It is known that by using multi-level keying without increasing the keying speed the transmission capacity of a communication channel can be increased.

Nachrichtenkanälen, insbesondere durch ternäre PhasenmodulationFor the transmission of binary coded message characters, e.g. B. Telegraphiezeichen, among other things, the phase jump modulation of a carrier frequency is known. In the simplest case, the two states of the binary signal are characterized by the phase positions of the carrier oscillation which differ by 180 °, and each time there is a change from one state to the other, there is a 180 ° phase jump. For demodulation on the receiving side, a comparison carrier oscillation is required, which can be obtained from the carrier-frequency signal using known methods. This type of phase modulation has the disadvantage of ambiguity, that is to say, in the signal demodulated at the receiving end, the two states can be interchanged without this generally being immediately noticeable. The disadvantage is avoided by the phase differential modulation, which is also known. In this case, the information is not characterized by the phase position of the carrier-frequency oscillation, but rather by the change in the phase position. In the application of telegraphy, where the two binary states z. If, for example, they are referred to as the separation state and the character state, each “phase jump” means, for example, a character step, and “no phase jump” indicates the separation state. The demodulation on the receiving side can also be carried out with the aid of a comparison carrier oscillation or by the fact that the carrier-frequency received signal is used for the method and circuit arrangement

In order to save transmission frequency band or to increase the transmission capacity of a channel without increasing the scanning speed, message signals can also be transmitted in quaternary coding. Since the signal to be transmitted is generally in binary form and must also be output again in the same form, recoding is required on the sending and receiving sides. It is advisable to combine two successive binary steps to form a quaternary step, which reduces the telegraphing speed by half. In the case of phase-modulated transmission, the four phase positions 0, 90, 180 and 270 ° are used, and to avoid ambiguity in the demodulated signal, phase differential modulation is also used here and, for example, identifies the step pair TZ as a phase jump of + 90 °, the step pair ZT as a phase jump of -90 °, the pair of steps TT as a phase jump of 180 ° and the pair of steps ZZ as "no phase jump". There is a phase jump of, for example, + 90 °, regardless of whether the phase position changes from 0 to 90 °, from 90 to 180 °, from 180 to 270 ° or from 270 to 0 °.
Entsprechend kann die Demodulation mit Hilfe von zwei orthogonalen Ver-The method of quaternary phase differential modulation has a number of disadvantages express mainly through great effort. In addition, there are the already mentioned code converters the sending and receiving side and on the receiving side an additional clock that responds to the received signal must be synchronized and the original in connection with the transcoder restores binary signal. Side entrance of the tilting stage K 2). When counting down, the state "both flip-flops down" is skipped (return from the lower output of the flip-flop K3 to the upper side input of the flip-flop K2 ). The output voltages of the counter are amplified in the amplifiers F1 to V 3 and are used for phase shift keying of the carrier frequency.
This carrier frequency is generated in the oscillator 05, for example. A network Ph connected downstream of this oscillator provides the carrier frequency in the three phase positions 0, 120 and 240 °. Each of the three carrier phases can be switched through to the transmission amplifier V 4 via a key modulator and fed to the transmission line L after passing through the transmission filter SF. For example, the key modulator for the carrier phase 120 ° consists of an input transformer E / 1 and a primary winding of the output transformer E / 4 common to all key modulators. The two transformers are connected via the pair of diodes D 1. In a similar way, the transformers U 2 and E / 3 are connected to the primary windings of the output transformer E / 4 via the diode pairs D 2 and D 3.
In the counter position "1" the coincidence gate G 5 is permeable, and a current flows from the amplifier Vl to the center tap of the first primary winding of the output transformer U 4, is divided over the two winding halves, flows through the diode pair D1 and two linearization resistors and the two halves of the secondary winding of E / l and reunites at the grounded center tap of this winding. The pair of diodes Dl is therefore permeable to the carrier alternating current of the phase position 120 °, which is smaller than the control current.
