The invention relates to a method for the manufacture of lung Oxymethylenhomo- or oxymethylene copolymers by polymerizing Trioxai alone or with known for the polymerization of trioxane mi comonomers in Gegenwar of cationically active catalysts and 0.1 b'v 50 mole percent sulfone in Tempera doors from 0 to 100 0 C.
There is already a process for the production of high molecular weight polyoxymethylene by 'Homo known polymerization of trioxane, in which trioxane in solid or molten state or ir Form of a solution or dispersion with a cationic catalyst, such as a Lewis acid, a Friedel-Crafts catalyst, coordination complexes of these compounds or the salt-like compounds derived from these compounds, is polymerized.
Weise wie folgt einteilen:However, this known homopolymerization of trioxane does not always proceed in a satisfactory manner, since the polymerization yield is generally low; moreover, the method using a specific polymerization catalyst requires an extremely long polymerization time, and the degree of polymerization of the polymer thus prepared is sometimes so low that these products cannot be used as molding materials.
There are also numerous publications known from which it can be seen that various copolymers containing oxymethylene units can be prepared from trioxane and various monomers by the catalytic action of cationic catalysts. The known monomers which can be copolymerized with trioxane can generally be conveniently classified as follows:
1. Cyclische Äther (USA.-Patentschrift 3 027 352, britische Patentschrift 956 457 und 972 425, belgische Patentschrift 626 154 und 635 754),1. Cyclic ethers (U.S. Patent 3,027,352, British Patent 956,457 and 972,425, Belgian Patent specification 626 154 and 635 754),
2. Spirocyclische Orthocarbonsäureester (japanische Patentschrift 3708/65),2. Spirocyclic orthocarboxylic acid esters (Japanese Patent 3708/65),
3. Vinylverbindungen (USA.-Patentschrift 3087913, britische Patentschrift 911 960 und 926 904, belgische Patentschriften 610 223, 610 580 und 635 754),3. Vinyl compounds (U.S. Pat. 3087913, British Pat. 911 960 and 926 904, Belgian Pat Patents 610 223, 610 580 and 635 754),
4. Cyclische Ester (britische Patentschrift 926 904),4. cyclic esters (British Patent 926 904);
5. Cyclische Siloxane (japanische Patentschrift 17 080/64),5. cyclic siloxanes (Japanese patent 17 080/64),
6. Aldehyde (belgische Patentschrift 609 208) und6. Aldehydes (Belgian patent 609 208) and
7. andere Verbindungen (USA.-Patentschrift 3 012 990 und belgische Patentschrift 651645).7. Other compounds (U.S. Patent 3,012,990 and Belgian Patent 651645).
cyclische Oxalsäureester oder Sulfonverbindungen in Mengen von 0,1 bis 50 Mol-Copolymers of trioxane and the above-mentioned comonomers have excellent thermal stability, but the polymerization yields are generally very low. It is known that the thermal stability of such copolymers generally increases with increasing comonomer content; however, as will be shown, the polymerization yield deteriorates with increasing comonomer content. In addition, the degree of polymerization of the copolymers is reduced in this case.
It is also known to produce polyoxymethylenes by adding trioxane and cyclic carboxylic acid anhydrides, cyclic oxalic acid esters or sulfone compounds in amounts of 0.1 to 50 mol.

Erfindungsgemäß jedoch wird die Polymerisation in Gegenwart einer Sulfonverbindung als Beschleuniger durchgerührt.wherein X is a methylene or substituted methylene group, an oxygen atom, a sulfur atom or means a sulfonic group. This patent therefore relates to a process for the production of Copolymers, the aforementioned compounds are used as monomers in the copolymerization. As the only sulfone compound Thionaphthendioxyd is mentioned in the French patent without this any indication of affecting the rate of polymerization and the polymerization yield in the polymerization with trioxane can be found. It is only described that the Thionaphthendioxyd is polymerizable with trioxane «^. According to the invention, however, the polymerization stirred in the presence of a sulfone compound as an accelerator.
As already mentioned above, the conventional processes for producing copolymers are with good properties because of the low polymerization yields, very uneconomical.
The object of the invention is to eliminate the described disadvantages of known methods. this will achieved by the method according to the invention.

The invention can, as already mentioned, both for the polymerization of trioxane on its own as well as for the copolymerization of trioxane with others known comonomers are used for the polymerization with trioxane; in any case however, the trioxane should preferably be used in a practically anhydrous form. allgemeinen zwischen 0,001 und 1 Gewichtsprozent,· vorzugsweise 0,003 und 0,1 Gewichtsprozent, bezogen

If a sufficient amount of catalyst is used, a noticeable effect is achieved even if only small amounts of sulfone compounds are present, which increases the polymerization yield in a significant manner and in some cases makes the yield practically quantitative.

This relationship is based on the drawings from FIG. 1 shows the relationship between the amount of sulfone compound (dimethyl sulfone) and the polymerization yield with changing Catalyst quantities in the polymerization of trioxane, as carried out in Example 1, is graphically plotted. Be used in the copolymerization of trioxane obtained practically the same results.
This example shows the accelerating effect of each of the sulfone compounds used the solution polymerization of trioxane.
The sulfone compounds were mixed in the indicated amounts in Table I with 100 parts of trioxane and 100 parts of cyclohexane (as solvent) heated to 70 0 C. After the addition of 0.05 part of boron trifluoride diethyl etherate, the mixture thickened. After standing for 2 hours, the polymerization was stopped by adding a small amount of water. The polymer formed was ground to a fine powder. The powdery polymer was treated in a water bath with hot water after washing with acetone, by boiling in a 2% ethanolamine-acetone solution, and then washed in an acetone solution, filtered off and after repeated rinsing with acetone in vacuo at 60 c C dried. The polymerization yield is given in percent by weight, based on the amount of trioxane initially present. The above procedure was repeated in a similar manner in Examples 2-5.
The inherent viscosity of the polymer obtained in this way was measured at 60 ° C, with a Solution in 0.5% p-chlorophenol containing 2% «-pinene, was used.

This comparative example shows that compounds similar to the sulfone compounds used in the invention are similar, not only have no accelerating effect, but also the polymerization adversely affect. The method described in Example 1 (polymerization time: 1 hour) using the dimethyl sulfal listed in Table XH repeated. The results obtained are summarized in Table XlI.
