Description
Warin-resistant iron-nickel alloy The present invention relates to warin-resistant, cuttable alloys which can be used at high temperatures, in particular to inexpensive "superalloys" based on iron, which have improved heat resistance at elevated temperatures of up to about 760.degree .
Normally, the superalloys contain either iron, nickel or cobalt alone or in alloy as a base. The nickel-based superalloys are generally considered to be particularly useful at temperatures between 649 and 871 to 927'C, and the iron-based superalloys find their greatest application at the lower limit of this temperature range and even below, for example between 593 and 649'C. Characteristic nickel-based alloys for use at elevated temperatures are e.g. B. "M-252" with contents of about 5501,) nickel, 190 /, chromium, 10 "/, cobalts 100/0 molybdenum and about 20/0 iron, 10/0 aluminum and 2.50 /, titanium, as well »Waspaloy« with contents of about 560/0 nickel, 191) /, chromium, 141) /, cobalt »4.3 l) /, molybdenum, 3 0 /, titanium, 1.3 0 /, aluminum and 10 /, Iron. Common iron-based superalloys are alloys such as "V-57" with contents of around 25.5% , nickel, 14.75%, chromium, 1.25% , molybdenum, 3%, Titanium, 0.25 0 / "aluminum, remainder iron, the alloy» A-286 «with contents of about 260 /, nickel, 1501,) chromium, 21) /, titanium, 0.250 /,) aluminum, remainder iron, as well the nickel-chromium-iron alloy »901« with contents of around 400 /, nickel, 130 /, chromium, 60 /, molybdenum, 2.50 / 0 titanium, 0.250 / 0 aluminum, the remainder being iron.
A decisive disadvantage of the nickel and cobalt-based superalloys lies in the high manufacturing costs as well as their high density and difficult processability.
Although iron-based superalloys are generally cheaper than the alloys are based on nickel and cobalt, they cannot operate at higher temperatures, z. B. at temperatures above about 649'C because of the occurring at these temperatures rapid decrease in heat resistance can be used. Those alloys iron-based, which contains substantial amounts of elements such as B. tungsten, chrome, Molybdenum, etc., tend to form a multi-phase structure or a extensive separation of the components with the resulting tendency to Brittle and crack or break either during processing or during high stress on a part made from it. Additionally are the iron-based superalloys of the traditional type among the commonly occurring ones Uses at elevated temperatures are generally more susceptible to corrosion than the nickel-based superalloys. Despite these disadvantages, however, have the iron-based alloys have the distinct advantage of lower manufacturing costs and the lower density compared to the nickel and cobalt based superalloys.
etwa 759'C folgender Zusammensetzung (in Gewichtsprozenten):
The invention also encompasses the use of these iron-nickel superalloys for gas turbine wheels and turbine blades.
The invention is illustrated by the following description and drawings explained in more detail.

erläutert;
nachfolgenden Tabelle angegeben.
F i g. 1 bis 3 erläutern den verschiedenen Einfluß von Aluminium und Titan auf die Härte der Legierungen entsprechend den Zusammensetzungen 1 bis 12 der Tabelle bei verschiedenen Alterungszeiten.F i g. 1 to 3 explain the different effects of aluminum and titanium on the hardness of the alloys corresponding to compositions 1 to 12 of the table with different aging times.
Aluminum itself leads to the harmful sigma phase and, in very high proportions, tends to make the alloys quite brittle and difficult to forge. From the F i g. 1 to 3 it can be seen that the addition of a minimal amount of titanium makes the use of smaller amounts of aluminum possible, while the hardness properties of the alloys are not only retained but even improved. Therefore about 20% titanium is required as a minimum amount in the new steels.
However, titanium has a significant influence on the tensile strength of the alloys examined at elevated temperatures. This effect of titanium is shown in FIGS. 4 and 5 recorded graphically ... from which it can be seen that both the tensile strength and the yield point, determined at a test temperature of 760'C, increase rapidly when titanium is in an amount of more than about 2 to 2.3 0 /, is used in alloys containing 1.41 to 1.66 l) /, aluminum, about 35 to 370 /, nickel, about 130 /, chromium, about 501, molybdenum, 0.91 to 0.950 /, niobium and about 0.010 / 0 contains boron. However, if titanium is used in excessively large amounts, it also acts to greatly reduce the hot workability and increase the cost of these steels. For this reason, the upper limit of the titanium content is set at around 3% . In order to achieve the full benefit of titanium for a balanced composition in these new steels, de. Titanium content is preferably limited to about 2.3 to 2.7 %.
