Stand der TechnikState of the art
The invention relates to a method for producing an electrode laminate, as well as the electrode laminate obtainable by this method and its use in electrochemical battery cells.
Solid state battery cells, in particular polymer battery cells, represent an important group of electrochemical energy stores. They are characterized by increased safety due to the absence of liquid electrolytes. Usually, the production of such polymer battery cells initially involves the production of positive electrode. For this purpose, an active material slurry comprising at least one active material, a polymer, a lithium salt and optionally further conductive additives is generally provided. Typically, aprotic organic solvents such as acetonitrile or cyclohexanone are used to make the slurry. First, for this purpose, the polymer is dissolved in a mixer in the solvent. Subsequently, the remaining components are added successively and mixed thoroughly with each other to obtain a homogeneous mixture. The mixture is optionally freed from a part of the solvent and applied in the form of a pasty mass to a current collector. Subsequently, the remaining solvent is removed, optionally at elevated temperature, so as to obtain a porous positive electrode (cathode).
In a next step, an electrolyte slurry is usually prepared by dissolving a suitable polymer and conducting salt in a mixer with the addition of a solvent. In general, the same solvent and type of mixer are used here as in the preparation of the active material slurry. The solvent-containing electrolyte slurry is applied to the surface of the positive electrode and then freed from the solvent.
Finally, a negative electrode (anode) is placed on the laminate thus obtained so that the electrolyte layer is located between the positive electrode and the negative electrode.
However, this conventional method has several disadvantages. The individual steps are very time-consuming, since the dissolution of the constituents, in particular of the polymer components, is tedious. In addition, it is necessary for the solvent-containing electrolyte slurry to have not too high viscosity in order to obtain a homogeneous electrolyte layer and to achieve a good bond between the individual layers. In particular, the electrolyte slurry should have a low viscosity in order to penetrate into the pores of the positive electrode and to achieve a perfect connection. Further disadvantages arise from air entrapment and partial dissolution of the positive electrode active material composition by the electrolyte slurry solvent as it is being applied.
These methods known from the prior art require special techniques for the production of the positive electrode, which sometimes require considerable effort. However, you can not ensure that also to the other components of the battery cell, such as the electrolyte and the negative electrode, a stable connection is formed, with a good contact between the individual components of the battery cell.
The present invention is therefore based on the object to provide a method which makes it possible to produce a stable electrode laminate with simple technical methods. This object has been achieved by the invention described below.

An electrode laminate in the sense of this invention is a composite comprising at least one negative electrode, at least one positive electrode and at least one polymer electrolyte layer arranged between the negative and the positive electrode. The composite is a laminate in which the individual superimposed surfaces of the electrodes and the polymer electrolyte layer are firmly joined together. The polymer electrolyte layer is designed such that it prevents a direct electrical contact of the negative electrode with the positive electrode.
A solid-state battery cell in the context of this invention is a solid-state battery cell comprising at least one negative electrode (anode), at least one positive electrode (cathode) and at least one solid electrolyte, in particular a polymer electrolyte, wherein the solid state battery cell is free of constituents, the operating temperature of the solid state battery cell or room temperature are liquid. In particular, the solid state battery cell does not include components that are liquid in a temperature range of 0 ° C to 40 ° C. A solid state battery includes at least one such solid state battery cell. It can also be a variety of solid state battery cells connected together in a solid state battery.
Therefore, in order to guarantee the absence of liquids in the solid state battery cell and to prevent unwanted inclusions of liquids in the solid state battery cell, the proposed method is preferably carried out free of solvents.
In a first method step, a negative electrode is provided. This is made of metal. It may be a substantially pure atomic type metal (e.g., having a purity> 98 at%). Alternatively, it is also possible to use alloys of different metals or multimetallic laminates. For example, in one embodiment, the negative electrode is lithium or a lithium-containing alloy, e.g. As a lithium-bismuth, lithium-copper or lithium-aluminum alloy in the form of a metal sheet or a metal foil formed. The thickness of the metal sheet is in a range of ≤ 1000 microns. Preferably, a metal foil is used with a thickness of ≤ 300 microns, in particular in a range of 5 to 200 microns. In a preferred embodiment, the negative electrode is at least partially made of lithium. This can be realized such that, for example, a substantially pure lithium foil or a substantially pure lithium sheet is used. Alternatively, a metal sheet or foil, e.g. made of copper or aluminum, which is (s) provided on at least one surface with a lithium coating. The layer thickness of the lithium coating in this case is in a range of ≥ 10 nm to ≦ 10 μm, in particular in a range of ≥ 20 nm to ≦ 200 nm. Preferably, however, a substantially pure lithium foil or a pure substantially lithium sheet is used.
