Description
The present invention relates to an electrode material, a battery cell containing these and a method for its production according to the preamble of the independent claims.
Stand der TechnikState of the art
Lithium-ion batteries or lithium-containing batteries are widely used in many daily applications. They are used, for example, in computers such as laptops, mobile phones, smart phones, and other applications. Even with the currently highly advanced electrification of vehicles, such as motor vehicles, such batteries offer advantages. Currently used lithium batteries have about an energy content, which may have limited ranges of, for example, 200 km at reasonable battery weight. A promising variant to enable further improvements are, for example, lithium-sulfur technologies. Known lithium sulfur cells can deliver approximately 350 Wh / kg energy densities, well above conventional cells (approximately 200 Wh / kg).
Currently, however, the lifetime of lithium-sulfur cells may be limited to, for example, 100 full cycles. One reason may be seen in particular in the diffusion of polysulfides away from the cathode and the reaction of these at the lithium metal anode. Improved embodiments of lithium-sulfur cells, in which the sulfur utilization is significantly increased, and in carbonate-based solvents in comparison to conventional Li-S cells, the polysulfide formation is suppressed and thereby the life of the cell is significantly increased, among other things, based on the fact that sulfur is partially covalently bonded to cyclized polyacrylonitrile, or that a polyacrylonitrile-sulfur composite is used as the active material.

Offenbarung der ErfindungDisclosure of the invention
In contrast, an electrode material, a battery cell containing this and a process for its preparation with the characterizing features of the independent claims are provided.
This is based on the fact that according to the invention an electrode material is made available which is suitable in particular for use in lithium-sulfur battery cells and which contains a polyacrylonitrile-sulfur composite material as the electrode active material and is thus designed as a composite electrode active material. According to the invention, particles of the electrode active material are provided with a coating which contains a carbon modification. In this way, the electrical connection of the electrode active material, for example, to a current conductor of a corresponding electrode or the electrical connection or electrical contacting of the polyacrylonitrile-sulfur particles contained in the electrode active material, in particular a sulfur polyacrylonitrile (SPAN) can be significantly improved.
Thus, due to a network of electrical conductive paths, the electrode material according to the invention exhibits a very high electrical conductivity or a lower ohmic resistance than electrode materials which contain an uncoated electrode active material. At the same time, a high diffusibility for lithium ions within the electrode active material is maintained.
In particular, the increased electrical conductivity of the electrode material and an optimized electrical connection of the electrode active material through the coating with a carbon modification improve the rate capability of a battery cell containing the electrode material according to the invention.
Here, as in the following, an electrode active material is understood to mean a constituent of an electrode material on the surface of which electrochemical processes take place which occur during the discharge or absorption of electrical energy during operation of a battery cell containing the electrode material. These may include, for example, lithiation and delithiation processes.
Further advantageous embodiments of the present invention are the subject of the dependent claims.
Thus, it is advantageous if the coating with a carbon modification is reticulated or porous. In this way, direct access of, for example, lithium ions to the polyacrylonitrile-sulfur composite material contained in the electrode active material is possible. This improves the rate capability of such a coated Electrode active material and thus a battery cell containing this on. This is based on the fact that the conductivity of lithium ions in an electrolyte that fills the pores of the coating, tends to be higher than in the coating itself and thus the electrode active material is just as well contacted with lithium-conducting paths.
Weiterhin ist es von Vorteil, wenn die Schichtdicke der Beschichtung mit einer Kohlenstoffmodifikation < 20 nm beträgt, vorzugsweise < 5 nm.Furthermore, it is advantageous if the layer thickness of the coating with a carbon modification is <20 nm, preferably <5 nm.
According to a particularly advantageous embodiment of the present invention, the preparation of the electrode material according to the invention is carried out such that a polyacrylonitrile-sulfur composite material is reacted with a compound which acts as a carbon source and is, for example, citric acid or glucose and in this way a coating of a carbon modification on the Surface of the polyacrylonitrile-sulfur composite material is produced. The use of a suitable carbon source means that the corresponding reaction temperatures can be kept below 200 ° C., for example, and thus can not lead to thermal decomposition or a thermal structural change of the polyacrylonitrile-sulfur composite material which is negative for the electrochemical properties of the battery cell.
The electrode material according to the invention finds use, for example, in corresponding battery cells, in particular in lithium-sulfur battery cells. These in turn find application in mobile applications, for example in mobile devices of telecommunications and portable computers, in vehicles such as electric vehicles, hybrid vehicles or plug-in hybrid vehicles and e-bikes or other electric bicycles, as well as in stationary applications for storing electrical energy, in particular for storing regenerative electrical energy.
