The invention relates to a method for exhaust aftertreatment of an internal combustion engine (10) at whose outlet (12) an exhaust system (20) is connected. Here, in the exhaust system (20) downstream of the outlet (12) close to the engine, a first catalyst (22), preferably a three-way catalyst (26) and downstream of the first catalyst (22), preferably in Unterbodenlage the motor vehicle, a second catalyst (24), in particular a four-way catalyst (28). In the flow direction of an exhaust gas through the exhaust system (20) downstream of the first catalyst (22) and upstream of the second catalyst (24) a discharge point (42) is provided for secondary air, wherein at the point of introduction (42) secondary air is blown into the exhaust system, if a substoichiometric exhaust gas is detected downstream of the first catalyst (22). In this case, the injection of secondary air is terminated when a stoichiometric exhaust gas is detected upstream of the first catalyst (22) or when a displacement of the exhaust air ratio lean in the exhaust system (20) downstream of the first catalyst (22) and upstream of the second catalyst (24 ) is detected.
The invention further relates to an exhaust aftertreatment system which is adapted to carry out such a method.
Description
The invention relates to an exhaust aftertreatment system for an internal combustion engine and to a method for the exhaust aftertreatment of an internal combustion engine according to the preambles of the independent claims.
The continuous tightening of the exhaust emission legislation places high demands on the vehicle manufacturers, which are solved by appropriate measures for the reduction of the engine raw emissions and by a corresponding exhaust aftertreatment. With the introduction of the legislative level EU6, a limit value for gasoline engines is prescribed for a number of particles, which in many cases necessitates the use of an Otto particle filter. For future emission standards, in addition to a further tightening of the limits, a restriction of further, not yet limited exhaust gas components such as ammonia or nitrous oxide is to be expected. Another topic under discussion is adapting the test cycles to real driving conditions, which means, among other things, greater driving dynamics. This increases the demands on the control quality of the mixture composition and places increased demands on the exhaust aftertreatment.
When a three-way catalyst is charged with a substoichiometric exhaust gas containing nitrogen monoxide NO, ammonia is formed. This is first oxidized by the stored oxygen in the washcoat of the three-way catalyst, but breaks through the catalyst as soon as the stored in the washcoat oxygen is consumed and no further oxygen for oxidation is present. If a high dynamic range is requested by an internal combustion engine, then, due to inaccurate charge detection and the sluggish gas system, there may be a substoichiometric deviation of the combustion chamber lambda from the desired value. In addition, in such highly dynamic phases an enrichment of the combustion mixture can be provided, which leads to a substoichiometric exhaust gas. If these deviations occur at an operating point with a high exhaust gas mass flow, the oxygen storage capacity OSC of the installed catalytic converters is eliminated very quickly and ammonia breakthroughs occur through the exhaust gas purification system. Even with a very accurate lambda control, this effect can not be avoided.
Exhaust gas aftertreatment system and methods for exhaust aftertreatment are known from the prior art.
A disadvantage of the known method, however, is that at high exhaust gas mass flows, the oxygen storage capacity of the catalysts is eliminated quickly and it comes to ammonia breakthroughs through the last catalyst, so that the ammonia is emitted to the environment.
The object of the invention is to reduce the ammonia emissions and in particular to avoid an ammonia breakthrough by the second catalyst at high dynamic operating points.
- Determining the exhaust air ratio λ 2 downstream of the first catalyst and upstream of the second catalyst,
- - Introducing secondary air into the exhaust system downstream of the first catalyst and upstream of the second catalyst, when in the exhaust system downstream of the first Catalyst a substoichiometric exhaust air ratio λ 2 is determined,
- - Disconnect the secondary air introduction, if in the exhaust system upstream of the first catalyst, a stoichiometric exhaust gas λ 1 = 1 or downstream of the inlet and upstream of the second catalyst, a shift of the exhaust air ratio λ 2 is detected in the lean direction.
By a method according to the invention, the formation of ammonia in the exhaust system can be prevented or at least greatly reduced since it is prevented that a catalyst is run over with a substoichiometric exhaust gas without sufficient oxygen at the following point in order to effectively convert the ammonia ,
The features listed in the dependent claims advantageous improvements and developments of the inventive method for exhaust aftertreatment for an internal combustion engine are possible.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention it is provided that the introduction of secondary air takes place through a secondary air valve, wherein the secondary air valve is opened and allows the introduction of secondary air into the exhaust system when a shift of the exhaust air ratio λ 2 is detected in the direction of rich. As a result, additional oxygen can be introduced for the conversion of ammonia into the exhaust system if, due to a dynamic driving state, a control deviation of the lambda control in the direction of the fuel is short-term and the ammonia formed would otherwise be emitted into the environment without additional measures.
