Description
The invention relates to a micro-porous hydrophobic polyorganosilane, a process for its preparation and its use. The invention is particularly suitable for use in gas storage, air purification, fuel recovery, odor minimization.
The range of microporous materials is very extensive. Activated carbons have been known for a long time and offer a variety of possible applications, above all as adsorbents in the fields of chemistry, medicine, water and wastewater treatment, etc.
Another very large and long-known class are the zeolites, crystalline aluminosilicates with micropores and great structural diversity. Zeolites are used commercially as molecular sieves for gas separation and as solid catalysts in heterogeneous catalysis.

Fourier JH et al. 2003 (Can. J. Chem., 81: 376-380) disclose the synthesis of tetraphenylmethane and tetraphenylsilane derivatives to be used as building blocks for the synthesis of tetrahedral molecules.
Liu XM et al. 2005 (Macromolecules 38, 4157-4168) disclose blue to red light emitting polyorganosilanes made via Suzuki coupling for optoelectronic applications.
PIMs (Polymers of Intrinsic Microporosity). B. Wasserstoff. Trip-PIM (BET-Oberfläche: 1064 m2g–1) adsorbiert bei einem Druck von 1 bar und einer Temperatur von 77 K 1,65 Gew.-% und bei 10 bar und 77 K 2,71 Gew.-% Wasserstoff (Ghanem et al. Chem. Commun. 2007, 67–69).In 2005, Cote et al. Covalent-Organic Frameworks (COFs, Science 2005, 310, 1166-70) are the first porous, covalent organic network compounds, which, like the MOFs, are ordered and microporous with a high specific surface area. The COFs have only covalent bonds, leading to a whole new set of properties and no metal-based toxic properties, as the COFs are metal-free A very new class of microporous compounds are the so-called PIMs (Polymers of Intrinsic Microporosity These have interesting properties, such as low intrinsic density, and are composed of light elements such as C, H, O, and N. This is a great advantage over the metal atom containing MOFs, which are chemically homogeneous, which makes them the most active carbons superior, have high thermal and chemical stability and are synthetically reproducible he PIMs on attractive materials for the gas storage of z. B. hydrogen. Trip-PIM (BET surface: 1064 m 2 g -1 ) adsorbs 1.65% by weight at a pressure of 1 bar and a temperature of 77 K and 2.71% by weight of hydrogen at 10 bar and 77 K (Ghanem et al., Chem. Commun., 2007, 67-69).
Chem., 2008, 120, 456–458).The current state of the art of microporous polymers is summarized by C. Weder in a recent review article (Angew Chem, 2008, 120, 456-458).
The object underlying the present invention is to provide a new porous material which is particularly suitable as an adsorption material. Furthermore, the material should have a high thermal and chemical stability, a good gas storage capacity and a lower specific density.
The object is achieved according to the invention by a crosslinked, porous polymer having a specific surface area (BET) of more than 500 m 2 g -1 and up to 3000 m 2 g -1 , which contains silicon atoms which are covalently linked to each other by four organic linker molecules L. wherein L is a substituted or unsubstituted cyclic alkyl radical having 5 to 50 carbon atoms or a substituted or unsubstituted aryl radical having 5 to 50 carbon atoms, wherein the aryl radical preferably contains at least one phenyl group.
Das erfindungsgemäße Polymer enthält damit Struktureinheiten gemäß der allgemeinen Formel 1: The polymer according to the invention thus contains structural units according to the general formula 1:
The linker molecules L are preferably with n - 1 further silicon atoms or optionally also heteroatoms such. As boron, nitrogen, phosphorus connected. n is an integer from 2 to 6, preferably 2, 3 or 4.
The linker molecules L therefore have n (at least 2) binding sites, which allow the covalent linkage with silicon atoms and optionally also the above-mentioned heteroatoms.
The polymer according to the invention thus contains, for n = 2, preferably structural units according to the
B. Bor, Stickstoff, Phosphor enthalten. In the two formulas, the asterisks * are each for linking with further structural units, the L, Si and optionally heteroatoms, such as. As boron, nitrogen, phosphorus.
Preferably, in these further structural units, the silicon atoms are each again connected to 4 organic linker L. The optionally present boron, nitrogen or phosphorus atoms are correspondingly connected to 3 organic linker L.
Preferably at least 60%, preferably 80%, more preferably more than 95% or even 100% of the silicon atoms contained in the polymer according to the invention are covalently linked to four organic linker molecules L. Preferably, at least 60%, preferably 80%, more preferably more than 95% or even 100% of the linker molecules L present in the polymer according to the invention are covalently bonded to at least 2 silicon atoms.
Dadurch entstehen z. B. Struktureinheiten, wie in Formel 4 anhand des bevorzugten erfindungsgemäßen Polymers Poly(1,4-phenylen)silan (L = Phenylen) veranschaulicht wird: Formel 4: Schema möglicher nichtverknüpfenden Gruppen in Poly(1,4-phenylen)silan However, in the polymer according to the invention occasionally hydroxy groups and aliphatic and aromatic radicals which have no linking function may be present due to the synthesis route have present. This creates z. Structural units, as illustrated in
Der Si-H-Bindungsanteil ist bevorzugt 0% bis 5%, bevorzugt unter 1%.In the polymer according to the invention, at most 30%, more preferably at most 10%, of the silicon atoms are preferably covalently bonded to oxygen or aliphatic groups (such as butyl). Due to the manufacturing method, the polymer preferably contains no or almost no Si-Si bonds. The Si-Si bond fraction is preferably 0% to 5%, preferably less than 1%. Due to the method of preparation, the polymer preferably contains no or virtually no Si-H bonds. The Si-H bond fraction is preferably 0% to 5%, preferably less than 1%.
Diese Anteile sind dabei insbesondere abhängig von der Größe der Linker L.The proportion of hydrogen is preferably between 2 wt .-% and 10 wt .-%, more preferably above 4 wt .-% and more preferably below 6 wt .-%. These proportions are dependent in particular on the size of the linker L.
In the polymer according to the invention optionally (in addition to C, Si, O and H) further atoms, in particular boron, nitrogen, germanium and phosphorus can be contained. The proportion of further atoms is preferably between 0% and 50% by weight, more preferably above 0% by weight and more preferably below 10% by weight.
The silicon atoms are ideally each tetrahedral surrounded by four linker L (similar to a diamond structure).
By increasing the organic linker, the distance between the silicon atoms and thus also the pore size of the polymer according to the invention is increased.
As a result of the selection and combination of the central structural units stirred in
The linkers L are preferably substituted or unsubstituted cyclic alkyl radicals having 5 to 24 carbon atoms or substituted or unsubstituted aryl radical having 6 to 24 carbon atoms, wherein the aryl radical preferably contains at least one substituted or unsubstituted phenyl group, which may also be part of a larger ring system , Preferably, L is selected from substituted or unsubstituted aryl radicals containing from 1 to 8 aromatic or heteroaromatic rings.

