Use of an alloy based on silver and / or copper as the material
for electrical contacts with automatic switches, especially with miniature circuit breakers,
which are made from the previously known contact materials, occurs in the event of short-circuit shutdowns
or if the open contacts are closed in the event of a short circuit, often welding
of contacts. This can cause the switches to malfunction.
The invention relates to the use of an alloy of at least
three metal components that have unlimited miscibility in the liquid state
have, and two of which are made up of the elements lead, bismuth, tin or gallium
exist and are rated at 2 to 30%, and in which the metal components that
are infinitely miscible with these elements in the liquid state, from the metals
Silver and / or copper exist as a material for electrical contacts, in particular
for circuit breakers. A silver-copper-lead alloy is particularly advantageous
with a content of 2 to 30% lead, the remainder silver and copper.
There are already contact materials consisting of at least three metal components,
which are infinitely miscible in the liquid state, known such. B. Contact alloys
from copper, silver and bismuth with a content of 5 to 60% bismuth or from 10
up to 50% silver, 1.5 to 5% tin and 45 to 88% copper. Also contact pieces for
Circuit breakers made from 1 to 10% lead, 12 to 27% cadmium, and the remainder silver
possibly made of copper are known. Such contact materials tend to
Surface oxidation, which leads to an increase in the contact resistance.
In contrast, when using alloys in the inventive
Compositions the contact materials metallic even after many short circuits
blank. Surprisingly, there are no surface oxidations worth mentioning
on. This resistance to oxidation is based on the relatively high vapor pressures
of the low-melting metals, which have the consequence that when they occur
The metal vapor forming the liquid phase protects the contact surface from oxidation.
The contact surfaces therefore retain a metallic sheen after heavy loads
Appearance. The prevention of the formation of surface oxide layers is therefore
especially important because this increases the contact resistance undesirably
be avoided in the contact area.
A particular advantage that comes with the use of alloys in the
composition according to the invention occurs when used according to the invention,
lies in the fact that the current load on the contact material
resulting liquid phase down to relatively low temperatures in the constriction area
the contacts is maintained, so that during a relatively long time
Contacts with a small opening force can be separated again. This effect
is already achieved if a composite according to the invention is only used for one of the contacts
Alloy is used and the mating contact is made of a different contact material,
z. B. made of copper. Accordingly, in the case of contacts with double interruption, it is sufficient
if either for the movable bridge or for both fixed contacts alloys
the composition of the invention can be used.
The metal components lead, bismuth, tin or gallium can be used in the
higher melting component be incorporated; but it can also do the reverse
Case. In. in both cases it is an intercalation composite metal.
The alloy to be used according to the invention can, however, also be used as a penetrating composite metal
present, in which the components each form coherent frameworks that
are spatially nested.

take place on the melting route or on the sintering route. The latter procedure is
therefore particularly advantageous because it enables the production of finished molded parts.
