Description
The invention relates to a method for operating a fuel cell system with at least one fuel cell stack. In addition, a control device for carrying out steps of the method is proposed.
The preferred area of application is mobile fuel cell systems or fuel cell vehicles, in particular fuel cell vehicles with a high power requirement, such as buses and trucks.
Stand der TechnikState of the art
Hydrogen-based fuel cells convert hydrogen and oxygen into electrical energy, heat and water. In mobile fuel cell systems, the electrical energy generated with the help of the fuel cells is used as drive energy. Since hydrogen-based fuel cells only emit water as exhaust gas and enable quick refueling times, they are considered the mobility concept of the future.
The core of a fuel cell is the membrane electrode arrangement (MEA). This includes a membrane that is coated on both sides with a catalytic material to form electrodes. The electrodes or catalyst layers typically consist of platinum particles that are applied to larger carbon particles. While the platinum particles form the catalyst, the carbon phase ensures the transport of electrons and heat.
In practice, to increase performance, a large number of fuel cells are combined into a fuel cell stack, the so-called stack. In addition, multiple fuel cell stacks can be combined to form a multi-stack fuel cell system.
Long, uninterrupted operation of a fuel cell stack usually leads to performance losses, so that the efficiency of the entire system decreases and hydrogen consumption increases. However, the performance losses are usually reversible, so countermeasures can be taken. For example, in the event of a loss of performance due to oxidation of the platinum particles and the resulting decrease in the reaction surface, a so-called “oxygen bleed-down” can be carried out. During “oxygen bleed-down,” the voltage of the fuel cell stack is reduced and the residual oxygen in the cathode is electrochemically reduced.
However, such countermeasures, also known as “recovery” strategies, can usually only be taken the next time the system is shut down, so that until then the system will operate with low efficiency.
The object of the present invention is to remedy this so that the efficiency in the operation of a fuel cell system increases.
To solve the problem, the method with the features of claim 1 is proposed. Advantageous embodiments can be found in the subclaims. In addition, a control device for carrying out steps of the method is proposed.
Offenbarung der ErfindungDisclosure of the invention
- S1 starting a recovery function and applying the function to the fuel cell stack,
- S2 ensuring uninterrupted operation of the fuel cell system while using the recovery function through at least one measure to compensate for the electrical power of the fuel cell stack,
- S3 interrupting the air supply to the fuel cell stack,
- S4 electrochemical reduction of residual oxygen present on the cathode side,
- S5 Restore air supply to the fuel cell stack and resume normal operation,
- S6 Termination of at least one measure for compensating the electrical power and
- S7 exiting the recovery function.
The application of the recovery function is power-neutral, since the proposed method compensates for the lack of electrical power of the fuel cell stack. This means that the operation of the fuel cell system does not have to be interrupted in order to carry out the method according to the invention. In this way, performance losses can be avoided during longer uninterrupted operating times. The result is an increase in the efficiency of the entire system and a reduction in hydrogen consumption.
The measures specified in steps S3 and S4 essentially describe an oxygen bleed-down. With the help of these measures, a loss in performance can be counteracted in particular, which can be attributed to an oxide layer that forms on the platinum particles of the cathode-side catalyst layers during prolonged operation. The measures can also serve to remove other contaminants on the platinum particles.
The recovery function can always be used when a reversible loss of performance is detected or assumed, for example due to the passage of time.
To detect a reversible loss of performance, the current voltage of the fuel cell stack can be compared with a predefined reference value. For example, the voltage of the fuel cell stack when the fuel cell system is started up or when the fuel cell vehicle starts driving can serve as a reference value. The voltage of the fuel cell stack is then measured at the respective time and stored as a reference value, for example in a control unit of the fuel cell system. If the comparison results in a deviation that is too large, for example a deviation of 10% or more, the recovery function can be applied.
Alternatively or additionally, to detect a reversible loss of performance, the cell voltages of the fuel cell stack can be measured and compared with a reference value, an impedance value of the fuel cell stack or an impedance value of the fuel cells. These values are also determined and stored in advance, for example in a control unit of the fuel cell system.
Furthermore, it is suggested that steps S1 to S7 of the method be carried out at regular intervals. This means that a time interval is determined that suggests the occurrence of a reversible loss of performance during uninterrupted operation. The time interval can be, for example, 20 minutes, so that the recovery function is applied at least every 20 minutes.
In a further development of the invention, it is proposed that at least one shut-off valve arranged on the cathode side is closed to interrupt the air supply to the fuel cell stack. As a rule, a first shut-off valve is provided at the inlet and a further shut-off valve at the outlet of the fuel cell stack. By closing the shut-off valves it can be ensured that the air supply to the fuel cell stack is interrupted.
Closing the shut-off valves is optional because a sufficient reduction of the oxide layer that has formed on the platinum particles of the cathode-side catalyst layers occurs even without the cathode shut off, as long as the air supply to the fuel cell stack is interrupted.
Furthermore, it is proposed that the electrical power of the fuel cell stack is compensated for by at least one further fuel cell stack and/or a battery during the application of the recovery function. The compensation of the electrical power using the electrical power of at least one additional fuel cell stack requires that the fuel cell system is designed as a multi-stack fuel cell system. If this is the case, the lack of electrical power of the fuel cell stack to which the recovery function is currently applied can be compensated for by power splitting. If this is not the case, the missing electrical power can be provided via a battery in the fuel cell system.
In addition, a control device is proposed which is set up to carry out steps of a method according to the invention. For example, a recovery protocol can be stored in the control device, according to which the method is carried out at regular time intervals and/or when a reversible loss of performance is detected. Furthermore, a reversible loss of performance can be detected with the help of at least one reference value that is stored in the control unit.
The invention and its advantages are explained in more detail below with reference to the accompanying drawing. This shows a flowchart to illustrate a preferred sequence of the method according to the invention.
Ausführliche Beschreibung der ZeichnungDetailed description of the drawing
The steps S1 to S7 described below are carried out during operation of a fuel cell system upon detection or assumption of a reversible performance loss of a fuel cell stack.
For this purpose, a recovery function is started in step S1, the application of which should lead to the regeneration of the fuel cell stack. The function is therefore applied to the fuel cell stack.
The measure in step S2 ensures uninterrupted operation of the fuel cell system while the recovery function is being used. The measure can consist of a power split being carried out if the fuel cell system is designed as a multi-stack fuel cell system. The missing electrical power of the fuel cell stack to be regenerated is then replaced by the electrical power of at least one further fuel cell stack. When the power of the fuel cell stack to be regenerated is ramped down, the power of the at least one further fuel cell stack is then ramped up. Alternatively or additionally, the missing electrical power can be provided by a battery of the fuel cell system.
In step S3, the air supply to the fuel cell stack that is to be regenerated is interrupted. Optionally, in a step S3`, shut-off valves arranged on the cathode side can be closed so that the fuel cell stack to be regenerated is separated from an air system through which it is supplied with air during normal operation. An oxygen bleed-down is then carried out in step S4, so that impurities present on the platinum particles of the cathode-side catalyst layers are removed. The regeneration of the fuel cell stack is now complete.
In step S5, the interruption of the air supply to the fuel cell stack can therefore be canceled again. If any shut-off valves on the cathode side have been closed, they will now be opened again. The regenerated fuel cell stack is put back into operation so that it delivers electrical power. As a result, the at least one measure for compensating the electrical power can be ended in step S6.
In Schritt S7 wird die Recovery-Funktion beendet. The recovery function is ended in step S7.
