Description
The present invention relates to an aqueous, age-resistant binder for mineral wool according to the preamble of
Here, a phenol-formaldehyde resin is the best-known binder of the prior art, preferably sprayed onto the fibers as an aqueous solution, or dispersion, wherein the phenol-formaldehyde resin then begins to polymerize due to the still relatively high temperatures of the fibers on the fiber surface and by the Polymerization process, the individual fibers, in particular at crossing points of fibers, interconnected, because the fibers are superimposed on a crossing point, there by solidified resin droplets more or less embedded and thus the mobility of the individual fibers is initially hindered each other and later during curing by means Hot gases, for example, in a tunnel oven, substantially completely prevented.

Mineral fiber insulation materials are also used to improve their handling properties with additives such. As dust binders, water repellents, lubricants and lubricants and other additives impregnated.
However, all the organic chemical binders for mineral wool hitherto used in the state of the art are - regardless of whether they contain / release formaldehyde or not in common - that the mineral wool products bound with the mentioned binders begin after a relatively short time in the case of exposure to the sun and / or air to age. This aging involves oxidative and photolytic or photochemical degradation processes of the binder plastic due to the action of atmospheric oxygen, humidity, large temperature fluctuations and UV exposure to sunlight.
The aging of mineral wool products due to the destruction of the structure of the cured binder resin droplets leads to a rapid deterioration of the mechanical properties of the affected mineral wool products. In particular, the bending and tensile strengths of mineral wool products are adversely affected. Such aging of the cured thermosetting binder components of bonded mineral wool can already show under unfavorable conditions during a short-term - only a few days lasting - external storage of mineral wool products on the site.
In contrast to thermosetting plastics, the stabilization of thermoplastics for mass-produced parts is a well-studied field of polymer chemistry and has contributed to the fact that some of these plastics were only technically useful.
Compounds such as butylated hydroxytoluene [BHT] and its derivatives are therefore widely used in the processing of these thermoplastics. The same can be said of the UV stabilizers. The methods for determining efficacy are well prepared and relatively simple, since the preparation of the test specimens is quite easy because of the thermoplasticity and sufficient for the measurement of a single specimen. The determination of the carbonyl index is because of the considerable stability of the degradation products formed a sure measure of the protective effect of an additive.
However, the established method for the evaluation of the effectiveness of an additive in thermoplastics and the prior art method is not suitable for thermosetting plastics, because neither the test methods for thermoplastic materials nor their chemical properties are transferable to thermosets.
Another problem in the stabilization of thermosets is briefly mentioned here.
Common to all protective materials for thermoplastics is their extreme poor solubility in water and hence their better solubility in the corresponding hydrophobic thermoplastics or their mono- and oligomers. Partial, the low solubility is also due to the mode of action, d. H. chemically, only a few structures are possible that meet exactly these requirements. To understand the mode of action of, for example, the BHT, it is sufficient to illustrate the decomposition mechanism in the polymer by oxygen. An antioxidant substance must be able to react with the radicals and the oxygen caused by the degradation. In this case, no compounds may arise, which in turn react with the polymer again. If, instead of BHT, simple phenol were used, then in the first step of this reaction, a reaction with the oxygen would likewise occur. The stabilizing effect would be short-lived, however, because the radical formed would react with the plastic due to its non-existent steric hindrance and would degrade it. In contrast, the BHT radical is easily hindered to react with polymer chains. Likewise, the sterically demanding substituents must not deactivate the phenolic OH group, for example by -I effects or by formation of stable hydrogen bonds. Therefore, it is easy to understand why such an effective stabilizer as BHT must have this structure, which in turn causes the even in the case of thermoplastic materials even desired poor solubility in water. Analogous statements can be made to the derivatives of triacetonamine, also known as HALS compounds [Hindered Amine Light Stabilizers] substances. It is therefore not surprising that only a few examples of water-soluble antioxidants are known. The most well-known of these is vitamin C. It is highly reactive and does not itself form any radicals. At the same time, the high level of reactivity prevents its use as a stabilizer in plastics, since its effect is only very short. Just consider that in the hardening furnaces partly temperatures of up to 280 ° C are used, but vitamin C is destroyed measurably fast even at room temperature.
Another example of a known water-soluble antioxidant is the following compound: Water-soluble vitamin E derivative
Their effectiveness is rather mediocre. When looking at the structure, the cause quickly becomes understandable. Although this derivative of vitamin E is extremely reactive with its OH group, it is partially blocked by hydrogen bonds in a polar solvent such as water. In addition, the low thermal stability of this compound, so that only a very short duration of action was observed here. Other compounds, such as condensation products of resorcinol with various aldehydes or ketones are completely insoluble in water and ineffective as an antioxidant.
Under ordinary conditions of everyday life, the thermosets commonly used in the art are stable enough to do without auxiliaries. However, as the requirements increase, these materials too quickly reach their limits. By way of example, reference is made here to the thermal and photochemical load for a visibly installed insulating material.
This manifests itself usually in both a discoloration and after prolonged exposure to a structural change of, for example, mineral wool products as a result of aging of the binder plastic. The exposed areas are increasingly brittle and smell out, which in long-term exposures, eg. B. months of storage of mineral wool products in the outdoor area to the above-mentioned degradation processes and thus can cause damage to the mineral wool products. This can lead to a significant decrease especially in the mechanical properties of mineral wool products damaged by oxygen, moisture and light exposure.
As a protective measure against light and other environmental conditions, the mineral wool products are usually coated with light- and oxygen-stabilized plastic films made of PE or PP from the manufacturer. However, for technical as well as economic reasons, the film overwrap usually has open areas in the atmospheric oxygen, moisture and light penetrate and can cause the above-described damage to the mineral wool products.
As soon as the mineral wool products are installed, the interior is usually given an effective light protection, whereas in the outdoor area it depends on the concrete individual case.
In any case, the aging of the binder plastic by oxygen exposure and moisture just after the installation of mineral wool products persists. In addition, extreme thermal loads can occur, such as in the roof area, where temperatures can fluctuate between -25 ° C in winter and + 70 ° C in summer.

