Description
The present invention relates to a process for the production of nanopowders. Nanopowders find use in a variety of technical fields, for example, as fillers, catalysts, chemically active materials, absorbents, decorative materials, marking agents, and the like.
In the prior art, a large number of methods are known for producing nanopowders. All methods have in common that the production is very complex and therefore expensive. It is desirable to increase the yield of nanopowder and the efficiency in comparison with the conventional methods.
Korchagin et al. („Production of Nanopowders using high power electron accelerator“, Proceedings of RuPAC 2008, Zvenigorod, Russia, pp. 330–332) beschreibt ein Verfahren zur Herstellung von Nanopulver. Korchagin et al. ("Production of Nanopowders using high power electron accelerators", Proceedings of RuPAC 2008, Zvenigorod, Russia, pp. 330-332) describes a process for the production of nanopowders. In this case, an electron beam gun is used with very high acceleration voltage. The preparation is carried out under gas flow, wherein a flow rate of about 15 m 3 / min is set. The energy and gas consumption of such a system is extremely high, so that an economical production of nanopowder is not possible with this method.
There appears to be a need to provide methods that enable efficient and inexpensive production of nanopowder. The nanopowders produced according to the invention should furthermore have the most favorable particle size distribution possible and be presentable with high purity. The method according to the claims is suitable to meet these requirements.
- Providing at least one material source in a process chamber,
- - evacuating the process chamber,
- Heating the material to a temperature at which the material evaporates by means of at least one electron beam gun or plasma torch as heat source, during which gas is vaporized at a flow rate of 1-1000 sl / min (standard liter per minute), corresponds to 1-1000 l / min at standard conditions, is introduced into the process chamber and in the process chamber, a pressure of at least 1.5 Pa is set, so that nanoparticles are obtained,
- - Removal of the nanopowder from the process chamber.
It has been found that nanopowders which are very advantageous in terms of particle size and particle size distribution while maintaining the above-mentioned process parameters. An essential difference from the prior art is that the inventive method is carried out at reduced pressure, but which is at least 1.5 Pa. In combination with the essential but moderate gas flow according to the invention, advantageous nanopowders are produced in very good yield. Yields of over 50% (m / m), in particular over 60% or over 75% in relation to the evaporated material are possible with the method.
The material source preferably consists of a solid body, it is in particular a cylindrical body. However, other shapes are conceivable, in particular those with a rectangular cross-section. The source of material may be rotatable and preferably rotate during the process to assist uniform vaporization. When an electron beam gun is used as a heat source, it is usually not necessary to rotate the material source because of the flexibility of the beam deflection. The material source comprises the material to be evaporated. The material to be evaporated is preferably a metal, a semi-metal, a ceramic, carbon or a mixture or alloy thereof. The material is preferably selected from the transition metals, especially those of groups IVB, VB and VIB, and iron, cobalt, nickel, lithium, beryllium, aluminum and silicon and mixtures thereof. Carbon, in particular in the form of graphite, can also be used. Preferred ceramics are oxide, nitride or oxynitride ceramics and also carbides, in particular SiO 2 , TiN, Gd 2 O 3 or mixtures thereof.
The method can be operated using more than one material source. In such a case, more than one Material source provided. In some preferred embodiments, two or more sources of material are used ("co-evaporation"). As a result, nanopowder with mixed composition can be produced in very homogeneous quality. Such co-evaporation is particularly useful to represent nanopowders of lithium compounds, metal oxides, metal halide compounds or CuCr nanopowder. Further, it may be advantageous to use multiple sources of material to achieve the required evaporation rate, even if only one type of material is vaporized.
In one embodiment of the invention, the nanopowder obtained consists of the material of the material source. In another embodiment of the invention, the nanopowder consists of a reaction product of the material of the material source with at least one further reactant. This additional reactant may be in the gas which is introduced into the process chamber. In certain embodiments, the gas is the reactant. In this way, it is possible to adjust or control the compositions and material properties of the resulting nanopowders in a targeted manner. For example, compound components of the material to be vaporized, which are lost by decomposition, can be supplied via the gas. Furthermore, targeted new compounds can be produced.
The heat source is preferably selected from an electron beam gun and a plasma torch. It can also be used several heat sources. The temperatures in the process chamber must be capable of vaporizing the material at the prevailing pressure and, if necessary, evoking the desired reaction. In preferred embodiments, this temperature is at least 800 ° C, more preferably at least 1000 ° C. However, in order to keep the energy consumption as low as possible, the process temperature should not exceed a value of at most 4,000 ° C, more preferably at most 2,500 ° C, and most preferably at most 1,500 ° C. When the material is heated with electron beam technology, a very high energy density is achieved, so that even with a relatively low total power the local power density can be very high. As a result, even materials with a very high evaporation temperature can be melted and evaporated. The beam (relatively small in diameter compared to the diameter of the material source) scans across the source of material. The local energy density is controlled via the density of the scan lines, the scan speed and the beam focus via control electronics. The electron beam can be split into a plurality of evaporation sources, even if only one gun is generated.
In preferred embodiments, the pressure in the process chamber is less than one atmosphere, in particular less than 100 kPa. It has been found that the energy requirement of the process can be reduced if the pressure in the process chamber during the process is lower. It has proven to be particularly advantageous to set a pressure in the process chamber which is less than 10 kPa, more preferably less than 2 kPa, and particularly preferably less than 1 kPa. Especially advantageous were pressures of less than 150 Pa and less than 80 Pa. This is due to the fact that, in particular when using an electron beam gun as the heat source, the higher the pressure in the process chamber, the higher the acceleration voltage has to be applied. The above pressure data refers to the pressure in the process chamber after evacuation. The pressure is preferably kept at these values throughout the process (except perhaps with the removal of the nanopowder).