Preference is given to organic linkers L which have 2 bonding sites for Si (or also the abovementioned heteroatoms, such as, for example, boron) selected from: wherein each X is independently selected from hydrogen, halogen, substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, alkoxy having preferably up to 4 C-atoms, more preferably 1, 2 or 3 C-atoms. The polymer according to the invention has a high porosity and is in principle microporous (preferably d <2 nm). It has a relatively large external surface due to very small particles or by the presence of macropores. In addition, the polymer shows a hysteresis over the entire pressure range, which indicates a swelling behavior.
The polymer according to the invention has a specific surface area (BET) of more than 500 m 2 g -1 and up to 3000 m 2 g -1 , more preferably from 700 to 2000 m 2 g -1 , more preferably more than 750 m 2 g -1 .
The average pore size of the polymer according to the invention is preferably less than 2 nm and preferably greater than 0.1 nm, particularly preferably from 0.5 to 1.5 nm.
The polymer according to the invention preferably has a micropore volume of 0.2 to 1.5 cm 3 g -1 , more preferably above 0.3 cm 3 g -1 and more preferably below 1.0 cm 3 g -1 .
Darüber hinaus zeigt es eine hohe thermische Stabilität bis ca. 350°C.The polymer of the invention is further advantageous air and water stable and chemically stable. In addition, it shows high thermal stability up to about 350 ° C.
The polymer according to the invention is preferably amorphous, strongly hydrophobic (comparable to the hydrophobicity of activated carbons).
However, if desired, the hydrophobicity can be reduced by the attachment of polar substituents (eg, -OH, -NH 2 ) to the alkyl or aryl radicals. The water vapor physisorption is very low in the range of small relative pressure (up to 0.5) (preferably below 200 cm 3 g -1 ), so that hardly any adsorption takes place. Even at high pressures, the water vapor physisorption is preferably below 500 cm 3 g -1 . These values are also dependent on the pore size and specific surface area.
This behavior is even more pronounced for poly (4,4'-biphenylene) silane. A significant adsorption of water begins only at a relative pressure of about 0.6 and thus corresponds approximately to the behavior of most activated carbons.
Die Methanspeicherkapazitäten erreicht bevorzugt bei Drücken von 50 bar bis 100 bar Werte von mindestens 4 Gew.-%.The polymer according to the invention advantageously has a good and above all reversible storage capacity for gases, in particular methane and hydrogen. The hydrogen storage capacities of the polymer of the invention is preferably at least 1 wt .-% hydrogen at 1 bar, with increasing tendency with increasing pressure. The methane storage capacities preferably reach values of at least 4% by weight at pressures of from 50 bar to 100 bar.
Overall, the properties of the polymer according to the invention are comparable to the properties of activated carbon. However, the polymer according to the invention is advantageously colorless or white and advantageously has a clearly defined chemical composition.
In particular, by the size and the chemical properties of the linker L can be advantageously set important properties such as porosity, hydrophobicity and gas storage capacity. The optimum synthesis temperature is around -10 ° C, preferably between 0 ° C and -20 ° C. At lower temperatures were the spec. Surfaces lower.
Damit unterscheidet es sich gegenüber vielen gegenüber vielen COFs und MOFs.Advantageously, the polymer according to the invention is very light (low density), chemically and thermally stable, not sensitive to hydrolysis and non-toxic. This is different from many COFs and MOFs.

