Description
Process for the production of carbon black The invention is a Process for the production of carbon black according to the furnace process, which is characterized is that you have a tin-containing substance in a precisely dosed amount between 250 and 250,000, preferably between 800 and 150,000 parts by weight of tin per liter Introduces million parts by weight of the hydrocarbons used into the reaction zone.
This method enables the production of Carbon blacks of uniform, predetermined quality in increased yields as well as one Compensation of the fluctuations in the hydrocarbons used as starting material, so that great deviations in quality of the soot produced are avoided. The procedure also enables the production of a carbon black that is consistent and within very narrow limits has the desired and predetermined properties.
By adding less than 250 parts by weight of the additive (calculated as tin) per million parts of starting fuel may be causes slight changes in the soot that is formed, which is important for quality control are important, however, it has been found that these amounts are obviously not larger Cause changes in the carbon black properties. Above concentrations of However, 500 parts tin per million starting fuel is the increased influence on the properties of the carbon black formed a function of the amount of used Additive. It was also found that the amount of the additional element (tin), that remains in bond with the finished carbon black, for a given process and at a given additional method largely depends on the concentration of the Additive, but usually only a small fraction of the total added amount. The method according to the invention can thus be more effective Wise used to produce carbon blacks that contain varying amounts of tin. The upper limit of the amount of the particular additive used according to the invention depends on the properties desired, e.g. B. the structural properties and / or the tin content of the end product. From the practical and economic point of view, d. H. to avoid expensive special facilities or a change in the normal flame shape or a change in the formation of the combustion zones etc., it would be impractical to use more than about 300,000 parts by weight of tin per million To feed parts by weight of starting fuel. Although used according to the invention Quantity of the additive in special cases up to 250,000 parts of tin or even more be, however, according to the preferred embodiment of the invention, about 800 to about 150,000 parts of tin per million parts of starting fuel are used.
The carbon blacks obtained according to the invention have many unusual ones and desired properties. For example, significant changes in the Particle size and arrangement, e.g. B. the so-called structural properties of the generated Soot. The extent of these changes depends on each type of procedure the properties of a produced soot, recognizable from the measurements of the oil absorption and the nigrometer index, the tin compound used in each case and its Concentration. The index of a soot, determined by nigrometer measurement, is a Guide to the color depth, the color intensity having an inverse function the nigrometer display is. The measurement of the nigrometer index of a soot is also a rapid method of determining the relative particle size of a carbon black that generally varies immediately with the index. The oil absorption of a soot is a measure of its oil requirement and thus a relative measure of its "structure". she is a good general guide to the relative viscosity of many printing inks and paint systems that use carbon black and that have lower oil absorption generally means a lower relative viscosity. at In addition, for some carbon black-filled rubbers, the oil absorption of the carbon black is common Reference point for the level of modulus that the carbon black has in a given rubber gives a given degree of filling. The invention thus makes it possible either from a large number of different fuels a soot of a certain type of constant and uniform quality or from a specific fuel useful carbon blacks with desired, predetermined properties for use in printing inks, paints, plastics and rubber, etc. in greater variety than is normally possible without major changes of the characteristics of the production process.
In addition to the controlled production of carbon blacks with the above, The method according to the invention is suitable for predetermined properties also for the production of carbon blacks, which contain different amounts of tin in an intimate bond contain. By introducing the additive into the reaction or conversion zone, in which the soot is present as an active radical when it is formed, d. H. through the Presence of the additive while the soot is in the "status nascendi", the additive has the option of intimately mixing with the finished soot or connect to. These carbon blacks can be mixed with a wide variety of compounds, such as hydroxides, Ammonia, amines, cyanides, various organic compounds, etc., implemented are, whereby soot derivatives are formed by rearrangement. The carbon black derivatives obtained find numerous application possibilities on the rubber, plastic, lacquer, Printing inks, paints, pigments, etc. Using the invention it is thus possible to produce carbon blacks that are not inert, but with others Compounds are able to enter into reactions, with the most varied of carbon black derivatives with desired properties.
In general, tin and all tin compounds are suitable as Additives for the purposes of the invention. However, such tin compounds are preferred those in a carrier such as water, aqueous media, or organic media including the hydrocarbons from which the soot is made or in the vapors or gases usually supplied to the carbon conversion zone, soluble are or can be dispersed or suspended. Very particularly preferred water-soluble tin compounds. These include, for example, the various inorganic tin salts, e.g. B. the chlorides, sulfates, carbonates, etc. Other tin compounds, which are particularly suitable for the purposes of the invention are the various Complex and organometallic compounds or the salts of organic acids. The amount of additive compound used alone or in admixture with the starting fuel or is introduced with the oxidizing agents, can easily be carried out by any known measuring and control devices regulate.
The properties of the carbon blacks given in the following examples were Determined as follows, unless otherwise stated: Nigrometer index: The nigrometer index a soot is made with the instrument described in U.S. Patent 1780,231 certainly. The instrument is used to measure the intensity of blackness or the Color depth of a paste obtained by mixing 0.25 g of the carbon black to be tested in 3 cm3 of linseed oil varnish of the quality Morrill No. 5201 is produced.
Oil absorption: the oil absorption method is practically the same, as it is used for this purpose everywhere in the carbon black and rubber industry. It consists in mixing 1 g of carbon black with alkali-refined linseed oil until a point is reached at which the mixture sticks together as a rounded mass. This method is commonly known as the Gardner Method. The results will be given in kilograms of oil required to wet 100 kg of soot.
Diphenylguanidine absorption test (DPG test): In the DPG test, 1 g of the soot to be examined for 30 minutes with 100 cm3 of 0.001 n-diphenylguanidine in Benzene shaken. The soot is then allowed to settle and an aliquot is titrated Using part of the above solution with 0.002N alcoholic hydrochloric acid of bromophenol blue as an indicator. At the same time, a zero test is carried out. The results are given as the percentage of diphenylguanidine that was released from the solution Will get removed.
The essence of the invention lies in the introduction of certain and different Quantities of a tin-containing additive in the carbon conversion zones. Quite Obviously, therefore, there are many variations in the method of operation and the apparatus possible without departing from the scope of the invention. For example, the most diverse Changes made to the combustion zone and the way in which the additive was fed will. Furthermore, considerably smaller amounts of the additive can be used within the scope of the invention be used. Smaller amounts, e.g. B. about 500 parts (calculated as tin) per A million parts of base fuel, or less, can be used when using With the help of the invention, there are few uncontrollable fluctuations in the many carbon black production processes are peculiar, should be balanced.
