Abstract
Description
The invention relates to a method for controlling a regeneration of a particulate filter arranged in an exhaust system of a spark-ignition internal combustion engine (gasoline engine). The invention further relates to an exhaust system, which is set up for carrying out the method.
In an effort to reduce pollutant emissions from internal combustion engines, usually motor measures are taken to reduce the raw emissions. In order to effectively convert the non-completely avoidable raw emissions post-engine, catalysts and other emission control components are also installed in the exhaust systems. Catalysts comprise an exhaust gas-permeable carrier, for example a ceramic monolith or metal carrier, with a coating containing a catalytically active material. The catalytic material is determined by the type of pollutants to be converted. Oxidation catalysts convert specifically unburned hydrocarbons (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO). Reduction catalysts that convert nitrogen oxides (NO x ) are used in diesel engines and predominantly lean-burn gasoline engines. In addition, three-way catalysts are known which combine the function of oxidation and reduction catalysts and thus convert all three components catalytically. Since three-way catalysts provide their conversion performance with respect to all three components only at a stoichiometric air ratio of λ = 1, they are mainly used in predominantly stoichiometric gasoline engines.
In addition to the gaseous pollutants in internal combustion engine exhaust gases, particulate components of the exhaust gas (soot) are also the focus of the exhaust aftertreatment technologies. This has long been true for diesel engines, while particle removal from engine exhaust gases has only recently been discussed. For example, the forthcoming European emission standard Euro 6 prescribes a limit value for the particle number (PN) for gasoline engines for the first time. This will have the consequence that in many motor vehicle models, the use of an Ottopartikelfilters (OPF) may be required. Essentially, gasoline filters have the same structure as diesel particulate filters (DPF).
Although to a much lesser extent than with diesel engines, a loading of the filter with soot (Ottoruss) also takes place when driving gasoline engines. So that the exhaust back pressure does not rise too far, the particle filter must be regenerated continuously or periodically. This is done in particular by way of thermal oxidation of the soot particles, which in addition to a sufficient temperature level at the same time the presence of a sufficient residual oxygen content in the exhaust gas is required. Since modern gasoline engines are normally operated without oxygen excess, namely at a substantially stoichiometric air ratio (λ = 1), special measures are required to provide the oxygen. Here, in particular, the lean adjustment of the engine (λ> 1) or the injection of secondary air into the exhaust system upstream of the particulate filter come into question. Advantage of the lean adjustment is that this method requires no additional components and can deliver sufficient oxygen levels in most operating points. However, the nitrogen oxides (NO x ) present in the lean exhaust gas can not be converted or not sufficiently converted by the three-way catalytic converter installed in stoichiometrically operated gasoline engines.
The present invention has for its object to provide a method for controlling a regeneration of a particulate filter of a gasoline engine, which is executable with a low design effort and also allows flexible control of the engine air ratio, for example, to protect against overheating.
The method according to the invention relates to the control of a regeneration of a particle filter (Otto particle filter) of an exhaust system of a spark-ignited internal combustion engine (gasoline engine), wherein the particle filter is followed by a catalyst designed at least for the conversion of nitrogen oxides (NO x ). During the regeneration of the particulate filter, the method sets an air ratio of the internal combustion engine to a lean lambda value of λ> 1 and supplies a hydrocarbon upstream of the downstream catalytic converter to the exhaust gas of the internal combustion engine so that nitrogen oxides are converted in the downstream catalytic converter.
The method according to the invention thus provides for the motorized provision of a sufficient oxygen content of the exhaust gas for thermal oxidative regeneration of the particulate filter. This engine method is supplemented by an extra-engineered measure, namely by the addition of hydrocarbon upstream of the downstream catalyst, thus allowing the conversion of nitrogen oxides of lean engine exhaust gas. In this way, all legally limited pollutants emitted during regeneration are effectively treated. In addition, the supply of hydrocarbon in the exhaust gas requires a relatively small additional design effort. Since the amount of reducing agent supplied for the conversion of nitrogen oxides in the downstream catalyst can be adapted to the engine operation, the method allows a significantly higher flexibility and control quality of the engine lambda control over known methods.
Preferably, a liquid hydrocarbon is supplied to the exhaust gas. Liquid hydrocarbons have the advantage over gaseous require no pressure vessels, and are also easier to pump and metered. The hydrocarbon supplied is preferably the fuel with which the internal combustion engine is operated. In this way, an additional tank for an additional fuel of the system is unnecessary.
Preferably, the catalyst formed at least for the conversion of nitrogen oxides is a three-way catalyst. This embodiment is advantageous in that in most cases a three-way catalytic converter is present in most of the stoichiometrically operated gasoline engines for exhaust gas purification. Thus, the catalytic conversion of the nitrogen oxides in the lean regeneration of the particulate filter requires no additional catalyst. Rather, the already built three-way catalytic converter covers the entire operating range of the internal combustion engine, including the regeneration phases.
