Description
The present invention relates to the technical field of controlling fuel injectors. In particular, the present invention relates to a method for driving a fuel injector with idle stroke for an internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle, wherein the fuel injector comprises a solenoid drive with a magnetic coil and a movable armature and a movable nozzle needle. The present invention further relates to a motor controller and a computer program.
When operating direct-operated fuel injectors with solenoid drive (also called Spuleneinspritzinjektoren) with the same control parameter values (in particular current and voltage values) is due to electrical, magnetic and mechanical tolerances to different temporal opening and closing behavior of the individual injectors and thus to variations in the respective injection quantity.
The relative injection quantity differences from injector to injector increase with shorter injection times. So far, these relative differences in quantity were small and without practical significance. The trend towards smaller injection quantities and injection times, however, means that the influence of the relative quantity differences can no longer be disregarded.
For operation, the injectors are subjected to a specific voltage or current profile which usually begins with a boost phase in relation to the opening process. For the so-called hydraulic ballistic operation (in which the fuel injector is not fully opened), the control ends immediately after the boost phase, for the so-called hydraulic static operation (in which the fuel injector is fully opened and held open for a while) at least a first holding phase and optionally also a second holding phase (the actual holding phase) follows or follow.
For hydraulically static operation, especially at high nominal operating pressures of z. B. 500 bar, injector concepts with idle stroke have proved advantageous. The required electrical energy, the electric boost current, can in principle be made smaller, since the beginning of the hydraulic opening is driven not only by the applied magnetic force, but additionally by the armature pulse.
If such a fuel injector with idle stroke is now used in hydraulic ballistic operation, it may happen that the injection of fuel, by the opening is driven only by the armature pulse and the magnetic force generating power is already turned off. The injection quantities are in this case, according to experience, a higher dispersion, which is probably due to the lack of magnetic force and associated stability.

The present invention has for its object to provide an improved control for the hydraulic ballistic operation of Leerhubinjektoren, which can reduce or minimize in particular the above-mentioned scattering problems.
This object is solved by the subject matters of the independent claims. Advantageous embodiments of the present invention are described in the dependent claims.
According to a first aspect of the invention, a method is described for activating a fuel injector having a solenoid drive and a nozzle needle for an internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle, wherein the solenoid drive has a magnet coil and a movable armature and wherein the fuel injector has a free stroke between the armature and the nozzle needle. The described method comprises applying to the solenoid drive a voltage pulse having a predetermined voltage during a boost phase until the current of the current flowing through the solenoid reaches a predetermined peak value, the predetermined voltage being selected so that the current flowing through the solenoid coil Stromes reaches the predetermined peak after the movable armature has overcome the idle stroke and is in mechanical contact with the nozzle needle, wherein the predetermined peak value is selected so that the nozzle needle performs a ballistic movement, and wherein the predetermined voltage in dependence on the predetermined Peak value of the current is selected. The method described is based on the finding that the scattering of the injection quantities explained in the introduction with fuel injectors with idle stroke is considerably reduced or counteracted by ensuring that the current in the solenoid coil is not switched off until the armature has overcome the idle stroke and thus in mechanical contact with the nozzle needle. In other words, the situation described above is avoided, in which the movement of the nozzle needle only by the armature pulse, that is, without magnetic force.
In this document, "boost phase" means, in particular, a phase of driving a fuel injector in which a predetermined voltage is applied to the fuel injector to first move the armature of the solenoid drive and then (after the armature has overcome the idle stroke) also to move the nozzle needle to open the fuel injector. The boost phase is terminated by the current strength of the current flowing through the magnetic coil reaches a predetermined peak value (also called peak current).
According to the invention, the predetermined voltage (boost voltage) of the voltage pulse is selected so that the boost phase lasts at least so long that the predetermined value of the coil current is only reached after the armature has overcome the idle stroke and has come into mechanical contact with the nozzle needle. In other words, the boost voltage is chosen so that the rise of the coil current is kept so low that the predetermined value of the coil current is reached only after the beginning of the movement of the nozzle needle. The timing at which the movement of the nozzle needle begins is also referred to as OPP1.
The prior art typically uses a boost voltage of about 65V. In the present invention, in many cases (depending on the circumstances) a lower boost voltage must be used.
The predetermined peak value is selected so that the nozzle needle performs a ballistic movement. In other words, the predetermined peak value is chosen so low that the nozzle needle follows a parabolic trajectory and does not hit the top (on the pole piece). The fuel injector is thus not fully opened.
The predetermined voltage is selected in response to the predetermined peak value of the current.
The exact relationship between the predetermined voltage and the peak value of the current is determined experimentally and / or by calculation. Since the rate of increase of the current depends directly on the voltage, lower currents generally require lower voltages (and vice versa) to turn off the coil current sufficiently late (after the needle starts to move).
According to a further embodiment of the invention, the predetermined voltage is further selected in dependence on mechanical data of the fuel injector.
In this embodiment also mechanical properties of the fuel injector are taken into account, such as the size of the idle stroke, the spring constant, etc.
According to a further embodiment of the invention, the predetermined voltage is read from a table stored in an engine control unit.
In this embodiment, the selection of the predetermined voltage in a simple manner by spreadsheet (and, where appropriate, interpolation between neighboring values).
In accordance with a second aspect of the invention, an engine control system for a vehicle configured to use a method according to the first aspect and / or one of the above embodiments is described.
This engine control, by using the method according to the first aspect, makes it possible to easily achieve injection rates with very little or no scattering.
According to a third aspect of the invention, a computer program is described which, when executed by a processor, is adapted to perform the method according to the first aspect and / or one of the above embodiments.

In general, the predetermined voltage for the boost phase is selected according to the invention as a function of the predetermined peak value of the current intensity (peak current). At low values of peak current, especially in ballistic operation, a voltage well below the commonly used boost voltage of about 65 V must be used to prevent too rapid a current increase. According to the invention, in addition to the peak current value, further parameter values, such as, for example, the amount of idle stroke, spring constant or other mechanical parameters of the fuel injector, can also be taken into account when selecting the predetermined voltage.
In a preferred embodiment, the relationship between peak current value and voltage to be selected for the boost phase is stored directly in the engine control unit, for example in the form of a table.
