The present invention relates to a process for producing a particulate lithium sulfide-carbon composite, in particular to a process for preparing a particulate lithium sulfide-carbon composite by spray-drying a mixture of a lithium and sulfur-containing lithium sulfide precursor compound, a carbonaceous reducing agent and optionally an aqueous additive Solution, as well as the use of the obtainable by the process lithium sulfide-carbon composite as the cathode material in lithium batteries.
Stand der TechnikState of the art
Due to the increasing popularity of electric mobility, there is an increased demand for rechargeable electrochemical storage systems such as lithium-ion batteries. However, the energy density of conventional lithium-ion batteries is insufficient for many applications. A promising alternative to conventional lithium-ion batteries is the use of lithium-sulfur batteries, which have significantly higher capacities compared to conventional battery systems. In this case, no lithium is intercalated into the cathode structures, but instead a stepwise conversion of the sulfur over polysulfides to lithium sulfide (Li 2 S) takes place. However, because all sulfur species have very poor electrical conductivities, the cathode structures must be modified with a conductive additive such as carbon. To improve the conductivity of the cathode material, the prior art has proposed the use of a lithium sulfide-carbon composite. Here, the lithium sulfide is present in a carbon matrix. However, in order to ensure high sulfur utilization during cycling, it is necessary to distribute the sulfur species as homogeneously as possible in the carbon matrix.
However, the use of elemental lithium and elemental sulfur places high demands on process control and process reliability. In particular, the process must be carried out in the absence of moisture in order to prevent the release of harmful hydrogen sulphide. Furthermore, due to the use of organic solvents, a complicated purification of the solvents must take place after the lithium sulfide synthesis. In addition, the harsh reaction conditions of using lithium metal make it difficult to control the (nano) structure of the final lithium sulfide material.
The homogeneous modification of lithium sulfide with carbon thus represents a particular challenge that could not be solved satisfactorily in the prior art so far. Thus, there is a need for an improved process for preparing a particulate lithium sulfide-carbon composite which avoids the disadvantages of the prior art processes.
Aufgabe der ErfindungObject of the invention
The invention is therefore based on the object to provide a method for producing a particulate lithium sulfide-carbon composite, which allows a simpler and (more cost-effective) process control. The method should also be well scalable and suitable for large scale application. In addition, to be obtainable by the method, a lithium sulfide-carbon composite, which has a homogeneous distribution of the carbon matrix in the lithium sulfide, and allows optimal electrochemical utilization of the lithium sulfide with high cycle stability.

Detaillierte Beschreibung der ErfindungDetailed description of the invention
Step i) of the process of the present invention comprises providing a mixture of a) a lithium and sulfur-containing lithium sulfide precursor compound, b) a carbonaceous reducing agent, and optionally c) an additive, which mixture may be dissolved or dispersed in a suitable solvent.
In a particular embodiment, the lithium- and sulfur-containing precursor compound a) is selected from lithium sulfate, lithium sulfite, lithium thiosulfate, lithium dithionate or mixtures thereof. Particularly preferred is lithium sulfate. The use of lithium sulfate has the advantage that it can be prepared inexpensively by the reaction of lithium carbonate with sulfuric acid, is easy to handle and is readily soluble in water.
In order to improve the cyclic properties of the obtained lithium sulfide-carbon composites when used in lithium batteries, the content of carbon-containing reducing agent is selected such that a conductive carbon layer is formed on or between the lithium sulfide particles. The weight ratio of lithium- and sulfur-containing precursor compound a) and reducing agent b) is typically in the range from 10: 1 to 1:10, preferably in the range from 2: 1 to 1: 5, particularly preferably in the range from 1: 1 to 1: third
The mixture of lithium- and sulfur-containing precursor compound and the carbonaceous reducing agent may further contain one or more additives c) which may be soluble or insoluble in water, with water-soluble additives being preferred. Typical additives are selected from silicates, metal salts, as well as carbon-containing additives. The addition of metal salts such as titanium sulfate or titanium oxysulfate in the process of the present invention has the advantageous effect that they can be converted under the reducing conditions in the metal sulfide, in particular titanium sulfide, which as well as the carbon matrix distributed homogeneously and nanoscopically in the composite particles. Since titanium sulfides in particular are very good electrical conductors, lithium ions can rapidly (de-) intercalate. Thereby, by suitable selection of the additive or additives in a variable manner, the electrochemical properties of the lithium sulfide-carbon composites obtainable by the process can be controlled.
