Description
The invention relates to a solid-state battery, in particular a protective layer for its lithium metal anode, a solid-state battery preliminary product and a method for producing a solid-state battery.
With the help of lithium metal anodes, the energy density of a battery can be increased significantly. When a battery with such an anode is discharged, the lithium is by no means deposited as a smooth layer on the anode. Rather, the steadily increasing active surface area of the anode creates pointed dendrites, which can pierce through a separator that may be present and, in the worst case, reach a cathode of the solid-state battery, which leads to an electrical short circuit of the battery. Local overheating and the risk of explosion of the battery are possible consequences of dendrite formation.
Due to the high electrochemical negativity of Li + / Li, the solid electrolyte of solid-state batteries can also be reduced on contact with the lithium metal anode. The decomposed solid electrolyte forms an intermediate layer / phase (solid electrolyte interphase, SEI) at an interface between the anode and the solid electrolyte, which usually has a low lithium-ion conductivity, which leads to a very high interface resistance. At the same time, however, the intermediate layer / phase is conductive to electrons, which favors a progressive decomposition of the solid electrolyte.
It is also known to insert a thin layer of polymer electrolyte (e.g. PEO / LiTFSI) between the lithium metal anode and the solid electrolyte to prevent direct contact between the two. However, polymer-based solid electrolytes only show sufficient lithium-ion conductivity at a temperature above approx. 60 ° C and must be applied extremely thinly. Accordingly, use at room temperature severely limits battery operation. In addition, dendrite growth cannot be prevented by such a polymer material at high current densities.
It is also known to use a solid electrolyte which forms decomposition products on degradation due to contact with the anode, which are lithium ion conductive and block electrons, similar to an SEI in lithium ion batteries. However, such solid electrolytes that form an SEI-like layer are still susceptible to dendrite growth, since grain boundaries are already present or are more pronounced due to the decomposition reaction. In addition, the decomposition products usually show poorer ion conductivity than the electrolyte material itself, so that the internal resistance of the cell / battery increases.
The object of the present invention is to provide a solid-state battery, a solid-state battery preliminary product and a method for producing a solid-state battery in order to at least partially overcome the disadvantages mentioned above.
This object is achieved by the solid-state battery according to claim 1, the solid-state battery pre-product according to
Further advantageous refinements of the invention result from the subclaims and the following description of preferred exemplary embodiments of the present invention.
A first aspect of the disclosure relates to a solid-state battery which has a solid electrolyte which is arranged between a lithium metal anode and a cathode of the solid-state battery. Furthermore, the solid-state battery has a protective layer which is arranged between the solid electrolyte and the anode and consists of a Li 2 O matrix is trained. The protective layer or the Li 2 O matrix has nanoparticles, in particular nanocrystals, which contain a metal and / or an alloy of the metal and lithium. The nanoparticles are distributed in the Li 2 O matrix. An alloy, in particular reversibly, can thus be formed from the metal or the nanoparticles and lithium.
In particular, it is possible for the nanoparticles (in the protective layer) to consist of the metal and / or of the alloy of the metal and lithium. However, it can be seen that impurities can also be present in these nanoparticles. The contamination can occur for various reasons, for example due to the manufacturing process.
The term “lithium metal anode” means that the active material of the anode is formed from lithium metal, or in other words, from metallic lithium.
When the solid-state battery is charged, lithium ions get from the cathode (de-lithiation) to the anode and are stored there (lithiation). By charging, ie during an electrochemical lithiation / deposition of lithium on / in the anode, the metal, which is present in the form of nanoparticles in the Li 2 O matrix, reacts with the deposited lithium to form the metal-lithium alloy. This is then also in the form of nanoparticles in the Li 2 O matrix. This alloy formation is reversed during unloading. It goes without saying that the formation of the metal-lithium alloy and its reversal do not proceed suddenly, but continuously. For this reason, it can sometimes occur during charging and discharging that the protective layer has both the metal nanoparticles and the metal-lithium alloy nanoparticles.
The protective layer prevents direct contact between the anode and the solid electrolyte and thus a reduction of the solid electrolyte (here “reduction” means a reducing reaction in the chemical sense). This prevents an (usually observed) intermediate phase of decomposed solid electrolyte from forming on the anode, which would cause an increased interfacial resistance.
The, in particular homogeneous, Li 2 O matrix acts as a buffer which at least partially compensates for a volume expansion of the nanoparticles during the formation of the alloy of the metal nanoparticles to form a metal-lithium alloy. Mechanical stress on the anode during a discharge process of the solid-state battery can thus be reduced. Volume expansion by lithium deposition at the anode is also at least partially compensated for.
