Verfahren zum Betreiben eines Brennstoffzellenstapels Method for operating a fuel cell stack
The invention relates to a method for operating a fuel cell stack having at least one individual cell according to the type defined in more detail in the preamble of claim 1. Further, the invention relates to the use of a structure for the recirculation of exhaust gas from a cathode space of a fuel cell stack with at least one individual cell, in particular a PEM. Fuel cell, in the region of an oxidant flowing to the cathode space.
One of the major problems in the use of Brennstoff¬ cell stacks for energy production is their limited life or a sometimes very strong, associated with ent-speaking power losses degradation of the individual cells with increasing operating time. The main reason for this is today seen in corrosion processes which can lead to damage to gas distributors, bipolar plates, catalysts and, at least when using membrane electrolytes, also to damage to the membrane or the electrolyte. Such harmful processes occur predominantly when the temperature in the fuel cell stack is rather high and the potentials of the individual cells are above a critical voltage value. The latter is especially the case when the electrical load of the fuel cell stack is very low. Experiments have shown that in particular above a critical voltage of the individual cells is to be expected with increased damage.
First, it should be noted that above the critical voltage value, oxidation of carbon from the commonly used carbon support of the catalyst begins. The CO 2 oxidized carbon volatilizes. This leads to a loss of mechanical and electrical connection of the catalyst grains, which typically consist of platinum. In the following step, the platinum grains sinter together, whereby electrochemically active surface is lost. The result is a loss of activity of the electrode provided with the catalyst. In particular, such a weakening of the power-determining cathode has a very adverse effect on the performance of the fuel cell stack. Furthermore, a potential of the individual cells above the critical voltage value causes increased damage to the metallic bipolar plates commonly used in compact fuel cell stacks, because then there is an increased electrochemical corrosion of the material of the bipolar plate. In addition, at such high potentials of the single cells, the fuel and the oxidizer do not completely react on the catalyst. As a result, residues of these reaction gases can penetrate to the membrane and diffuse into or through it. Due to the then formed mixtures of fuel and oxidant, the formation of undesirable Neben¬ products, such as hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), favored. However, such by-products can permanently damage the polymer membrane, up to the formation of holes through the membrane. The general state of the art in fuel cell stacks is also known, for example, from WO 94/03937 A1, from DE 102 03 029 A1 and from DE 102 46 168 A1, at least part of the cathode exhaust gas flowing into the region of the cathode Attributed gas. This recirculation of the cathode exhaust gas causes an improvement in the moistening of the membranes in the fuel cell stack.
It is the object of the invention to provide a method for operating a fuel cell stack, which enables a reliable and safe operation thereof, without an age-related degradation occurs.
Furthermore, it is the object of the invention to use a structure for the cathode gas recirculation of a fuel cell stack so that a reliable and safe operation of the fuel cell stack is made possible without an age-related degradation occurs.
According to the invention, the object is achieved by a method having the features of the characterizing part of claim 1.
By at least temporarily diluting the volume flow of oxidizing agent, for example with an inert gas, such as nitrogen or the like, the oxygen partial pressure in the oxidizing agent is reduced. This leads to a reduction in the supply of reactants during dilution and thus to a lower voltage potential of the individual cells. The above-mentioned, occurring at higher potentials of the individual cells problems in terms of their damage can be largely avoided. This is due to the inventive method reliable and safe operation of the fuel cell stack. Aging effects that lead to degradation of the fuel cell stack can be prevented.
The fact that the volume flow of the oxidizing agent per se is not reduced but only diluted, a high volume flow through the cathode space can be ensured even at low oxygen partial pressure. The uniform flow and supply of all individual cells typically connected in parallel in the fuel cell stack, as well as the uniform removal of by-products and product water, can be ensured. Thus, there is no need to fear a shortage of individual individual cells, which then drop very sharply in their voltage and would possibly go into the negative range. Thus, a "tip over" of the single cells in the negative region (so-called "cell reversal") and the associated very harmful electrolysis mode of overturned single cells can be reliably prevented.