Furthermore, the additive may comprise metal particles and / or metal oxide particles, which are preferably present in the form of nanoparticles. preferred Metals include, for example, iron and titanium. Preferred metal oxides include ferric oxide, ferric oxide and titanium (IV) oxide. The addition of metal particles has the advantageous effect that they are converted into metal sulfides in the process according to the invention, whereby a stronger interaction with present polysulfides takes place. This can lead to improved retention of these species in the cathode structure. Metal oxide particles can be reduced to the metal in situ in the process according to the invention and subsequently converted into the corresponding metal sulfide.

Usually, the mixture of the components a), b) and optionally c) is provided in a solvent, wherein mixtures of two or more solvents can be used. However, in particular for improving the solubility of the precursor compounds and additives used, one or more organic solvents may also be added or the solvent may comprise substantially one or more organic solvents. Typical organic solvents are selected from C 1-10 -alkanes such as propane or butane, C 1-10 -alkanols such as methanol, ethanol or isopropanol, ethers such as diethyl ether, esters such as ethyl acetate, aromatics such as toluene, ketones such as acetone, or mixtures thereof.
In a preferred embodiment of the process according to the invention, in step i) a mixture comprising as component a) lithium sulfate, as component b) lactose and optionally as component c) carbon black is provided. In particular, in the spray-drying of dispersions, the use of ultrasound for mixing the components is preferred.
The spray-drying in step ii) of the process according to the invention can be carried out from dispersion or from solution of the precursor compounds used and, if appropriate, additives. The spray drying preferably takes place from aqueous dispersion or aqueous solution, particularly preferably from aqueous solution.
For example, spray drying can be achieved by using a BÜCHI 190 Mini Spray Dryers. For this purpose, the mixture to be dried from the components a), b) and optionally c) is passed to the nozzle via a peristaltic pump, wherein the conveying speed is usually constant in the range of 5-100 ml / min, preferably in the range of 5-25 ml / min. min, more preferably in the range of 10-15 mL / min. In the nozzle, the liquid is forced through the nozzle opening by means of the desired gas medium at a pressure of usually 1-10 bar, preferably 5-8 bar. The maximum spray flow can be set at about 800 Nl / h, although depending on the spray-drying apparatus used, other values may also be possible, which are usually between 200 and 1000 Nl / h, preferably between 400 and 800 Nl / h. In this case, a desired particle size and particle size distribution can be achieved in a suitable manner by setting the mentioned parameters, in particular by adjusting the gas pressure and the maximum spray flow. The temperature of the drying air is usually at a maximum of 220 ° C. The throughput for the drying air is usually at a maximum of 45 m 3 / h. Typical temperatures at the inlet are around 160 ° C and at the outlet around 70 ° C. The dried powder particles are typically separated from the drying air at the end of the apparatus via a cyclone and collected. However, depending on the spray-drying apparatus used, other values for the above-mentioned parameters may also be possible. In particular, the method according to the invention is also suitable for high-throughput processes and can therefore also be used with high-scale process control while adapting the parameters mentioned.
In contrast to known from the prior art method can be achieved by spray-drying advantageously a particularly homogeneous mixing of the components at the nanoscopic level. This also leads to an improved reaction in the subsequent step of the carbothermic reduction, whereby a homogeneous distribution of the lithium sulfide in the carbon matrix in the final product can be achieved. In particular, the spray-drying has the advantageous effect that the particle size can be controlled in a simple manner by suitable selection of the process conditions. As a result, spherical particles having a uniform particle size distribution can be achieved.
The particles obtained by spray-drying preferably have a particle size in the range from 0.1 to 100 .mu.m, preferably in the range from 0.5 to 50 .mu.m, particularly preferably in the range from 1.0 to 15 .mu.m. The particle size distribution d 90 is generally less than 50 μm, preferably less than 25 μm, particularly preferably less than 15 μm. Particle size and particle size distribution can be determined by laser diffractometry.
In a preferred embodiment of the process according to the invention, the thermal carbonation (step iii)) takes place directly after the spray drying (step ii)) of the mixture of components a), b) and optionally c). In an alternative embodiment, the method according to the invention between step ii) and step iii) may also comprise one or more intermediate steps.
Optionally, the product obtained by spray-drying may be further dried, the drying typically being carried out at temperatures between 100 ° C and 250 ° C, preferably between 120 ° C and 180 ° C.
Furthermore, spray drying may be followed by a step of particle coating. Here, the particles obtained in step ii) are subjected to a step of coating, for example by sol-gel method or chemical vapor deposition (CVD), in particular by ALD (atomic layer deposition).