Based on the described prior art, the aging of the binder plastic of mineral wool products by exposure to light, moisture and atmospheric oxygen, it is therefore an object of the present invention to provide mineral wool products available, which in the usual light, humidity and Luftsauerstoffexpositionen such products only one experience low levels of damage from aging.

the UV stabilizer is selected from the group consisting of: 2- (2H-benzotriazol-2-yl) -4-methyl- (n) -dodecylphenol, isomers of 2- (2H-benzotriazol-2-yl) -4- methyl (n) -tetracosylphenol, isomers of 2- (2H-benzotriazol-2-yl) -4-methyl- (n) -didodecylphenol (n = 5 or 6); 2,2,4,4-tetramethyl-2-oxa-3,20-diazadispiro- (5.1.11.2) -heneicosan-21-one; and 2-hydroxy-4-n-octoxy-benzophenone; as well as their mixtures.
A preferred binder is one in which the mass ratio of antioxidant to UV stabilizer is 2: 1 to 3: 1.
In the context of the present invention it is preferred that the phenol-formaldehyde resin binder or the urea-modified phenol-formaldehyde resin binder has at most about 8% by mass, in particular less than about 2% by mass, preferably less than about 1% by mass, based on the total mass of the aqueous Phenolformaldehydharzbindemittels, free formaldehyde contains.
It is a preferred embodiment of the present invention, when antioxidant and UV stabilizer together have a concentration of about 0.1 to 5 mass%, based on the solids content of the binder base, in particular 0.1 to 1 mass%, preferably about 0.2% by mass, based on the solids content of the binder base.
A bound with the binder according to the invention mineral wool product is resistant to aging for up to six months in free storage and changes its physical and chemical properties over this period hardly.
However, unprotected mineral wool products of the prior art may already be unusable after this time against environmental influences such as UV irradiation by sunlight and aggressive oxidation processes promoted or promoted by moisture, since the binder is destroyed by the chemical and physical processes mentioned and thus the mechanical properties Tensile and bending strengths are gradually lost.
Further advantages and features of the present invention will become apparent from the description of embodiments and from the drawing.

