Description
Thermoplastic molding compounds are increasingly being used for production instead of metals used by various molded parts, which, however, have the disadvantage that they are not flame-resistant are. In particular, molding compositions based on polyolefins have only a low level of flame resistance. Due to the deformation resistance of polyolefins, especially polypropylene and propylene copolymers, however, one is looking for ways to make such molding compositions flame-resistant. The same aspirations apply, of course also in the case of other thermoplastic polymers such as polystyrene or polyamides.
It is already known to make thermoplastic polymeric materials flame retardant to a certain extent make by incorporating various additives, the most commonly used halogenated Are hydrocarbons and antimony trioxide. Phosphorus has also been used for the same purpose. and boron compounds are used. Combinations of antimony trioxide and halogenated hydrocarbons exert a synergistic effect in terms of suppressing the further burning of thermoplastics polymeric materials and are therefore used more frequently (see. GB-PS 11 58 163).
In order to achieve somewhat satisfactory results, however, the additives mentioned must be in large amounts are used, with the result that the physical properties of the Thermoplastic mass produced objects will deteriorate, such as the flexural strength at elevated temperatures as well as the tensile strength, flexural strength and impact resistance. In addition, the additives mentioned are expensive, so that the production costs of thermoplastic Mass produced moldings are not insignificant. Furthermore, the known deteriorate Additives improve the weather resistance and, in addition, wilt by the effects of the weather, what in turn, the flame resistance deteriorates.
It is known to reinforce thermoplastic molding compositions with glass fibers. Are optical fibers in such masses incorporated, which have been mixed with the additives mentioned for flame retardancy are, you can improve the mechanical properties mentioned, but only to the detriment of Increase in prime costs.
Diese Aufgabe wird durch die Erfindung gemäß demThe invention has therefore set itself the task of creating flame-resistant molding compositions which no longer have the disadvantages outlined above.
This object is achieved by the invention according to the
ι ο kennzeichnenden Teil des Patentanspruchs gelöstι ο characterizing part of the claim solved
Die Erfindung beruht auf der Erkenntnis, daß durch die Zumengung von Asbestfasern des Chrysotiltvps (im Unterschied zu Fasern des Anthophyllittyps, Amoxidtyps und Tremolittyps) in der beanspruchten Menge dieThe invention is based on the knowledge that the addition of asbestos fibers of the chrysotiltvps (im Difference to fibers of the anthophyllite type, amoxide type and tremolite type) in the claimed amount
Amount of conventional flame retardant additives necessary to achieve a desired level Flame resistance is required can be reduced considerably. This has considerable advantages. Quite apart from that. the low cost of asbestos fiber compared to the cost of conventional flame-retardant additives, the use of such fibers enables the retention of sometimes even improving the desired mechanical properties of objects made from the molding compositions are obtained.
Particularly important is the fact that the asbestos fibers that Dripping of burning fragments from a shaped object prevents what is then from is of particular importance when a burning object is above flammable materials This finding is also not suggested by the presentation from "High Molecular Report" 4530/69, where it is only stated that asbestos has an increased advantage over glass fibers
Keiner dieserStrength, better chemical resistance, high thermal resistance and with short fiber Has lower price asbestos. It is also stated that the electrical properties of Asbestos and its processability are worse and fluctuations in quality are greater. As possible uses the production of waterproof panels, tiles, anti-corrosive materials, Brake pads, laminates with thermoplastics and thermosetting resins are described. None of these
Durch die Erfindung wird daher der Vorteil erzielt,Such uses include the need to add conventional flame retardant additives such as antimony trioxide or a halogenated hydrocarbon.
The invention therefore achieves the advantage

This advantage is surprising in that the flame resistance of thermoplastic materials by incorporating chrysotile asbestos fibers into
Abwesenheit eines flammfestmachenden Additivs im allgemeineil nicht besonders stark beeinflußt wird und bei bestimmten thermoplastischen Polymerisaten, die verhältnismäßig niedrig viskose Schmelzen liefern, beispielsweise Polyamiden, die Einmengung von Chrysotilasbestfasern allein die Feuerbeständigkeit der Polymerisate verschlechtertThe absence of a flame retardant additive is generally not particularly affected and in the case of certain thermoplastic polymers that produce relatively low-viscosity melts, for example polyamides, the incorporation of chrysotile asbestos fibers alone increase the fire resistance of the Polymers deteriorated
Because chrysotile asbestos fibers are very inexpensive, while the well-known flame retardant additives are very expensive is the fact that the chrysotile asbestos fibers are related to the flame retardant additives the flame retardancy exert a synergistic effect, of great importance. Even if the crowd of the asbestos fibers, which are used to achieve a certain degree of flame resistance, considerably greater is the saving in the required amount of the flame-retardant additive, but are nevertheless the end products are generally cheaper.
