Journal of Electromagnetic Analysis and Applications, 4:187-191.] represents a valued optical absorber material that can be used as a thin film in optical sensors.
In microelectronics, contact with water can cause damage to various structures. Therefore, when producing porous, thin precious metal black layers, the use of a water-free production process is often advantageous. Accordingly, in situ electrodeposition of optical absorbers, e.g. on the constituent microcomponents of optical sensors, in particular on metallic heterostructures in non-aqueous media, is of practical interest.
Minuten erreichen. The ex-situ production of optical absorber layers has the advantage that no conductive substrates are required. However, this approach encounters obstacles in achieving high homogeneity and highly localized adhesion of the optical absorber layers. In contrast to the time-consuming application that is necessary in this case, an electrochemical in-situ method can also achieve a large layer thickness homogeneity and a precise localization of the electrolytically composed metal in just a few seconds or minutes.
Gegenwärtig basieren optische Absorber, die im Wellenlängenbereich von 0,4 µm bis 20 µm verwendet werden, z.B. auf Silberschwarz [siehe die Publikationen Paussa, L., Guzman, L., Marin, E., Isomaki, N., Fedrizzi, L. 2011 Protection of silver surfaces against tarnishing by means of alumina/titania-nanolayers. Phys. 42: 135411.].Currently, optical absorbers used in the wavelength range from 0.4 µm to 20 µm are based, for example, on silver black [see the publications Paussa, L., Guzman, L., Marin, E., Isomaki, N., Fedrizzi, L. 2011 Protection of silver surfaces against tarnishing by means of alumina/titania nanolayers. Silberschwarz zeigt jedoch eine unerwünschte chemische Reaktivität gegenüber Luftkomponenten [siehe die Publikationen Paussa, L., Guzman, L., Marin, E., Isomaki, N., Fedrizzi, L. 2011 Protection of silver surfaces against tarnishing by means of alumina/titaniananolayers. Phys. However, silver-black shows an undesirable chemical reactivity towards air components [see the publications Paussa, L., Guzman L, Marin E, Isomaki N, Fedrizzi L 2011 Protection of silver surfaces against tarnishing by means of alumina/titanium nanolayers. Gesellsch. zu Berlin 14:56]The electrochemical deposition of platinum black adhering to platinum cathodes in aqueous electrolytes of chloroplatinic acid by adding copper or lead salts was described in 1895 [Kurlbaum, F., Lummer, O. 1895 "About the new platinum light unit of the Physical-Technical Reichsanstalt", Negotiations of Physics. society to Berlin 2:56 p.m.]
Later, Kohlrausch described platinum electrodes with high current densities [Kohlrausch, F. 1897 About platinated electrodes and resistance determination Annalen der Physik (296), 315-332] from an aqueous solution of PtCl 4 in the presence of lead acetate. He proposed that this occurs in a two-step process, in which hydrogen is first formed and then hydrogen reduces the platinum chloride.
Chemical Reviews 71(2):177-193; Layson, A.R., Columbia, M.R. 1997 The morphology of platinum black electrodeposited on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite studied with scanning electron microscopy and scanning tunnelling microscopy, Microchemical Journal 56(1):103-113].
Furthermore, in aqueous electrolytes of chloroplatinic acid, a four electron reduction in H 2 [PtCl 6 ] acid has been observed under extreme conditions (platinized electrode was previously kept in deoxygenated 1M HCl for two days) [Feltham, AM 1971 Platinized platinum electrode. Chemical Reviews 71(2):177-193; Layson, AR, Columbia, MR 1997 The morphology of platinum black electrodeposited on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite studied with scanning electron microscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy, Microchemical Journal 56(1):103-113].
Feltham and Spiro also studied the nucleation and growth of the porous platinum black on the cathode produced in aqueous media.
