Description
The invention relates to a method for compensating defective printing nozzles of an inkjet printing machine, taking into account the resulting surface density in the area of adjacent printing nozzles.
The invention is in the technical field of inkjet printing.
In inkjet printing, the resulting print result depends very much on the status and performance of the inkjet print heads involved in the individual printing units or the print nozzles of the inkjet print heads concerned. It very often happens that individual printing nozzles either deviate from the position of their intended printing point and / or do not print with the actually desired volume of ink. In extreme cases, this can lead to the complete failure of a single pressure nozzle. Such errors in the behavior of individual printing nozzles lead to corresponding disturbances in the print image to be generated. Completely failed or almost completely failed print nozzles produce so-called "white lines", especially in a full-tone area, since the substrate underneath shines through at the point where they should actually be printing. In the case of printing nozzles that print differently, a so-called “dark line” usually arises in addition to the “white line”, since the printing at an angle, printing the area on the printing substrate where it shouldn't be printing at all and where usually neighboring printing nozzles already apply ink according to plan. Due to the additional ink entry of the squirting spray nozzle, the so-called “dark line” occurs. Since pressure nozzles spraying at an angle in particular are difficult to predict in terms of their behavior, they are usually simply and simply deactivated together with pressure nozzles which print less and which change in their pressure strength unpredictably. The resulting "white lines" are compensated for together with the "white lines" caused by completely failed pressure nozzles. There are various types of compensation for this in the prior art.
If a nozzle fails or is switched off, the resulting "white line" can e.g. can be compensated for by the directly adjacent pressure nozzles. For this purpose, the direct neighbors are strengthened, the pressure nozzles after the next are weakened (dilution), which ideally closes the gap and there is no longer a fault visible. The selected parameters such as compensation strength and dilution strength are determined via test patterns, they are dependent on the area and substrate and are used across the board, irrespective of the local values of the area density in the vicinity of the nozzle to be compensated, the only decisive factor is the value at the location of the nozzle to be compensated The result obtained in this way is good in a homogeneous surface, the parameters lead to a visually acceptable result.
However, it is known that both the behavior of the jetted ink, the bleeding under the influence of coalescence, and the visual perception depend on what is printed in the vicinity of the nozzle to be compensated. Is e.g. If there is an edge with a higher density at a distance of 3 pixels across the defective nozzle, using the standard compensation and dilution parameters the edge profile is significantly changed, the density profile in the area in front of the edge increases, the area becomes too dark.
The object of the present invention is therefore to disclose a method for compensating defective pressure nozzles by adjacent pressure nozzles, which achieves a better compensation result than the methods known from the prior art.
This object is achieved by a method for compensating for defective printing nozzles in an inkjet printing machine by means of a computer, the computer for compensating the defective printing nozzles directly increasing the volume of the ink drops Adjacent printing nozzles and additionally a reduced ink drop volume of the next but one neighboring printing nozzles are calculated and these printing nozzles are then controlled accordingly, which is characterized in that the computer carries out the calculation of the enlarged and reduced ink drop volumes depending on the image content with regard to the area density in the area of the adjacent printing nozzles. The most important criterion when carrying out the method according to the invention is the consideration of the surface density in the pressure range of the adjacent pressure nozzles involved in the compensation. It is not so much based on the actual ink drop volume, but rather on the resulting area coverage value in the area of the adjacent pressure nozzles. And this is not only dependent on the pure ink volume, but also on additional parameters, such as the selected substrate and the relevant color separation. If, for example, there is a dark edge in the area of the adjacent pressure nozzles, ie an edge with a higher surface density, it is clear that the compensation must be reduced somewhat more at this point, otherwise an overcompensation with the result of a "dark line" could occur. A classic example of such a case is a barcode.
Advantageous and therefore preferred developments of the method result from the associated subclaims and from the description with the associated drawings.
A preferred development of the method according to the invention is that if a positive edge occurs in the areal density of the image content in the area of the adjacent print nozzles, the computer reduces the ink drop volumes of the adjacent but one or two adjacent print nozzles, while if there is a negative edge in the areal density the ink drop volumes of the the next but one, neighboring pressure nozzles reduced in size. In order to prevent a “dark line” when a positive edge occurs in the area of the adjacent pressure nozzles, according to the method according to the invention, the dilution, ie the reduction in the ink drop volume of the next but one neighboring pressure nozzles, which is normally intended to avoid overcompensation, reduced even further. A weakening of the compensation strength of the directly adjacent pressure nozzles, which is to compensate for the defective pressure nozzle with an increased ink drop volume, is less suitable, since this would otherwise have a direct influence on the effectiveness of the compensation of the defective pressure nozzle. The exact opposite behavior would be required if a negative edge occurred. A negative edge means that the area density in the neighboring area is significantly lower than in the area of the compensation of the defective pressure nozzle.
