Description
The invention relates to novel scintillator particles for use in organic photodetectors, such as photodetectors for radiology.
In the detection of radiation, for example visible or infrared light, X-ray or gamma radiation, the radiation to be detected can penetrate into an absorption layer, be absorbed by this layer and thereby the radiation energy is converted during the absorption into an energy form, which is used for further signal processing can be. Preferably, the radiation energies are converted into electrical impulses. One distinguishes between direct and indirect conversion. In direct conversion, the incident radiation is converted by the absorption layer directly into charge carriers in the form of electron-hole pairs. In indirect conversion, on the other hand, the incident radiation is first converted into visible light, and subsequently this light generates charge carriers in the form of electron-hole pairs through the photons.

Materials for nanoscintillators are already known, but there is still a need for new materials for nanoscintillators.
The object of the present invention is therefore to provide new materials for nanoscintillators and to provide a process for the preparation thereof.
This object is solved by the subject matter of the present invention as disclosed in the specification and in the claims.
Accordingly, the present invention is a material for a nanoscintillator for embedding in an organic photoconductive layer in the form of a bulk heterojunction (BHJ), which is a mixture of an electron donor and an electron acceptor, the material yttrium and / or or gadolinium oxide and / or gadolinium borate with at least 10% europium doping [(Y, Gd) 2 O 3 : Eu and / or GdBO 3 : Eu]. In addition, the invention provides a process for the preparation of the material by precipitation in an aqueous medium using a water-soluble, surface-active substance which prevents agglomeration of the precipitate.
An organic photoconductive layer in the form of a bulk heterojunction (BHJ), which is a mixture of an electron donor and an electron acceptor, is, for example, a mixture of semiconducting polymer and / or small molecules. To this organic semiconductor mixture, the nanoszintillators are added to form the absorption layer.
The BHJ as carrier matrix for the nanoscintillators consists for example of P3HT and PCBM. Alternatively, other semiconductors can also be used, which can preferably be processed in liquid form and thus enable a good integration of nanoscintillators and optionally further fillers.
It is not mandatory to pay attention to photosensitivity, as the radiation is absorbed by the nanoscintillators. Crucial, however, is the band alignment between the nanoscintillator and the semiconductor of the BHJ.
With a suitable choice of the diameter of the nanoscintillator particles, the energy level of the lowest excited state of the nanoscintillator particles may be below the lowest unoccupied orbital (LUMO) of the PCBM molecule. Thus, electrons can be trapped. In contrast, the highest occupied orbital (HOMO) of the P3HT molecule is well above the highest occupied energy level of the nanoscintillator particle in the ground state and thus allows efficient hole transfer.
Nanoszintillatoren in the BHJ can be supplemented by further fillers.
Previously known nanoparticles are especially lead sulfide (PbS), lead selenide (PbSe) or Zinc oxide (ZnO). These fillers form quantum dots for direct conversion of incident radiation into electron-hole pairs. Alternatively, nanoscintillators such as doped gadolinium oxysulfide (GOS), cesium iodide (CsI) or YAG are possible, which first convert the incident radiation into light and then convert this visible light into electron-hole pairs.
According to the invention, at least 10% of europium-doped nanoszintillators are used, which are not only highly efficient X-ray scintillators, but are also particularly dispersible in accordance with a preferred production process because of their low agglomeration. The low agglomeration of the nanoscintillator particles results from the small size of nuclei due to the rapid precipitation and prevention of germ growth during production.
According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, the material for the nanoscintillators contains the dopant europium in an amount of 10 to 20%.
According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, the particle size of the nanoscintillators is in the range from 1 nm to 100 nm, in particular from 10 to 90 nm and very particularly preferably in the range from 15 to 85 nm.
For example, there is a nanoscintillator GdBO 3 : Eu with an average particle size of 10 to 30 nm, in particular of 15 to 25 and particularly preferably with a particle size of 20 nm.
According to another example, a nanoscrintillator (Y, Gd) 2 O 3 : Eu, also called (YGO: Eu), has a particle size in the range from 50 to 100 nm, in particular 60 to 90 nm and particularly preferably in the range from 70 to 80 nm, in particular at 75 nm before.
For the production of nanoszintillators a simple hydroxide precipitation is proposed. In particular, a suitable precipitation kinetics which avoids agglomeration is proposed.
