Abstract
本发明公开一种可防止灰度级倒置现象的驱动等离子显示板的装置。根据本发明的装置包括:误差扩散单元,用于对从反伽玛校正单元接收的数据进行误差扩散;灰度级倒置检测单元,用于检测从反伽玛校正单元接收的数据的灰度级值是否为产生灰度级倒置现象的灰度级值,并根据检测结果产生1位比特控制信号;设置在误差扩散单元与灰度级倒置检测单元之间的加法器,用于将1位比特控制信号加到从误差扩散单元接收到的数据的低位比特;以及抖动单元,利用从加法器接收到的低位比特进行抖动操作。因此,当对产生灰度级倒置的数据进行抖动操作时,通过在该数据的最低位比特上加1可使得灰度级值得到改善。从而可防止产生灰度级倒置现象。
Description
本申请要求于2003年12月15日在韩国提交的申请号为10-2003-0091150的申请的优先权,在此作为参考。
技术领域
本发明涉及驱动等离子显示板的装置和方法,更具体地说,涉及可防止灰度级倒置现象的驱动等离子显示板的装置和方法。
背景技术
等离子显示板(下面称为PDP)是一种利用磷光体受气体放电所产生的真空紫外线激发而产生的可见光的显示设备。与目前已成为显示装置的主流的阴极射线管(CRT)相比,PDP的优点在于其厚度薄和重量轻并且可制作成高清晰度的大屏幕。PDP由若干设置成矩阵形的放电单元组成,并且一个放电单元构成一个像素。
图1所示为传统的三电极AC表面放电型PDP的放电单元的结构的立体图。
参照图1,传统三电极AC表面放电型PDP的放电单元包括:在上基板10的底面形成的扫描电极12Y、维持电极12Z,和在下基板18的顶面形成的编址电极20X。
上介电层14和保护薄膜16叠加覆盖在其上形成有互相平行的扫描电极12Y、维持电极12Z的上基板10上。等离子体放电所产生的壁电荷积聚在上介电层14上。保护薄膜16用于防止由于等离子体放电而产生的喷溅损坏上介电层14,并提高次级电子的发射效率。通常采用氧化镁(MgO)制作保护薄膜层16。
下介电层22和阻隔壁24在形成有编址电极20X的下基板18上形成。下介电层22和阻隔壁24上涂有磷光层26。编址电极20X在与扫描电极12Y和维持电极12Z十字交叉的方向形成。
阻隔壁24与下介电层22并行形成,并用于防止气体放电所产生的紫外线和可见光向相邻的放电单元泄漏。磷光层26被等离子体放电所产生的紫外线激发发光,发出红、绿、蓝的可见光。用于气体放电的惰性气体被注入到上基板10和阻隔壁24之间以及下基板18和阻隔壁24之间的放电空间。
为了表示图像的灰度级,用被分成多个具有不同放电量的子场的一帧驱动PDP。每一子场被分为产生均匀放电的复位周期、选择放电单元的编址周期和根据放电数量实现灰度级的维持周期。
例如,如图2所示,要表示256灰度级的图像,对应于1/60秒的一帧周期(16.67ms)被分成八个子场SF1至SF8。另外,八个子场SF1至SF8中的每个再被分为复位周期、编址周期和维持周期。此时,每个子场的复位周期和编址周期是相同的,但在每个子场中其维持周期以2n(n=0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7)的比例增加。
图3所示为说明传统三电极AC表面放电型PDP驱动方法的波形。
参照图3,一个子场被分为:全屏初始化的复位周期、当以逐行扫描模式扫描全屏幕时写入数据的编址周期和写入数据的放电单元保持发光的维持周期。