The negative electrode has a structuring on at least part of its surface, in particular on a part of a surface consisting of lithium metal, for example in the form of depressions in the surface. The term "depression" in the sense of the present invention is understood in particular as hole-like or lattice-like structures.
Gemäß einer bevorzugten Ausführungsform der Erfindung beträgt der durchschnittliche Durchmesser der Vertiefungen ≥ 1 nm bis ≤ 150 µm.According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, the average diameter of the depressions is ≥ 1 nm to ≦ 150 μm.
In this case, when the recesses comprise a lattice structure or a lattice-like structure, "diameter" means the cross-sectional area-equivalent diameter of the cross-sectional area perpendicular to the direction of the lattice (= diameter of a circular area of the same cross-section).
Bevorzugt beträgt der durchschnittliche Durchmesser der Vertiefungen von ≥ 20 nm bis ≤ 100 µm, stärker bevorzugt ≥ 40 µm bis ≤ 70 µm.Preferably, the average diameter of the pits is from ≥ 20 nm to ≦ 100 μm, more preferably ≥ 40 μm to ≦ 70 μm.
The recesses preferably extend on average to ≦ 50% of the layer thickness of the lithium metal layer. As a result, a good bond between the layers of the electrode laminate can be achieved in most applications without reducing the stability of the negative electrode. The depressions preferably extend on average to ≥ 20% of the layer thickness of the lithium metal layer so as to achieve a sufficiently pronounced structuring of the surface. More pronounced depressions may preferably be realized such that a laminate of a lithium metal layer on a metal foil or a metal sheet of another metal, e.g. Copper or aluminum, is used. These serve as a support structure and can be more structured.
In a preferred embodiment, the recesses have a conical or pyramidal shape, which may optionally also be formed in a plurality of stages. In an alternative embodiment, the depressions are formed in the form of grooves.
Preferably, the average distance between two recesses is greater than or equal to 0.1 times to less than or equal to 5 times the average diameter of the recesses, preferably from greater than or equal to 0.3 times to less than or equal to 3 times , in particular from greater than or equal to 0.5 times to less than or equal to 2 times the average diameter of the recesses, measured from the edge of the respective recess.
Preferably, the area ratio of depressions on the surface of the negative electrode is from ≥ 10% to ≦ 90%. This has proved to be particularly preferred in order to achieve a good connection between the negative electrode and the electrolyte.
Even more preferably, the area ratio of depressions on the surface of the negative electrode is from ≥ 20% to ≦ 80%, and most preferably from ≥ 30% to ≦ 70%.
In a preferred embodiment of the method according to the invention, the negative electrode comprises a lithium foil, which is structured by pressing on a likewise structured mask on at least part of its surface.
The patterning of the surface of the negative electrode can be carried out by any method known to those skilled in the art using a mask suitable for this purpose, for example using a press, a stamp, a textured doctor blade or a structured roller.
In view of the preferred implementation in a continuous manufacturing process, a structured roll is preferably used. This has been found to be particularly useful, since in most applications in the manufacture of the electrodes, a rolling step is already provided and so the electrode of the invention can be prepared by simply replacing the roller.
The tool used has on the surface a negative of the desired target structure of the surface of the patterned negative electrode. This means that the tool has elevations in the form of pyramids, cones, etc. on its surface.
In a further step of the method (method step b)), a polymer electrolyte precursor is applied to at least part of the surface of the negative electrode.
For the purposes of the present invention, the polymer electrolyte precursor is a homogeneous, preferably pulverulent mixture which comprises at least one polymer and one conducting salt which are suitable in combination with one another for the formation of a polymer electrolyte. The polymer electrolyte precursor may be converted to the polymer electrolyte by converting the mixture comprising at least one polymer and at least one conducting salt, without the addition of a solvent, into a continuous phase in the form of a composition. The powder is characterized in that the mean particle size of the constituents of the powder is ≤1 mm.