This precipitation kinetics is achieved by the use of a suitable water-soluble and surface-active substance, for example n-hexanol, in particular 1-hexanol, and a high proportion of dopant europium. After the precipitation reaction, a suspension is first obtained which is disintegrated by means of ultrasound and freeze-dried. The disintegrated and freeze-dried powder has low agglomeration and excellent conditions for good dispersibility.
By using the Hydroxidprecursoren such as nitrates, chlorides, etc., in the case of the production of (YGO: Eu) already at a transition temperature of 450 ° C (calcination temperature) produce the required luminescence phase YGO: Eu and by the floating state in the fluidized bed, the material falls nanodisperse. The reason for this is the small germ size due to rapid precipitation and prevention of germ growth due to the surface coverage with n-hexanol. In the thermal post-treatment, the agglomeration is probably avoided by the low transition temperature, which is possible by the use of Hydroxidprecursoren. Likewise, a lower particle contact is advantageous at a lower transformation temperature.
The high dopant content allows a sufficient concentration in the ordered core volume and thus in the actual luminescence volume of the individual nanoscintillator particle, thus an efficient phosphor.
In the preparation, the water-soluble surface-active substance is preferred in the ratio of 1: 1 to 1: 3, ie the salts in the same ratio or in excess, for example in the ratio 1: 1.1; 1: 1.2; 1: 1.3; 1: 1.4; 1: 1.5; 1: 1.6; 1: 1.7; 1: 1.8 or 1: 1.9 and water-soluble surfactant to hydroxide precursors in the ratio 1: 2; 1: 2.1; 1: 2.2; 1: 2.3; 1: 2.4; 1: 2.5; 1: 2.6; 1: 2.7; 1: 2.8; 1: 2, 9 or 1: 3 is used.
In the production of the GdBO 3 : Eu, the manufacturing process for the hydrothermal process is varied. This is carried out using disintegration of the precursor and a water-soluble surfactant to prevent agglomeration and luminescent phase formation. Again, a high level of dopant in the range of 10 to 20% europium results in the production of an efficient x-ray converter.
Decisive for the production of the highly efficient dispersible X-ray nanoscintillator GdBO 3 : Eu is the precipitation using the water-soluble, surface-active substance n-hexanol. The freeze-dried powder has low agglomeration and best dispersibility.
Beispiel 1: Example 1:
5 mmol of 1-hexanol are dissolved with stirring in 1000 ml of dem. Water initially introduced. Thereafter, 4.7 mmol (Y (NO 3 ) 3 ); 2.1 mmol Gd (NO 3 ) 3 and 1.2 mmol Eu (NO 3 ) 3 were added. After complete dissolution, ammonia is added rapidly as a 25% aqueous solution with stirring. After a reaction time of about 15 minutes, the stirrer is turned off and the precipitate sedimented.
The supernatant solution is decanted and the precipitate washed twice with about 400ml deionized water with stirring. The resulting suspension is disintegrated by means of ultrasound and freeze-dried. The freeze-dried, withdrawn powder is finally calcined in the fluidized bed reactor at 450 ° C for two and a half hours under air.
Beispiel 2: Example 2:
In 800 ml of demineralized water are 0.008mol Gd (NO 3 ) 3 ; 0.002 mol Eu (NO 3 ) 3 and 5 mmol n-hexanol. After complete dissolution, ammonia is added with stirring as a 25% aqueous solution. After a reaction time of about 15 minutes, the stirrer is turned off and the precipitate sedimented. The supernatant solution is decanted and the precipitate (= precipitate) washed twice with about 400ml deionized water with stirring. 0.02 mol of boric acid, ammonia as a 25% aqueous solution and 5 mmol of n-hexanol are added to the resulting suspension and disintegrated with ultrasound, then filled into the reaction vessel of the autoclave. After closing the autoclave, the conversion to GdBO 3 : Eu takes place at 195 ° C within 14 hours. The resulting settled reaction product is washed twice with about 200 ml of deionized water and then freeze-dried.
The invention provides a dispersible material for a high efficiency nano scintillator. The material for the nanoscintillator is preferably inserted embedded in a bulk heterojunction matrix between two electrode layers in a radiation detector.
