Polyester molding compounds are thermosetting mixtures of unsaturated polyesters with polymerizable ones ethylenically unsaturated monomers and catalysts. Such masses are known (see e.g. U.S. Patent 2,553,133 to Ellis, issued September 9 1941 and Canadian Patent 544,590 to Wells dated Aug. 6, 1957) and they get plenty used for layering, compression molding or casting.
These masses, which are initially liquid or dough-like, can be converted into solids, insoluble and infusible Moldings are converted. This transformation is called hardening and is essentially a polymerisation of the unsaturated polyester onto the added monomer.
So beschreibt z. The polymerization catalyst often used in these masses is an organic peroxide, like benzoyl peroxide. Various "accelerators" are sometimes used along with the catalyst used 'to shorten the time required for curing. So describes z. B. the Canadian patent 467 389 by Hurdis of August 15, 1950 the use of N-methylaniline or similar secondary N-monoalkyl-monoaryl-monoamines with mononuclear aryl as an accelerator for those with benzoyl peroxide catalyzed mixture of unsaturated polyester and polymerizable monomers.
Unfortunately, however, this accelerator is not effective when the catalyst is a ketone peroxide. In the U.S. Patent 2,610,965 dated September 16, 1952, therefore suggests Vandenberg use it certain basic nitrogen compounds together with », Ä-Dialkylarylmethylhydroperoxden, such as Cumyl hydroperoxide, and an organically soluble heavy metal compound such as cobalt compound for the acceleration of the polymerization of vinylidene compounds. However, it is still desired to create more effective acceleration systems for polyester molding compounds.
Das erfindungsgemäße Verfahren ist dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß man Massen aushärtet, die das KatalysatorbeschleunigersystemA method has now been found for producing molded parts by curing at room temperature Molding compounds, the ethylenically unsaturated polymerizable monomers and a catalyst accelerator system contain. kanadischen Patentschrift 599 521 vom 7. Canadian Patent 599,521 dated June 7, 1960 by Root. These with abietic acid produced polyester resin compositions offer particular difficulties when necessary and desired is to carry out curing at normal temperature (e.g. 15 to 35 ° C). It should be expressly noted that in the class of secondary amines described above, the is used according to the invention, the carbon atom of the alkyl substituent is a primary carbon atom must be for the substance to be useful. A portion of the molding compound obtained in this way is placed in a test tube measuring 7.5 × 1.0 cm up to a height of 5 cm poured in, and a thermocouple is placed in the center of the mass near the bottom of the test tube appropriate. The test tube is then placed in an air bath that is thermostated at a temperature is maintained at 29.4 ° C (85 ° F). The gelation time of the mass is observed. The responsiveness of the molding compound is determined by the degree of reaction, which is determined by the maximum temperature is measured, which is achieved during the polymerization. The observations are in the Table I below compiled, in which the "gel time" is the time required for the Molding compound is given a jelly-like consistency; the "exothermic time" is the time required to reach the highest temperature during curing, and the "exothermic maximum" is that highest temperature reached during curing.