However, care should also be taken that the pressure in the process chamber is not too low during the process. The nanoparticles are surprisingly produced particularly efficiently if a certain minimum amount of gas is present in the process chamber. Therefore, the pressure in the process chamber should be at least 1.5 Pa. If the pressure is lower, the formation of nanopowder is greatly reduced. The presence of a certain minimum amount of gas reduces the free path of the molecules / particles of the vaporized material so that the particles agglomerate more quickly into nanoparticles. Particularly advantageous is a pressure in the process chamber of at least 5 Pa, more preferably at least 10 Pa and more preferably at least 20 Pa. The above pressure specifications relate in particular to the conditions in the pressure chamber after evacuation. Increasing pressure in the chamber causes a decrease in the mean free path of the vapor particles. Descriptive equations for this can be found in the literature or are part of the general technical knowledge. There is an increasing loss of energy of the vapor particles and their aggregation in the gas space with increasing pressure. If the pressure is too low, the particles would move freely in the field of vision, hit a boundary wall and build up a solid layer.
The gas flow is according to the invention 1 to 1000 sl / min, preferably 2 to 750 sl / min, more preferably 5 to 400 sl / min, more preferably 10 to 200 sl / min and more preferably 15 to 80 sl / min. The flow rate must not be too high. However, if the gas flow is too low, the desired reaction of material with reactant in the gas will not allows and / or the nanopowder is not obtained in a satisfactory yield.
In a particularly preferred embodiment, an electron beam gun is used as the heat source. Under the circumstances, it is particularly advantageous to choose an electron beam gun operating at an acceleration voltage of at least 20 kV. If the acceleration voltage is too low, the electron beam does not reach the material source in a sufficiently focused form and the evaporation does not occur. It has proved to be particularly advantageous to select an electron beam gun which is operated with an acceleration voltage of 40 kV or more, in particular more than 60 kV or more than 75 kV. It is particularly advantageous if the acceleration voltage of the electron beam gun does not exceed a value of 200 kV, more preferably 150 kV and particularly preferably 100 kV. Higher acceleration voltages require great expenditure on equipment and lead to higher costs. The power of the heat source is preferably more than 100 kW, more preferably more than 130 kW and particularly preferably more than 150 kW. The evaporation rate of the material to be evaporated is preferably at least 1 kg / h, more preferably at least 3 kg / h, more preferably at least 5 kg / h.
During the process, at least one gas is introduced into the process chamber. The gas which is in the process chamber during the process is preferably selected from inert gas, reactive gas and mixtures thereof. According to the invention, inert gas is understood as meaning a gas which does not react chemically with the material to be vaporized. Preferred inert gases are the noble gases or nitrogen, in particular argon, helium or nitrogen. A reactive gas is a gas which, under the process conditions, undergoes a chemical reaction with the material of at least one material source. Reactive gases preferred according to the invention are oxygen, halogens, hydrogen, nitrogen and / or carbon compounds, in particular acetylene.
The pressure within the process chamber is preferably chosen so that the free path for vaporized particles of the material is in an optimum range. As a result, the distance between the heat source and the material source can be selected to be particularly small, since the agglomeration of the particles into nanoparticles already takes place over a short path length. As a result, the system can be built relatively small and the costs are lower. In particularly preferred embodiments, the distance between the heat source and the material source is less than 2 m, and more preferably less than 1.2 m.
The method is preferably performed in a device having at least the process chamber, the heat source, a vacuum pump, a gas inlet, and a material source. The material source is preferably arranged in the process chamber so that it can be moved in the direction of the electron guns or the plasma torch to track material when a portion of the material is already vaporized. This ensures that the distance between the heat source and the material source is constant. The process chamber should also have another closable opening which allows the nanopowder to be removed.
The nanopowder produced by the process according to the invention preferably has particle sizes which are in a range of less than 1000 nm, preferably less than 700 nm, more preferably less than 300 nm. Preferred particle sizes are at least 5 nm, more preferably at least 15 nm and particularly preferably at least 60 nm, more preferably at least 100 nm. In particular, at least 90% of the particles in the nanopowder have a size in this range. The particle size is determined microscopically, in particular by scanning electron microscopy. By "particle size" is meant the particle diameter, in particular the Martin diameter.
An evaluation of the particle properties, in particular the shape and size of the particles by means of image evaluation has shown that the particles are predominantly spherical and have an advantageous size distribution, which simplifies further processing.
The nanopowder preferably consists of the same material as the material source. In another embodiment, the nanopowder is a material formed by chemical reaction of the vaporized material with a reactant.
Beispiel: Example:
Li, Na) Two sources of material were used, one source consisting of a group IVb, Vb, VIb or Fe, Ni, Co. metal and another source consisting of one or more elements of the I main group (e.g., Li, Na).
NH3 + Ar + Cl2 oder Ar + He + Ne + O2). The evaporation was carried out in a process chamber at pressures of 1.5 to 50 Pa, the experiment was repeated at different pressures in 5 Pa steps. Further, various gas compositions were tested. These gas mixtures included variations of various noble gas gases (eg Ar + He) or mixtures of inert, noble and reactive gases (eg NH 3 + Ar + Cl 2 or Ar + He + Ne + O 2 ).
Thus, evaporation rates of more than 15 kg / h were achieved. The experiments have shown that a nanopowder yield of up to 80% (m / m) is possible. Over 90% of the particles had a size between 100 nm and 300 nm.