In a further improvement of the method is provided that the introduction of secondary air into the exhaust system takes place only when the second catalyst has reached a threshold temperature. Since a minimum temperature is necessary for the conversion of ammonia to the second catalyst, it makes sense if the injection of secondary air takes place only when the second catalyst has reached this threshold temperature, since otherwise the additional oxygen can not be used for the conversion of ammonia.
In a preferred embodiment of the method it is provided that the threshold temperature is above a light-off temperature for the conversion of ammonia to the second catalyst. If the threshold temperature is above the light-off temperature of ammonia, in particular above a temperature of 350 ° C., then it is ensured that ammonia can be converted efficiently and the tailpipe emissions can be lowered.
In a further improvement of the method it is provided that the opening time of the secondary air valve corresponds approximately to the duration of the gas running time of the secondary air from a regeneration air blower to the second catalyst. In order to prevent a run over of the second catalyst with a lean exhaust gas and thus to cause an increase in nitrogen oxide emissions, it is desirable that the secondary air valve is opened only briefly and the amount of oxygen introduced remains limited. In this case, the oxygen storage capacity OSC of the second catalyst is filled up, without resulting in a poor breakdown by the second catalyst.
According to the invention, an exhaust aftertreatment system for an internal combustion engine with an exhaust system which is connected to an outlet of the internal combustion engine is proposed, wherein in the exhaust system downstream of the outlet close to the engine a first catalyst and downstream of the first catalyst, a second catalyst is arranged, downstream of the first catalyst and upstream the second catalyst is provided a secondary air intake point, and with a control unit which is adapted to perform a method according to the invention for exhaust aftertreatment, when a machine-readable program code is executed on this control unit. By an exhaust aftertreatment system according to the invention, the ammonia emissions of an internal combustion engine can be lowered in an effective and efficient manner. In this case, an ammonia breakthrough is prevented even in dynamic driving situations in which there is otherwise an ammonia breakthrough by the second catalyst, since the oxygen storage capacity of the second catalyst is completely eliminated and there is no oxygen to convert the ammonia formed.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention it is provided that the first catalyst is designed as a three-way catalyst and the second catalyst as a four-way catalyst. By a close-coupled three-way catalyst and a four-way catalyst in the underbody position of the motor vehicle, a highly efficient exhaust aftertreatment is possible. The temperatures at the four-way catalyst are lower in the underfloor position, thereby reducing thermal aging and associated oxygen storage capability reduction.
In an advantageous improvement of the invention it is provided that the exhaust aftertreatment system has a regeneration air system, which comprises a regeneration air blower which is connected via a first secondary air line to the point of introduction and via a second secondary air line to an outlet side cylinder head of the internal combustion engine, wherein in the first secondary air line, a first secondary air valve and in the second secondary air line, a second secondary air valve are arranged. By injecting secondary air into the exhaust-side cylinder head, the heating of the first catalyst in a cold start phase can be assisted. In this case, the internal combustion engine is operated with a substoichiometric, rich combustion air mixture and at the same time blown secondary air into the exhaust-side cylinder head. The unburned exhaust gas components react exothermically with the secondary air in the exhaust manifold. An additional implementation of the unburned exhaust gas components on the three-way catalyst takes place only when the three-way catalyst has reached its light-off temperature.
According to a preferred embodiment of the exhaust aftertreatment system, it is provided that a first lambda probe is arranged upstream of the first catalytic converter and a second lambda probe is arranged downstream of the inlet point and upstream of the second catalytic converter. As a result, a corresponding regulation of the combustion air ratio of the internal combustion engine and a supply of the exhaust aftertreatment system with regeneration air are possible with only two lambda probes.
In a further improvement of the invention it is provided that the discharge point is spaced from an inlet of the second catalytic converter, so that downstream of the inlet point and upstream of the second catalytic converter, a mixing section for mixing the exhaust gas with the fresh air from the regeneration air system results, wherein the mixing section has a length of at least 30 cm, preferably of at least 50 cm, more preferably of at least 80 cm. This makes it possible to mix the regeneration air with the exhaust gas before it enters the second catalytic converter, it being possible to dispense with an additional exhaust gas mixer and to achieve a substantially homogeneous exhaust gas. In addition, this distance leads to an advantage in the regulation, since first the oxygen storage capacity of the catalysts is utilized and only secondary air is blown when this storage capacity is exhausted. Thus, no secondary air is blown in at very short control deviations, whereby the risk of Magerdurchbruchs is prevented by the second catalyst due to an already maximally filled oxygen storage capacity OSC.