A further preferred development of the method according to the invention is that the computer includes the distance from the edge to the next but one, adjacent printing nozzles, the effect of the greater or lesser reduction of ink drop volumes of the respective next but one next, neighboring printing nozzles being weakened, the greater the distance of the Edge is. It goes without saying that the closer an edge is to the relevant pressure nozzles responsible for dilution, the greater the influence of an edge in the area of adjacent pressure nozzles. It is not decisive for the method according to the invention whether the transition from amplification or reduction of the dilution of the next but one pressure nozzle with respect to the distance of the edge to the next but one pressure nozzle is smooth or stops abruptly from a certain distance. Usually you choose the procedure that brings the better results for the current printing process.
A further preferred development of the method according to the invention is that when the distance between the computers is less than three pixels, the enlargement of the ink drop volumes of the directly adjacent printing nozzles is correspondingly reduced or increased. As already explained, the effect according to the invention on dilution increases the closer the edge is to the next but one neighboring pressure nozzles responsible for dilution. Is the edge e.g. more than three pixels away, the number of the next but one print nozzle, which is responsible for the dilution, can be increased. This enables more precise control. However, if the edge is only two or even fewer pixels, i.e. less than three, away, in addition to the compensation for the defective pressure nozzle, dilution is no longer possible because the edge is too close. In this special case, the compensation strength must then be reduced accordingly in order to be able to achieve an effect at all. In the case of a negative edge, the compensation of the directly adjacent pressure nozzles would of course be increased accordingly.
A further preferred development of the method according to the invention is that when a positive or negative peak occurs in the areal density of the image content in the area of the adjacent printing nozzles, the computer applies the same principle, but with a reduced degree of modification, the degree of reduction being the width depends on the peak. In addition to an edge, which describes a transition from a low to a higher surface density or vice versa, and in which the subsequent corresponding higher or lower surface density also over one further adjacent area, it is also possible that so-called peaks occur in the area of adjacent pressure nozzles. Here, the increase or decrease in the adjacent area density is very limited. The method according to the invention can also be used for such peaks in the areal density of the image content in the area of the adjacent printing nozzles. However, it must be taken into account here that such peaks have a significantly smaller influence on the compensation result than a complete edge. Accordingly, the degree of the strength of the modification with which intervention is carried out according to the invention must also be reduced. This means that in the case of a positive peak, which could lead to overcompensation, the dilution of the next but one neighboring pressure nozzles would have to be amplified correspondingly less than in the case of an edge. In the case of a negative peak, vice versa.
A further preferred development of the method according to the invention is that, in order to calculate the enlarged and reduced ink drop volumes of the adjacent printing nozzles, printed test patterns, which cover all essential combinations of the image content with respect to the area density, such as distance and / or thickness of edge or peak, by means of at least captured by an image sensor, digitized and evaluated by the computer. In order to know how strong the effects of adjacent edges and / or peaks are and thus to determine the degree of modification that are necessary in the method according to the invention, a series of test patterns is usually printed, which conceivable combinations that can occur in the real printing process , cover. In addition to the combinations of the image content, other process parameters such as the substrate and / or the inks used are included in these tests.
A further preferred development of the method according to the invention is that at least one test pattern is printed for each process color used in the inkjet printing machine. With regard to the ink used, the process color used naturally plays a major role. So it is e.g. logical that e.g. the process color yellow generally requires less correction than the e.g. the process color black. Of course, this must also be taken into account when calculating the modifications according to the invention.
A further preferred development of the method according to the invention is that the computer creates and uses a calculation model for calculating the enlarged and reduced ink drop volumes of the adjacent pressure nozzles, which provides the effects of inhomogeneous image contents on the area coverage and the visual appearance when compensating for a defective pressure nozzle. As an alternative to carrying out test prints to calculate the enlarged and reduced ink drop volumes of neighboring and the next but one neighboring printing nozzles, a calculation model can also be created and used which includes such effects of inhomogeneous image contents, e.g. Edges and peaks. This has the advantage that the effort required for printing and evaluating the test samples can be avoided.
A further preferred development of the method according to the invention is that when the defective pressure nozzles are compensated for in the rastered print image, the computer carries out the target and actual area density in the area of the adjacent pressure nozzles by averaging in the printing direction in combination with correspondingly designed sliding window functions. This procedure is particularly advantageous if the compensations are to be carried out in the color separation that has already been screened. However, even in the case of compensation, it makes sense to carry out corresponding averaging processes even in the gray-scale image, since the modified ink components of the compensation and dilution printing nozzles adjacent to the side are partially stochastically distributed in the printing direction. This can suppress noise.
A further preferred development of the method according to the invention is that, in addition to taking account of the image content with regard to the areal density of the computers, the change in the image content which arises from the compensation of defective pressure nozzles themselves and from the compensation of density fluctuations of the pressure nozzles is also taken into account. This enables the influence of inhomogeneous neighboring image content to be taken into account even more precisely. Because, of course, the compensation process also has a corresponding influence due to the increased ink drop volume of the adjacent pressure nozzles and the reduced ink drop volume of the next but one adjacent print nozzle. The compensation of density fluctuations of individual printing nozzles that is customary in inkjet printing naturally also has a certain influence at this point and can also be taken into account.