A particularly advantageous embodiment of the solution according to the invention is given by the features in the characterizing part of claim 2.
By using deoxygenated cathode offgas to dilute the oxidant, dilution can be carried out in a particularly favorable and effective manner, without having to provide an inert gas or the like for this purpose. In addition to the simple and effective provision of the gas for dilution, thereby at least partially also known from the prior art advantage in terms of humidification of the oxidizing agent and thus the membrane is achieved because in the recirculated part of the cathode exhaust gas is always present moisture.
A use according to the invention which achieves the above-mentioned object is given by the features of claim 6.
The inventive use of the structure for cathode gas recirculation to limit the oxygen partial pressure, thus also allows the limitation of the voltage applied to the individual cells potentials. Thus, the abovementioned factors of aging or damage to the fuel cell stack are avoided by the use according to the invention of the construction. In this case, the oxidizing agent can be diluted easily and efficiently by the recirculated cathode exhaust gas, with all the advantages already mentioned above also result for the new use of the known construction for cathode gas recirculation.
Further advantageous embodiments of the invention will become apparent from the remaining dependent claims and from the nach¬ following explained in more detail with reference to the drawing Ausführungs¬ example.

The stack 1 is composed essentially of a cathode space 2 and an anode space 3, which in the Here, the preferred case of PEM fuel cells are separated as single cells by a membrane-electrode assembly 4, short MEA 4. A fuel, generally hydrogen or a hydrogen-containing gas, flows into the anode chamber 3. This fuel reacts at the MEA 4 to form electrical energy with the located in the cathode compartment 2 oxidizing agent. In this case, oxygen or preferably air can be used as the oxidizing agent. The supply of fuel to the anode compartment 3 and, if appropriate, the removal of residual gases or the recirculation of the fuel play no part in the method to be explained here, so that they will not be discussed in more detail below.
The oxidizing agent, preferably air, is conveyed to the cathode space 2 via a conveying device 5, for example a conventional compressor. In this case, the oxidizing agent, at least when needed, diluted via a conduit member 6 with a medium having a lower oxygen content than the oxidizing agent. In addition to in principle also conceivable entrained inert gas, for example nitrogen or the like, the medium used for dilution in the structure shown here originates from the exhaust gas leaving the cathode space 2. This cathode off-gas is the oxidant depleted of oxygen by the reaction at the MEA 4. In addition, the cathode exhaust gas will have a certain moisture content and thus contribute to a partial humidification of the oxidant flowing into the cathode space 2. However, all humidification-relevant aspects are known from the prior art mentioned above, so that the subject of humidification should not be discussed further here. The targeted recirculation of a part of the cathode exhaust gas takes place through the line 6 into the region of the oxidant flow upstream of the conveying device 5. In principle, the metering would also be possible in any other areas, for example in the region between the conveying device 5 and the cathode compartment in the line 6, however, its own conveyor, such as a compressor or driven by the oxidant stream Jetpump be provided. The structure shown in Fig. 1, however, is to be preferred alone because of its smaller number of components. Furthermore, the efficiency of the conveyor 5 can be slightly increased due to the humidity in the recirculated cathode exhaust gas.
The amount of recirculated cathode exhaust gas and thus the dilution of the oxidizing agent or the oxygen partial pressure of the oxidizing agent reaching into the cathode chamber can be adjusted or regulated by a controllable or controllable valve device 7. The valve device 7 can thus freely set the amount of oxygen ready for reaction or the oxygen partial pressure present in the volume flow of the oxidizing agent and thereby the voltage potentials generated by the individual cells.
