Description
The present invention relates to a charge air cooler for an internal combustion engine, in particular for an internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle.
In order to achieve a compromise between fuel consumption and CO 2 emissions on the one hand and engine power on the other hand, today, in particular in the field of motor vehicles supercharged combustion engines are used. As part of the measure known as turbocharging combustion air or charge air is compressed by means of a compressor during the intake phase and subsequently introduced into the cylinder of the engine. The higher charge air density can increase the power and efficiency of the engine. Depending on the configuration of the internal combustion engine, the charge air may be fresh air or a fresh air / exhaust gas mixture.
However, the compression of the charge air initially causes its temperature to increase, which in turn leads to a decrease in the density and thus to a reduced oxygen content. To counteract this effect, nowadays the charge is basically with cooled charge air. To cool the charge air, a charge air cooler is used, which is arranged downstream of the compressor. Basically, a distinction is made between direct and indirect intercooling. In the first type, we charge the charge air in a heat exchanger, which is arranged in the vehicle and is flowed by ambient air and thereby cooled. In the second type, the charge air is cooled in a heat exchanger which is mounted very close to the engine, wherein the temperature reduction is carried out by means of a coolant, which is tempered by means disposed in the front of the vehicle coolant radiator. The indirect charge air cooling offers the advantage of comparatively shorter charge air lines, which can reduce pressure losses during charging. In addition, the compact design of the coolant radiator in comparison to the size of a conventional intercooler makes more space available in the front of the vehicle. A disadvantage can be seen that in the indirect charge air cooling of the intercooler must be arranged as a separate component on the engine block and additional lines for the coolant and the charge air to be cooled must be provided.
The object of the present invention is to provide, starting from the known from the prior art measures for cooling charge air intercooler configuration with a high heat transfer potential.
The object is achieved by a charge air cooler for an internal combustion engine according to claim 1. Advantageous developments emerge from the dependent claims and the accompanying description.
An intercooler for an internal combustion engine is provided in which compressed charge air for the internal combustion engine is cooled by means of a cooling fluid. The intercooler according to the invention is designed as an assembly of similar e.g. formed tubular segments, which forms a charge air cooling line in its entirety. In this case, each tubular segment has integrated cooling, so that during operation of the charge air cooler, the charge air flowing through the charge air cooling duct is cooled by means of the cooling fluid. The cooling fluid may be a liquid coolant, e.g. Water or a water-glycol mixture, or even to ambient air. In general, the segments can preferably be produced by means of an additive manufacturing method, for example by means of a 3D printing method.
In the charge air cooler according to the invention, which can be used in particular for indirect charge air cooling, the cooling of the charge air is not only in the conventional intercooler, which is arranged as a separate component near the engine, for example, over the engine block, and thus, so to speak "punctually", but distributed over the charge air cooling duct. In other words, in the charge air cooler according to the invention, the active cooling (ie targeted cooling of the charge air using the cooling fluid) along the charge air cooling line and thus for example in the conventional sense already in the supply line to the classic intercooler and / or in the line downstream of the classic intercooler, for example in the line section between conventional intercooler and the combustion chamber. Since the segments of the charge air cooling duct have integrated cooling, each of the e.g. tubular segments for cooling performance. The charge air cooler according to the invention with the charge air cooling line can be seen as a replacement for the conventional intercooler, including the associated non-actively cooling lines through which the charge air is transported to and from the conventional charge air cooler away.
In one embodiment of the intercooler according to the invention, this may have an arrangement of identically configured segments which form the intercooler. The segments may, for example, be formed as cylindrical tube pieces or tubular / tube-like segments (hereinafter referred to as tubular segments) which may be of different lengths / widths and / or may have a curvature, this may vary between different tubular segments. For example, lengths and cross-sectional areas of the tubular segments may be different along their longitudinal axis, at least in a partial area. The ends of the tubular segments can have the same dimensions to allow easy merging. The charge air cooling duct may be formed by joining individual tubular segments together, for example by welding or gluing. The charge air cooling line and thus the tubular segments forming this can have an arbitrary basic shape in cross-section and, for example, be round, oval or polygonal. By the term "tubular-like segment" may thus be meant, for example, an elongated tube, which is part of the intercooler and has in its interior structures that promote heat exchange between charge air and cooling fluid.