The above values prove the fact that a polyester molding composition which the accelerator catalyst system according to the invention contains, in a remarkably short time at substantially ambient temperature can gel. The hardening sets in very quickly, as is the case with the relative "Exothermic maximum" temperature is shown.
It is important to note that with N-isopropylaniline the desired results have not been obtained; d. that is, the corresponding mass has a long one Gel time and takes a relatively long time to reach maximum temperature, which is a very long time indicates slow curing. The developed, relatively low temperature (103.5 ° C) is also a Signs of insufficiently rapid curing. This proves the need for that in the alkyl substituent is a primary carbon atom in the ^ position. In a similar series of experiments, in which various N, N-dialkyl substituted anilines were used, were the corresponding Gel times are also extended. It took a longer time to get to the maximum temperature and the maximum temperature reached was lower than that in the above Table given corresponding monosubstituted anilines. These results prove it it is crucial that the special secondary N-monoalkyl-monoaryl-monoamine with mononuclear Aryl in which the carbon atom of the alkyl group a primary carbon atom as prescribed in the present invention can be used. These Results are particularly surprising in view of the fact that these amines do not contain cobalt Do not accelerate curing of polyesters with methyl ethyl ketone peroxide to a practical extent.
If Example 1 is repeated without the presence of an inhibitor, essentially the get the same results.
A polyester is made from 116 parts of fumaric acid, 134 parts of dipropylene glycol and 121 parts Wood resin. Sufficient quinone is added to the product to achieve a concentration of 100 ppm to achieve in the finished mix. It is then diluted with a styrene mixture, which is 40% of the contains monomeric styrene. Die folgende Tabelle zeigt die Ergebnisse.b) 15 g of the molding composition thus obtained was poured into a polyethylene container with a flat bottom and 8.9 cm (3 1 J 2 ") in diameter. 30 g were poured into a second polyethylene container. The gel time at room temperature (approximately 26.7 ° C [80 ° F]) was noted and the hardness of the hardening resin was measured from time to time with a Barcol hardness tester The tester used on thinner castings was the one labeled 935 and was designed to record much lower hardnesses than the tester used on thicker specimens, ie that known as 934-1. When the gel time exceeded 15 minutes, the castings were removed from the polyethylene containers and the hardening state was followed by periodically measuring the hardness of the castings Table shows the results.

ähnlich eine unzulässige lange Zeit von 1 Stunde 15 Minuten, um zu gelieren, und nach dem Ablauf von 3 Stunden war die Härte des Gießstückes so gering, daß keine Messungen erhalten werden konnten.similarly, an inadmissible long time of 1 hour 15 minutes to gel and after the expiration after 3 hours the hardness of the casting was so low that no measurements could be obtained.
In the above example, instead of the specified peroxide, an aldehyde peroxide, such as heptaldehyde peroxide, can be used with the same results.
Die folgenden Ergebnisse wurden erhalten:A resin is made similar to that in the previous example, except that in place of 121 parts of wood resin in the polyester batch, 151 parts of wood resin were used. The acceleration of the resin was achieved in a similar manner to Example 2; H. to 500 g portions of the resin 2.5 g of commercial cobalt octoate (12% cobalt) and 0.014 mol of various substituted anilines, as shown in the table below. The resins were made with 0.5% Lupersol DDM and the castings were made as described in Example 2. The following results were received:

In contrast to the previous results, an otherwise identical mixture resulted in the N-isopropylaniline contained as amine, no measurable hardness, even after 2 hours with 300 g castings. (As explained earlier, N-isopropylaniline is an amine, which is outside the invention in that it does not have a primary carbon atom and is in accordance with the invention not usable).
Also Ν, Ν-dimethylaniline revealed when it was in place of the above amines was used in the same composition as possible, not a satisfactory one Results, and in fact it produced no measurable hardness, even after 2 hours on 30 g castings. This proves how critical it is to use a secondary amine of the type claimed and not a tertiary amine, such as Ν, Ν-dimethylaniline.
The effect of the cobalt in the above examples is particularly noteworthy in view of the fact that curing actually slows down when cobalt is added to a benzoyl peroxide catalyzed polyester blend is added, which od with N-methylaniline. Ä. Is accelerated. It is therefore perfect unexpected that cobalt would harden in the presence of N-methylaniline or the like in the presence of the ketone peroxide catalyst as shown. These results are all the more remarkable and more unexpected in view of the fact that secondary amines of the kind N-methylaniline are than Accelerators of ketone peroxide catalyzed polyester hardening are ineffective. When other Peroxide catalysts, such as hydroperoxide of the type as it is by «-Cumylhydroperoxyd and tert. Butyl hydroperoxide are used in place of the ketone peroxide of the present invention unsatisfactory results are also obtained, even if cobalt and that according to the invention secondary amines used are present. So it is evident that the invention is a remarkable synergetic improvement achieved from the known effectiveness of the catalyst and this accelerator in various other combinations is not expected or predicted could be.
