NO x storage catalysts are used to reduce NO x emissions of lean-burn internal combustion engines. NO x storage catalysts have a NO x storage for the absorption of nitrogen oxides NO x and a catalytic component for the reduction of NO x to N 2 . In a lean operating phase, in which the internal combustion engine is operated with an excess of oxygen (λ> 1), NO x can not be completely reduced due to the excess of oxidizing agents with conventional 3-way catalysts. In these phases, NO x in the NO x storage is bound in the form of nitrate. An NO x regeneration of the NO x storage catalyst takes place at recurring intervals by charging the catalyst with a rich or stoichiometric exhaust gas atmosphere (λ ≦ 1), wherein NO x is desorbed and converted by the existing reducing agents CO, HC and H 2 .
In addition to the appropriate NO x absorption occurs unwanted incorporation of sulfur dioxide SO 2 in the form of sulfate in the memory. Since desorption of SO 2 takes place only at temperatures above 600 ° C, the removal of sulfur from the catalyst during the NO x regeneration does not succeed. In order to counteract an increasing reduction of the storage capacity, the catalytic activity and irreversible damage to the catalyst by so-called sulfate grain formation, it is therefore known to carry out desulfurization at longer intervals, the NO x storage heated by motor or non-motor measures to over 600 ° C and is acted upon by a rich exhaust gas atmosphere. A desulfurization requirement may be determined, for example, time-controlled or by means of a decreasing NO x storage rate measured with a downstream NO x sensor.
It is also known to pressurize the NO x storage catalyst periodically during the desulfurization with lean and rich exhaust gas. In this way, the formation of toxic and odorous hydrogen sulfide H 2 S, which is opposite to the SO 2 formation at a slower kinetics, can be largely suppressed. This Beaufschlagungswechsel, the so-called lambda wobble frequency can be controlled either time-controlled or based on a signal of a downstream lambda probe. Regardless of whether desulphurization is performed with or without alternate exhaust loading, a desulphurization rich lambda preset is typically selected between 0.85 and 0.97. As low as possible lambda values are desired in order to increase a desulfurization rate by a correspondingly high amount of reducing agent, to shorten a desulfurization time and ultimately to minimize fuel consumption and thermal stress on the catalyst. On the other hand, very low lambda values increase the risk of reductant and H 2 S breakthrough behind the catalyst. This applies in particular to aged NO x storage catalysts in which the processes taking place during the desulfurization, such as sulphate precipitation, formation of SO 2 , consumption of the O 2 storage medium, proceed relatively slowly and thus a very large amount of reducing agent can not be fully utilized. As a result, in aged NO x storage catalysts it often comes to a termination of the desulfurization process before the desulfurization was completely effected. Although methods have been proposed in which the fat lambda input for the desulfurization is made dependent on a directly or indirectly measured or theoretically modeled stored sulfur mass, aging processes of the storage catalyst are not taken into account, for example by thermal loads.
The invention therefore is to propose a desulphurization process. which is a current state of the catalyst, in particular an aging state the same, and a device for carrying out the method.
These The object is achieved by a method and a device having the features the claims 1 and 9 solved.
The method according to the invention provides for determining the fat lambda input for the desulfurization as a function of a NO x storage rate of the NO x storage catalytic converter or of a quantity derived from the NO x storage rate, determined in a lean phase preceding the desulfurization phase. The NO x -Speicherrate is a proportion of a stored NO x amount on a flowing into the NO x storage catalytic amount of NOx, said NOx amount under a NO x concentration, an NO x content or a similar size or a built-up over a period of time NO x mass is understood. It has surprisingly been found that the NO x storage rate of the NO x storage catalyst, that is, the ability of the catalyst to absorb a proportion of an offered NO x concentration, correlates very strongly with aging of the catalyst. Accordingly, the NO x storage rate not only reflects the speed of the processes involved in NO x storage, but also provides a measure of the rate of the processes involved in the desulfurization of the catalyst. The latter include the decomposition of sulfate, formation of SO 2 , consumption of oxygen storage as well as diffusion processes. By including the NO x storage rate in the determination of the rich lambda input for the desulfurization of the NO x storage catalytic converter, the rich lambda input can be optimally adapted to the aging state of the catalytic converter. Accordingly, in the case of an aged catalytic converter (reduced NO x storage rate), relatively high values are selected for the rich lambda input (low amount of reducing agent) and relatively low values (high amount of reducing agent) for a fresh catalyst (high NO x storage rate). This procedure ensures that the desulphurisation grease lambda input is always set as low as the catalyst conversion speed allows to make desulphurisation as short and reliable as possible and to keep fuel consumption low. At the same time, the formation of hydrogen sulphide H 2 S and the breakdown of pollutants are largely suppressed.
A particularly advantageous embodiment of the method provides to determine the rich lambda input as a function of a NO x storage capability. This is previously determined from a relation of the currently determined NO x storage rate and a theoretical NO x storage rate of a sulfur-free and undamaged NO x storage catalytic converter. The theoretical NO x storage rate of the sulfur-free and undamaged NO x storage catalytic converter must be used for this calculation from a stored characteristic map, which also takes into account a NO x charge of the NO x storage catalytic converter. This embodiment further improves the accuracy of the method.
Preferably, the NO x storage rate at the beginning of an immediately preceding lean phase, in particular directly or with a predetermined delay after completion of the lean phase preceding desulfurization determined. Thus, at the time of determining the NO x storage rate, the NO x storage catalyst is virtually free of sulfur and NO x . An impairment of the NO x storage rate, in particular in relation to the sulfur-free and undamaged NO x storage catalytic converter, can then only be caused by irreversible damage processes and other aging processes.
The amount of NO x required for the calculation of the NO x storage rate, which flows into the NO x storage catalytic converter (NO x raw emission), is preferably based on a stored data map which the amount of NO x emitted by the internal combustion engine as a function of different Operating parameters of the internal combustion engine reproduces determined. Of course, it can also be measured by arranging corresponding gas sensors, in particular a NO x sensor, upstream of the catalytic converter, which, however, involves considerable additional costs.
The stored amount of NO x can be determined in a simple manner by means of an NO x concentration measured by means of an NO x sensor arranged downstream of the NO x storage catalytic converter. According to a different embodiment, the stored NO x amount can just as well be determined by measuring and evaluating a Lambdaverlaufs downstream of the NO x storage catalytic converter during a previous desulfurization NO x regeneration. This method is known to the person skilled in the art and will not be explained in detail here.
It has proved to be particularly advantageous to specify a permissible rich lambda range, within which the exact height of the grease lambda input for the desulfurization is determined as a function of the NO x storage rate of the catalyst. Alternatively, it is equally advantageous to specify a lower lambda lambda threshold value, wherein a deviation upward, that is to say in the direction of less rich air-fuel ratios, is determined as a function of the NO x storage rate. In this case, the rich lambda range or the lower lambda lambda threshold value can be determined in a known manner as a function of a measured or theoretically determined sulfur loading of the NO x storage catalytic converter and / or be specified by operating parameters of the internal combustion engine.
The device according to the invention provides means with which the method steps determining a NO x storage rate of the NO x storage catalytic converter in a lean phase preceded by the desulfurization phase and determination of the rich lambda input for the desulfurization can be carried out as a function of the determined NO x storage rate. Preferably, these means comprise a control unit in which a procedure for controlling the method steps for the desulfurization of a NO x storage catalytic converter is stored in digital form. In this case, the control unit may advantageously also be integrated in an engine control unit.
Further advantageous embodiments of the invention are the subject of the remaining dependent claims.