在复位周期,复位波形RP被同时加到扫描电极线Y1至Ym。如果复位波形RP被加到扫描电极线Y1至Ym,那么在扫描电极线Y1至Ym和维持电极线Z1至Zm之间产生复位放电,以使放电单元初始化。
在编址周期,扫描脉冲SP顺序加到扫描电极线Y1至Ym。与扫描脉冲SP同步的数据脉冲DP加到编址电极线X1至Xn。此时,在被加有扫描脉冲SP和数据脉冲DP的放电单元中产生编址放电。
在维持周期,第一和第二维持脉冲SUSPy、SUSPz被交替加到扫描电极线Y1至Ym和维持电极线Z1至Zm。此时,在发生编址放电的放电单元中产生维持放电。
在这种PDP中,根据下面的方程1确定亮度
在上面的方程中,B为亮度,A为子场映射信息,k为子场数量,N为子场权值,而s为维持脉冲的一次放电亮度。
另外,利用维持数与灰度级数之比得到增益。换句话说,增益=维持总数/(灰度级数1)。例如,若维持总数为255而灰度级为256,则增益为1。
子场映射信息A表示编址周期选择的信息。例如,若在编址周期选择放电单元,则A设为“1”。若在编址周期不选择放电单元,则A设为“0”。N为对应当前子场数量k的子场权值。s为维持放电产生的亮度。
例如,若在PDP中增益设为1,有12个子场,各子场的权值分别设为1,2,4,8,16,32,32,32,32,32,32,32,则该PDP的亮度可设为如表1所示的值。

在表1中,‘×’表示灰度级未示出,而‘○’表示灰度级示出。从表1可看出,该PDP包括12个子场,并用亮度权值1,2,4,8,16,32,32,32,32,32,32,32表示256个灰度级。
表1示出了仅考虑了维持放电所产生的光时的PDP的亮度。然而,在实际被驱动的PDP中,复位放电、编址放电以及维持放电产生光。同样地,如图4所示,若表示包括复位放电、编址放电以及维持放电的灰度级,则发生灰度级倒置现象。换句话说,用n-1(n为自然数)灰度级表示的PDP的亮度比用n灰度级表示的PDP的亮度要亮。
下面将予以详细的描述。从表1可看出,为了表示31灰度级,选择具有亮度权值1,2,4,8,16的子场。因此,为了表示31灰度级,在5个子场中产生编址放电。相反地,为了表示32灰度级,选择具有亮度权值32的子场。因此,为了表示32灰度级,在1个子场中产生编址放电。此时,由于31灰度级与32灰度级之间编址放电产生的光而产生亮度倒置现象。换句话说,31灰度级所产生的光比32灰度级所产生的光亮。
实际上,包括在复位放电和编址放电中产生的光的PDP的亮度由下面的方程2确定
在该方程中,L为初始被复位的子场的数量,r为复位脉冲的一次放电亮度,a为编址脉冲的一次放电亮度。
L表示产生复位放电的子场的数量。例如,若在PDP中有12个子场并且在这12个子场产生复位放电,则L可设为12。
包括一对维持脉冲所产生的光的亮度可由下面的方程4确定
从方程4导出如方程3的矩阵。利用该矩阵可查出r、a、s的值。通常r(复位脉冲的一次放电亮度)值为0.208815[cd/m2],a(编址脉冲的一次放电亮度)值为0.413396[cd/m2],而s(维持脉冲的一次放电亮度)值为0.44553[cd/m2]。此时,r、a、s的值不是实际的亮度,只是用该方程计算出的值。通过替换r、a、s的值可得到近似于实际亮度的亮度。
包括复位脉冲的放电亮度、编址脉冲的放电亮度和维持脉冲的放电亮度的PDP的亮度,也就是方程4的PDP的亮度可在下面的表2中表示。

