Description
The invention relates to a method for adapting the capacitance of an electrochemical energy store, in particular a lithium-ion battery, a motor vehicle, with at least two series-connected memory cells, each comprising a reference electrode.
Motor vehicles, in particular passenger cars, can be driven electrically by means of an electric machine. For the power supply of the electric machine is often a so-called traction battery is used, which is usually designed as an electrochemical energy storage. This energy store is often constructed from a plurality of memory modules, which in turn may itself be constructed from individual memory cells. In this case, the most common memory cell used is a so-called lithium-ion memory cell in which electrical energy in the form of lithium ions is chemically storable. Such a lithium-ion storage cell usually consists of a graphite anode, a lithium-nickel-manganese-cobalt oxide cathode and an electrolyte-impregnated separator. These components are welded depending on the design under vacuum, for example in a so-called "pouch bag" or a steel housing. The separator separates one electrode of the memory cell from another electrode of the memory cell. The smallest unit of a lithium-ion storage cell is a galvanic cell. In this case, the lithium-ion storage cell itself may comprise only one galvanic cell or may already be composed of a plurality of galvanic cells to be considered as unit cells.
The cell voltage between anode and cathode varies depending on the state of charge. In the discharge state, this is about 3 volts, which corresponds to the size of the discharge end voltage. In the charged state, voltages between anode and cathode of approximately up to 4.2 volts can be achieved. The cell voltage results from the position of the respective half-cell voltages of the individual electrodes, ie the anode and the cathode, which in turn are measurable against a reference electrode. Thus, the total voltage of the cell U cell = U cathode -U anode . If an anode potential falls below 0 volts during charging compared to Li / Li + , irreversible lithium deposition, the so-called lithium plating, occurs and, associated with this, a capacity loss of the memory cell. Similarly, when exceeding the cathode potential of 4.3 volts compared to Li / Li + to an increased degradation of the electrolyte.
In addition, during the life of the memory cell, a loss of active lithium generally occurs, which also leads to capacitance losses of the memory cell.
As a rule, the memory cells in the electrochemical energy store are connected in series or in series. In this case, the state of charge of the individual memory cells can diverge for example due to different self-discharge, that is, different memory cells have different voltages. This affects the operation of the energy storage, since this effect of different self-discharge restricts the overall system, since the memory cells with the maximum state of charge determines the end of the charging process and the memory cell with the lowest state the end of the discharging process. In a series connection, only all memory cells can be charged or discharged at the same time and it is therefore not possible to adjust the charge states again. For example, there are additional circuits for each memory cell, so-called balancers, in which a respective memory cell is charged according to its capacity.

The object of the present invention is to provide a method by means of which an electrochemical energy store of a motor vehicle can be used particularly advantageously for operating the motor vehicle.
This object is achieved by a method for capacity adjustment of an electrochemical energy storage device of a motor vehicle with the feature of claim 1. Advantageous embodiments of the invention are specified in the dependent claims.
In order to be able to use an electrochemical energy store, in particular a traction battery based on lithium-ion storage cells, of a motor vehicle, in particular a passenger car, particularly advantageously, the method according to the invention serves for the capacity adaptation of the electrochemical energy store, which at least two series-connected memory cells, each comprising a reference electrode. The inventive method comprises several steps. In a first step, a respective cell voltage of the respective memory cell, which is in particular a lithium-ion memory cell, determined. The memory cell may itself be a single galvanic cell or a composite of a plurality of galvanic cells, each having an anode, a cathode and a separator impregnated with an electrolyte. Furthermore, the memory cell in each case comprises a reference electrode which is formed, in particular, from a material which comprises lithium. In this case, the cell voltage, in particular the cell voltage in a respective half-cell advantageously with the reference electrode by, for example, a voltage measurement between the anode and reference electrode or cathode and reference electrode can be determined. Thus, by determining and monitoring the cell voltage, in particular in the form of an anode potential relative to the reference electrode damage to the memory cell can be prevented by the aforementioned lithium plating, which, for example, a particular increase in the life of the electrochemical energy storage can be achieved.
In a second step of the method, a capacitance available in the respective memory cell is derived on the basis of the determined voltage. This is possible, for example, since there is a relationship between the voltage occurring in a memory cell and the available capacity in it, which is limited in particular by the amount of freely available or freely movable lithium ions. In a further step of the method, the interconnection of the respective reference electrode of the respective memory cell with an anode or cathode of the memory cell takes place as a function of the respective available capacitance. Finally, in a last step of the method according to the invention, the respective capacity of the respective memory cell is increased or decreased, which can be realized by the connection and / or application of an electrical voltage.
In other words, the reference electrode makes it possible to change the capacity of a memory cell. Thus, by interconnecting the reference electrode of the respective memory cell with the anode or the cathode, in particular via an external circuit, lithium from the reference electrode into the memory cell in the form of lithium ions flow, so by a larger amount of freely available active lithium existing free charge carriers the capacity increases. On the other hand, through the interconnection, lithium ions can also flow from the memory cell to the reference electrode, which lowers the capacitance of the memory cell. In this case, the interconnection and the increasing or decreasing of the capacitance always takes place on the basis of the particular available capacity of the respective memory cell in comparison to the other memory cells of the energy store.
If, in the case of a discharged energy store, in particular of the traction battery, the capacity of at least one cell with a high charge state is increased and, for example, reduced by at least one cell with a low charge state, the charge states of the cell become the same again during a next charging process. Advantageously, the capacitances of the at least two series-connected memory cells are matched to one another in such a way that, in the case of a next charging process, the two cells can have a similar voltage approximately at the end, as a result of which the electrochemical energy store can be operated particularly advantageously.
In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, the increasing or decreasing of the respective capacity takes place as a function of a state of charge of the energy store. That is, when the battery is charged, for example, and the respective cells have a mutually varying voltage and thus a different capacitance, the capacity of a memory cell is increased with a high state of charge compared with the other memory cells high state of charge, whereas the capacity of a memory cell with is reduced compared to the at least one other memory cell low state of charge. At a low state of charge of the energy storage, the capacity of a memory cell is increased with respect to the other cells low state of charge, whereby this slower, for example, when charging reaches the highest possible voltage. In contrast, when the state of charge of the energy store is low, the capacity of one memory cell is reduced with a high state of charge compared with the at least one other memory cell. This means that the change in the individual capacities depends on the state of charge of the respective memory cell.
In a further advantageous embodiment of the invention, after a charge of the energy storage, a reversal of the capacitance change that took place before the charging is performed and vice versa. In other words, before discharging the energy storage, the capacity of high-state storage cells is increased and decreased by low-state storage cells, so that the charge states of the storage cells are equalized in the next discharge process. In the discharged state, the capacities of the cells are changed exactly opposite, in order to achieve a further alignment during the unloading process. That means the process can be special be carried out advantageously, in particular dynamically, so that the charge states of the respective memory cells can be adapted to each other particularly advantageous.
In a further advantageous embodiment of the invention is provided as a material for respective reference electrode lithium iron phosphate and / or lithium titanate or at least one of the two is used as the electrode material of the reference electrode. By using lithium iron phosphate and / or lithium titanate, lithium ions can be absorbed or emitted particularly advantageously by or from the reference electrode. Both lithium iron phosphate and lithium titanate as electrode materials also show a very small potential change with changes in the state of charge, whereby, for example, in the first step of the method, the voltages can be determined particularly advantageous and they are also chemically stable to an electrolyte.
