Description
In recent years, alternative materials for transparent electrodes have created a great deal of interest, as the product life cycles of displays become shorter and solar cells cheaper. The electronics and photovoltaic industries are therefore looking for cheaper materials and, moreover, materials with new functions which the traditional material indium tin oxide (ITO) does not offer. ITO has several economic and technological disadvantages. Highly transparent and conductive ITO films are applied using a sputtering process that requires temperatures of several hundred degrees Celsius. Energy is thus consumed during manufacture and does not permit the use of substrates having lower temperature stability, such as flexible polyethylene terephthalate (PET) films. Even if the substrate were flexible, ITO could not be used in a flexible electronic unit because ITO itself is brittle. The growth market for flexible electronics and promising new applications such as tactile sensors in the field of soft-robotics with artificial skin have contributed to the development of research into alternative materials in recent years.
The present invention provides embodiments that address the need for providing a transparent conductive coating, and a method for making the same. The transparent conductive coating meets industry standards for the manufacture of displays, solar cells, electrochromic windows, etc. The manufacturing process is compatible with rigid and flexible substrates. The substrates, like flexible PET films, have a low temperature stability. The method can therefore be used to produce a wide range of flexible electronics. Hereinafter, several embodiments of the present invention will be described. Preferred embodiments are described in the corresponding dependent claims.
One embodiment provides a transparent conductive coating comprising silver nanowires and carbon nanotubes, wherein the silver nanowires and the carbon nanotubes form an electrically conductive network.
In a further embodiment, the transparent conductive coating has a haze of less than 1.5%, preferably less than 0.5%, a sheet resistance of less than 100 ohms, and a light transmission of greater than 97% or preferably 98% at a wavelength of 550 nm.
The transparent conductive coating having parameters set forth in this embodiment can be used to fabricate wiring layers in various types of displays or any other electronic device related to the visualization of information for a human.
In another embodiment, the transparent conductive coating has a haze of less than 1.5%, a sheet resistance of less than 300 ohms, and a light transmittance of over 99% at a wavelength of 550 nm.
The transparent conductive coating having parameters set forth in this embodiment can be used to make wiring layers in various types of displays or any other electronic units involved in the visualization of information for a human requiring extremely high transparency and the sheet resistance is less important. It may be advantageous, for example, for small displays of mobile telecommunications equipment, in which case the displays are small and the resistivity of the wiring is less important compared to large home televisions. On the other hand, the exceptional transparency of the transparent conductive coating lowers the energy consumption needed to emit light during imaging on a display because it absorbs very little light.
