It is known to produce vinyl acetate by reacting ethylene, acetic acid and oxygen at temperatures from 50 to 300 ° C and ordinary or elevated pressure in the presence of an elemental noble metal containing catalyst to produce (German Patent 1185 604).
In the known process, ethylene, acetic acid and oxygen are required as raw materials.
It has now been found that in the production of vinyl acetate by reacting Ethylene with acetic acid and oxygen in the presence of a catalyst containing elemental noble metal at 50 to 300 ° C and ordinary or elevated pressure in a particularly advantageous manner works when the reaction product is separated into a gas phase and a liquid phase, which condensed Shares wholly or partially heated in the liquid phase to 100 to 300 ° C, the resulting Acetaldehyde is oxidized to acetic acid and this is returned to the reaction.
The condensed fractions are normally used in the process of the invention without any further treatment used in the aftertreatment, in the case of the conversion of the vinyl acetate Acetaldehyde and acetic acid are formed with the water contained in the condensed fractions. Around To largely avoid the formation of polymers, it is advantageous in the condensed fractions remove dissolved oxygen prior to post-treatment. In general, it is sufficient to use the condensed Relax parts without pressure before the follow-up treatment. Here dissolved ethylene is released and still takes dissolved traces of oxygen with it. You can also use the condensed fractions before the aftertreatment add small amounts of water.
The degree of conversion of the vinyl acetate to acetaldehyde depends on the conditions such as Temperature, pressure and dwell time. The temperatures are from 100 to 300 ° C., preferably at 150 to 250 ° C. The pressures used are preferably below 50 atm and the mean residence times under 2 hours.
In order to obtain the quantities of acetaldehyde required for the oxidation to acetic acid, one can either use the entire condensed fractions in the aftertreatment and such conditions choose that only part of the vinyl acetate present is converted to acetaldehyde, or else you can only use part of the condensed fractions in the aftertreatment and the conditions choose so that practically all of the vinyl acetate is converted to acetaldehyde.

For the conversion of the acetaldehyde to acetic acid, one can use, for example, that of the aftertreatment Separate the acetaldehyde formed by distillation and in the presence of acetic acid with oxygen oxidize, whereby the vinyl acetate formed is separated from the circulating acetic acid beforehand. These Oxidation can advantageously be carried out in vertical tubes provided with cooling coils carry out. To accelerate the reaction you can work in the presence of catalysts, such as Acetates of manganese, cobalt, chromium, which are advantageously dissolved in acetic acid. One works expediently at a slightly increased pressure such that one is filled with the acetic acid in the Pipes below the acetaldehyde introduces and the required oxygen at different levels of the Rohres admits. The oxidation can also be carried out exclusively in the presence of acetic acid, formed from the oxidation of acetaldehyde. The newly formed acetic acid during the oxidation the catalyst-containing solution is advantageously separated off by distillation. You can do this Perform distillation in combination with the production of vinyl acetate in an evaporator, through which the circulating gas, consisting predominantly of ethylene, of vinyl acetate production is passed through; This lowering of the partial pressure causes the evaporation of the acetic acid much easier. The catalyst remaining in the residue of the evaporation is introduced into return the reactor for the oxidation of acetaldehyde. One can do the oxidation of acetaldehyde Carry out with oxygen also in the gas phase in the presence of fixed catalysts, wherein the acetic acid is advantageously circulated in vapor form.
Hierbei wird das aus den Rohstoffen ÄthylenThe reaction products obtained after the aftertreatment can be worked up by distillation. This is made from the raw material ethylene

The same applies to the manufacture of vinyl acetate unconverted acetic acid and the acetic acid formed in the aftertreatment recovered and can be returned to the reaction with ethylene.
A reaction tube with an internal diameter of 25 mm and a length of 2 m contains 950 ml a fixed catalyst consisting of silica spheres 3 to 4 mm in diameter, each containing 1 liter 3.3 g palladium, 1.5 g gold and 30 g potassium acetate. Be through this reaction tube hourly at 164 ° C and 5 atmospheres 560 g of ethylene, 64 g of oxygen and 540 g of acetic acid, which in the course of the proceedings.