Polymer electrolytes in the context of this invention are polymer compositions which have ionic conductivity for at least one type of ion. Polymer electrolytes comprise at least one polymer and at least one conducting salt. Suitable polymers include polyalkylene oxides such as polyethylene oxide (PEO) and polypropylene oxide (PPO), polyalkylene oxide copolymers such as polystyrene-polyalkylene oxide copolymers, especially polystyrene-b-polyethylene oxide (SEO), polyacrylates such as poly [2- (2- methoxyethoxyethyl glycidyl ether)] (PMEEGE), Polyphosphazenes, polysiloxanes, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), polyvinylidene fluoride-polyhexafluoropropylene copolymers (PVDF-HFP), polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and styrene-butadiene copolymers (SBR).
In one embodiment, suitable polymer electrolytes include copolymers of alkylene oxides and acrylates, phosphazenes, or siloxanes, with an acrylate, phosphazene, or siloxane polymer chain as the backbone substituted with polyalkylene chains as sidechains. In addition, the polymer electrolyte may also comprise mixtures of the aforementioned polymers.
In a particularly preferred embodiment, the at least one polymer is of polymers based on polyalkylene oxides, in particular polyethylene oxide homopolymer (PEO) and polystyrene-polyethylene oxide block copolymer (SEO) and mixtures thereof.
Furthermore, the polymer electrolyte or the polymer electrolyte precursor comprises at least one conducting salt. This is in particular an alkali metal salt. Particularly preferred are sodium and lithium salts, in particular lithium salts. Suitable examples of such lithium conductive salts include lithium hexafluorophosphate (LiPF 6 ), lithium tetrafluoroborate (LiBF 4 ), LiSbF 6 , LiAsF 6 , Li (CF 3 ) SO 2 NSO 2 (CF 3 ) (LiTFSl), LiClO 4 , lithium bis (oxalato) borate (Li [B (C 2 O 4 ) 2 ], LiBOB) and lithium difluoro (oxalato) borate (Li [BF 2 (C 2 O 4 )], LiDFOB). The conductive salts can be used individually, or in combination with each other. Particular preference is given to using Li (CF 3 ) SO 2 NSO 2 (CF 3 ) (LiTFSI) as conductive salt.
Bevorzugte Ausführungsformen der Erfindung betreffen Polymerelektrolyte bzw. Polymerelektrolytprecursoren, umfassend ein Gemisch aus Polyethylenoxid-Homopolymer (PEO) und Li(CF3)SO2NSO2(CF3) (LiTFSI) oder ein Gemisch aus Polystyrol-Polyethylenoxid-Blockcopolymer (SEO) und Li(CF3)SO2NSO2(CF3) (LiTFSI).Preferred embodiments of the invention relate to polymer electrolytes or polymer electrolyte precursors comprising a mixture of polyethylene oxide homopolymer (PEO) and Li (CF 3 ) SO 2 NSO 2 (CF 3 ) (LiTFSI) or a mixture of polystyrene-polyethylene oxide block copolymer (SEO) and Li (CF 3 ) SO 2 NSO 2 (CF 3 ) (LiTFSI).
Preferably, the at least one conductive salt accounts for at least a proportion of 30 to 70 wt .-%, total weight of the polymer electrolyte.
The polymer electrolyte precursor is applied to at least a portion of the patterned surface of the negative electrode. This can be done by any method known to those skilled in the art, for example, by pouring the polymer electrolyte precursor onto the surface and then knife-coating the preferably powdery mixture to obtain a uniform distribution of the polymer electrolyte precursor.
In a next process step (d), the polymer electrolyte precursor and / or the negative electrode is heated to a temperature above the melting temperature of at least one of the constituents of the polymer electrolyte precursor. As a rule, this is the polymer component of the polymer electrolyte precursor with the lowest melting temperature. This makes it possible for a polymer electrolyte layer to be formed on at least part of the structured surface of the negative electrode by converting the polymer electrolyte precursor into a continuous polymer electrolyte. This penetrates into the recesses on the structured surface of the negative electrode and thus improves the stability and connection between the negative electrode and the electrolyte.