First of all, the methods used are described using the example of a particularly difficult to stabilize phenol-formaldehyde-urea resin [PFU resin]. The knowledge gained is then transferred to other thermoset plastic classes.
A commercially available sodium catalyzed phenol-formaldehyde resin [PF resin] was used in water, which was brought to a pH of 7.4 after its preparation with sulfuric acid. The resin was mixed with urea in a ratio of 70:30 resin: urea.
Herstellung der Grundharzmasse: Preparation of the basic resin composition:
Das PFU Harz wurde vor seiner Härtung mit Ammoniumsulfat, Ammoniak und 3-Aminopropyltriethoxysilan im prozentualen Verhältnis Festharz: (NH4)2SO4:NH3:Silan = 100:1:0,5:0,5 vermischt. Angestrebt wurde ein Feststoffgehalt von 50 Masse-%.Prior to its cure, the PFU resin was mixed with ammonium sulfate, ammonia and 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane in the ratio solid resin: (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 : NH 3 : silane = 100: 1: 0.5: 0.5. The aim was a solids content of 50% by mass.
Preparation of the Base Resin Powder: 100 g of the prepared resin were cured at 100 ° C for 7 h to prevent thermal damage. The plastic body was coarsely crushed and dried at 100 ° C to constant weight or completely cured. The material thus obtained was pulverized by means of a disk vibration mill for 15 s and the 100 μm particle size was separated by means of a fractionating sieve. Finer fractions were discarded, coarse re-powdered and fractionated. The use of powders of a defined particle size distribution is compelling necessary because only dense specimens are obtained with finer powders in the later step of specimen production. Too coarse powders effectively prevent a good distribution of the insoluble additive.

The preliminary experiments with different pairs of antioxidant and UV stabilizer can be summarized as follows. A 1: 1 ratio can be antagonistic or synergistic. A ratio of antioxidant: UV stabilizer of 1: 2 is always antagonistic.
Thus, in order to be able to safely exclude a switch to an antagonistic effect of antioxidant and UV stabilizer, the antioxidant must always be present in an excess.
The results of these experiments can be summarized to the following very simple rule. If a thermoset material is to be protected against radical degradation, only synergistic pairs of antioxidant and UV stabilizer will exhibit a sufficiently large effect if the antioxidant is present in excess. An excess of UV stabilizer immediately leads to antagonistic systems. A large excess of antioxidant, in this example 10: 1 based on solid resin, also leads to a destruction of the synergistic effect. The aging characteristics approach that of the system containing only antioxidant. The mere stabilization with an antioxidant is possible for a short time, but not sufficient for most applications of thermosetting plastics. Since the degradation kinetics of antioxidant and UV stabilizer can differ in the respective medium, antagonistic systems are obtained at a higher rate of degradation of the antioxidant. In the context of the present invention, two- to threefold excesses of the antioxidant to the UV stabilizer have proven to be the most expedient and are thus preferred.
50 g Additiv, 4,5 g Dispersionshilfsmittel, 0,2 g Schutzkolloid, 45,3 g Wasser, 0,01 g EntschäumerThe knowledge gained with the PFU resin can be easily transferred to other resin systems. In contrast to the experiments described above, these experiments were geared to a higher practical relevance. Since thermosetting resins are usually aqueous systems, the respective additives were converted into aqueous dispersions. For example, a formulation generally applicable for the purposes of the present invention has the following composition:
50 g of additive, 4.5 g of dispersion aid, 0.2 g of protective colloid, 45.3 g of water, 0.01 g of defoamer