Fig. 4, Zeile &). As already mentioned, the toggle switch Kl is switched "down" in one character step and back again "up" in the middle of the following step. In this way, two steps are recorded in each case, which form a step pair ZT or ZZ (in FIG. 4, line b, these step pairs are identified by brackets). The intermediate state intervals that do not belong to such a pair of steps form the idle state of the ternary system. Depending on the random counter setting, each of the three carrier phases can represent the idle state. In the example shown, it has been assumed that the counter is in position "3" at the beginning of the transmission (the flip-flops Kl and K 3 are in the "up" position according to FIG. 4, lines d and e). The carrier phase 0 ° is sent. The first counting pulse (first rising edge of the curve according to FIG. 4, line c) meets an isolating current step (cf. FIG. 4, line &). As a result, the counter counts up and changes to position "1" (toggle stage K 2 in position "down", toggle stage K3 in position "up"). Instead of the carrier phase 0 °, the carrier phase 120 ° is switched on. This creates a phase jump of + 120 °, which transmits the step combination ZT. The three following pairs of steps, grouped together by brackets in Fig. 4, line b, are also ΖΓ-combinations, so the counter goes over the positions "2" and "3" back to "1" (cf. Fig. 4, line / ), and the keying of the carrier returns to 120 ° via the phase positions 240 and 0 ° (cf. also FIG. 3, in which the three different phase positions are shown in vector representation). This is followed by three step combinations ZZ immediately one after the other or at a distance of several separating current steps. The counter therefore goes from position "1" back to position "3", then to position "2" and back to position "1". Starting from 120 °, this switches successively to the carrier phase 0, 240 and again 120 °. The resulting phase jumps are each -120 °. The last pair of steps according to FIG. 4, line b, is again a ZT combination. The counter goes to position "2" and again causes a phase jump of + 120 °.
- In the case of the in F i g. 2, the carrier-frequency signal transmitted via the line L passes through the receiving filter EF, is appropriately amplified in the amplifier V 5, which is expediently designed as a limiter, and then fed to the two receiving modulators Ml and M 2 via a pair of input terminals. In addition, the amplified received signal is amplified again via a delay element TO and an additional phase-rotating network Tl, if necessary in the amplifier V 6, the second pair of input terminals of the modulator M1 and via the delay element Γ0 and another phase-rotating network T 2, possibly via the amplifier Vl, the second input terminal pair of the modulator M 2 supplied. Both modulators Ml and M 2 receive the carrier-frequency signal on the one hand directly, on the other hand delayed, and rotated in phase, supplied. The difference between the phase positions at the outputs of the amplifiers V 6 and Vl is expediently in the range between 60 and 120 °. A phase difference of 90 °, on which the example is based, is particularly advantageous. The total phase shift of the networks TO + Tl is 2 η π - π / 4 and of the networks Γ0 + Τ2 = 2 η π + π / 4. The delay in TO + Tl or in T0 + T2 was based on three quarters of the binary step duration. The demodulated signal at the output of the modulator Ml thus has approximately the curve according to FIG. 4, line g, and that at the output of the modulator M 2 has approximately the curve according to FIG. 4, line h.
As can be seen, with every positive phase jump there is a negative pulse at the output of the Modulator Ml and with each negative phase jump a negative pulse at the output of the modulator M 2. You only need each negative pulse of the modulator Ml for the duration of a binary step and to extend each negative pulse of the modulator M 2 to the duration of two binary steps and the extended pulses in an output circuit that is otherwise always held in a positive separating position unite to get the original binary message.
