Description
The present invention relates to a lithium-sulfur battery containing a sulfur compound-containing cathode having a metal oxide coating, a process for producing the sulfur compound-containing cathode, the sulfur compound-containing cathode per se, and the use of a metal oxide coating on a sulfur compound-containing cathode to increase the cycle stability of a lithium-sulfur battery.
Due to growing concerns about greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and climate change, there is an increasing need to replace fossil fuels with alternative sources of energy. While some progress has been made in the use of alternative energy sources for stationary applications, the application to mobile applications, such as automobiles, still poses a challenge.
A development focus for the major manufacturers is the electrification of motor vehicles. However, this approach faces some problems, such as the need for high energy density, long life batteries with consistently low cost. In this context, the lithium-sulfur battery (Li-S battery), whose theoretical energy density of about 2300 mWh / g (Li 2 S) is more than four times the theoretical energy density of ordinary lithium-ion batteries, an interesting In addition, lithium-sulfur batteries use inexpensive materials such as sulfur instead of expensive transition metals.
The advantages of the gravimetrically higher energy density and the lower cost of the active material sulfur, the serious disadvantage of low cycle stability precludes. The low cycle stability of lithium-sulfur batteries is based on the current state of knowledge in various mechanisms. Among other things, during discharge on the cathode side of lithium-sulfur cells, polysulfides are formed which dissolve in the electrolyte composition and migrate from the cathode to the anode in a diffusion- or migration-driven manner. On the anode side, the long-chain polysulfides formed at the beginning of the discharge on the cathode side are further reduced to short-chain polysulfides. Short-chain polysulfides, such as Li 2 S 2 and Li 2 S, are formed, which are no longer soluble in the electrolyte composition. These precipitate in the electrolyte composition due to their low solubility or deposit as an inactive layer on the anode. These precipitated or anode-deposited polysulfide species are no longer available when charging the cell for the oxidation reaction at the cathode. It comes to a capacity loss of the cathode and thus to a greatly reduced cell capacity.
The technical effect, namely the reduction of Polysulfidwanderung, can also be achieved on the basis of lithium-ion conductive solid. In this case, solid electrolytes, such as Li 14 Zn (GeO 4 ) 4 (LISICON), Li 2.88 PO 3.73 N 0.14 (LIPON) and glass ceramic of Li 10 GiP 2 S 12 , can be used. However, solid electrolytes have the significant disadvantage that they have poor ion conductivity at low temperatures.
Further, gel or polymer electrolytes based on polyethylene oxide (PEO) have been used in the prior art, which only partially suppress polysulfide transport. The ionic conductivity of these gel or polymer electrolytes is lower than with liquid electrolytes. Another possibility offered in the prior art to improve cycle stability is the use of encapsulated sulfur particles from which the polysulfides can not escape and migrate to the anode.
However, the prior art does not disclose an apparatus and / or method which effectively enables the formation of short-chain polysulfides and thus their failure in discharging lithium-sulfur batteries in the form of lithium salts such as Li 2 S 2 and Li 2 S on the Anode or cathode surface can be prevented, in particular so as to improve the cycle stability of lithium-sulfur batteries.
It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a lithium-sulfur battery and a method for the production thereof, wherein the cycle stability of the lithium-sulfur battery is improved, in particular by reducing and / or preventing the formation of insoluble lithium sulfide salts and / or short-chain polysulfides.
The object underlying the invention is achieved by a lithium-sulfur battery comprising at least one solid lithium-containing anode, at least one sulfur compound-containing cathode and a separator, wherein the sulfur compound is the active material of the cathode and the at least one sulfur compound-containing cathode has a metal oxide coating.
An advantage of the metal oxide coating on the cathode is that the forming during the discharge of the battery long-chain polysulfides, especially Li 2 S 4 , Li 2 S 6 and Li 2 S 8 , which are held in the cathode by absorption, do not diffuse to the anode and / or migrate. Thus, it is prevented that they are further reduced to insoluble lithium sulfides, preferably Li 2 S 2 and Li 2 S, which can preferentially deposit on the electrode surface. Without the metal oxide coating according to the invention, these deposits lead to a partial or even complete blocking of the ion transport from the electrode surface into the interior of the electrode, in particular the anode. As a result of the metal oxide coating according to the invention, which preferably also acts as an electrically insulating layer, the reduction and separation of these insoluble short-chain polysulfides does not occur at all or only in a reduced manner. In addition, the metal oxide coating has high lithium ion conductivity at low temperatures as well as mechanical and chemical stability. Furthermore, the metal oxide coating on the cathode according to the invention is an inexpensive improvement over the embodiments disclosed in the prior art.
Preferably, the invention provides a lithium-sulfur battery wherein the metal oxide coating is an alumina coating or a titanium coating.
An advantage of the aluminum oxide coating is that relatively little aluminum oxide must be used in order to provide the technical effect according to the invention that no polysulfide diffusion or migration takes place to the cathode. In addition, aluminum oxide also acts as an insulator, which additionally improves cycle stability. By the aluminum oxide coating namely an electrical connection for the required electron exchange is reduced, preferably prevented. As a result, the reduction and separation of the insoluble short-chain lithium sulfides, preferably Li 2 S 2 and Li 2 S, reduced on the cathode surface, preferably prevented.
Preferably, the lithium-sulfur battery according to the invention is designed so that the aluminum oxide coating has a thickness of 0.4 to 4 nm.

In this layer thickness of the aluminum oxide coating, a high ion transport is ensured despite at least low permeability, preferably impermeability, for polysulfides. Preferably, the cathode as sulfur compound sulfur and / or polysulfides, preferably sulfur, as an active material. The cathode of the lithium-sulfur battery according to the invention has carbon, preferably graphite, as the matrix for the sulfur compound.