在表2中,灰度级0中仅表示在12个子场中产生的复位脉冲的亮度。灰度级1中表示的是对应于亮度权值1的维持亮度、一对维持脉冲的亮度、12复位脉冲的亮度以及一个编址放电的亮度。另外,灰度级31中表示的是对应于亮度权值31的维持亮度、5个维持脉冲对的亮度、12复位脉冲的亮度以及5个编址放电的亮度。并且,灰度级32中表示的是对应于亮度权值32的维持亮度、一个维持脉冲对的亮度、12复位脉冲的亮度以及一个编址放电的亮度。
此时,若在灰度级31中r、a、s的值被替换,表示PDP的亮度为20.61184。另外,若在灰度级32中r、a、s的值被替换,表示PDP的亮度为17.62166。也就是,在传统的PDP中产生灰度级倒置现象并因此不能表示具有线性亮度的图像。
发明内容
因此,基于上述问题提出本发明,本发明的目的在于提供可防止灰度级倒置现象的驱动等离子显示板的装置和方法。
为了实现上述目的,根据本发明所提供的驱动等离子显示板的装置包括:误差扩散单元,用于对从反伽玛校正单元接收的数据进行误差扩散;与反伽玛校正单元连接的灰度级倒置检测单元,用于检测从反伽玛校正单元接收的数据的灰度级值是否为产生灰度级倒置现象的灰度级值,并根据检测结果产生1位比特控制信号;设置在误差扩散单元与灰度级倒置检测单元之间的加法器,用于将1位比特控制信号加到从误差扩散单元接收到的数据的低比特位;抖动单元,利用从加法器接收到的数据的低比特位进行抖动操作。
灰度级倒置检测单元包括预先存储产生灰度级倒置现象的灰度级值的存储器。
当接收到具有产生灰度级倒置现象的灰度级值的数据时,灰度级倒置检测单元产生1位比特控制信号“1”,而当接收到具有不产生灰度级倒置现象的灰度级值的数据时,灰度级倒置检测单元产生1位比特控制信号“0”。
该装置还包括设置在误差扩散单元与加法器之间的比较单元,其中当低比特位全为“1”时,比较单元将从误差扩散单元接收到的低位比特提供给抖动单元,而当低位比特不为“1”时,比较单元将低位比特提供给抖动单元。
根据本发明,还提供一种驱动等离子显示板的方法,包括步骤:对当前接收的数据进行误差扩散,检测当前接收的数据的灰度级值是否为产生灰度级倒置现象的灰度级值,并根据检测结果产生1位比特控制信号;将1位比特控制信号加到已误差扩散的数据的低比特位,并利用已加有1位比特控制信号的低位比特进行抖动操作。
产生1位比特控制信号的步骤包括:当数据的灰度级值为产生灰度级倒置现象的灰度级值时,产生1位比特控制信号“1”,而当数据的灰度级值为不产生灰度级倒置现象的灰度级值时,产生1位比特控制信号“0”。
当已误差扩散的数据的低位比特全为“1”时,不加入1位比特控制信号而进行抖动操作。

参照图5,本发明的驱动PDP的装置包括连接在第一反伽玛校正单元32A和数据调整单元42之间的增益控制单元34、误差扩散单元36、抖动单元38、以及子场映射单元40;连接在第二反伽玛校正单元32B和波形发生器46之间的APL(平均图像电平)计算单元44;连接在第一反伽玛校正单元32A和抖动单元38之间的灰度级倒置检测单元50和加法器52;以及连接在误差扩散单元36与加法器52之间的比较单元54。
第一和第二反伽玛校正单元32A、32B对从输入线30接收的数字视频数据RGB进行反伽玛校正处理,从而线性变换图像信号亮度的灰度级值。
增益控制单元34通过红、绿、蓝数据控制有效增益,从而补偿色温。
子场映射单元40将从抖动单元38接收的数据按位映射到存储在其中的子场图,并将映射数据提供给数据调整单元42。
数据调整单元42将从子场映射单元40接收的数字视频数据提供给面板48的数据驱动电路。数据驱动电路与面板48的数据电极相连接,并通过一水平线锁存从数据调整单元42接收的数据,并在一水平周期单元中将锁存的数据提供给面板48的编址电极。
