The invention relates to a process for heating an optionally radiation-crosslinkable hot melt adhesive, wherein the hot melt adhesive at least one poly (meth) acrylate, which is at least 50 wt.% Of C1 to C18 alkyl (meth) acrylates formed, a glass transition temperature of less or equal to 10 ° C and the hot melt adhesive may contain a bound to the poly (meth) acrylate or unbound photoinitiator and wherein the hot melt adhesive is irradiated by microwave radiation.

The invention had the object of finding a method to gently and quickly heat even larger amounts of hot melt adhesives, especially UV hot melts and to minimize the risk of unwanted premature crosslinking.
The object is achieved according to the invention by a method for heating a (optionally radiation-crosslinkable) hotmelt adhesive, wherein the hotmelt adhesive contains at least one poly (meth) acrylate which is at least 50% by weight formed from C1- to C18-alkyl (meth) acrylates, wherein the hot melt adhesive may contain at least one photoinitiator and the photoinitiator may be present as an additive not bound to the poly (meth) acrylate and / or the photoinitiator may be copolymerized into the poly (meth) acrylate, and wherein the hot melt adhesive is irradiated by microwave radiation.
It has been found that hotmelt adhesives based on poly (meth) acrylates (in particular UV hotmelts, ie radiation-crosslinkable hot-melt adhesives) can be heated rapidly to temperatures of greater than 100 ° C. by irradiation with microwave radiation, without typical microwave absorbers such as carbon black, metals or others to use polar additives. This is all the more surprising as the poly (meth) acrylates are made up, for the most part, of non-polar monomers, e.g. 2-ethylhexyl acrylate or n-butyl acrylate are formed, which have only a low dipole moment and for a microwave excitation actually molecules with high dipole moment are needed. Therefore, the hotmelt adhesive of the process according to the invention preferably does not contain any non-adhesive, microwave radiation absorbing substances.
The term radiation-crosslinkable means that the hotmelt adhesive contains at least one compound having at least one radiation-sensitive group and that a crosslinking reaction is induced upon irradiation. The irradiation for crosslinking is preferably carried out with actinic radiation, preferably UV light, in particular UV-C radiation.
Hotmelt adhesives, which are also known as hot-melt adhesives, hot-melt adhesives, hot-melt or hotmelt, are solvent-free (ie, not dissolved or dispersed in water or organic solvents) and at room temperature more or less solid products which, when hot, due to the associated reduction in viscosity on an adhesive surface can be applied, and produce the adhesive bond on cooling, while radiation-crosslinkable hot melt adhesives can still be irradiated.
In the following, the term "(meth) acrylic ..." and similar names are sometimes used as a shorthand notation for "acrylic ... or methacrylic ...". In the term Cx-alkyl (meth) acrylate and analogous designations, x denotes the number of C atoms of the alkyl group.
In one embodiment, the hotmelt adhesive is radiation-crosslinkable and contains at least one photoinitiator; the photoinitiator can be present exclusively as an additive which is not bound to the poly (meth) acrylate. In another embodiment, the photoinitiator is present exclusively as component polymerized into the poly (meth) acrylate. But it is also a combination of these two embodiments possible.
Teile Poly(meth)acrylat. For radiation crosslinking, the hot melt adhesive contains a photoinitiator. The photoinitiator is preferably copolymerized in the poly (meth) acrylate. But it can also be unbound and mixed only with the polymer. Typical photoinitiators which may be added to the polymer as an additive are e.g. Acetophenone, benzoin ethers, Benzyldialkylketale or derivatives thereof. The content of the added photoinitiator is preferably 0.05 to 10 parts by weight, more preferably 0.1 to 2 parts by weight, per 100 parts by weight of poly (meth) acrylate.
By irradiation with high-energy light, in particular UV light, the photoinitiator or the photoinitiator group brings about a crosslinking of the polymer and / or the oligomer, preferably by a chemical grafting reaction of the photoinitiator group with a spatially adjacent polymer or oligomer chain. In particular, crosslinking may be accomplished by insertion of a carbonyl group of the photoinitiator into an adjacent C-H bond to form a -C-C-O-H moiety. The wavelength range in which the photoinitiator group can be activated, d. H. in which the main absorption band of the photoinitiator group is, is preferably 200 to 450 nm, more preferably 250 to 350 nm, most preferably 250 to 280 nm.
The hotmelt adhesive preferably contains 0.0001 to 0.1 mol, particularly preferably 0.0002 to 0.1, very particularly preferably 0.0003 to 0.01 mol of the photoinitiator, or the photoinitiator effective, to the polymer and / or to the oligomer-bound molecular group, per 100 g of hot melt adhesive.
The radiation-crosslinkable poly (meth) acrylate may be an adhesive based on a polymer with copolymerized photoinitiator. The poly (meth) acrylate can be prepared by free-radical polymerization of ethylenically unsaturated monomers with copolymerization of at least one radiation-sensitive, radically polymerizable organic compound. Radiation-sensitive, free-radically polymerizable organic compounds are referred to below as a polymerizable photoinitiator. The polymerizable photoinitiator can be incorporated by radical copolymerization in the polymer chain of copolymers. Polymerizable photoinitiators preferably have the following basic structure:
X is an ester group selected from -OC (= O) -, - (C = O) -O- and -O- (C = O) -O-, and
B is a monovalent organic radical containing an ethylenically unsaturated, radically polymerizable group. Preferred radicals A are radicals which contain at least one structural element which is derived from phenones, in particular from acetophenones or benzophenones. Preferred radicals B contain at least one, preferably exactly one acrylic or methacrylic group.
The ethylenically unsaturated group may be bonded directly to the group X. Likewise, the radiation-sensitive group can be bonded directly to the group X. However, it is also possible for a spacer group (spacer) to be present between the ethylenically unsaturated group and the group X or between the radiation-sensitive group and the group X. The spacer group may have, for example, a molecular weight of up to 500, in particular up to 300 or 200 g / mol.