1. Vorbereitung des Elektrolyten1. Preparation of the electrolyte
The electrolyte is based on a solution of a precious metal salt in isopropanol, for platinum this is PtCl 4 . The concentration of the salt is usually between 0.05% and 3.00%, but is not limited to this range. An additive is added to this solution and mixed thoroughly.
Pb(CH 3 COO) 2 can be used as an additive in each case. The concentration of the additive usually ranges between 0.001% and 0.050%, but larger or smaller amounts are also possible.
2. Vorbereitung der Kathode (bzw. des Multikathodenträgers)2. Preparation of the cathode (or the multi-cathode carrier)
The cathode or cathodes are defined by the surfaces to be coated. For the sake of better readability, the object of which the cathode is or are an integral part is generally referred to as “the cathode” in the text. It can be freely selected in terms of shape and structure and is usually specified by the application. The prerequisite, however, is that the surfaces to be coated are electrically conductive (e.g. metallic, conductive oxides or polymers), are in direct contact with the electrolyte at the start of coating and can be electrically connected to the power source. The coatability is not limited to surfaces of certain roughness.
3. Vorbereitung der Anode3. Preparation of the anode
The anode is made of precious metal or other conductive material coated with platinum. To ensure a homogeneous field distribution, the anode should be dimensioned in such a way that it protrudes by at least 5% in all directions over the area of the cathode to be coated or the area of the part of the cathode carrier that includes all cathodes. Smaller extensions are also possible, but they reduce the homogeneity of the field, especially in the outer area of the cathode.
The anode can be designed as a plate, wire mesh, cylinder, partial spherical shell or other shape.
4. Ausrichtung der Elektroden und Herstellung der elektrischen Verbindungen4. Align the electrodes and make the electrical connections
The electrodes are fixed accordingly and connected to the power source. The orientation of the electrodes should be chosen in such a way that they fulfill the condition from 3.
5. Einfüllen des Elektrolyten in das Bad5. Filling the electrolyte into the bath
6. Aktivierung der Temperaturregelung6. Activation of the temperature control
The target value of the temperature control is set, the control is activated and the coating is waited until the temperature is stable.
7. Aktivieren des Stromes zur Abscheidung des Edelmetalls7. Activating the current for the deposition of the precious metal
The power source is activated, with the voltage being regulated to the target value during the deposition process.
Termination of the deposition process based on a termination criterion, e.g. the current
The process ends when the termination criterion is reached by interrupting the current flow. The layer thickness achieved via an in-situ layer thickness measurement, the coating duration or the current can be used as a termination criterion.
9. Entnahme der beschichteten Kathoden.9. Removal of the coated cathodes.
10. Wasserfreie Reinigung der Kathode (optional): Waschen und Trocknen10. Anhydrous cleaning of the cathode (optional): washing and drying
The cathode can be cleaned in isopropanol without water, and air or drying gas can be used for subsequent drying.
11. Temperung (optional)11. Tempering (optional)
Depending on the application, a subsequent tempering step can be carried out. In principle, temperatures of 1000°C and above are possible, but the properties of the cathode must be taken into account.

The power source is activated, with the voltage being regulated to the target value during the deposition process. After the desired deposition time of 27 s has been reached, the deposition process is terminated by switching off the power source in order to achieve a layer thickness of approx. 200 nm.
The coated article is removed from the bath, rinsed in isopropanol and dried in a dry nitrogen atmosphere.
The advantages of microelectrodes used in the procedure are:
- • The mass transport to the electrode by diffusion is high even without convection.
- • The diffusion fluxes at the micro-electrodes exceed those obtained by convection at larger electrodes.
- • The microelectrodes provide charge confinement.
- • in µm-precise, mask-free 3D positioning,
- • in the use of pure noble metals in a robust nanostructure,
- • in the chemical and physical stability, so that the structures are permanently stable in humid air,
- • and above all in the fact that the process is water-free and very process-compatible, which enables efficient transfer into industrial manufacturing processes.
All the features presented in the description, the exemplary embodiments and the following claims can be essential to the invention both individually and in any combination with one another.
