Description
The present invention relates to a method of making a High-temperature nuclear reactor fuel element with a graphite shell, which is on all sides against fission gas penetration through the incorporation of particles of pure carbon in their outer and inner surfaces are sealed and surround a fuel insert, in which the seal takes place in two temporally separated stages and after the fuel insert has been introduced into the graphite shell and closed the opening of the graphite envelope with a graphite plug in the second sealing stage while at the same time sealing the closure, the outer surface of the graphite shell is sealed.
Ein derartiges Verfahren ist bereits Gegenstand des deutschen Patents 1248 176.Such a method is already the subject of the German patent 1248 176.
For reactors, especially for high-temperature reactors, are already Fuel elements have been proposed that use a fuel, e.g. B. fuel pill, have all round surrounding, sealed graphite shell. For reactors with a Inactive cooling circuit, the fuel cladding has the task of fission to keep occurring vapor and gaseous fission products away from the cooling circuit. Therefore, the casings must protect against the passage of gas and vapor in particular Fission products must be as tight as possible. However, since graphite is porous per se, a must Fuel envelope made of graphite can be specially sealed. It has also already been suggested to bring the fuel into unsealed graphite casings, to seal them and the sealing of the overall graphite shell from the outside by means of liquid impregnation or to carry out fumigation.
However, it has been found that this seems so simple Type of seal, even if the sealing step is repeated several times, not to leads to a result that meets all requirements during the use of the fuel element in the reactor. Above all, such a sealing zone is light from the outside vulnerable and, moreover, this process brings inhomogeneities in the graphite shell with them, which give rise to the formation of cracks under extreme thermal stress.
Also is a nuclear reactor fuel element for high temperatures with a retarding fissile material, consisting entirely of graphitic carbon Shell has already been proposed whose shell apart from at least two of each other independently acting thermally conductive sealing zones a completely closed, for the gaseous or vaporous fission products has a permeable porous zone: The arrangement of this porous zone also leads to a certain inhomogeneity.
It is also known from French patent specification 1247 723, . an impermeable composite pipe by telescoping and cementing partially Manufacture raw sealed single tubes from graphite. To quickly achieve a good seal and to avoid damaging the sealed surfaces a combination of liquid impregnation with pyrolytic deposition of carbon from the gas phase applied. It is also from this patent specification known, the seal by impregnation with later carbon compounds perform. The sealing zones are on the inner and outer surface of the outer Arranged single tube. Between the sealing zones there is an unsealed, porous intermediate layer.
The invention is intended to avoid these disadvantages and a graphite shell sealed on all sides for a fuel element are created at which ensures homogeneous heat conduction over the entire thickness of the shell.
This object is achieved in that in the first Sealing stage at least the inner surface of the graphite shell is sealed and that the two sealing stages are coordinated in such a way that the carbon inclusion Sealing areas created in the inner and outer surfaces of the graphite shell against one another adjoin or penetrate each other without a porous intermediate zone.
The procedure described above is particularly applicable to Graphite fuel cladding with a wall thickness of> 10 mm. It turned out that that the usual liquid impregnation process, if one does not use special process steps applies a uniform compression only on the outer, up to about 10 mm deep Effect edge zone. The method according to the invention not only results in an almost Uniform sealing of graphite shells up to a wall thickness of approx. 20 mm by closing the pores with elemental carbon causes, resulting in an excellent seal the shell leads, but it increases the thermal conductivity of the graphite shell significantly improved. With the highly stressed fuel elements, especially In the case of high temperature reactors, it is of the utmost importance that those in the fuel generated heat is conducted as well as possible to the outside. The present proceedings With the first sealing stage from the inside, above all, the increase in thermal conductivity is ensured in the inner zone, which is particularly important because otherwise there will be a build-up of heat between Fuel and sealed outer shell can occur. Such a build-up of heat would lead to a steep temperature drop in the sealed outer zone, with its disadvantageous consequences with regard to the resulting shrinkage stress in the only alone sealed outer skin. The present method is particularly advantageous then from when the second sealing stage from the outside in connection with the first Level ensures uniform heat conduction across the entire cross-section.
It is beneficial to have this thermal conductivity especially in the inner zone by graphitizing the liquid impregnation. Finally, surprisingly be found that by the two-stage seal the anisotropy, which in almost all Artificial carbon bodies present, largely leveled with regard to thermal expansion can be. This effect also enables the individual to be more resilient Element without cracks or cracks in the graphite shell.
There are different ways of carrying out the individual sealing processes Opportunities given. According to one embodiment, the graphite shell impregnate with a completely or partially coking agent and then burn, carbon particles from the impregnating agent being deposited in the pores. But it is also possible to pyrolytically remove carbon from the gas phase, e.g. B. by Pyrolysis of a hydrocarbon compound, to be deposited in the pores of the graphite body. Within The sealing process can be carried out several times for the individual sealing stage. After the first sealing stage, it is advisable to use the fuel used for is precisely fitted, to be introduced into the graphite shell under vacuum and the To close the filling opening also under vacuum, z. B. by a plug made of graphite. Instead of a smooth stopper, a screw or bayonet connection can also be used be used. The junction between the graphite shell and the stopper can also be used as a rest fit, tight fit, interference fit or press fit, preferably as a press fit, be formed. The terms "Haftsitz", "Festsitz" and "Pressfit" are in the sense the definitions of the standards applicable in Germany (DIN sheets, in particular DIN sheet 7165).
The stopper can also be cemented with a carbonaceous putty which is then coked or graphitized by heating.
If the filling opening is closed, the second sealing stage becomes carried out, also with one or more successive sealing operations. The stopper is cemented in with the impregnation agent. It recommends however, in addition to the seal from the outside. when closing with the stopper Bring putty with, which then when firing the first external impregnation is coked with. The outer seal is made by separating from the gas phase pyrolytic carbon, the plug putty must be coked in front of the outer seal.
Der Innendichtung der Graphithülle kommt somit größte Bedeutung zu.Graphite casings for Fuel elements have good thermal conductivity and the associated good thermal shock resistance a particularly good inhibiting effect against the Diffusion of gaseous and vaporous fission products. The method according to the invention leads to a high degree of homogeneity in the seal. In addition, there is continuous storage of carbon particles associated with an increase in the detour factor. With others In other words, the path through the pores becomes for the gas molecules that nevertheless diffuse through increased, so that the dwell time and thus the longer distance alone the secondary decay of short-lived gaseous fission products into solid by-products is increased. In addition, the newly created surfaces (sealing layers) the possibility of adsorption of the gases is increased and thus also the passage reduced. Since the sealing of the envelope already begins on its inner wall, it is achieved that the fission products of the fuel feed inside the interior remain and already disintegrate there into inactive or solid by-products. In order to If the graphite shell breaks, the cooling circuit becomes contaminated largely reduced. The inner seal of the graphite shell is therefore of the greatest importance to.
The method described above is not limited to the Fuel use only has a single shell, namely the graphite shell. It can z. B. as fuel inserts such fuel particles that are coated with pyrographite are to be used. Furthermore, in the process described above to be treated graphite shell bring a fuel insert, which in turn already in a sealed graphite body, e.g. B. a cup-like insert is located. Furthermore, a graphite and fuel body can be used, the one Contains pyrographite layer as its own coating and thus at the same time an inner restricted zone forms within the graphite shell.