Der Bereich zwischen 0 und OCV/2 ist zwar nicht schädlich, aber unerwünscht, da die Einzelzelle hier nur mit geringer Effizienz arbeitet.2, the schematic characteristic curve 8 of a single cell of the stack 1 is shown in dashed lines in a current (I) voltage (U) diagram. The preferred power range P of the single cell is between P max at about half of the open circuit voltage (OCV) OCV / 2 and P m i n at a critical voltage U kr i t . Above this critical voltage U ^ ri t ^ which, according to experiments carried out for a PEM single cell at about 850 mV, it comes in the single cell to those already mentioned above harmful processes, such as oxidation of the catalyst support, corrosion of the metallic bipolar plate and formation of harmful byproducts, in which mainly the cause of the degradation of the individual cells and thus of the stack 1 over the service life must be seen. The voltage range above the critical voltage U kr i t is therefore to be avoided. The voltage range between OCV / 2 and Ukri t is that of the normal and desired operating state of the stack 1. The range between 0 and OCV / 2 is not harmful, but undesirable because the single cell works here only with low efficiency.
One way of avoiding the occurrence of potentials of the individual cells above the critical voltage U k ri t is in principle the limitation of the amount of oxidant supplied. However, due to the then typically very low volume flow of oxidizing agent, this very quickly leads to uniform distribution problems in the parallel interconnected individual cells of the stack 1, ie individual single cells receive less oxidizing agent than others and thereby decrease greatly in voltage or even tilt into the negative one Range of voltage (U <0). Such a tipping over of the voltage of the single cells, which is typically caused by DC distribution problems, and the individual cell's electrolysis mode thus occurring is extremely harmful. Such operation in a negative voltage range is therefore also to be avoided.
In order to make it possible to limit the single-cell potentials to a value below the critical voltage U kr i t of 850 mV and at the same time ensure uniform distribution of the oxidizing agent and thus of the voltages of the individual cells in the stack 1, a sufficiently high volume flow of the oxidizing agent must be independent of the operating state through the cathode be reached. In order nevertheless to be able to limit the tension in the desired manner, the dilution of the oxidizing agent with cathode exhaust gas already enriched in oxygen, as described, limits the partial pressure of oxygen in the dilute oxidizing agent. By adjusting the metering ratio of recirculated cathode exhaust to supplied fresh oxidant, such as sucked purified ambient air, by means of the valve means 7, virtually any oxygen partial pressure can be adjusted freely. Thus, the voltage of the individual cells can be limited at any power decrease up to the maximum value of the critical voltage U kr i t . Thus, the curve 8 'shown in solid line in FIG. 2 is established.
The free adjustability of the oxygen partial pressure by the recirculated manganese cathode exhaust for dilution of the oxidant allows it so that operation of the individual cells, especially for small required by the stack 1 services, so that all individual cells of the stack 1 always with potentials below the critical Voltage Uk r i t = approx. 850 mV. Nevertheless, the volumetric flow rate of the oxidizing agent entering the cathode space 2 is sufficiently high that all individual cells are uniformly flown. In this case, a lower volume flow limit adapted to the structural conditions of the stack 1 can be specified, below which the volumetric flow never drops under any desired oxygen partial pressure.
Optimal is a potential-controlled control of the valve device 7 in such a way that the dilution is adjusted so that the output from each of the individual cells voltage is maximum, but never beyond the critical Voltage value Ukri t = approx. 850 mV increases. Thus, by using the above-mentioned advantages of the dilution of the oxidizing agent per se, a best possible power density of the stack 1 can be achieved.
As an alternative or additional possibility, the current or power range could be below P m j. n be covered by a battery and / or a capacitive energy storage of suitable size. Due to such a hybridization of a fuel cell system, the fuel cell stack 1 could be switched off at power requirements below P m i n . Although harmful conditions for the individual cells could be avoided in the first approach, this is very complex both in terms of apparatus and control technology. Furthermore, during the necessary start-up and shut-down procedures, potential increases of the individual cells over the critical voltage U 1 i t may temporarily continue, so that the harmful processes can not be completely suppressed.
It is therefore much simpler, more efficient and more advantageous to limit the voltage of the individual cells in the partial load range upward by the stated dilution of the oxidizing agent, preferably via the recirculation of the cathode exhaust gas. If this is not necessary, since in individual operating states a corresponding limitation of the potentials due to the power demanded by the stack 1 takes place anyway, the amount of recirculated cathode exhaust gas can be regulated in a manner relevant to humidification in a manner known from DE 102 46 168 A1.
