Description
The present invention relates to extended life electrodes, in particular for use in batteries, and to methods for their production.
The importance of modern battery systems is continuously increasing. Both in the field of electric mobility, ie in the field of battery-powered vehicles, such as electric vehicles, e-bikes and hybrid vehicles, as well as in the field of portable devices, such as communication or entertainment devices, high-performance battery systems are needed. The requirements for such battery systems are diverse and, depending on the purpose, quite different. In general, the batteries should provide both high battery power and high battery power. It is also essential that they have the longest possible lifetime, that is, in particular age as slowly as possible, both calendar-wise and cycle-dependent. The use of batteries, especially lithium-ion batteries, leads in the course of time namely to increased cell damage and thus aging. Calendar aging occurs especially in the storage of batteries, especially at high temperatures and / or longer storage times, for example, during the period between battery production and initial use or longer life, especially when not in use without charging and discharging cycles. Over time, capacity and state-of-health (SOH) will decrease. Cell-damaging and thus aging-accelerating processes are, for example, lithium plating, particle cracking or layer thickness increase, in particular an increased formation of solid electrolyte interfaces (SEI) due to increased electrolyte decomposition. Heavy loading of the active material, the electrode structure, during storage and / or charging and discharging, also leads to volume changes, which leads to the destruction of the electrode and capacity loss.
The previously known measures to reduce battery aging as much as possible range from application notes for the use, storage and charging of batteries, to the use of automated battery management systems to the use of improved materials, cell components and cell geometries for even more powerful and durable electrodes and batteries.
However, as before, there is a need for electrodes and batteries which do not have the aforementioned disadvantages, in particular have an increased service life, in particular reduced aging effects.
The present invention is therefore based on the technical problem of providing electrodes and batteries which do not have the aforementioned disadvantages, in particular have an increased service life, in particular reduced aging.
The present invention solves the underlying technical problem by providing the teachings of the independent claims.
In particular, the present invention solves the underlying problem by providing an electrode comprising a coating of coating material applied to a conductive substrate, the coating having at least a first and a spatially separate second coating region having a different composition of the coating material.
The present invention therefore provides for the provision of an electrode comprising a coating of coating material applied to a conductive substrate, this coating having at least two different coating regions which are spatially separated from each other and the compositions of the coating materials present in the two spatially separate coating regions differ from each other. In a particularly preferred embodiment, the at least two different coating regions either adjoin one another directly, that is to say contact directly, in particular are arranged discretely adjacent to one another directly or merge into one another continuously and continuously.
In particular, the present invention is based on the observation that electrodes installed in current battery cells have a uniform composition of the conductive substrate coating material. The opening of aged, in particular cyclized battery cells, has shown that the electrodes have uneven aging phenomena. Thus, there are areas, in particular in stacked pouch cells, in particular lithium-ion cells, in which the aging effects, for example lithium plating, particle cracking and / or layer thickness increase, especially in the area around the current conductors occur. In some battery cells, especially in wound battery cells, the aging preferably occurs in the middle of the electrode coil or especially in the edge regions. As a result, such inhomogeneously aged electrodes can no longer uniformly receive metal ions, for example lithium ions, resulting in a loss of capacity and a reduction in the life of the battery. Surprisingly, the present invention provides a teaching according to which the service life of electrodes, in particular those galvanic cells and batteries having them, can be extended, in particular reduced capacity losses can be achieved. This is achieved in particular in that the electrodes have different compositions of their coating in spatially different regions, as a result of which inhomogeneous local electrode aging is avoided or reduced. According to the invention, an electrode is preferably provided for this purpose which, in the areas in which aging processes, such as layer thickness growth, are increasingly being provided with a different coating material than in areas in which less pronounced aging phenomena are to be expected. It is accordingly possible to apply coating materials adapted to the expected aging processes to the corresponding regions of the electrode so as to take account of the different localization-dependent aging processes. Thus, in areas of the electrode, in which more pronounced aging processes are to be expected in the course of battery use due in particular to a high current load, coating materials are used which have an adapted active material and / or a specific density and / or particle size. According to the invention, it is also possible in particular to use coating materials which have an active material adapted thereto and / or particle size and / or density in regions of the electrode in which less pronounced aging processes are to be expected due to a lower current load.