In this way, adhesive articles, in particular adhesive articles with pressure-sensitively adhesive properties can be produced. The hotmelt adhesive according to the invention is a material which has pressure-sensitive adhesive properties, in particular after crosslinking by irradiation. A pressure sensitive adhesive is a viscoelastic adhesive whose set film remains permanently tacky and tacky at room temperature (20 ° C) when dry.
Preferred adhesive articles are adhesive labels, adhesive tapes and self-adhesive films. Particularly preferred are adhesive tapes. The invention therefore also adhesive tapes which on one band-shaped carrier material on one or both sides have a coating with a radiation-crosslinked hot melt adhesive according to the invention. The support material is preferably selected from polyethylene, polypropylene, cellulose, polyacetate and polyester.
In a variant of the method according to the invention, the hot-melt adhesive is already present in thin layers on a substrate during the microwave irradiation. This variant is used e.g. for thermal post-reaction of the finished adhesive films or for dissolving bonds. The substrates are either the above or preferably microwave inactive substrates. Thin layers are layers having a layer thickness of preferably 100 microns or less, e.g. 2 to 100 microns, or 10 to 80 microns or 20 to 70 microns.
The process according to the invention is characterized in that radiation-crosslinkable hotmelt adhesives based on poly (meth) acrylates can be liquefied quickly and without risk of premature crosslinking, viscosity increase or gel formation and applied to a suitable substrate.

Messung der NullviskositätMeasurement of the zero viscosity
I, Stempeldurchmesser 25 mm.The zero viscosity is the limit of the viscosity function at infinitely low shear rates. It is measured with an Anton Paar Rheometer MCR 100 (US 200 evaluation software) in plate / plate geometry. The samples are measured in oscillatory shear at a small shear amplitude of 10%. Temperature 130 ° C (or as indicated), angular frequency ramp log 100-0.1 1 / s, measuring gap 0.5 mm, evaluation according to Carreau-Gahleitner I, punch diameter 25 mm.
Bestimmung der Gelnote: Determination of the gel note:
Occur z.T. Lumps on (0.3 mm and larger gel bodies), the gelatin is increased by + 0.5.
