Abstract
Activated carbon powders for hybrid supercapacitor battery systems may be formed from a corn cob or egg whites. In an example of a method for producing an example of the activated carbon powder, a corncob is dried and ground to form a precursor powder. The precursor powder is heat treated under an inert gas stream until a predetermined temperature is reached. While maintaining the predetermined temperature, the inert gas stream is replaced by an ammonia gas (NH) stream. With this method, a nitrogen-doped activated carbon powder is formed.

HINTERGRUNDBACKGROUND
Sophisticated energy storage systems are required to meet the needs of fast-growing applications in electric vehicles (EV). Among a variety of electrochemical energy storage systems, supercapacitors and lithium ion batteries are currently recognized as two promising systems. Supercapacitors are often used in power-based applications because they deliver a high power density (as high as 10 kW / kg) with a low energy density (less than 10 Wh / kg). In contrast, lithium-ion batteries are often used as energy-based systems because they can deliver high energy densities (100-200 Wh / kg).
ZUSAMMENFASSUNGSUMMARY
Activated carbon powders for hybrid supercapacitor battery systems may be formed from a corn cob or egg whites. In an example of a method for producing an example of the activated carbon powder, a corncob is dried and ground to form a precursor powder. The precursor powder is heat treated under an inert gas stream until a predetermined temperature is reached. While maintaining the predetermined temperature, the inert gas stream is replaced by an ammonia gas (NH 3 ) stream. With this method, a nitrogen-doped activated carbon powder is formed.
In another example of a method for producing an example of the activated carbon powder, a protein is diluted with water to form a protein solution. An alcohol is added to the protein solution to precipitate proteins from the protein solution. The precipitated proteins are filtered off and subjected to a heat treatment to form a carbonated protein. The carbonated protein is mixed with an alkali hydroxide base to form a mixture. The mixture is exposed to an activation temperature to form the activated carbon powder.

