Description
The invention relates to a series-connected composite of cells with a membrane and arranged on both sides of the membrane electrodes, which is completed on both sides in each case by a plastic wall and is sealed at the longitudinal edges. Such a composite is particularly suitable for the production of redox flow storage systems. The invention further relates to a method for producing such a composite.
Redox flow batteries or redox flow storage systems are based on the principle that two electrolytes flow through the half cells of an electrochemical cell, thereby changing their oxidation state on the surface of the electrodes. The emitted or absorbed in the half-cell reactions electrons perform work via an external circuit. The circuit is closed by an ion-conductive separating layer or membrane, which ensures the charge balance between the two half-cells. To make larger units, a whole series of cells must be connected in series.

The use of bipolar plates for interconnecting the cells is complicated and increases the total resistance of the cell network. In addition, it is difficult to produce a larger composite in a simple and inexpensive manner, since the individual cells and the bipolar plates each have to be connected to each other so as to produce a cell stack.
Against this background, the present invention seeks to provide a serially interconnected composite according to the type mentioned above, which can be produced in a simple and cost-effective manner, and to provide a manufacturing method for producing such a composite, which is applicable on a large scale.
- a) Bereitstellen von bandförmigem Elektrodenmaterial für eine erste und eine zweite bandförmige Elektrode;
- b) Bereitstellen von bandförmigem Kunststoffmaterial für eine erste und eine zweite Zellwandbahn und Ausstanzen von randseitigen Versorgungslöchern an beiden Rändern jeder Zellwandbahn;
- c) Bereitstellen von bandförmigem Material für eine ionenleitende Membranbahn und Vorbehandeln der Membranbahn an ausgewählten Linien in Querrichtung sowie an beiden Rändern in Längsrichtung;
- d) Zusammenführen einer ersten Zellwandbahn, gefolgt von einer ersten Elektrodenbahn, der Membranbahn, einer zweiten Elektrodenbahn und einer zweiten Zellwandbahn in einem Rolle-zu-Rolle-Verfahren und randseitiges Verbinden der Bahnen durch lokales Aufschmelzen an den beiden Rändern;
- e) lokales Aufschmelzen des im Schritt (d) hergestellten Verbundes entlang der zuvor vorbehandelten Linien in Querrichtung;
- a) providing band-shaped electrode material for a first and a second band-shaped electrode;
- b) providing band-shaped plastic material for a first and a second cell wall web and punching out marginal service holes at both edges of each cell wall panel;
- c) providing band-shaped material for an ion-conducting membrane web and pretreating the membrane web on selected lines in the transverse direction and at both edges in the longitudinal direction;
- d) merging a first cell wall web, followed by a first electrode web, the membrane web, a second electrode web and a second cell wall web in a roll-to-roll process and bonding the webs together by local fusing at the two edges;
- e) local melting of the composite produced in step (d) along the previously pretreated lines in the transverse direction;
- f) separating the composite by a subtractive process on selected lines in the transverse direction alternately on one side and the other side between adjacent melting zones from the step (e) for creating trenches that electrically interrupt the respective electrode on a membrane side.
The object of the invention is completely solved in this way.
According to the invention, the entire composite can be produced in a roll-to-roll process, which ensures a simple and cost-effective production and also a high degree of certainty that the composite produced in this way is also sufficiently sealed when it is used in the operation of electrolytes, ie an anolyte and a catholyte, is flowed through.
In a composite produced in this way, the serial connection of the adjacent cells is ensured by the band-shaped electrodes which pass through adjacent cells and are densified in a fluid-tight manner between adjacent cells by the production method. By separating the electrodes by a subtractive method according to step (f) alternately on the one and on the other side the desired serial connection is guaranteed.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the trenches formed in step (f) are sealed with plastic immediately after their production.
This results in a high integrity and mechanical resistance of the composite.
According to a further embodiment of the invention, the electrodes are produced in step (a) from porous graphite material, in particular from one or more layers of graphite paper, to which a plurality of longitudinally over the entire length extending metal strip, preferably copper strip, at certain intervals on a surface be applied, preferably non-conductive attached or soldered at certain points.
In an additional embodiment of this embodiment, plastic strips of greater width than the metal strips are applied over the metal strip, preferably applied by plastic adhesive dots, also on the opposite side plastic strips aligned with the plastic strip on the first page, preferably by Kunststoffklebepunkte, and then the plastic strips on both sides of the Graphite material melted by hot rolling into the surface of the graphite material.
In this way, the graphite electrodes are electrically connected to well-conducting current collector strips and are reliably protected from chemical attack by the electrolyte solution.
According to a further embodiment of the invention, in each case a protective strip of plastic is applied to the membrane at the predetermined points at which the separation of the electrodes takes place later in step (f) on the surface facing the release side.
In this way it is prevented that the running on the opposite side of the electrode or the current collector strip extending thereon is only injured by the subsequent separation step.
The separation of the electrodes at the predetermined locations may be accomplished by a mechanical cutting or sawing process, such as by a cutting roll, or by a laser cutting process.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention is used as a plastic material for all plastic parts polypropylene or optionally polyethylene, wherein the plastic material is preferably free of plasticizer.
