also known that boric acid esters of various Hy droxyl compounds in combination preparations for wood protection Find application, the biocidal only after hydrolysis form effective boric acid. Based on organic solvents (e.g. toluene) the advantage lies in the increase in Penetra tion avoiding vacuum impregnation processes. Connect one de superheated steam treatment at 100-200 ° C causes the hydrolysis of the respective Borates (US 4,076,871). The aromati used solvents and the energy-intensive process of hydro This process is ecologically questionable and lysing economically complex. The treatment is also more dimensionally stable Woods problematic. Similarly, esters of boron acid with meta- or para-cresol, phenol, aliphatic alcohol oils and diols in combination with organic and metal organic biocides in high-boiling organic solvents means used (EP 246 477). The disadvantages of these preparations be are in the environmentally harmful solvents and in ver course of the boric acid ester hydrolysis released phenolic Links.
In recent years, attempts have been made to achieve this through effective Embedding wood-protecting substances in an inorganic me talloxide matrix delayed release and long-term i to achieve ge biocidal effects. There was great progress in it, analogous to the embedding of other antimicrobial substances zen in a metal oxide matrix (DE 43 29 279 A1) boric acid in a Incorporate sol-gel matrix (EP 747 184). It was found but when impregnating different types of wood that despite significant improvements over the prior art the release profile of boric acid from the wood samples Long-term irrigation needs improvement because boron acid and its salts due to their small molecular size and good solubility relatively easy from the porous metal oxide Diffuse matrix.
So there is an optimal coating material for the past combating wood protection in weather-exposed areas range, which does not consider human or ecotoxicological Chen contains active substances, solvents or fixing additives and is stable and effective for a long time, is currently not available supply.
A discloses boric acid derivatives for hydrophobic purposes beers of wood to use, which can be made by reacting boron acid with hydrophobic, optionally hydroxy, carboxy and / or amino functionalized acidic hydrocarbon compounds with 5 receives up to 60 carbon atoms.
The object of the invention is therefore composite materials especially for use in preventive and combative To develop wood preservation that is not human or ecotoxicological contain dangerous ingredients, a delayed Have release of the biocidal active ingredient and thus a Long-term protection against animal and vegetable wood pests Ensure even under strong weather conditions.
This task is performed by composites with the characteristics according to An Proverb 1 or by a method with the features ge solved according to claim 6. Advantageous embodiments of the Er finding result from the dependent claims.
Surprisingly, this task was solved in particular be that slowly hydrolyzing, immobile, organic boron acid esters based on cellulose ethers or esters by a sol-gel process in an inorganic Oxide matrix homogeneously molecularly dispersed where only during a delayed hydrolysis process in the Matrix diffusible boric acid due to diffusing water re is formed.
The invention therefore relates to composites based on inorganic oxides, which act as a matrix for the homogeneously distributed slow hydrolyzing organic boric acid esters and which is characterized by a delayed release of boric acid distinguished. The boric acid esters result in the reaction with Water boric acid. The hydrolization is so slow (i.e. with such a slow reaction rate) that the Boric acid release compared to conventional compositions tongues delayed.
The composites are obtained in a simple manner by first inorganic sol by hydrolysis of one or more alk oxides or halides of the elements Si, Zn, Ti, Zr or Al and subgroup of the periodic table is produced:

Mischungen;