APL计算单元44计算平均亮度,即从第二反伽玛校正单元32B接收的数字视频数据RGB的一屏幕单元的APL,然后输出与所计算的APL相应的维持脉冲数量信息。
波形发生器46产生定时控制信号以响应APL计算单元44的维持脉冲数量信息,并将该定时控制信号提供给扫描驱动电路和维持驱动电路(未示出)。为响应从波形发生器46接收的定时控制信号,在维持周期期间扫描驱动电路和维持驱动电路将维持脉冲提供给面板48的扫描电极和维持电极。
误差扩散单元36通过将从增益控制单元34接收的数字视频数据RGB的误差扩散到相邻单元来精确地控制亮度值。
灰度级倒置检测单元50检测当前接收的数据的灰度级值是否产生灰度级倒置现象。抖动单元38利用抖动掩模图精确地控制灰度级的亮度值。同样,通过对灰度级倒置检测单元50的控制,抖动单元38控制灰度级的亮度值以便不产生灰度级倒置现象(实际上,灰度级的亮度值通过加法器52中增加的1比特调整1个单位)。也就是,根据本发明,抖动单元38控制产生灰度级倒置现象的灰度级的亮度值,从而防止发生灰度级倒置现象。
下面将详细描述。如图6所示,从第一反伽玛校正单元32A输出的视频数据分为整数部分和小数部分(图6中,参考字符X为“1”或“0”)。例如,若从外部接收i位比特(i为自然数)视频数据,则第一反伽玛校正单元32A输出校正的具有8位比特整数部分和8位比特小数部分的视频数据以便灰度级的亮度值可线性变换。
从第一反伽玛校正单元32A输出的视频数据通过增益控制单元34提供到误差扩散单元36和灰度级倒置检测单元50。
误差扩散单元36对所接收的视频数据进行误差扩散操作。例如,如图7所示,误差扩散单元36利用权值1/16、5/16、3/16、7/16进行误差扩散操作。换句话说,误差扩散单元36通过分配权值1/16给P1像素的小数部分、分配权值5/16给P2像素的小数部分、分配权值3/16给P3像素的小数部分及分配权值7/16给P4像素的小数部分进行误差扩散操作。另外,为了防止产生误差图误差扩散单元36在误差扩散操作中应用随机系数R。误差扩散单元36利用输入到其中的视频数据的小数部分的一些位比特如低5位比特执行误差扩散操作。
灰度级倒置检测单元50检测从第一反伽玛校正单元32A接收的数据的灰度级值是否为产生灰度级倒置现象的灰度级值。具体地说,灰度级倒置检测单元50首先从第一反伽玛校正单元32A接收数据,然后检测所输入的灰度级是否为产生灰度级倒置现象的灰度级。为此,灰度级倒置检测单元50包括存储器(未示出)。该存储器存储产生灰度级倒置现象的灰度级(如32灰度级)。(实际上,产生灰度级倒置的灰度级存储在该存储器中)。
因此,灰度级倒置检测单元50通过比较所接收的灰度级值与存储在存储器中的灰度级值,检测当前所接收的数据的灰度级值是否产生灰度级倒置现象。此时,若产生灰度级倒置现象,灰度级倒置检测单元50则发送1给加法器52。若不产生灰度级倒置现象,灰度级倒置检测单元50则发送0给加法器52。
加法器52将从误差扩散单元36接收的数据的低位比特(如,小数的3位比特)与从灰度级倒置检测单元50接收的1位比特相加。例如,若输入到误差扩散单元36的为低位比特“010”而输入到灰度级倒置检测单元50为“1”,则加法器52将“011”输出到抖动单元38。同时,若低位比特为“111”,则比较单元54设置在加法器52之前以便输入到灰度级倒置检测单元50的“1”不被相加。设置在误差扩散单元36与加法器52之间的比较单元54将低位比特“111”提供到抖动单元38,并将其余的比特提供给加法器52。