Die Ausbeute beträgt 83% und die spezifische Oberfläche (BET) 780 m2g–1.0.5 g (0.77 mmol) of tetrakis (4-bromophenylsilane) are introduced into the reaction vessel under an argon atmosphere and dissolved in 50 ml of dried THF. The mixture is cooled in an ice water bath with freeze-salt mixture to -10 ° C and treated dropwise with 1.23 ml (3.07 mmol) of butyllithium. After stirring at -10 ° C for 10 min, 0.17 ml (0.77 mmol) of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) is added dropwise. The mixture is stirred until it has warmed to room temperature. Following the reaction by adding 40 ml of dist. Water stopped. The resulting precipitate is centrifuged off and washed twice with THF, water and ethanol. The product is dried in a drying oven at 100 ° C for at least six hours. The yield is 83% and the specific surface area (BET) 780 m 2 g -1 .

Another possibility would be that a portion of the butyllithium has split the THF and that these residues have been incorporated into the polymeric compound.
A relatively narrow peak of high intensity is at a chemical shift of -17.9 ppm. This is attributed to the tetrahedral with phenylene substituted silicon atoms, which make up the bulk of the polymeric compound. From the comparison of the smaller chemical shift in tetrakis (4-bromophenyl) silane of -13.4 ppm with the present of -17.9 ppm, it can be concluded that the type of substituent on the phenylene ring despite the relatively large distance (4 C atoms) still has a strong influence on the chemical shift of the para-position to sitting silicon atom. This influence is additionally dependent on the nature of the substituent. Furthermore, the spectrum has a very broad peak in the range of -33 to -43 ppm. This is another indication of aliphatic radicals on a part of the silicon atoms and confirms the assumption that by side reactions such were incorporated into the network.

N2-PhysisorptionN 2 physisorption
The results of physisorption measurements suggest that the compound is a porous material.
Commun. 2007, 67–69)).Hysteresis occurs in all measured samples because the desorption curve does not close to the adsorption curve down to very small relative pressures. This behavior is typical of amorphous, porous polymers (eg, Trip-PIM (Ghanem et al., Chem. Commun., 2007, 67-69)).
For comparison, the adsorption capacity of tetrakis (4-bromophenyl) silane was measured to exclude that the tetragonal rigid starting material is a porous compound. A specific BET surface area at p / p 0 = 0.3 of 0.22 m 2 g -1 was determined.

