Description
Process for the chemical nickel-plating of non-metallic objects In the German patents 1077 940 and 1 145 889 a process for the chemical nickel-plating of objects with a "catalytic" surface is described. This process essentially consists in treating the objects in a bath containing nickel and hypophosphite ions. In this context, the word "catalytic" means that the material of which at least the surface of the object is made has the property of promoting the oxidation reduction reaction between the nickel ions and the hypophosphite ions, which cause the nickel to be deposited on the catalytic surface catalyze.
In the first of the patents mentioned, certain physico-chemical Mentioned conditions, which the bath must meet, so that a correct deposition is guaranteed.
After that, the bath must contain certain quantities of the reactants in particular have, d. H.
das Mengenverhältnis von Ni++ : H2P02- muß zwischen 0,25 und 1,60 liegen; die absolute H2P02--Konzentration muß 0,15 bis 1,20 Mol/Liter betragen; der pH-Wert muß zwischen 4,3 und 6,8 gehalten werden durch die Anwesenheit eines Puffers und durch während des Reaktionsverlaufs erfolgende Alkalizugabe.the ratio of Ni ++: H2P02- must be between 0.25 and 1.60 lie; the absolute H2P02 concentration must be 0.15 to 1.20 mol / liter; the pH must be kept between 4.3 and 6.8 by the presence of a Buffer and by adding alkali during the course of the reaction.
Also, in order to be effective, the bath needs to last for long periods of time to remain usable, contain so-called activating agents, which are made from saturated, aliphatic dicarboxylic acids with 3 to 6 carbon atoms, such as succinic acid.
Finally, the reaction must take place at a temperature between 95 and 99 ° C.
In the second of the cited patents is the continuous How this procedure is used is shown.
The aim of the present invention is a method that the application the above procedure for non-catalytic surfaces, in particular for plastics.
It is already known, a metallic deposit on the non-metallic To apply the surface of an object that one activates the object the surface is treated with a palladium salt solution and then activated in this way The object is immersed in the plating bath.
However, it was found that using this method in the Nickel plating the palladium salt adhering to the surface quickly into the nickel plating bath diffuses and the rapid decomposition of the bath, as well as the formation of a black Precipitation of colloidal nickel causes, which causes further nickel plating becomes impossible. This disadvantage is not eliminated by the fact that the Surface of the non-metallic object first with a reducing agent, such as tin chloride, treated, then rinsed and then the item with metal salt treated. The metal salt solution is dragged into the nickel-plating solution and promotes their decomposition.
The method according to the invention allows this disadvantage to be avoided and ensures the attachment of metallic palladium cores to the non-metallic Surface on which the nickel-plating reaction is initiated, following this Initiation as with an ordinary catalytic surface continues.
The method according to the invention is therefore a method for chemical Nickel plating of a non-metallic object by means of a nickel and hypophosphite ion containing bath with the usual composition and prior activation of the to surfaces to be treated by immersing the object in a palladium salt solution, which is characterized in that the object prior to chemical nickel plating cleaned, roughened, then in an aqueous palladium salt solution and then in a a Solution containing reducing agent is immersed. Only then does the object become Nickel-plated according to the process of the earlier patents mentioned. The following details of the procedure should also be mentioned: The term "non-metallic substances" denotes not only plastics, but also rubber, glass, wood, ceramic materials, quartz and the like
The non-metallic surface can be roughened after cleaning and pickling in the usual way by rubbing with sand, brushing, rubbing, sanding etc. to remove all polished surfaces.
The palladium chloride solution preferably has a concentration of .35 mg per liter.
The reduction of the palladium salt to metallic palladium in the form of nuclei can be carried out with any suitable reducing agent. The use of hypophosphite itself as a reducing agent, e.g. B. in a to 0.225 molar solution has proven to be advantageous. However, hydroquinone, hydrazine, etc. can also be used. It should be noted that after the reduction the surface does not have a continuous coating of palladium nuclei, but only has a certain number of nuclei which are sufficient to initiate the catalytic nickel plating; once the reaction is initiated, the nickel spreads around the cores and eventually covers the entire surface of the object. The start of nickel plating is expediently carried out under conditions that differ somewhat from those of the usual chemical nickel plating. In fact, as long as the surface is not evenly nickel-plated, it does not quite play the role of the catalyst, in contrast to what happens with a "catalytic" surface. It is therefore advisable to start the process, ie to replace the metals Pd and Ni and then to form a continuous nickel coating, under different conditions. It has been found that, in the initiation stage, the use of a bath in which the ratio of Ni ++: HZPO _, -, is near the lower limit of the features specified in patent 1 077 940 zone ie in the vicinity of 0.25, is advantageous. It has been found that in this case the start of nickel plating actually takes place within a shorter time. In practice, this initiation can take place after less than 10 minutes. It is also possible to work at temperatures below those of a normal nickel bath in order to avoid the formation of defects in the nickel coating. In any case, the initiation of the nickel plating must be carried out with baths that are as resistant as possible.
After initiation, the reaction then takes place in the usual manner.