Aluminum is also extremely critical in these steels with a view to their breakage. load and tensile strength both at room temperature as well as at elevated temperatures.
So goes from Fig. 6 shows that an aluminum. content between about 1 and about 3.5 0 /, leads to an extraordinary and unexpected increase in the breaking load duration at 760.degree. C. and a load of 38.7 kh / nm 2 and that furthermore a maximum short-term breaking load duration due to an aluminum content between about 1.5 and about 3 0 / ,! in particular between about 1.75 and 2.5 OA, is achieved.
From Fig. 7 it can be seen that the long-term (exposure time at elevated temperatures, for example 760 ° C., with higher aluminum contents of, for example, more than about 1.7 to 20%) drops noticeably.
Therefore, although an aluminum content between about 1.5 and 3% results in a short term improvement, from the standpoint of improved breaking load duration, a lower aluminum content, e.g. B. less than about 1.750 /, required to achieve the optimal long-term service life at the breaking load, a consideration of essential importance with regard to the intended areas of application for the new alloys.
Aluminum is also important in the new alloys in terms of improving tensile strength properties. From Fig. 8 (graph B) it can be seen that the increasing aluminum content within a range from about 1.25 to about 2.5 % leads to a pronounced increase in tensile strength. In addition, graph A of FIG. 8 that at 760'C the highest values for the yield strength in the new alloys are measured when aluminum is limited to a content of about 1.5 to 2.5 %, the corresponding maximum value at an aluminum content of about 1.75 to 2.25 "/, is achieved.
Thus, in its broadest scope, the invention relates to an aluminum content of about 1 to 3.5 "/,. The upper limits of this wide range are of value in obtaining improved corrosion resistance in the new steels. However, within this wide range a more limited one becomes Aluminum content, namely corresponding to the lower limit values, for example between about 1.20 / and about 2.5 0 /, should be considered in order to achieve balanced mechanical properties about 1.75 or 2.00 /, is suggested for making alloys with optimal long term fracture toughness along with excellent tensile properties combined with good workability, a substantially uniform microstructure, and adequate corrosion resistance.
In limited quantities, niobium is also a preferred element of the new steels in order to achieve maximum breaking load properties, maximum tensile strengths and to improve corrosion resistance. Tantalum can largely be used in place of niobium, although niobium is preferred because of its lower cost and lower density. From Fig. 9 it is seen that at 760'C the maximum breaking load time of the inventive alloys is obtained with a niobium content of about 0.4 to about 1.501 "and that the time of exposure to niobium contents of greater than about 10 /, rapidly decreases and very low values at niobium contents Although a small increase in the breaking load duration is achieved when 3 '/' tantalum is added, the ductility of the alloy is greatly reduced.Figures 10 and 11 show that maximum values for the yield strength both at room temperature and at 760 ° C. with a niobium content of about 0.40 to 0.75 %, and that the tensile strength values increase by adding niobium in amounts of up to about 1.25 or 1.5001.
Furthermore, niobium is in approximately the same critical amount as it is necessary to achieve the best mechanical properties, also effective for improving the corrosion resistance of the new steels at elevated temperatures, as in FIG. 12 shown.
Niobium can therefore be contained in the new steels in a wide range up to about 1.5% and in a more limited, more preferred range of about 0.40 to 1.25% .
Nickel is also a crucial element in the inventions Alloys.
The graphic representation A of FIG. Fig. 13 shows the influence of nickel on the short-term life of 38.7 kg / mm2, and graph B of the same figure shows the effect of this element on the long-term life of 28 kg / mm2. From these graphs it can be seen that in order to achieve an improved life at break stress a minimum amount of nickel of about 340/0, preferably about 360 / "is required and that, more importantly, an upper limit of the allowable nickel content of about 39 to 400 /, and preferably about 380 / () must be adhered to in order to achieve the highest service life with a long-term breaking load. The limits for the nickel contents with regard to optimally balanced breaking loads and low costs are therefore between about 36 and 38 "/,.
The addition of about 7 ') / 0 cobalt has only a very small effect on the breaking load properties of the alloys according to the invention. Thus, while cobalt is not an essential element of the new steels, it can be added in amounts up to 7 liters, but is not preferred because of its additional cost.