The input signal supplied via the omitted and each character step, for example 40 line ES , its course by a positive phase jump and each separating current in line b in FIG. 8 corresponds to the current step represented by a negative phase jump, is transmitted in the converter scarf. In the transmission circuit according to FIG. 1 device E is implemented in such a way that the output line T thereby omits the flip-flop Kl and the coincidence gate in the case of the disconnected state positive voltage and in the case of the character-Gl, that is, the clock pulse T becomes the instantaneous 45 state ground potential according to FIG. 8, line b, and the bar fed to the three-stage counter. With this, output line Z counts with each isolating current step by one voltage with each isolating current step and with positive voltage according to the step upwards with each symbol current step by F i g with each symbol current step. 8, line c, leads. The start-up steps are one step backwards. The idle state becomes F i g. 8, line c, highlighted by hatching, not transferred. The receiving circuit remains in 50. The clock generator TG is triggered at the beginning of each start-up in this case up to and including the coincidence gate step and supplies seven output GIO and GIl unchanged. The impulses from these two (this applies to normal telex characters with gates transmitted through impulses are given immediately five information steps, a start-up step and a latching step on various inputs), which are given approximately in the middle of the steps, and you get the output 55 of the individual characters lie (Fig. 8, line e). This flip-flop circuit immediately becomes the original pulse of the bistable flip-flop circuit K1 as a signal. The clock pulses are supplied by summing the output pulses. The flip-flop Kl corresponds to coincidence gates G10 and GIl, for example in the flip-flop with the same designation in FIG. 1, which is a mixing gate, one obtains an uninterrupted same applies to the coincidence gate G1. The remaining clock pulse, which for a possibly downstream part of the transmission circuit (not shown) corresponds to the message processing system in many cases, is also of great advantage to the exemplary embodiment according to FIG. 1. In Fig. 8, line /, are those in lines α to c
F i g. 5 shows an excerpt from a simplified transmission circuit corresponding to input information, which is then advantageously shown as phase jumps as can theoretically be applied if the input signal were to result in an infinitely large bandwidth. As a result of a form in which each of the frequency band narrowing to be transmitted by the transmission and character step or separation step by a or receiving filter, the phase changes in the received pulse on the input line ES are flattened according to the captured signal (Fig. 8, line g ).
The rate of change of the phase compared to a reference phase of the Carrier frequency is synonymous with a frequency change compared to that as a constant basis applied carrier frequency. This fact is in the receiving circuit according to FIG. 7 exploited.
The carrier-frequency signal arriving via the line L reaches the receiving amplifier VS via the receiving filter EF , where it is amplified and limited to a constant amplitude. If necessary, the higher-frequency components resulting from the limitation are eliminated again in the low-pass filter TP 1; if necessary, the signal is amplified again in the amplifier V 6 and then fed to the frequency discriminator DG. The output signal of the discriminator DC , after the elimination of higher-frequency demodulation components in the low-pass filter TP2, has the curve according to FIG. 8, line h. The positive and negative output pulses are separated from one another by the pulse splitter W. You can now extend these separate pulses, in the same way as the output pulses of the coincidence gates G10 and GIl in the embodiment of FIG. 2, to a duration of one or two character steps. The rising edges of the pulses according to FIG. 8, line h, however, are not very precise in terms of time because these rising edges originate from areas of low rate of change in the phase of the received signal. The exact times are at the apex of the impulses. Therefore, the differentiating elements D 1 and Dl are connected to the outputs of the pulse separator W. At the output of the differentiating element D 1, the originally positive pulses of line h have the course according to line k, where the part of the curve which steeply passes through the zero line defines the exact point in time for the start of the step. The same applies to the originally negative pulses which run at the output of the differentiating element D 2 according to line k . After possibly repeated amplification in the amplifiers F 9 or FlO, the derivatives of the pulses according to line / or k are fed to the monostable trigger circuit K 6 or the bistable trigger circuit K 7, which together with the monostable trigger circuits K 8 and K 9 and the Mixing gate G12 in the same way as in the embodiment of FIG. 2 shape the binary character steps.
Of course, you can also use the "idle state" to transmit a special signal, even if the transmission of messages is only binary. For example, the telephone network is often used to transmit digital messages. The desired connection is established by dialing, and after a telephone agreement, the digital transmission is switched over. The special signal transmitted by the idle state can then be used to call the operator back to the telephone, it being possible to switch back to the telephone set automatically at the same time. In the case of block-wise message transmission, the idle state can also serve as an end-of-block or block spacing signal (temporarily rhythmic operation). In order to increase the amount of messages that can be transmitted by means of phase differential modulation by three times (n - 3) without increasing the step speed, different modulation features are required in addition to the unmodulated carrier oscillation as a quiescent state in accordance with the relationship V2 -2 "= 4 already mentioned. The five carrier phases are preferably 0, +72, +144, -72 and -.. 144 ° (quinary keying) used in the binary input signal in each case only such a step groups (of three successive steps) are formed that begin with a character step example, then the step group ZTT by a Phase jump of + 72 °, the step group ZTZ by a phase jump of -72 °, the step group ZZT by a phase jump of + 144 ° and the step group ZZZ by a phase jump of -144 °. The carrier remains during the separation state intervals between the step groups in the most recently held phase position.
