Description
The invention relates to expandable styrene polymer granules having an ellipsoidal geometry and a longest dimension (a) and two shorter extensions (b) and (c) perpendicular thereto, characterized in that the shorter extensions (b) and (c) are in the range of 0, 4 to 1.2 mm and the ratio γ of the shortest dimension (c) to the longest dimension (a) is in the range of 0.4 to 0.7.
Process for the preparation of expandable styrene polymers, such as expandable polystyrene (EPS) by suspension polymerization has been known for a long time. These methods have the disadvantage that large amounts of wastewater accumulate and must be disposed of. The polymers must be dried to remove internal water. In addition, the suspension polymerization usually leads to broad bead size distributions, which have to be sieved consuming into different bead fractions.

To achieve optimum Dammeigenschaften and good surfaces of the foam body, the cell number and foam structure, which occurs during expansion of the expandable styrene polymers (EPS), is of crucial importance. The EPS granules produced by extrusion often can not be foamed to form foams with optimum foam structure.
Due to different granulation types and conditions, granular or cylindrical ellipsoidal granule forms can occur during granulation. Sharp-edged strand pellets show poor trickling behavior as well as chipping and abrasion during transport, which can have a detrimental effect on the processing into foam moldings.
In the suspension polymerization of styrene in the presence of blowing agent, spherical polymer beads having a broad bead size distribution are formed. The pearls of different bead sizes can segregate during pneumatic conveying or during transport. Due to the small contact surface of spherical granules, in the foam molding production can lead to insufficient welding and thus to a lower flexural strength.
The object of the invention was to overcome the abovementioned disadvantages and to produce expandable styrene polymer pellets with ellipsoidal geometry, which have a higher bulk density and an improved filling behavior during processing into foam moldings with sophisticated geometry.
Bevorzugt liegen die kürzeren Ausdehnungen (b) und (c) im Bereich von 0,4 bis 1,2 mm und das Verhältnis γ der kürzesten Ausdehnung (c) zur längsten Ausdehnung (a) im Bereich von 0,55 bis 0,65.Preferably, the shorter extents (b) and (c) are in the range of 0.4 to 1.2 mm, and the ratio γ of the shortest extents (c) to the longest extents (a) is in the range of 0.55 to 0.65.
The styrene polymer granules of the present invention can be prepared by melt extrusion followed by underwater granulation, wherein the melt temperature and cut frequency can be varied to set the desired geometry.
It has been found that styrene polymers with molecular weights M w of less than 160,000 lead to polymer abrasion during granulation. Preferably, the expandable styrene polymer has a molecular weight in the range of 190,000 to 400,000 g / mol, more preferably in the range of 220,000 to 300,000 g / mol. Due to the reduction in molecular weight by shear and / or temperature, the molecular weight of the expandable polystyrene is usually about 10,000 g / mol below the molecular weight of the polystyrene used.
In order to obtain the smallest possible granulate particles, the strand expansion after the nozzle exit should be as low as possible. It has been shown that the strand expansion can be influenced inter alia by the molecular weight distribution of the styrene polymer. The expandable styrene polymer should therefore preferably have a molecular weight distribution with a nonuniformity M w / Mn of at most 3.5, more preferably in the range of 1.5 to 2.8, and most preferably in the range of 1.8 to 2.6.

In order to produce targeted granule size distributions of the styrene polymers, the nozzle plate can be equipped with bores of different exit diameters (D). The various embodiments of the nozzle geometry can also be combined.

In step f), the granulation can be carried out directly behind the nozzle plate under water at a pressure in the range of 1 to 25 bar, preferably 5 to 15 bar.
As a result of the polymerization in stage a) and degassing in stage b), a polymer melt is directly available for the blowing agentimpregnation in stage c) and melting of styrene polymers is not necessary. Not only is this more economical, it also results in expandable styrene polymers (EPS) with low styrene monomer contents because the mechanical shear in the reflow zone of an extruder, which usually results in the back-cleavage of monomers, is avoided. In order to keep the styrene monomer content low, in particular below 500 ppm with Styrolmomomergehalten, it is also appropriate to keep the mechanical and thermal energy input in all subsequent process steps as low as possible. Shear rates of less than 50 sec, preferably 5 to 30 / sec, and temperatures below 260 ° C. and short residence times in the range from 1 to 20, preferably 2 to 10, minutes in stages c) to e) are therefore particularly preferred. Particular preference is given to using only static mixers and static coolers in the entire process. The polymer melt can by pressure pumps, z. B. gear pumps funded and discharged.
A further possibility for reducing the styrene monomer content and / or residual solvents, such as ethylbenzene, is to provide high degassing by means of entrainers, for example water, nitrogen or carbon dioxide, in step b) or to carry out the polymerization step a) anionically. The anionic polymerization of styrene leads not only to styrene polymers with a low styrene monomer content but at the same time to low styrene oligomer contents.
To improve processability, the final expandable styrenic polymer granules may be coated by glycerol esters, antistatic agents or anticaking agents.
The expandable styropolymer granules according to the invention have an ellipsoidal geometry without sharp edges and can therefore be conveyed very well pneumatically without abrasion. They can be prefoamed for the production of particle foam moldings in a first step by means of hot air or steam to foam particles having a density in the range of 8 to 100 g / l and welded in a second step in a closed mold. Here, their good filling behavior proves to be an advantage.