In an alternative embodiment, the coating is carried out by spraying a sol into a fluidized bed reactor (spray coating).
In ALD, the spray-dried particles are usually evacuated in a vacuum space. The surface should be activated for this purpose, which can be done for example by adding water or by an oxidizing agent such as NO. Then, the layer precursor is introduced in predetermined amounts. Subsequently, the precursor is partially hydrolyzed or oxidized on the surface. The layer thicknesses can be controlled by the number of cycles in a suitable manner. Precursors may be sol-gel compounds such as silanes or titanium alkoxides. For example, trimethylaluminum is used for the oxidation.
Furthermore, the spray-dried particles can first be subjected to partial carbonation at a temperature of preferably 100-300 ° C. for a period of about 1-24 h, preferably 2-12 h.
Typically, partial carbonation of the spray dried particles is followed by a step of dispersing the particles in a suitable solvent, preferably water, optionally with the addition of one or more dispersants. Suitable solvents and dispersants are in particular selected from the solvents and dispersants mentioned above under step i). Furthermore, one or more soluble or insoluble additives can be added to the dispersion obtained, which are selected from the additives mentioned above under step i), carbon black being preferred as an additive. The dispersion obtained can then be subjected to a further spray drying. Alternatively, the solvent can also be removed by methods known in the art such as drying, evaporation, filtration or centrifugation.
Das Umsetzen erfolgt vorzugsweise bei einer Temperatur von 700°C bis 1000°C, besonders bevorzugt bei einer Temperatur von 750°C bis 900°C.Step iii) of the process of the present invention comprises the carbothermal reaction (carbothermization) of the particles obtained in step ii) or optionally after further intermediate steps at a temperature in the range from 600 ° C to 1200 ° C. The reaction is preferably carried out at a temperature of 700 ° C to 1000 ° C, more preferably at a temperature of 750 ° C to 900 ° C.
The reaction typically takes place under a protective gas atmosphere. Typical protective gas atmospheres are, for example, argon atmosphere or nitrogen atmosphere, preferably argon atmosphere. The argon atmosphere may further comprise from 1 vol.% To 10 vol.% Of a reactive gas component. The reactive gas component preferably comprises hydrogen and / or oxygen. A typical argon atmosphere comprises about 95% by volume of argon and about 5% by volume of hydrogen.
The carbothermic reaction is usually carried out for 30 to 240 minutes, preferably from 60 to 180 minutes. Particularly preferably, the carbothermization takes place in a rotary kiln.
Due to the small particle size and at the same time high porosity of the spherical particles obtained after spray drying, in the process of the present invention particles can be obtained even after the carbothermal reaction, which has a particularly high accessibility to the electrolyte exhibit. At the same time, nanoscopic lithium sulfide domains (crystallites) with a size of typically 10 to 1000 nm, preferably 20 to 260 nm, are present in the particles, as measured by X-ray diffractometry (XRD). The nanoscopic lithium sulfide domains can form a co-continuous, hierarchical porous network with the carbon matrix, thereby ensuring improved conductivity across the particles and excellent contacting of the lithium sulfide. The nanoscopic lithium sulfide domains also shorten the diffusion paths of the lithium ions, resulting in improved current carrying capacity of the resulting material compared to the lithium sulfide used in the prior art. The small crystallite sizes also lead by the large surface area obtained to a better contact and better Li 2 S utilization during cycling.
By the method according to the invention described particles are obtained, which have a suitable morphology, to be used directly in the electrode processing by slurry coating.
In addition, the homogeneous distribution of the carbon matrix in the lithium sulfide on the nanoscopic level which can be obtained in the process according to the invention makes it possible to optimize the electrochemical utilization of the lithium sulfide. In particular, it has been found by the present invention that the migration of soluble sulfur species due to their encapsulation in the carbon matrix is reduced, significantly increasing cycle stability.
The lithium sulfide-carbon composite obtainable by the inventive method can be preferably used as the cathode material in lithium batteries such as lithium batteries. Preferred is the use in lithium-sulfur batteries, more preferably in secondary lithium batteries. Particularly preferred here is the use in lithium metal batteries or lithium ion batteries, preferably in lithium ion batteries.
Surprisingly, according to the invention, a simple and efficient method for producing a particulate lithium sulfide-carbon composite has been provided, which makes it possible to control the particle size and particle morphology. Furthermore, it has been shown that a particulate lithium sulfide-carbon composite can be produced by the method, which has a homogeneous distribution of the carbon matrix in the lithium sulfide. The obtained particulate lithium sulfide-carbon composite has a high capacity with high cycle stability.