The arrangement of the tubular segments which form the charge air cooling duct may comprise a contiguous sequential arrangement of the tubular segments. By adjusting the number and / or the length of the charge air cooling duct forming tubular segments, the cooling capacity can be adjusted. In particular, a cooling capacity per unit length of a tubular segment can be determined, that is, the amount of heat that can be transmitted per unit length of the charge air to the cooling fluid in a tubular segment having a certain internal structure. By juxtaposing a certain number of tubular segments results in accordance with a charge air cooling duct with a certain cooling capacity. The intercooler according to the invention can be considered as a modular construction of interconnected autarkic cooling segments.
According to further embodiments of the intercooler, each tubular segment inside a plurality of first channels through which the charge air flows during operation of the intercooler, and a plurality of second channels through which the cooling fluid flows during operation of the intercooler. In the interior of the tubular segments, therefore, there is a structure of first and second channels, in which the contact surface between the first and second channels, at which a heat transfer between the charge air and the cooling fluid takes place, is considerably increased. Typical dimensions of the internal structure, such as the diameters of the first and second channels, may range from a few tenths of a millimeter to a few tens of millimeters. The first and second channels in the interior of a tubular segment can be arranged as desired and, for example, branch or converge. In one embodiment, the first and second channels may be disposed adjacent to one another within a tube-like segment such that when viewed in cross-section perpendicular to the flow axis of the charge air through a tubular segment there is a regular structure, e.g. a honeycomb structure or a checkerboard structure. The first and second channels may then have a hexagonal and a rectangular cross section, respectively. In general, the cross-sectional shape of the first and second channels can have any shape-for example, they can also be round or oval. The first and second channels can in particular be designed such that a high heat transfer can take place between them while simultaneously avoiding or at least minimizing a pressure loss of the charge air flowing through the charge air cooling line.
According to further embodiments of the intercooler according to the invention, the first channels of adjacent tubular segments may be coupled together and analogously, the second channels of adjacent tubular segments may be coupled together. This ensures on the one hand that both the charge air can flow through the charge air cooling line. On the other hand, the cooling fluid can be introduced into the charge air cooling duct at one point of the charge air cooling duct and also flow through the charge air cooling duct. At a further point of the charge air cooling line, the cooling fluid can be led out of the charge air cooling line again. Depending on the number of segments flowed through by the cooling fluid, a certain cooling capacity of the charge air cooler results.
According to further embodiments of the intercooler, this may further comprise a cooling fluid cooler, which is adapted for controlling the cooling fluid and is coupled to the second channels of the tubular segments, that during operation of the intercooler, a circulation of the coolant through the cooling fluid cooler and the second channels of the charge air cooling duct causes becomes. For this purpose, the cooling fluid cooler can be coupled in accordance with the charge air cooling line, so that they form a circuit together with corresponding connecting lines and the cooling fluid cooler.
According to further embodiments of the intercooler, it may further comprise a control unit (eg a suitably arranged circuit) which is arranged to regulate the circulation of the coolant through the cooling fluid radiator and the second channels of the intercooler duct. The control unit can, for example, control a cooling fluid pump such that the charge air at the outlet of the charge air cooler according to the invention has the desired temperature. For this purpose, the flow rate of the cooling fluid can be regulated or even the cooling fluid circulation can be switched on and off completely.
In further an internal combustion engine is provided with a charge air cooler according to various embodiments, wherein the charge air cooler according to the invention or the charge cooling line between an output of a compressor of the internal combustion engine and a combustion chamber of the internal combustion engine is arranged.