The dimensioning of the supplied amount of hydrocarbon during the regeneration of the particulate filter is such that the downstream catalyst provides a desired conversion performance, at least with respect to the nitrogen oxides. In the case of a downstream three-way catalyst, the metered amount of hydrocarbon is preferably carried out so that before or in the three-way catalyst, a substantially stoichiometric air ratio is present. At a stoichiometric air ratio of λ = 1, three-way catalysts have their highest conversion performance with respect to the three limited gaseous exhaust gas components - hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO) and nitrogen oxides (NO x ) - on.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention, a control of the amount of hydrocarbon supplied by means of a catalyst downstream lambda probe. Thus, the control variable of the desired air ratio, for example, a stoichiometric air ratio, controlled by the amount of hydrocarbon as a control variable of the controlled system, wherein the actual actual air ratio is detected by the lambda probe and fed back. In principle, the lambda probe for the regulation of the air ratio can also be arranged between the feed point of the hydrocarbon and the catalyst. However, this is not preferred since it is difficult to achieve a homogeneous distribution of the hydrocarbon in the exhaust gas before the catalyst. Since the catalyst for the purpose of its monitoring by means of on-board diagnosis is often followed by a lambda probe anyway, this can be used without additional design effort in the inventive method for controlling the amount of hydrocarbon.
A pilot control of the amount of hydrocarbon supplied, for example, when the downstream lambda probe has not yet reached its operating temperature, or during the already taking place lambda control to specify a pilot value, preferably takes place depending on the parameters exhaust gas mass flow and lambda value downstream of the particulate filter. The lambda value downstream of the particulate filter is preferably determined with a further lambda probe, which is arranged behind the particulate filter but before the feed point of the hydrocarbon. The pre-control value of the amount of hydrocarbon is read in this case from stored maps that map the required amount of hydrocarbon depending on the exhaust gas mass flow and the lambda value, or by calculating the values of lambda and exhaust gas mass flow.
In a particularly preferred embodiment of the invention, a course of the regeneration of Particle filter on the basis of the present upstream and downstream of the particulate filter air conditions (lambda values) monitors. From the lambda signals before and after the particulate filter, which can be detected by appropriately installed lambda probes, and optionally additionally from the manipulated variable of the hydrocarbon metering, the dynamic conversion rate of soot particle oxidation and / or the total mass of particulates converted during regeneration and / or the onset and / or or determine the end of the regeneration. This makes it possible, for example after the end of regeneration a timely switching the internal combustion engine to its usual, in particular stoichiometric air ratio and avoids an unnecessarily long lean operation of the internal combustion engine.
In addition, the monitoring of the regeneration process allows the safe avoidance of conditions in which gaseous pollutants could leave the tailpipe of the exhaust system unconverted. Furthermore, the monitoring of the regeneration process allows the initiation of component protection measures even at high soot loadings at any time of the regeneration. Thus, it is provided in a preferred embodiment that when exceeding a critical conversion rate in the particulate filter during regeneration, the air ratio of the internal combustion engine is lowered, preferably to a stoichiometric lambda value of λ = 1. In this way, thermal damage to the particulate filter and / or the downstream catalyst due the high exothermicity of Partikelabbrands be prevented.
However, even at low conversion rates in the particulate filter during its regeneration high temperatures can occur in the downstream catalyst, which are generated by the amount of heat released in the catalytic conversion of the supplied hydrocarbons. In order to counteract such an overheating of the catalytic converter, a further advantageous embodiment of the invention provides that, when a critical temperature of the downstream catalytic converter is exceeded, the air ratio of the internal combustion engine is also lowered, in particular to a stoichiometric lambda value of λ = 1. Since the enrichment of the engine lambda value a reduction of the supplied hydrocarbons before the downstream catalyst triggers, thus the catalytic conversion in the catalyst and thus the amount of heat released are reduced.
Another aspect of the present invention relates to an exhaust system, which is set up for carrying out the method according to the invention. The exhaust system for a spark-ignition internal combustion engine comprises a particle filter and a downstream, at least for the conversion of nitrogen oxides formed catalyst, wherein upstream of the catalyst, a device for supplying hydrocarbon is arranged in the exhaust gas. The exhaust system further comprises a control device which is set up to carry out the method according to the invention. The control device is preferably integrated in the already existing engine control.
For controlling the method, the exhaust system preferably comprises one or more lambda probes arranged in the exhaust system, in particular a first lambda probe arranged upstream of the particulate filter and / or a second lambda probe arranged downstream of the particulate filter and upstream of the device for supplying the hydrocarbon and / or a third , Lambda probe arranged downstream of the catalytic converter. In principle, lambda sensors can be used as step response lambda probes or broadband lambda probes. Preferably, broadband lambda probes are used here. The advantage of such broadband lambda probes, which have a characteristic curve without a jump, is that they allow lambda control even in non-stoichiometric operation, while step response lambda probes deliver a usable signal only in the range around λ = 1.
The invention also relates to a vehicle having an internal combustion engine and a fluidically connected thereto exhaust system according to the present invention.
The internal combustion engine is preferably a substantially stoichiometrically operated gasoline engine.