Molybdenum is also an essential element in certain limited amounts in the alloys according to the invention. The graphs A and B of FIGS. 14 illustrate the influence of different molybdenum contents on the yield strength and the tensile strength of the test alloys at 760'C and show that a molybdenum content of about 4.5 to 5 0 /, increases the tensile strength at elevated temperature rapidly within the examined remaining area. As in a similar manner from FIG. As can be seen from FIG. 15, the breaking load duration at 760 ° C. shows a strong increase at approximately 4.5 to 5.0% molybdenum. Molybdenum is therefore required in the steels according to the invention with a minimum content of about 4.5 %. The new steels should have a maximum content of about 6.5 % molybdenum, preferably about 5.5 % molybdenum, since a higher molybdenum content leads to significantly increased costs for the steels and a more difficult processability. In addition, a comparison of the F i 15 with graph A of FIG. 13 that the use of larger amounts of molybdenum achieves the highest breaking times and can even be exceeded in a more economical manner if nickel is used within the upper limit of the range specified for this element.
Tungsten can partially replace the molybdenum in the steels according to the invention, but it is preferred that at least 2 or 3 % molybdenum be included in the alloy composition, and taking these limits into account, the total content of tungsten plus molybdenum is about 4.5 to 6, 5 held.
The hardness properties of the new alloys are further improved by the addition of certain amounts of boron, and this element can therefore be added in amounts up to 0.015 or 0.020 /, and is preferably added in an amount of about 0.0030 /, up to the above maximum amount added.
A) and the 0.20 /, - yield strength (graph B) of the alloys according to the invention. From Fig. 16 it can be seen that the new alloys have extremely useful tensile strength values at relatively high temperatures of 760 ° C. From the graphic representation B of FIG. 16 it can also be seen that the 0.20 / "limit of the new alloys is significantly increased at a temperature in the vicinity of 649 ° C. For example, the 0.20 / .r limit at 649 ° C. is about 0.1 kg / mm? higher than at room temperature. This phenomenon indicates the occurrence of aging during the heating of the test piece to the test temperature. However, this increase in the yield strength does not cause the new alloys to become fragile after prolonged exposure to a temperature of 649 ° C. Further tests in which the tensile strength samples were exposed to a temperature of - 649 ° C for relatively long periods of time showed, although an increase in the yield point and the tensile strength and a slight decrease in the percentage elongation and percentage reduction in the test alloys were observed after 300 hours were kept at 649'C and under a load of 14 kg / MM2 that this phenomenon is not of such importance to the value of new alloys for the intended purposes of influencing nd disadvantageous.
The contribution made by the new alloys to the state of the art is shown in FIG. 17 , which relates to a 100 hour fracture load at various temperatures for a characteristic alloy according to the invention, i. H. Experimental Alloy No. 27, as well as a number of conventional iron-based alloys, iron-nickel alloys, and nickel-based alloys. From Fig. 17 it can be seen that prior to the present invention there was a large gap between iron-based superalloys such as iron-based superalloys. B. "A-286" and "V-57", and the alloys based on iron-nickel, such as. B. "901", on the one hand and the heat-resistant nickel-based alloys, such as. B. "M-252",! On the other hand, existed. From Fig. 17 it can be seen that the new alloys according to the invention serve to close the previously large gap between these two classes of substances. The new alloys are superior to conventional iron-based and iron-nickel-based alloys when measured against a service life of 100 hours at break and even come quite close to the performance of the currently available nickel-based alloys, such as e.g. B. "M-252".
The yield strength of representative alloy No. 27 of the present invention is shown in FIG. 18 , together with the same property values of the conventional iron and nickel-based superalloys Y) M-252 "," Waspaloy "and " V-57 ". From Fig. 18 it can be seen that the yield strength of the new alloys at all temperatures above about 565 ° C. up to a temperature of 760 ° C. is significantly greater than that of the conventional superalloys investigated, both iron and nickel-based. The tensile strengths, like the breaking loads, are important for the manufacture of gas turbine wheels and the new alloys are therefore particularly useful in such areas of application.
As already mentioned, there is a further significant advantage of the invention improved, high-temperature-resistant alloys in that they are relatively can be easily processed. The alloys of the invention are essentially Can be cold rolled just as well as stainless steel of material no. 4301
Another advantage of the alloys according to the invention over conventional ones Iron-based superalloys are good weldability. This attribute is of great importance, for example when using plates, sheets and tapes for making parts for nozzle assemblies where weldability is a crucial factor.
