The invention relates to a battery cell comprising at least one electrode stack (12a, 12b, 12c, 12d) and at least one compensation element (14a, 14b, 14c, 14d, 14e, 14f), wherein the compensation element (14a, 14b, 14c, 14d, 14e , 14f) between the at least one electrode stack (12a, 12b, 12c, 12d) and a housing (16) of the battery cell (10) or a second electrode stack (12a, 12b, 12c, 12d) is introduced, wherein the compensation element (14a, 14b, 14c, 14d, 14e, 14f) is configured such that a thickness of the compensating element (14a, 14b, 14c, 14d, 14e, 14f) depends on a state of charge of the battery cell (10) and / or an aging state of the battery cell ( 10) is set.
Description
The present invention relates to a battery cell, a battery module, a method and an apparatus for operating the same according to the preamble of the independent claims.
Stand der TechnikState of the art
It is known that under certain circumstances the foam keeps the battery cells in operation at their place of construction. An increasing dimensioning of the foam leads to a decreasing volume efficiency.
Offenbarung der ErfindungDisclosure of the invention
The invention is based on a battery cell with at least one electrode stack and at least one compensation element. The battery cell may be, for example, a lithium-ion battery cell. The battery cell is enclosed by a housing, which may be formed as a hard or soft shell.
According to the invention, it is provided that the compensation element is introduced between the at least one electrode stack and a housing or a second electrode stack, wherein a thickness of the compensation element is dependent on a state of charge of the battery cell. The state of charge can be quantitatively characterized by an English term "State of charge (SOC)". The SOC value covers a value range of 0% to 100%. For example, the thickness of the compensating element is maximum when the SOC value is 0%. Furthermore, it is advantageous if the thickness of the compensating element is dependent on an aging state of the electrode stacks. The maximum state of aging is also referred to as "End of Life (EOL)". The thickness of the compensating element is, for example, minimal when the battery cell reaches the state of "EoL". Preferably, the expansion of a battery cell caused by the aging process is compensated by the compensation element. A thickness of the compensating element is understood to mean an extent of the compensating element in a stacking direction of an electrode stack. The advantage of the invention is to provide a functional and reliable compensation element against swelling processes of battery cells as a function of their operating state or aging state for a battery cell.
Weitere vorteilhafte Ausführungsformen der Erfindung sind Gegenstand der Unteransprüche.Further advantageous embodiments of the invention are the subject of the dependent claims.
If the compensating element has an elastic material, the compensating element can be deformed as desired. The elastic material may be, e.g. an elastomer, in particular rubber. The expansion, which occurs periodically during a charging process and with increasing aging of a battery cell, can be effectively compensated by such a compensation element. This prevents wear or damage to the electrode stack during transport or during operation. Furthermore, the aging behavior of the cell can be favorably influenced by an optimized pressure.
It is for example provided that the compensation element is acted upon in the form of a hollow body with a cooling medium. The cooling medium may e.g. in the form of a liquid or a gas, preferably a liquid. As a result, an effective and very fast cooling of the battery cell is made possible in an advantageous manner. Thus, the battery cell is effectively protected against overheating of the electrode stack in the operating state.
It is provided according to a further aspect of the invention that a battery module is formed from at least two battery cells and at least one compensation element, which is introduced between the at least one battery cell and a housing of the battery module or the second battery cell. The compensating element is designed such that a thickness of the compensating element is dependent on a state of charge of the battery cells. Further, it is advantageous if the thickness of the compensation element is dependent on an aging state of the battery cells. The compensating element may preferably fix the battery cells at their places of construction during a transport or an operating state. It is conceivable that the compensating element provided in a battery module is designed analogously to the compensating element described above in at least one battery cell. The battery cells in the battery module can accordingly be designed with or without compensation element.
The present invention also relates to a method which serves to operate the battery cell according to the invention. During the method, a state of charge of the battery cell is determined and a thickness of the compensation element is set by the determined state of charge. However, it is also conceivable that an aging state of the battery cell is determined and the thickness of the compensating element is adjusted depending on the determined aging state. The state of charge can be determined, for example, by a plurality of pressure sensors, which are preferably introduced between the at least one electrode stack and the compensation element or a housing. If the battery according to the invention has an SOC value before the start of a charging process of 0%, the compensating element can be filled with a cooling fluid, for example. As a result, the thickness of the compensating element in the stacking direction of the electrode stacks can be maximum. When the electrode stack (s) expand during charging, a compressive force generated by the expansion is applied to the pressure sensors. As a result, the pressure sensors are activated, for example. Preferably, the pressure sensors may be electrically connected to an externally connected device, in particular an electronic control device, which is further in contact with a pump. Advantageously, a filling or a suction of the cooling liquid in the compensating element can be controlled by the pump, so that the thickness of the compensating element can be varied by the pump. In addition, it is provided that the thickness of the compensating element is dependent on an aging state of the compensating element. The expansion of the electrode stacks in an aging process can thus be effectively compensated by the suction of the cooling liquid in the compensation element.
Furthermore, the present invention relates to a use of the battery cell according to the invention or of the battery module according to the invention in an electric vehicle, in a hybrid vehicle or in a plug-in hybrid vehicle.