抖动单元38利用从加法器52接收到的低位比特进行抖动操作。例如,若接收的数据的低位比特为“011”,则抖动单元38利用如图8所示抖动掩模图中的对应于3/8灰度级的抖动掩模图进行抖动操作。例如,如图8所示,抖动掩模图可设为0、1/8、2/8、3/8、4/8、5/8、6/8和7/8灰度级,并且在抖动掩模图中,抖动值设为“1”的单元的数量按照0、2、4、6、8、10、12和14的顺序增加。另外,可看出抖动值设为“1”的单元的位置每四帧1F至4F是不同的。此时,抖动值“1”表示单元被打开,抖动值“0”表示单元被关闭。
抖动单元38利用输入到其中的数据的低位比特选择抖动掩模图,并利用抖动掩模图进行抖动操作(此时,低位比特的值越高,该单元打开的可能性越高)。此时,抖动单元38利用在产生灰度级倒置的灰度级加入1的低位比特进行抖动操作。也就是,由于抖动过程中该单元打开的可能性增加,可防止灰度级倒置现象的产生。事实上,如图9所示,若利用本发明则不产生灰度级倒置现象。因此可显示具有线性亮度的图像。
如上所述,根据本发明的驱动PDP的装置和方法,当对产生灰度级倒置的数据进行抖动操作时,通过在该数据的最低位比特上加1可使得灰度级值得到改善。从而可防止灰度级倒置现象。
参照具体实施例对本发明进行了详细描述,不限于这些实施例而仅由所附的权利要求所确定。可以意识到只要不脱离本发明的范围和宗旨该领域的技术人员可对实施例进行修改和变更。
Claims (7)
1、一种驱动等离子显示板的装置,包括:
误差扩散单元,用于对从反伽玛校正单元接收的数据进行误差扩散;
与反伽玛校正单元连接的灰度级倒置检测单元,用于检测从反伽玛校正单元接收的数据的灰度级值是否为产生灰度级倒置现象的灰度级值,并根据检测结果产生1位比特控制信号;
设置在误差扩散单元与灰度级倒置检测单元之间的加法器,用于将1位比特控制信号加到从误差扩散单元接收到的数据的低位比特;以及
抖动单元,利用从加法器接收到的低位比特进行抖动操作。
2、如权利要求1所述的装置,其中灰度级倒置检测单元包括预先存储产生灰度级倒置现象的灰度级值的存储器。
3、如权利要求1所述的装置,其中当接收到具有产生灰度级倒置现象的灰度级值的数据时,灰度级倒置检测单元产生1位比特控制信号“1”,而当接收到具有不产生灰度级倒置现象的灰度级值的数据时,灰度级倒置检测单元产生1位比特控制信号“0”。
4、如权利要求1所述的装置,还包括设置在误差扩散单元与加法器之间的比较单元,其中当低位比特全为“1”时,比较单元将从误差扩散单元接收到的低位比特提供给抖动单元,而当位低比特不为“1”时,比较单元将低位比特提供给抖动单元。
5、一种驱动等离子显示板的方法,包括步骤:
(a)对当前接收的数据进行误差扩散;
(b)检测当前接收的数据的灰度级值是否为产生灰度级倒置现象的灰度级值,并根据检测结果产生1位比特控制信号;
(c)将1位比特控制信号加到已误差扩散的数据的低位比特;和
(d)利用已加有1位比特控制信号的低位比特进行抖动操作。
6、如权利要求5所述的方法,其中产生1位比特控制信号的步骤包括当数据的灰度级值为产生灰度级倒置现象的灰度级值时,产生1位比特控制信号“1”,而当数据的灰度级值为不产生灰度级倒置现象的灰度级值时,产生1位比特控制信号“0”。
7、如权利要求5所述的方法,其中当已误差扩散的数据的低位比特全为“1”时,不加入1位比特控制信号而进行抖动操作。