The systems disclosed herein are hybrid supercapacitor battery systems (eg, lithium ion capacitors) that integrate the high power density of supercapacitors into the high energy density of lithium ion batteries. In the hybrid supercapacitor battery systems disclosed herein, activated carbon-based materials may be used as the supercapacitor-type positive electrode materials, and silicon-carbon composite materials may be used as the lithium battery type negative electrode materials. The hybrid supercapacitor battery system is considered asymmetrical, in part because the positive electrode and negative electrode active materials are different types and because the supercapacitor type positive electrode material operates by sorption of ions and the negative electrode type lithium ion battery type material via ions Insertion / Intercalation works.
The activated carbon-based materials disclosed herein are formed from inexpensive agricultural carbon precursors and are produced by non-toxic manufacturing processes. The agricultural carbon precursors are corncobs or egg whites. The non-toxic manufacturing methods disclosed herein allow the resulting activated carbon-based materials to have a narrow pore size distribution, which helps the materials to provide a relatively high specific capacity.
The example of the process that uses corncob precursors is a one-step process that forms nitrogen-doped activated carbon. Nitrogen doping may increase the specific capacity, in part, due to the Faraday reaction of the nitrogen-containing functional groups and the improved wettability of the activated carbon pore walls. Nitrogen doping can also increase the conductivity of the activated carbon materials.
The one-step process that forms nitrogen-doped activated carbon begins with a dried and ground corncob precursor. The corncob may be dried (the corn cobs) at a temperature in the range of about 60 ° C to about 200 ° C for a time in the range of about 1 hour to about 24 hours. In one example, the corncob (may be the corncob) may be dried at about 120 ° C for about 12 hours. The dried corncob can (the dried corncobs can) under Use of any suitable mill and grinding can be carried out until a precursor powder is obtained.
In einem Beispiel liegt der Stickstoffgehalt im Bereich von etwa 2 Gew.-% bis etwa 4 Gew.-%.In one example, the nitrogen-doped charcoal powder formed from corncob precursors in accordance with the method disclosed herein has a micro to mesopore size distribution. The nitrogen-doped activated carbon powder formed from corncob precursors according to the method disclosed herein also has a nitrogen content in the range of about 1 wt% to about 10 wt%. In one example, the nitrogen content ranges from about 2 wt% to about 4 wt%.
The example of the method that uses protein precursors is a biomass transfer process that forms activated carbon powder. The egg whites may be diluted with water in a ratio of protein: water ranging from about 1: 1 to about 1:10. In one example of the method, the proteins are diluted with water in a ratio of 1: 4 to form a transparent protein solution. An alcohol, for example, methanol, ethanol, isopropanol, etc., is poured into the protein solution to precipitate the proteins. The precipitated protein proteins are then filtered off and carbonized in a tube furnace under an inert gas stream (eg Ar). Carbonation may take place by raising the temperature of the tube furnace to a temperature in the range of about 400 ° C to about 700 ° C for a period of time in the range of about 1 hour to about 5 hours at a suitable heating rate. In one example, the temperature of the tube furnace is increased up to 650 ° C for 2 hours at a heating rate of 5 ° C min -1 . As a result of heating, a carbonated protein is formed.
In one example, the activated carbon powder formed from protein precursors according to the method disclosed herein has a micro to mesopore size distribution.
Either the nitrogen-doped activated carbon powder or the activated carbon powder formed by the methods disclosed herein can be used to form a positive electrode. In an example of the method of producing the positive electrode, the nitrogen-doped activated carbon powder or the activated carbon powder is mixed with a polymer binder and a conductive filler.
The polymer binder structurally holds the nitrogen-doped activated carbon powder or the activated carbon powder and the conductive filler together. Some examples of suitable polymer binders include polyvinylidene fluoride (PVdF), polyethylene oxide (PEO), an ethylene-propylene-diene monomer (EPDM). Rubber, carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), styrene-butydiene rubber (SBR), styrene-butadiene rubber-carboxymethylcellulose (SBR-CMC), polyacrylic acid (PAA), cross-linked polyacrylic acid-polyethyleneimine, polyimide, or any other suitable binder material. Examples of still other suitable binders include polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), sodium alginate or other water-soluble binders.
The nitrogen-doped activated carbon powder or the activated carbon powder may be present in the mixture in an amount ranging from greater than 0 wt.% To 99 wt.% (Based on the total solids weight percent of the dispersion / mixture). The conductive filler and the binder may each be present in an amount ranging from about 0% to about 99% by weight. In one example, the mixture may contain from about 50% to about 95% by weight (based on the total solids weight percent of the dispersion / mixture) of the nitrogen-doped charcoal powder or charcoal powder, from 5% to about 20% by weight % (based on the total solids weight percent of the dispersion / mixture) of the conductive filler and about 5% to about 20% by weight (based on the total solids weight percent of the dispersion / mixture) of the binder. All of these components can be mixed manually by dry milling.
All of these components are ground together, the ground components are combined with water or organic solvent (depending on the binder used) to form a dispersion / slurry. In one example, the solvent is a polar aprotic solvent. Examples of suitable polar aprotic solvents include dimethylacetamide (DMAc), N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP), dimethylformamide (DMF), dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) or another Lewis base, or combinations thereof. When a water-soluble binder, for example, sodium alginate, is used, the solvent may be water.
The dispersion can be mixed by grinding. Milling aids in the conversion of the dispersion into a coatable slurry. Low shear milling or high shear milling may be used to mix the dispersion. The dispersion meal ranges from about 10 minutes to about 20 hours, depending on the grinding shear rate. In one example, a rotary mixer is used for about 20 minutes at about 2000 rpm to grind the dispersion.
The slurry is then deposited on a support. In one example, the carrier is a positive side current collector. It is understood that the positive-side current collector may be formed of aluminum or other suitable electrically conductive material known to those skilled in the art. The carrier selected should be able to collect free electrons and move to and from an external associated circuit.
The slurry may then be deposited using a suitable technique. For example, the slurry may be cast on the surface of the carrier or it may be spread on the surface of the carrier or it may be applied to the surface of the carrier using a slot die coater.
The deposited slurry may be subjected to a drying process to remove any remaining solvent and / or water. Drying can be accomplished using any suitable technique. For example, drying is carried out at ambient conditions (i.e., room temperature, about 18 ° C to 22 ° C, and 1 atmosphere). Drying may be carried out at an elevated temperature in the range of about 60 ° C to about 150 ° C. Vacuum may also be used in some examples to speed up the drying process. As an example of the drying process, the deposited slurry may be exposed to a vacuum at about 120 ° C for about 12 to 24 hours.
In one example, the thickness of the dried slurry (ie, the positive electrode) ranges from about 5 μm to about 200 μm. In another example, the thickness of the dried slurry (ie, the positive electrode) ranges from about 10 μm to about 100 μm.
During the formation of the positive electrode, the water and / or the organic solvent (s) are removed, and thus the resulting positive electrode comprises about 50% to about 95% by weight (based on the total) of the positive electrode. % By weight of the positive electrode) of the nitrogen-doped charcoal powder or charcoal powder, about 5% to 20% by weight (based on the total weight percent of the positive electrode) of the conductive filler, and about 5% to 20% by weight Wt .-% (based on the total weight percent of the positive electrode) of the binder.

The mass ratio (N / P ratio) of the active electrode materials was optimized to 2: 1 for best electrochemical performance and energy / power density.
In Example 1, the N-doped corn cobs were synthesized by a one-step method. The NACs obtained showed excellent electrochemical performance with a specific capacity up to 129 mAh / g and a capacity retention of 86% in 5000 cycles. It has been found that N-doping of NACs supports performance improvement. The hybrid type supercapacitor was also assembled and evaluated using NACs and Si / C nanocomposite. With the optimized N / P ratio, the hybrid system exhibited high energy densities of 230 to 141 Wh / kg at power densities of 1747 to 30127 W / kg, which are among the highest for hybrid-type systems described. Also, good long-cycle stability was obtained with a capacity retention of 77% after 5000 cycles for the supercapacitor of the hybrid type.

Charakterisierungen characterizations

CV-Diagramme in
In summary of Example 2, new activated carbons were synthesized from egg white by a simple biomass transfer process. The electrochemical performance of the obtained eAC materials showed a specific capacity as high as 128 mAh / g with good capacity retention. The hybrid supercapacitor battery full cells had material level energy densities of 257-147 Wh / kg at power densities of 867-29,893 W / kg, which is the highest energy-to-power ratio among all hybrid type supercapacitors described. In addition, this device can achieve long cycle life with 79% capacity retention after 5000 cycles. The high performance of these hybrid supercapacitor battery cells is attributed to the eAC materials which benefit from synergistic effects of both the favorable surface carboxyl groups as well as the high specific surface area, high microporosity as well as good electron conductivity.
