Preference is given to ethers, in particular diethyl ether, since the reaction product is insoluble herein.
Starting from the catalysts according to the invention of the general formulas (IIa) or (IIb) obtained according to the two-stage process and containing one phosphine ligand (L 2 ) in addition to an im-leavening one (L 1 ), it is possible to use in a third Step to exchange the phosphine ligand (L 2 ) by another ligand L 2 , which is a nitrogen-containing, preferably aromatic heterocycle, in particular pyridine or its derivatives having the meanings given on pages 10 and 11.

All The aforementioned catalysts of type (B) can either be used as such in the reaction mixture of NBR metathesis or even applied to a solid support and immobilized become. The Amount of metathesis catalyst based on the nitrile rubber used depends on nature as well as catalytic activity of the special catalyst. Preference is given to using 1-hexene or 1-octene. When the co-olefin is liquid (such as 1-hexene), the amount of the co-olefin is preferably in a range of 0.2-20% by weight based on the nitrile rubber used. If the co-olefin is a gas, such as ethylene, the amount of co-olefin is chosen so that a pressure in the reaction vessel at room temperature of 1 × 10 5 Pa-1 × 10 7 Pa, preferably a pressure in the range of 5.2 × 10 5 Pa to 4 × 10 6 Pa.

Especially before The solvent used is chlorobenzene. In some cases, if the co-olefin itself can act as a solvent, such. As in 1-hexene, can be dispensed with the addition of a further additional solvent.
The Concentration of the nitrile rubber used in the reaction mixture Metathesis is not critical, but it is natural Note that the reaction is not due to a much too high viscosity the reaction mixture and the associated mixing problems should be negatively affected. The inventive catalyst system leaves not only successful in metathesis degradation of nitrile rubbers, but also more universal for other metathesis reactions, such. B. for Ringschlussmetathesen such as the ring closure of diethyl diallylmalonate.
By using the catalyst systems of metathesis catalyst and alkaline earth metal chloride according to the invention, the amount of the metathesis catalyst and thus the amount of precious metal can be significantly reduced with respect to analogous metathesis reactions at comparable reaction times, in which only the catalyst; that is used without alkaline earth metal chloride. When comparable noble metal contents are used, the salt additions shorten the reaction times substantially. When used for the degradation of nitrile rubbers, degraded nitrile rubbers with significantly lower molecular weights M w and M n can be achieved.
