The invention relates to a method for producing an electrophotographic recording material from an electrically conductive layer, a photoconductive layer and a protective layer.
It is known in electrophotography with a plate made of an electrically conductive layer, a photoconductive layer and a protective layer.
These known electrophotographic plates are heretofore made by having a photoconductive layer on an electrically conductive support or on an electrically conductive layer applies and then the photoconductive layer with a protective layer made of a suitable Plastic coated. However, the protective layer must not exceed a thickness of 2 μΐη, otherwise the resolution of the plate required for the production of good copies cannot be achieved can. The protective layer primarily has the task of generating the charge image protect photoconductive layer; therefore it should have excellent insulating properties as well offer sufficient mechanical protection.
The object of the invention is to provide protective layers of greater thickness which have the disadvantageous effect does not have in terms of resolving power.
The object of the invention is a process for producing an electrophotographic Recording material - optionally an electrically conductive layer - a photoconductive one Layer and a protective layer and is characterized in that a transparent, insulating film a photoconductive layer and an electrically conductive layer on the photoconductive layer Layer is applied.
elektrophotographischen AufzeichnungsmaterialsThe protective layer of a transparent, insulating film is preferably made of polytetrafluoroethylene. It can also consist of polyesters such as polyethylene terephthalate, polyamides, polyacrylonitrile or copolymers of the components mentioned. This film can be up to 12 μm thick, but preferably it has a thickness between 6 and 12 μm. A photoconductive layer is deposited on this film. This can be done by evaporation of selenium in a vacuum. However, it is also possible to apply a coating liquid to the film which contains a photoconductor and a solvent for the film and to evaporate the solvent so that a photoconductive layer is formed on the film. On the free surface of the photoconductive layer is then an electrically conductive layer or an elek method for producing one
electrophotographic recording material

This can be done by vapor deposition of a thin metal film such as Al happen in a vacuum. If the photoconductive layer is particularly sensitive to temperature, however, it is used as the material for the electrically conductive layer Copper iodide is preferred because it has sufficient electrical conductivity and very low Has evaporation point. However, a colloidal dispersion of graphite can also be sprayed on. It is also possible to dispense with the application of an electrically conductive layer. Then it is necessary that during the electrophotographic process the free surface of the photoconductive Layer is constantly brought into contact with an electrically conductive surface. From one Electrophotographic plate with a protective layer of polytetrafluoroethylene can be developed Toner images can be transferred to almost any surface. Because polytetrafluoroethylene is very resistant to elevated temperatures, the protective layer can above the melting point of the toner are heated and pressed against a sheet of paper, for example, the softened and liquefied toner completely to the

Paper is transferred. This transmission technology can also be used with the others mentioned as a protective layer suitable materials are used.
The method according to the invention ensures that the protective layer is 6 to 12 μm thick can be present without a disturbing loss of the solubility being noted. The reason this can be seen in the fact that when a coating liquid is applied from finely divided Photoconductors in a solvent align the individual photoconductor particles with respect to the film. Gravity supports the evaporation process of the solvent the settling of the photoconductor particles. Primarily, however, it is believed that primarily polar Forces between the photoconductor particles and the surface of the film are effective, through which the Photoconductor particles are drawn in the direction of the film. The relatively high and very uniform Concentration of the photoconductor along the surface causes its relatively high sensitivity as well as it increased resolving power, which therefore has an effect despite a relatively strong protective layer can come. The accumulation of photoconductors when applied to the protective layer according to the invention The photoconductive layer is now located at the boundary between the protective layer and the photoconductive layer, while it was previously at the boundary between the electrical and the electrically conductive support and the photoconductive Shift trained. The electrostatic that take effect when the charge pattern is created Forces therefore not only had to pass through the isolating protective layer, but also still act through part of the photoconductive layer.
Furthermore, by separately producing a stronger protective layer, irregularities in the Avoided protective layers that adhere to known electrophotographic plates. This avoids that electric fields develop in the layers, the deposition of toner in the substrate favor the image and thus increase the veil of the image.
The electrophotographic plates made according to the invention are easy to clean and therefore often reusable. They are flexible so that they can meet the requirements of most areas of application, in particular, machine electrophotographic copying processes are also sufficient. The thicker one insulating protective layer allows the transfer of the toner images to an electrically conductive image-receiving material with the help of an electric field, without causing an electric breakdown the photoconductive layer would have to fear.
In the known methods, it is customary to use an insulating protective layer in the form of a suitable one To apply synthetic resin in a suitable solvent on the photoconductive layer. Here is it is necessary to choose such a solvent that does not affect the photoconductive layer and shows no poisoning effects. However, this is when a selenium layer is used as the photoconductive one Shift very difficult. In addition, however, it is also difficult in cases where the photoconductor present embedded in a binder, make the appropriate choice of solvent. Most The binders that can be used are in general also in the solvents for the Protective layer soluble.
However, these difficulties do not apply to the production of an electrophotographic according to the invention Plate as the solvent of the coating liquid for the photoconductive Layer can dissolve the protective layer.
A 6 μm thick film made of polyethylene terephthalate is attached to a roller and placed in a recipient. After evacuation of the recipient a selenium layer of 20 μm thickness is applied to the film vaporized. One to 5 μΐη is then applied to this photoconductive layer, likewise in a vacuum evaporated thick layer of Al, which serves as an electrically conductive layer. The electrophotographic one thus prepared Plate is then loaded using known charging and exposure equipment checked. The charge image formed on the selenium layer is developed with the aid of a made visible from toner and carrier existing powder developer.
Wipe the toner image with a linen cloth, cotton or paper tissue Wiping away by hand so one can take a series of images one after the other on the same electrophotographic Make a plate. It is also possible to use the toner image on an image receiving material Transferring metal, paper or plastic.
On a 6 μm thick film made of polyethylene terephthalate becomes a photoconductive layer consisting of 2.5 parts by weight of zinc oxide per part by weight a silicone resin dispersed in toluene. The photoconductive layer has a Layer thickness of 35 μΐη. Your free surface is then sprayed with graphite. The electrophotographic plate thus prepared became similar Tried and cleaned the manner indicated in Example 1. The plate was easy to clean and showed great scratch resistance.