At a pressure of p = 1 bar 105 cm 3 g -1 of hydrogen are adsorbed, which corresponds to a value of 0.94 wt .-%. Since the adsorption curve has a positive increase with increasing pressure, it can be assumed that the amount of adsorbed hydrogen also increases at higher pressures.
H2O-PhysisorptionH 2 O physisorption
In contrast to N 2 physisorption, no appreciable adsorption of water occurs at low relative pressures. The adsorbed amount increases slowly but steadily and reaches a maximum near saturation vapor pressure. Due to the small amount of adsorbed water at low relative pressures, the determination of the BET specific surface area in the range of 0.05 to 0.3 is not meaningful. In both isotherms a pronounced hysteresis can be seen, which closes approximately only at very small relative pressures. As in the case of N 2 physisorption, this phenomenon can be interpreted as an effect of the swelling behavior. However, it can also be thought of as a result of relatively strong interactions. the water molecules with z. For example, hydropomene can be viewed by hydroxy groups, which form hydrogen bonds and thus can favor the water adsorption energetically. That the amount of adsorbed water is smaller at higher relative pressure and at higher temperature can be described by the Clausius-Clapeyron equation. The calculation of the total pore volume from the adsorbed amount of water at the highest relative pressure leads at 25 ° C to 0.28 cm 3 g -1 , which is even smaller with increasing temperature. In comparison, the micropore volume determined by the t-method from the N 2 isotherm at 77 K is 0.32 cm 3 g -1 and from the adsorbed amount at p / p 0 = 0.92 even 0.52 cm 3 g -1 . These data clearly show that the water adsorption takes place only in certain parts of the pores, in which the hydrophobic properties due to the presence of z. B. OH groups are not so pronounced.

Since even in the case of poly (4,4'-biphenylene) silane no direct statement can be made about the long-range arrangement by means of X-ray diffractometry, a representative portion of the samples was examined by solid-state NMR spectroscopy to obtain information about the short-range order in the polymeric compound to obtain.
δpoly(4,4'-biphenylen)silan [ppm] = 54,2; 17,7; 12,9; 8,4
δpoly(1,4-phenylen)silan [ppm] = 54,0; 18,1; 12,7; 8,6 In this spectrum, as with poly (1,4-phenylene) silane, four signals appear in the range of aliphatic C atoms, which differ only slightly in chemical shift:
δ poly (4,4'-biphenylene) silane [ppm] = 54.2; 17.7; 12.9; 8.4
δ poly (1,4-phenylene) silane [ppm] = 54.0; 18.1; 12.7; 8.6
Ie. that also in this compound aliphatic radicals having four carbon atoms in the structure are present, which are likely due to butyl groups from the butyllithium.

For the compound poly (4,4'-biphenylene) silane, a specific surface area of 1046 m 2 g -1 (p / p 0 = 0.05-0.3) was determined by evaluating the BET plot. Thus, the specific surface area is larger by 266 m 2 g -1 with increased organic linker in the structure. The isotherm was also evaluated according to the t method according to de Boer. The t-plot can be found in Appendix A7. For the compound poly (4,4'-biphenylene) silane results according to this method, a microporous volume of 0.45 cm 3 g -1 . The specific micropore surface area is 845 m 2 g -1 and the external surface is 201 m 2 g -1 . The micropore volume has increased from the phenylene to the biphenylene group due to the linker enlargement.

At a pressure p = 1 bar 134 cm 3 g -1 of hydrogen are adsorbed, which corresponds to a value of 1.21 wt .-%. Thus, the storage capacity is greater by 0.27 wt .-% than poly (1,4-phenylene) silane. It can be assumed that the difference in the storage capacities of the two compounds still increases with high-pressure measurements, since the isotherm of poly (4,4'-biphenylene) silane has a greater increase at higher relative pressures than the isotherm of poly (1,4-phenylene ) silane.

In comparison with other microporous materials (eg, zeolites, MOFs), the compound has hydrophobic properties similar to those of activated carbons. For many activated carbons, the adsorption of water vapor clearly begins only at a relative pressure greater than 0.5. Zeolites, on the other hand, show strongly hydrophilic properties due to their material composition, whereby most adsorb even at a relative pressure of less than 0.2 and therefore also exhibit type I isotherms in the case of water adsorption in micropores.