R = organic residue, e.g. B. alkyl, acyl; X = halogen radical).
The hydrolysis can by small amounts of mineral acid or aq alkalis are catalyzed. For hydrolysis are preferred Wise stoichiometric amounts of water are used in the structure ten Sol to keep the water content as low as possible and one premature hydrolysis of the added organic boric acid To prevent derivatives. The stable brine of inorganic oxides in the simplest case consist of nm-sized spheroids Particles in alcohol or any other, mixed with water ren organic solvents such as dioxane, acetone or acetone tril.
For economic and ecological reasons, SiO 2 is primarily used as the inorganic matrix, the sols of which are obtained by hydrolysis of tetraethoxysilane. By adding various other oxidic species of the specified elements, a targeted influence on the properties of the SiO 2 matrix is possible.
For example, the targeted integration of Al 2 O 3 , TiO 2 , ZrO 2 or ZnO allows the modification of mechanical properties such as hardness and abrasion resistance. Increased hydrophobins bie the metal oxide matrix, which makes an additional contribution to the penetration of water and the washability of the boric acid, is by the incorporation of R-SiO3 / 2 - and R 2 -SiO-Frag elements (R = organic radical , for example alkyl, aminoalkyl, epoxyalkyl) possible. Suitable precursors in the production of organically modified SiO 2 sols are z. B. alkyl trialkoxy, dial kyl dialkoxy, amino or glycidyloxy alkyltrialkoxysilanes. Modifying the described composite layers by incorporating phosphorus oxides increases their flame-retardant effect.
The metal oxide sols described in (1) are mixed with suitable organic boric acid derivatives (OBD) after the hydrolysis reaction, the proportion of the boron compound in the composite preferably being able to vary between 2 and 40% by weight, and composite sols are obtained which are also the subject of the invention:
(MOm)sol + OBD → (MOm/OBD)sol (MO m ) sol + OBD → (MO m / OBD) sol
To avoid premature hydrolysis, the boric acid Ester to the largely anhydrous metal oxide sol only immediately bar added before the coating process. The in each possible inorganic oxide matrix incorporated homogeneously, if possible are slow or difficult to hydrolyze baric acid derivatives Esters of bar acid. suitable Polyhydroxy compounds are soluble esters and ethers of Cellulose with a variable degree of substitution, substitution pattern (e.g. R = methyl, carboxymethyl, hydroxyethyl, hydroxypro pyl) and molecular weight. These compounds form with boron acid also in aqueous solution cyclic esters (e.g. boric acid al kylene esters, boric acid spiro-bis [alkylene esters]). Form as well Monosaccharides with vicinal, cis-hydroxyl groups and various polyhydric alcohols such as pentaerythritol with boric acid re stable, cyclic complexes. Because of their high water solubility However, such complexes are suitable for use in wit resistant composite layers with delayed boric acid Release not suitable as it is in contact with water Diffuse complex out of the metal oxide layers.
It has also been found that it is advantageous to use the com positive sols to a certain extent (up to an amount of Add 30% by weight based on the composite) polymeric additives. So the addition z. B. natural resins such as rosin, Shellac, damar, mastic or alcohol-soluble syntheti polymers such as phenolic resins, aldehyde resins for inorganic the improved flexibility of the relatively brittle matrix Metal oxide layers as well as additional protection against that Penetration of water in the composite layer and elution the biocidally active boric acid and thus causes a further ver delayed release of boric acid.
The composite sols produced in the manner described above are low to medium viscosity liquids, which depending on Hy drolysis conditions have a pH of 3-5 or 8-9. By neutralizing the composite brine, prolonged heating or Concentrate by evaporating the organic solvent Gelation takes place (sol-gel process).
In ähnlicher Weise ergeben die Kompositsole beim Beschichten
beliebiger Substrate durch Verflüchtigung des Lösungsmittels
feste gelierte Filmschichten. Eine allseitige, den beschichte
ten Gegenstand an der gefährdeten Oberfläche vollständig bedec
kende Beschichtung wird bevorzugt.
Similarly, when coating any substrates by volatilizing the solvent, the composite sols give solid, gelled film layers. An all-round coating which completely covers the coated object on the endangered surface is preferred.
(MOm/OBD)sol → (MOm/OBD)gel (MO m / OBD) sol → (MO m / OBD) gel
You can easily use all established coating techniques, as they are common in wood protection, e.g. B. diving, spraying, pouring ß, pressure or vacuum impregnation to use wooden beams to be coated with the composite sols. The gel films can at Required by drying at elevated temperatures as a result the removal of residual solvents and thermal gel mechanically solidified.
The dried (cross-linked) composites can also be different in layer form, e.g. B. be provided as a powder.
The composites obtained according to the invention (in particular composite layers) show a greatly delayed release of boric acid, since the acid must first be formed by hydrolysis and then diffuse through the oxide matrix in order to be biocidal.
(MOm/OBD)gel + H2O → (MOm)gel + Borsäure.(MO m / OBD) gel + H 2 O → (MO m ) gel + boric acid.
Hierbei wirken erfindungsgemäß 5 verzögernde Prozesse zusammen:
According to the invention, 5 delaying processes interact here:
The penetration of the water required for hydrolysis (from the environment, e.g. air humidity or splash water) inhibited by the metal oxide matrix.
Slowly hydrolyzing organic boric acid Derivatives used.
Their hydrolysis is also due to the cage effect the matrix (hydrolysis products can only difficult to balance out by diffusion).
The diffusion of the boric acid formed from the layer is complicated by the metal oxide matrix.
Any polymeric additives added cause one additional protection against hydrolysis because of its Hydrophobicity be the penetration of water into the layer prevent.

2 g of hydroxypropyl cellulose (Klucel E®, MW = 80,000) are stirred with 2 g of boric acid in 20 ml of ethanol (96%) for 4 h at room temperature. The mixture is then added to the pure SiO 2 sol A with vigorous stirring and the mixture is stirred at room temperature for a further 2 h. A clear, stable Sol I (about 16% by weight of boric acid and about 16% by weight of hydroxypropyl cellulose based on the solids content) is obtained.
The described modified SiO 2 sols E and I were applied with a LBM 70 laboratory coating machine from MABA Spezi almaschinen GmbH / Wolfen by pouring onto acetyl cellulose film. After drying for 24 hours at room temperature, clear (optically transparent, non-cloudy), scratch-resistant composite layers are formed.
The analytical evidence of the delayed release of boric acid was carried out by washing out a corresponding model layer on acetyl cellulose film. A film provided on one side with the respective coating and having an area of 450 cm 2 was washed out in 600 ml of intensively stirred water (dissolution tester Pharmatest PTWS 3). At certain intervals, samples were taken for inductively coupled plasma (atomic emission spectroscopic) determination of the boron content. Table 1 shows the delayed release of boric acid from composite layers with homogeneous embedded boric acid derivatives in comparison with a composite layer consisting of an inorganic oxide matrix with embedded boric acid.
Test blocks made of pine wood were used with the brines E and I soaked and after drying a six-week mushroom treatment with the test mushroom Coniophora puteana (accordingly subjected to the test method DIN-EN 113). None of the one A loss of mass occurred when the test specimen was placed.
