Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a method for drying a gas.
Before transporting, for example, natural gas through pipelines, the natural gas must be dried to such an extent that it can not lead to the formation of liquid water in the pipelines (below the dew point). This is the only way to ensure that snowy, solid gas hydrates do not form, which could block the pipes. Other gas streams must be dried, such. For example, the feed air from air separation plants to prevent or minimize ice formation in the heat exchangers. Furthermore, portions of water present in process gases may adversely affect the further processing thereof, for example, if, in a catalytic process, the catalyst is unstable to water as the standard catalyst in ammonia synthesis.
In all the above cases, therefore, a minimization of the water vapor content for the economic and efficient implementation of the gas transport or for the further processing of a gas is required.
Gas drying in industrial technology essentially follows the following three principles: (1) cooling the entire gas stream and condensing out the water vapor; (2) Adsorption of water vapor on solids; (3) the absorption of the water vapor in suitable liquids e.g. B. by gas scrubbing.
However, a disadvantage of the use of glycols as drying agents in the drying of gases is, for example, their regeneration. During regeneration, it must be ensured, among other things, that with diethylene glycol (DEG) a temperature of 175 ° C. is not exceeded in order to ensure a 98% regeneration of the DEG, since otherwise the decomposition of this diol begins. The same applies to triethylene glycol (TEG), except that the maximum regeneration temperature here is 190 ° C.
It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a process for drying a gas using a desiccant which can be substantially completely regenerated.
- - Contacting a gas containing water vapor, with an ionic liquid, wherein water vapor of the gas is absorbed by the ionic liquid.
Surprisingly, it has been found that ionic liquids are very well suited for the drying of gases and that after their use they are largely completely dewatered under relatively mild conditions, ie. H. Regenerate for a new use.
Moreover, in the distillative regeneration of an ionic liquid hardly any of the same is lost, since ionic liquids on the one hand have a very low vapor pressure and on the other hand, even at relatively high temperatures are chemically resistant to, for example, atmospheric oxygen and CO 2 .
The present invention relates to a process for drying a gas with an ionic liquid which acts as a drying agent. In the process, water contained in the gas is at least partially removed by extraction with the ionic liquid.
The drying agent, or in other words the absorption or extraction agent, is an ionic one in the case of the present invention Liquid (English: ionic liquid). Ionic liquids are known in the art. In the prior art, as used in the context of the present invention, the expression "ionic liquid" means salts which have a melting point of less than 100 ° C. Preferred ionic liquids according to the invention are corresponding salts which are formed from an organic cation and an inorganic or organic anion.
Beispiele für Kationen von ionischen Flüssigkeiten sind Imidazolium-, Pyridinium-, Pyrrolidinium-, Pyridinium-, Guanidinium-, Uronium-, Thiouronium-, Piperidinium-, Morpholinium-, Ammonium- und Phosphonium-Kationen, die insbesondere alkyliert sein können. Als Anionen kommen insbesondere Halogenide und komplexere Ionen wie Tetrafluoroborat, Trifluoracetat, Trifluormethansulfonat, Hexafluorophosphat Phosphinate und Tosylate in Frage. Auch organische Anionen wie beispielsweise Imide, Amide, Alkylsulfonate, Alkylsulfate und Mono- bzw. Dialkylphosphate können Bestandteil von ionischen Flüssigkeiten sein.Examples of cations of ionic liquids are imidazolium, pyridinium, pyrrolidinium, pyridinium, guanidinium, uronium, thiouronium, piperidinium, morpholinium, ammonium and phosphonium cations, which may in particular be alkylated. Suitable anions are in particular halides and more complex ions such as tetrafluoroborate, trifluoroacetate, trifluoromethanesulfonate, hexafluorophosphate phosphinates and tosylates. Organic anions such as imides, amides, alkyl sulfonates, alkyl sulfates and mono- or dialkyl phosphates may also be part of ionic liquids.
According to the invention, it is also possible to use mixtures of different ionic liquids.
The process according to the invention is carried out under process conditions in which the ionic liquid is in liquid form. In addition, the process is carried out under process conditions in which the ionic liquid is at least partially miscible with water and preferably in any ratio.
According to a preferred embodiment of the method according to the invention, it is provided that the method is carried out continuously. In a continuous process, a gas stream to be dried is contacted with an ionic liquid, e.g. B. in a gas washing device.
Gas scrubbers, also referred to in the art as gas scrubbers, are devices in which a gas stream is contacted with a liquid stream (here: ionic liquid) to receive components of the gas stream into the liquid. The passing components of the gas stream may be either solid or liquid or gaseous. Commonly known designs of gas scrubbers in the prior art are often divided into six areas: 1) the bottom of the scrubber in which the scrubbing liquid collects and from which it is withdrawn; 2) the gas inlet, by means of which the gas is abandoned and introduced by internals a uniform load on the interior of the gas washing device; 3) the contact section in which the washing out of the components to be washed out in the gas stream takes place; 4) the washing liquid task in which the washing liquid is abandoned and distributed; 5) the drip, by means of which entrained components of the scrubbing liquid are separated; 6) the head of the gas scrubber over which the "cleaned" gas stream exits the scrubber.
The efficiency of a gas scrubber is determined in particular by the contact time, the size of the surface of the scrubbing liquid, the diffusion distance in the gas phase and by the concentration difference between the gas phase and the liquid phase. The efficiency of a gas scrubber can therefore be increased by a longer residence time, maximizing the surface of the scrubbing liquid, a stronger mixing of the two phases or by lowering the concentration of the medium to be washed out in the liquid phase z. B. by an increased use of washing liquid.