Also, the plastic material for closing the trenches is preferably polyethylene, which is pressed or injected into the trenches, expediently at elevated temperature, so that a sufficient flowability is given.
According to a further embodiment of the invention, electrolyte supply lines are connected to the supply holes punched out in step (b), preferably by fitting electrolyte fittings accurately over the associated supply holes at predetermined locations and welding them to the surrounding surface of the cell wall web, preferably by mirror welding.
In this way, a clean and even at high hydraulic pressure sufficiently tight connection of the electrolyte supply lines is ensured. For mirror welding, the parts to be joined are first brought to a certain distance from each other and then heated locally by an introduced heated metal plate, so that after removal of the metal plate, the relevant parts can be welded together under pressure.
According to another embodiment of the invention, a group of supply holes is connected to an electrolyte fitting connected to an electrolyte main line using at least four main electrolyte leads, one main electrolyte lead for the anolyte supply and the catholyte supply, and one main electrolyte lead for the anolyte removal and the catholyte discharge, respectively , which are connected to the associated cells of the network each via a voltage reduction path.
In this way, the hydraulic supply of the catholyte-anolyte composite can be suitably ensured to produce a highly efficient composite which is particularly suitable for a redox flow battery, in particular for a vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB). ,
According to a further embodiment of the invention, the voltage reduction sections are each made by wrapping the relevant electrolyte main line with a hose, with which the relevant electrolyte main line is connected to the associated electrolyte connection piece.
In this way, results in a particularly simple production of the voltage reduction sections, which were usually formed in the prior art as meandering in enclosed spaces. With the method according to the invention results in a significant simplification.
The electrolyte fittings are preferably made by injection molding, preferably polypropylene or polyethylene.
In this way, results in a simple and inexpensive production.
According to a further embodiment of the invention, a membrane web is used which is narrower than the cell wall webs, preferably narrower by about 5 to 15 mm, and which is preferably made of a modified PTFE film, in particular of a PTFE film modified with perfluorosulfonic acid.
In this way, the membrane web can be trapped and integrated immediately upon joining the various webs between the plastic webs without the need for further steps. The modified PTFE material used has proven to be particularly advantageous for a highly effective membrane.
In order to ensure a good adhesion of the membrane in the integration into the two plastic webs at the edges and a good adhesion in the production of transversely extending Einschmelzzonen, the pretreatment of the membrane web is preferably carried out in step (c) by oxidation in an oxidation bath to the predetermined Put.
For this purpose, the membrane web for the oxidation of the longitudinal edges in step (c) suspended in the longitudinal direction and are immersed with two longitudinal edges in the oxidation bath with a predetermined depth.
Furthermore, the membrane web for oxidation in the transverse direction in step (c) between the upper and lower pulleys are hung zig-zag-shaped and immersed in the oxidation bath with a predetermined immersion depth of preferably 5 to 10 mm, after treatment is further moved and with the next Submerged until all selected lines are transversely oxidized.
As the oxidation bath, for example, sodium may be used dissolved in ammonia.
By means of such an oxidation treatment, good adhesion can be ensured in the subsequent application of plastic, in particular of polypropylene, to the membrane web.
A series-connected composite of cells produced by the method described above has a membrane membrane and electrode paths arranged on both sides of the membrane membrane, the composite being closed on both sides by a continuous plastic cell wall membrane over its entire length and by the longitudinal edges a connection of the two cell wall webs is sealed, wherein the serial interconnection is formed by continuous electrode tracks which are interrupted electrically in the transverse direction alternately on one and the other side at each (n) -th and each (n + 1) -th cell.
Such a series-connected composite of cells preferably each has a group of supply holes on the cells connected to an electrolyte fitting connected to an electrolyte main, at least four main electrolyte leads being provided, an electrolyte main lead for the anolyte supply and the catholyte supply and in each case an electrolyte main line for the Anolytabfuhr and Katholytabfuhr, which are connected to the associated cells of the composite each via a voltage reduction path.
Preferably, the voltage reduction sections are each formed by at least one winding of a hose around at least one main electrolyte line.
In this way results in a highly effective composite of serially interconnected cells, the hydraulic connections are ensured in a simple and cost-effective manner.

For example, the format and area of the individual cells may be approximately DIN A4, with the cell measuring 20 cm in the flow direction and 30 cm in the flow direction, for example. It falls about such a cell from about 1 bar of pressure. larger Surfaces are preferred as long as the electrolyte pressure in the system does not become too large for the necessary electrolyte flow, preferably not significantly greater than 1 bar.
The number of cells connected in series is preferably determined from the minimum of the system cost / system performance ratio. The higher the input voltage (DC), the better the cost of inverters and their efficiency. Since this is the output voltage of the composite, but also increase the shunt losses with it via the electrolyte paths between hydraulically connected and electrically connected in series half cells of the same polarity. These losses can be reduced by hydraulic separation of the cell series into shorter cell series. But this in turn increases the cost of the necessary pumping system.