Furthermore, a lithium metal alloy formed by an electrochemical reaction and embedded as a nanoparticle in the Li 2 O matrix also offers a sufficiently high lithium and electron conductivity for operating the solid-state battery at high rates even at room temperature. So high charging and discharging currents are possible.
Furthermore, the nanoparticles can be homogeneously distributed in the Li 2 O matrix. A local volume expansion of the nanoparticles within the Li 2 O matrix is thereby avoided. This improves their buffer function. It has been shown that a homogeneous distribution of the nanoparticles also enables a homogeneous deposition of lithium on the anode during a charging process of the solid-state battery. The protective layer thus prevents not only degradation of the solid electrolyte, but also dendrite formation at the anode.
In other embodiments, the reversible alloy formation from the nanoparticles comprising the metal and lithium can take place when the solid-state battery is being charged. This in-situ generated metal-lithium alloy is both ion and electron conductive, which means that the protective layer has a comparatively low interfacial resistance. Accordingly, the internal resistance of the solid state battery is low.
In certain designs, the lithium metal anode can be designed as a film. In further versions, the protective layer can have a thickness of up to 10 nm. The thickness of the protective layer can preferably be between 5 nm and 10 nm.
Furthermore, the metal that the nanoparticles have can be tin. The alloy formed from the tin nanoparticles and lithium has a particularly good ionic conductivity and, accordingly, the protective layer formed therefrom. Alternatively, the metal can be aluminum, bismuth, indium, magnesium or zinc. In an alloy with lithium, these materials have a lower ionic conductivity (in comparison to tin-lithium alloys).
A second aspect of the disclosure forms a solid-state battery intermediate product for producing a solid-state battery with the features described above. The solid-state battery preliminary product has a solid electrolyte and a layer which is formed / formed from a metal oxide containing lithium.
There are designs in which the lithium-containing metal oxide from which the layer is formed is Li 2 SnO 3 . Alternatively, an aluminum, bismuth, indium, magnesium or zinc-containing metal oxide can be used.
- - Bereitstellen eines Festelektrolyten;
- - Aufbringen einer Schicht aus einem Lithium enthaltenden Metalloxid an den Festelektrolyten, wobei eine Legierung aus dem Metall und Lithium formbar ist;
- - Aufbringen einer Lithium-Metall-Anode auf die Schicht, so dass die Schicht zwischen dem Festelektrolyten und der Lithium-Metall-Anode angeordnet ist;
- - Providing a solid electrolyte;
- Applying a layer of a lithium-containing metal oxide to the solid electrolyte, an alloy of the metal and lithium being formable;
- Applying a lithium metal anode to the layer so that the layer is arranged between the solid electrolyte and the lithium metal anode;
- Applying a cathode to a side of the solid electrolyte opposite the lithium metal anode; and
- - Charging the solid state battery.
When the solid-state battery is charged, a two-stage formation process takes place within the layer which is formed from the metal oxide containing lithium. By charging this layer, in particular the metal oxide containing lithium, first reacts to the metal and Li 2 O, the metal then being present in the form of nanoparticles in a Li 2 O matrix. The resulting nanoparticles are homogeneously distributed in the Li 2 O matrix. The metal nanoparticles then form a metal-lithium alloy when they are further lithiated with lithium ions. The properties and effects of the metal nanoparticles and the metal lithium have already been described above.
Furthermore, the layer comprising the lithium-containing metal oxide can be applied by one of the methods of rotary coating, laser beam vapor deposition, sputtering or atomic layer deposition.
The terms "anode" and "cathode" used here to refer to battery components refer to the function of these components during a battery discharge process. Accordingly, the “anode” is the electrode on which a reduction takes place and the “cathode” is the electrode on which an oxidation takes place. It is understood that in the case of rechargeable batteries, the anode of the discharge process becomes the cathode of the charge process, and accordingly the cathode of the discharge process becomes the anode of the charge process.

Battery forms are possible in which one of the electrodes is designed as a cylindrical core, which is correspondingly surrounded by a tubular solid electrolyte, by a tubular protective layer and by the tubular other electrode, so that the electrodes, the solid electrolyte and the (between an anode and the protective layer arranged coaxially. Measures for increasing the surface area of the electrodes and the solid electrolyte are also possible, e.g. by providing heights and corresponding depressions on their surfaces.
