Description
The invention relates to a method for carburizing steel parts at a temperature above 930 ° C with a carbon donor gas within an evacuable treatment chamber.
The carburizing is usually carried out in the temperature range of 850 ° C to 1000 ° C, wherein a hydrocarbon gas is used as a donor medium for carbon. A heater is installed in the oven to control the batch temperature during the carburizing process. As a carbon donor is usually acetylene, propane or ethylene.
During carburizing, the surface layer of the workpieces is enriched with carbon, carbonitriding with carbon and nitrogen. As the nitrogen-emitting gas, ammonia is advantageously used.
Case hardening by atmospheric gas carburizing and oil quenching is the most important heat treatment process for transmission components. The actual carburizing process takes place in the range of 870 ° C-930 ° C. Although desirable from an economic point of view, the treatment temperature can not be increased significantly above 1000 ° C for procedural and plant engineering reasons. In order to increase the economy in case hardening, vacuum carburizing processes have been developed. With the same carburizing temperature, the vacuum carburization by the higher carbon transition of the hydrocarbons used as a carbon donor allows a significant reduction in process time compared to the atmospheric gas carburizing. The use of oxygen-free carburizing gases makes edge oxidation-free case hardening possible.
Another major advantage of vacuum carburizing is to further increase productivity by increasing the carburizing temperature beyond the current range of 870 ° C-930 ° C. The reason for this is on the one hand the increasing carbon solubility of the material in the austenite region with temperature, on the other hand the increasing diffusion speed of the carbon into the component interior with the temperature. Both lead to a further reduction in the duration of treatment. The corresponding vacuum carburizing plants are excellently suitable for process temperatures well above 1000 ° C due to the furnace construction materials used there. The increase in cost-effectiveness through high-temperature carburizing processes can be seen, for example, by carburising a case hardening steel 18CrNiMo7-6 to a carburizing depth of 1.5 mm. By raising the carburizing temperature from 930 ° C to 1030 ° C, the total carburizing process time can be increased from 8.5 hours to 3 hours, that is, 10 hours. H. significantly reduce by 65.
A significant increase in the carburizing temperature is counteracted by the case-hardening steels currently used in gearbox manufacture, which at temperatures above 930 ° C may be prone to grain coarsening or mixed grain formation. This proves to be detrimental to the later use properties. It has been shown that the Grobkorbildung by alloying fine grain stabilizing elements, for. As aluminum, titanium and niobium, can move to significantly higher temperatures. Corresponding steels are also suitable without problems for higher carburizing temperatures.
So liegt z. However, mixed or coarse grain formation is also observed in the vacuum carburization of fine-grain-stabilized case-hardened steels in the edge zone of the components. This effect is accompanied by a local decrease in the nitrogen content in the component edge zone compared to the original nitrogen content. The cause of this behavior is an effusion of nitrogen from the rim during vacuum carburization. This leads to a dissolution of fine grain stabilizing special nitrides. So is z. For example, the dissolution temperature of Nb (C, N) precipitates at existing 0.012 mass% nitrogen at about 1100 ° C. A reduction of the nitrogen content to 0.006% by mass of nitrogen shifts the dissolution temperature for these precipitates to about 1000 ° C. The coarse grain formation associated with the resolution proves to be detrimental to the strength properties of the highly stressed transmission components and is therefore highly undesirable.
In order to reduce the nitrogen effusion, the diffusion treatment following the actual carburizing process is sometimes carried out under a partial pressure of nitrogen instead of under vacuum. However, extensive tests show that coarse or mixed grain formation can not be prevented.
Although an increase in the nitrogen content in the base material to reduce the effect of the subsequent nitrogen reduction is possible in principle, it proves to be detrimental to the production process of the steels (eg the casting) and possibly also as a disadvantage for the mechanical properties (reduction of the Toughness). In addition, micro-alloyed steels for high-temperature carburization for nitride formation sometimes require such high nitrogen requirements due to thermochemistry as can not be demonstrated by current metallurgical plants. Here, an increase in the nitrogen content in the coarse grain-sensitive surface layer of the component during high-temperature carburizing would offer itself as a process engineering solution.
The few processes known so far for vacuum bonding are limited to the addition of nitrogen-releasing media at temperatures below the carbonization temperature, since nitrogen solubility in the austenite region increases with decreasing temperature.
The present invention has for its object during the Hochtemperaturaufkohlungsprozesses above about 950 ° C to maintain the nitrogen content in the edge zone or specifically to increase to prevent the dissolution of Sonderitriden and thus a high temperature carburizing without harmful coarse or mixed grain formation in allow the workpiece edge zone.
This object is achieved by a method in which both during the heating phase above 930 ° C, as well as during the diffusion phase nitrogen-emitting gas, eg. As ammonia, pulsed or continuously introduced into the treatment chamber. Further details and features are described in more detail in the claims and characterized.
Die Erfindung lässt die verschiedensten Ausführungsmöglichkeiten zu und zwar zeigen:The invention allows for a variety of execution options and namely show:
With the method according to the invention, it is thus possible, without additional process steps, to prevent the nitrogen effusion during vacuum carburization and thus to reliably prevent harmful coarse grain formation in the edge zone.
Furthermore, the process offers the possibility of high-temperature carburizing materials, which have a rather low basic nitrogen content and thus are less expensive to cast or hot-form. The addition of a nitrogen donating medium during high-temperature vacuum carburization results in the formation of special nitrides, which ensures fine grain stability.