The temperature required for this purpose depends in particular on the particular polymer (s) used. Preferably, temperatures in a range of ≥70 ° C to ≤150 ° C, in particular ≥75 ° C to ≤120 ° C, applied.
In order to obtain as uniform a polymer electrolyte layer on the surface of the negative electrode, it is preferable to heat both the polymer electrolyte precursor and the negative electrode to the required temperature. In a preferred embodiment, in addition, a reduced pressure of ≦ 1 bar, in particular ≦ 0.7 bar, for example in a range of ≥ 0.1 to ≦ 0.5 bar, is applied, so as to reduce the risk of entrapment of gases.
In a preferred embodiment, the softened polymer electrolyte formed from the polymer electrolyte precursor is intensively bound together by pressing on the surface of the negative electrode. This can be done for example with a heated roller or a heated press. With regard to a continuous process control, in particular a heated roller should be mentioned as a preferred embodiment. The applied pressure is for example 1 to 10 bar.
The distance between the heated pressing elements and the amount of material used in Polymerelektrolytprecursor are preferably chosen so that the polymer electrolyte layer has a layer thickness of 1 to 100 .mu.m, preferably 2 to 50 .mu.m, in particular 3 to 10 microns. This layer thickness has proven to be sufficient to effectively separate the electrodes from each other.
The polymer electrolyte layer thus formed not only serves as an electrolyte, but also replaces the separator which is widely used in conventional battery cells. To the formation of dendrites on the surface of the negative To avoid electrode and any short circuits during operation of the solid state battery cell, it may be useful, in particular for thin polymer electrolyte layers to select a polymer electrolyte comprising a polymer having sufficient stability. Preferably, the polymer electrolyte in this case comprises SEO as at least one polymer component.
Optionally, a polymer electrolyte layer may be provided on more than one surface of the negative electrode. This is particularly advantageous if a multiplicity of electrode laminates according to the invention is used in the production of solid-state battery cells or solid-state batteries according to the invention. By an all-round coating of the (also also structured) surfaces of the negative electrode with a polymer electrolyte layer so unwanted contact between two electrodes within the solid state battery cell or solid state battery is prevented.
In a next method step, a positive electrode is provided which comprises at least one current collector and at least one positive active material. The configuration of this positive electrode is not limited and it can be used in principle any known to the expert positive electrode.
The current collector is electrically conductive and is preferably made of a metal, for example aluminum, copper, nickel or alloys of these metals. In one embodiment, the current collector is designed, for example, flat. On at least one surface of the current collector, a layer of a positive active material composition is applied. This comprises at least one positive active material, preferably comprising a lithium-containing metal oxide, a lithium-containing metal sulfite or a lithium-containing metal phosphate, and optionally a binder and / or a conductive additive.
In an embodiment, the positive active material may comprise a composite oxide containing at least one metal selected from the group consisting of cobalt, magnesium, nickel, and lithium.