The asbestos fibers used according to the invention are also of considerable importance as they unlike the flame retardant additives improve the mechanical properties of the materials. So by the addition of the asbestos fibers any adverse effect that the flame retardant Apply additives to the mechanical properties, at least in a balanced way. Depending on the amount of fiber the mechanical properties of the molding compounds can even be considerably better than the properties of the thermoplastic polymers themselves. The chrysotile asbestos fibers stand out in this regard In contrast to glass fibers, which together with flame retardant additives do not have a synergistic effect condition. This behavior is surprising in that glass fibers as well as chrysotile asbestos fibers in the If they are used alone in thermoplastic materials, generally only a small amount Have an influence on the flame resistance and, like the asbestos fibers, tend to have the Flame resistance of certain thermoplastic polymers, for example those that are relatively deliver low viscosity melts, deteriorate.
In addition, the addition of chrysotile asbestos fibers has the advantage that the flow properties of the Molding compositions under deformation conditions are less affected by the flame-retardant additives will. In addition, with decreasing content of added flame-retardant additives the less the probability that this will be caused by the weather be leached out.
After their preparation, the compositions according to the invention are usually in the form of particles. she can be produced by known methods, for example by mixing a melt of the respective polymer with the asbestos fibers and the additive in the extruder and granulating or pelletizing of the extrudate. The molding compositions can be used to produce molded articles or extruded articles can be used.
Da es im Hinblick auf dieThe amount of polymer in the flame-retardant molding compositions according to the invention is between 40 and 90 % By weight, the amount of asbestos fibers between 5 and 40% by weight and the amount of the flame retardant Additive between 2.5 and 20% by weight. The amounts of the additives fluctuate within these quantity ranges depending on the amount of asbestos fibers to achieve a flame-resistant molding compound with a certain flame resistance. As it is with regard to the
mechanischen Eigenschaften häufig zweckmäßig ist, beträchtliche Mengen an Asbestfasern von 20 Gew.-% oder mehr einzusetzen, kann die Menge des Additivs zur Erzielung einer gewünschten Flammfestigkeit recht niedrig sein und beispielsweise nur 5 bis 10 Gew.-% betragen.mechanical properties is often appropriate, considerable amounts of asbestos fibers of 20 wt .-% or more, the amount of the additive can be used to achieve a desired flame retardancy be low and for example only 5 to 10 wt .-%.
The molding compositions according to the invention can contain one or more flame-retardant additives be. Mixtures of antimony trioxide and halogenated hydrocarbons are expediently used A mixture of antimony trioxide and decabromodiphenyl is particularly advantageous a mixture of 2 parts by weight of decabromodiphenyl per part by weight of antimony trioxide. Instead of the antimony trioxide Other flame retardant additives can also be used, such as boron and phosphorus compounds.
The compositions can contain one or more thermoplastic polymers, in addition conventional ones Additives such as stabilizers for the polymer, fillers and pigments, of course, in addition to the flame retardant additives and the asbestos fibers.
The degree of burning of plastics can be determined according to the British Standard 2782 (1970) method50A will. To carry out this test method, a rod made of the material to be tested is also used a width of 13 mm, a length of 150 mm and a thickness of 1.5 to 3.0 mm are used. Two lines on a surface of the rod are scratched, the first line 25 mm from one rod end and the second Pulled 127 mm from the same end of the rod. The pilot flame is attached to this end of the rod. The rod is clamped in such a way that its length extends in the horizontal direction and its width extends by 45 ° is inclined to the horizontal. The flame is left to act for 10 minutes.
If the test method described above burns the material after it has been exposed to the Ignition flame has not been exposed to the first marking and takes place after removing the Flame does not continue to burn for more than 5 seconds, then the material can be classified as "self-extinguishing" classify. If the material continues to burn beyond the first mark, it will reach the flame not the second mark, the material is said to be "resistant to flame spread". If the material continues to burn beyond the second mark, the rate of fire is in mm measured per minute. According to the invention particularly advantageous masses are after performing the test method described above as either "self-extinguishing" or "resistant to a Flame spread «classified.
The test method described above was used in carrying out the following examples. at During the tests, it was also observed whether or not the fragments that drip from the test material burned burned, and what happened to the fragments and the rest of the staff, if any Drain the fragments. With regard to the spread of a fire, the dripping of burning represents Fragments represent a significant element of danger. The examples show that the chrysotile asbestos fibers are glass fibers are not only significant in terms of flame resistance, but also superior properties with regard to the change in the dripping of burning fragments.

*) Die Massen (a), (b), (e) und (f) verlöschten, nachdem der brennende Teil abgetropft war.*) The masses (a), (b), (e) and (f) went out after the burning part had dripped off.
Die Ergebnisse sind in den Tabellen 11 und 12 zusammengestelltIn this case a number of tests were carried out, varying the chrysotile asbestos content and the content of fire retardant additive mixture in each polymer. It was possible from the interpolate the additive content obtained in each polymer and with each asbestos content was required to confer a self-extinguishing ability. The results are in Tables 11 and 12 compiled