According to a preferred embodiment of the method according to the invention, the contacting of the gas to be dried with the ionic liquid takes place by introducing the gas into a gas washing device operating with an ionic liquid as a detergent (here desiccant). Gas scrubbers can be set up for any separation purposes individually with technically simple means, whereby the possibility of a substantially complete collection of the water from the gas by means of the ionic liquid is given with technically simple and therefore cost-effective means.
The contacting of the gas to be dried with the ionic liquid may, for example, be carried out in a container, preferably in a tube, the container being filled with fillers which are sprinkled therewith to provide a relatively large surface area of the ionic liquid. This ensures a largely complete collection of the water from the gas to be dried at relatively short contact times. Accordingly, the gas washing device according to a further preferred embodiment of the method according to the invention comprises a container filled with packing, preferably a tube, wherein the packing are sprinkled with the ionic liquid.
As an alternative or in addition to the container filled with packing bodies, according to a further preferred embodiment of the method according to the invention, it may be provided that the gas washing device has a container with the ionic liquid filled container, preferably a tube. By passing the gas to be dried through the ionic liquid through the possibility of a substantially complete separation of the water contained in the gas in procedurally simple and thus cost-effective manner is ensured.
In order to ensure the largest possible surface of the ionic liquid and, consequently, a substantially complete separation of the water from the gas at relatively short contact times, is provided according to a further preferred embodiment of the method according to the invention that the gas to be dried is bubbled into the ionic liquid ,
According to a further preferred embodiment of the method according to the invention, it is provided that the gas is a hydrocarbon-containing gas, preferably a natural gas. Hydrocarbon-containing gas streams are generally streams which are run in high-throughput industrial processes in which the process according to the invention can be used particularly effectively.
According to a further preferred embodiment of the method according to the invention, it is provided that the ionic liquid is deposited on a carrier. Supported ionic liquid is known in the literature as "SILP" (supported ionic liquid). As a carrier, for example, a honeycomb body, for. As ceramic or sheet metal, or a powdery porous ceramic can be used. The immobilized ionic liquid can be handled easily. When the ionic liquid is immobilized on a honeycomb body, the gas to be dried can be easily passed through the honeycomb body. When a powdery porous ceramic is used as a carrier, relatively large surfaces of ionic liquid can be obtained, which promotes the efficiency of drying. If the supported ionic liquid is a free-flowing dry powder, the gas stream to be dried can simply be passed through a bed of powder.
- Removing water from the ionic liquid by absorbing water vapor in the ionic liquid.
The inventive method is used for the regeneration of the ionic liquid. In the aforementioned context, it is further preferred according to the invention that the removal of the water from the ionic liquid takes place by means of distillation.
According to a particularly preferred embodiment of the method according to the invention, it is provided that the activity coefficient of the water for the binary system of the ionic liquid and water is less than 1. An ionic liquid is particularly suitable for efficient gas drying, if the activity coefficient of the water according to the extended Raoult's law for the binary system of the ionic liquid and water used is particularly small. Thus, particularly suitable for the present invention are those ionic liquids which have an activity coefficient of water (γ H2O ) for the binary system of the ionic liquid and water of less than 1 under the particular conditions under which the method according to the invention is carried out.
In the above formula γ H2O denotes the activity coefficient of water in the binary system ionic liquid and water, x H2O is the molar fraction of water in the binary system, p H2O, sat denotes the saturated steam pressure of pure water and p H2O is the vapor pressure of water over the binary system.
According to a particularly preferred embodiment of the method according to the invention, it is provided that the ionic liquid is selected from the group consisting of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazoliumethylsulfat ([EMIM] [EtSO 4 ]), 1-butyl-3-methylimidzoliumbistrifluoromethanesulfonimide ([BMIM ] [ETA]), 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([EMIM] [Cl]], 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium methyl sulfonate ([EMIM] [MeSO 3 ]), and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium diethyl phosphate ( [EMIM] [Et 2 PO 4 ]).
The present invention further relates to the use of an ionic liquid for drying a gas.
The following description of a preferred embodiment of the method according to the invention is used in conjunction with the drawings to explain the invention.

- 1. The regeneration of water / glycol mixtures is carried out in the distillation under atmospheric pressure at temperatures of up to 175 ° C for DEG and 190 ° C for TEG, otherwise TEG and DEG are thermally decomposed (
Schmidt, 1970 - 2. Although DEG and TEG are relatively low volatile, loss due to evaporation or evaporation of glycols is unavoidable. In contrast, evaporation and evaporation losses are not expected in the IL used, since this has an extremely low vapor pressure.
- 3. DEG and TEG are oxidized by oxygen, especially at elevated temperatures (eg formic acid). By absorption of acid formers (CO 2 , H 2 S), this decomposition reaction is enhanced. In contrast, when stripping ionic fluids with up to 150 ° C hot air, no oxygen attack on the ionic fluid used has been reported [EMIM] [EtSO 4 ] (
Eat, 2006 - 4. TEG has a fairly high viscosity of 49 mPa s (at 20 ° C), which is about 50 times higher than that of water. The ionic liquids [EMIM] [EtSO 4 ] have even higher viscosities in pure form (120 mPa s for [EMIM] [EtSO 4 ]). However, the viscosity drops very much (practically exponentially) with the water content. Viscosity values which are below the viscosity of TEG are achieved even at low water contents of the ionic liquid (4% by weight), which is advantageous in view of the required pumping capacity and the intensity of the mass transfer in the absorption column.