Li2FeSiO4), Tavoritverbindungen (z.B. LiVPO4F), Li2MnO3, Li1.17Ni0.17Co0.1Mn0.56O2 und Li3V2(PO4)3 als geeignete positive Aktivmaterialien hervorzuheben. An embodiment of the present invention includes, for example, a cathode active material comprising a compound of the formula LiMO 2 wherein M is selected from Co, Ni, Mn or mixtures thereof and mixtures of these with Al. In particular, LiCoO 2 should be mentioned. In a preferred embodiment, the cathode active material is a material comprising nickel, ie LiNi 1 -x M ' x O 2 , where M' is selected from one or more of the elements Co, Mn and Al and 0 ≤ x < 1 is. Examples include lithium nickel cobalt aluminum oxide cathodes (eg, LiNi 0.8 Co 0.15 Al 0.05 O 2 ; NCA) and lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide cathodes (eg, LiNi 0.8 Mn 0.1 Co 0.1 O 2 (NMC (811)), LiNi 0.33 Mn 0.33 Co 0.33 O 2 (NMC (111)), LiNi 0.6 Mn 0.2 Co 0.2 O 2 (NMC (622)), LiNi 0.5 Mn 0.3 Co 0.2 O 2 (NMC (532)) or LiNi 0.4 Mn 0.3 Co 0.3 O 2 (NMC (433)) Furthermore, as preferred positive active materials, mention may be made of overithiated oxides, which are known to the person skilled in the art Examples of these are layer oxides of the general formula n (Li 2 MnO 3 ): 1-n (LiMO 2 ) where M = Co, Ni, Mn, Cr and 0 ≤ n ≤ 1 and spinels of the general formula n (Li 2 MnO 3 ): 1-n (LiM 2 O 4 ) with M = Co, Ni, Mn, Cr and 0 ≤ n ≤ 1. Further, in particular, spinel compounds are Formula LiM x Mn 2 -x O 4 with M = Ni, Co, Cu, Cr, Fe (eg LiMn 2 O 4 , LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 ), olivine compounds of the formula LiMPO 4 with M = Mn, Ni, Co, Cu, Cr, Fe (eg LiFePO 4 , LiMnPO 4 ), silicate compounds of the formula Li 2 MSiO 4 with M = Ni, Co, Cu, Cr, Fe, Mn (eg Li 2 FeSiO 4 ), tavorite compounds (eg LiVPO 4 F), Li 2 MnO 3 , Li 1.17 Ni 0.17 Co 0.1 Mn 0.56 O 2 and Li 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 as suitable positive active materials.
Suitable binders include, for example, styrene-butadiene copolymer (SBR), polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), polytetrafluoroethene (PTFE), polyethylene oxide (PEO), carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), polyacrylic acid (PAA), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and ethylene-propylene-diene. Terpolymer (EPDM) are called. Further, as the binder, the polymers previously used as suitable for the production of the polymer electrolyte can be used.
As Leitzusätze example graphite or Leitruß serve, which increase the electrical conductivity. In addition, lithium salts may be added to increase ionic conductivity. In particular, the abovementioned conductive salts of the polymer electrolyte can be used, preferably in combination with a polymer suitable for the preparation of the polymer electrolyte as binder. These may be the same or different from the material combination used of the polymer electrolyte used. In a preferred embodiment, the at least one polymer of the polymer electrolyte and the binder of the positive electrode, as well as the conductive salt of the polymer electrolyte and the conductive additive of the positive electrode are identical.
The positive electrode is placed on the negative electrode in a next process step (f) such that the polymer electrolyte coating is located between the negative electrode and the positive electrode so as to form an electrode stack.
Although the dimensioning of the negative electrode and the positive electrode as well as the polymer electrolyte layer is not limited, however, they are oriented to each other. Decisive here is that a direct contact between the negative electrode and the positive electrode is to be prevented. The electrodes can therefore be designed differently large, provided that a sufficient size of the polymer electrolyte layer is selected and meets these requirements. In this case, can be dispensed with an additional separator between the electrodes.
In a further method step (g), the electrode stack is pressed together, so as to obtain a stable electrode laminate. If this appears necessary, the method step (g) can also be carried out with heating of the electrode stack, preferably to a temperature above the melting temperature of at least one component of the polymer electrolyte, in particular to a temperature in a range of ≥70 ° C to ≤150 ° C, in particular ≥75 ° C to ≤120 ° C. This process step ideally takes place in the same pressing device as process step d). The heating in process step g) can be omitted, for example, if the sequence of process steps d) to g) takes place so rapidly that the polymer electrolyte in process step g) still has a sufficiently high temperature, so that a solid bond between all constituents of the electrode stack is achieved so as to form the electrode laminate.

Vorteile der ErfindungAdvantages of the invention
The presently described method for producing electrode laminates is capable of providing homogeneous, stable laminates of positive electrode, negative electrode and intermediate electrolyte layer without using a solvent. This not only has ecological and economic advantages, but is also advantageous for safety and health aspects. Finally, the risk of air and / or solvent inclusions in the electrode laminate is significantly reduced, so that the quality of the resulting battery cells can be increased. In addition, the contact between the components of the battery cells is improved and reduces the internal resistance. The electrolyte layer can be made particularly thin. This also benefits the performance of the battery cell.
