Description
The invention relates to gas sensors for detecting gas components of a gas stream according to the preamble of claims 1 and 2.
Gas sensors of the aforementioned type are widely known and are used, for example, in motor vehicle technology in catalytic converter vehicles in the exhaust system of the respective vehicle engines. Typical gas sensors are hydrocarbon (HC) or carbon monoxide (CO) exhaust gas sensors, unbalance sensors or nitrogen oxide (NO) sensors serving to monitor the state of the catalytic converter, which are used to display the charge state of a NOx storage catalytic converter in a gasoline direct injection (BDE). serve. Also worth mentioning are NH3 sensors, which regulate the addition of NH3 in the so-called "Selective Catalytic Reduction" (SCR) for continuous NOx reduction.
A BDE storage catalyst is used in particular to store the nitrogen oxides during lean operation of the vehicle engine, for example, by surface coverage of the catalyst in the form of nitrates. After loading, the nitrates stored on the surface are reduced in a phase of rich operation of the engine, the so-called "regeneration phase", in N2. The reduction process can only take place in a limited temperature interval in the range of 750 ° C.
A disadvantage of the described BDE storage catalysts is that substances contained in the exhaust gas to be purified exhibit a similar behavior as the nitrates mentioned, namely also tend to occupy the Katalyatoroberfläche. Thus, for example, the sulfur contained in the exhaust gas and resulting sulfate occupancies represent a considerable problem in catalytic converters. Similarly, these substances are also problematic for the gas sensors involved here.
The present invention is therefore an object of the invention to provide a gas sensor mentioned above, which avoids the aforementioned disadvantages of the prior art and provides a technically simple and inexpensive as possible solution to the above regeneration problem.
This object is solved by the features of the independent claims. Advantageous developments of the gas sensor according to the invention are the subject of the respective subclaims.
The invention is based on the idea to arrange a protective layer on the measured gas side of a gas sensor on the sensor electrode into which suitable getter substances are preferably introduced. By means of these getter materials either the occupancy with the occupancy substances can be prevented or the degradation or the desorption of these substances can be accelerated. In another variant, suitable getter substances are incorporated into the sensor electrode itself. The variants mentioned can be used both alternatively and in different combinations.
The getter substances serve, for example, in a protective layer disposed upstream of the electrode, to prevent occupying substances, in particular sulfates, from penetrating into the electrode material. However, if possible, do not retain the substance components to be measured, such as HC, CO, NOx or NH3. The requirements of these getters are therefore completely contrary to those of the respective catalyst materials. In one embodiment, the getters used are cerium and barium or corresponding compounds of these elements with other substances. In the case of three-way catalysts, it is known to use these elements to avoid odor nuisance due to H2S formation. Thus, these elements have a strong gettering effect on sulfates.
The exact mode of operation of gettering materials (getter materials) is known per se and consists in that the covering materials contained in the gas to be measured enter into a suitable chemical compound with the getter materials, for example converted to corresponding salts, as in the example sulfur to sulfate. During the temperature-induced regeneration, these compounds are then cracked again and converted back into the getter material and the respective occupancy substance. So basically, getter centers arranged on the surface of getter materials or the getter effect in the getter material volume are differentiated. In addition to the above-mentioned elements cerium and barium, it is known that elements such as titanium or chromium or their compounds with other substances are also suitable as entraining materials.
According to another variant of the invention, instead of using said getter materials, the electrode itself is formed entirely of a material having a corresponding gettering effect, for example of barium-containing ceramic material which is electrically conductive or, as in the case of doped BaTiO 3, electrically semiconducting.
It is also to be noted that the catalyst materials are known to serve to adsorb and thus temporarily bind exhaust substances such as NOx or nitrates. Therefore, it would be contrary to their purpose to remove the adsorbed substances from the catalyst at elevated temperature in order to regenerate the catalyst surface. Because such a procedure would transport these pollutants back into the environment.
The present invention is based on the finding that - in contrast - at the sensor surface relatively small amounts of adsorbed pollutants can be thoroughly desorbed in operation at elevated temperature without burdening the environment too much, although these substances, the sensors in their function significantly impaired. In addition, it has been found that, for example, sulfates deposited at a relatively low temperature block the sensor surface, but do not permanently damage it and are thus readily desorbable.
In a preferred mode of operation for regenerating a gas sensor according to the invention, a critical occupancy of the sensor is first detected, for example due to an incoming change of a standard measurement signal in the HC measurement. In the case of a sulfur occupancy, a desulfurization procedure is initiated after detection of a critical occupancy, in which the sensor, optionally together with an upstream catalyst, preferably regenerated by fat combustion of an internal combustion engine produced fat gas and at elevated temperature preferably> 700 ° C. Alternatively, even without the mentioned detection of a critical occupation state, the sensor can be operated temporarily or regularly at the stated temperature and the covering materials located on the sensor surface can be desorbed. This regeneration phase can take place in an operating phase of the sensor in which it has to be temporarily not ready for use. Alternatively, uncritical operating phases for regeneration can also be used for the actual sensor operation. Although the sensor surface can become clogged with the disturbing occupancy substances in the subsequent measuring operation, these can not accumulate again at all, since they are instead degraded on a regular basis.
The invention can be used particularly advantageously in mixed-potential sensors, since these in principle operate in temperature ranges in which the surface deposits mentioned increasingly occur.
Hierbei zeigenThe invention will be explained in more detail below, with reference to the attached drawings, by means of exemplary embodiments. Show here
