Description

Stable low pH personal care compositions and methods therefor
Background
Personal care compositions such as emulsions may typically contain one or more conventional and/or non-natural ingredients that provide skin conditioning, anti-foaming, and skin protection. Recent consumer awareness of non-natural ingredients has pushed compositions to more natural formulations containing naturally derived ingredients. Accordingly, efforts have been directed to reducing or eliminating non-natural ingredients from personal care compositions to provide improved consumer perception. However, removal or replacement of non-natural ingredients has proven particularly difficult for low pH formulations. For example, the removal or replacement of non-natural ingredients in low pH (e.g., pH of about 4 to about 5) formulations often results in products that exhibit instability or phase separation during aging studies.
Accordingly, there is a need for improved low pH personal care compositions and methods for making the same.

Example 2
The stability of each of the test personal care compositions (1) - (17) prepared in example 1 was evaluated. Specifically, the stability of each of the test personal care compositions (1) - (17) of example 1 was evaluated by measuring or observing pH and viscosity under various accelerated aging conditions.
To evaluate the viscosity under various accelerated aging conditions, each of the test personal care compositions (1) - (17) was placed in a respective glass jar and exposed to an environment maintained at the specific conditions (e.g., time and temperature) indicated in table 2. After the respective time of each of the studies, each of the personal care compositions was removed from the environment and allowed to cool in a monitored stability chamber maintained at about 25 ℃. After cooling to about 25 ℃, the viscosity and pH were measured and the personal care composition was visually observed/evaluated. The viscosity was measured using a Brookfield rheometer with rotor T-93 at 10RPM for about 1 minute.
The results of the pH and viscosity stability analyses testing personal care compositions (1) - (17) are summarized in tables 2 and 3, respectively. It should be understood that based on the definition of "relatively more stable" disclosed herein, a personal care composition is considered relatively more stable if no separation is observed and the viscosity and pH values are considered relatively more stable throughout the course of the analysis.

As shown in tables 2 and 3, personal care compositions (3), (11), and (17) remained stable by maintaining acceptable pH and viscosity values, and did not exhibit any phase separation under various accelerated aging conditions. It was observed that the physical properties of personal care compositions (3), (11) and (17) also remained unchanged under various accelerated aging conditions. Specifically, the color, odor and appearance of personal care compositions (3), (11) and (17) remained unchanged throughout the various accelerated aging conditions.
It should be understood that personal care compositions (3), (11) and (17) all contain about 4% cetearyl alcohol and ceteareth-20 and about 3.5% cetyl alcohol.
As indicated above, personal care composition (3) comprises stearyl alcohol in an amount of about 3%, which results in a combined total fatty alcohol content of cetyl alcohol and stearyl alcohol of about 6.5%. Personal care composition (3) also contained isopropyl palmitate in an amount of about 1.5%.
Personal care composition (11) comprises stearyl alcohol in an amount of about 1.5% and cetyl alcohol in an amount of about 3.5%, thereby providing about 5% total fatty alcohols. Personal care composition (11) also comprises isopropyl palmitate in an amount of about 1.5%.
The personal care composition (17) comprises stearyl alcohol in an amount of about 3%, cetyl alcohol in an amount of about 3.5%, thereby providing about 6.5% total fatty alcohols. Personal care composition (11) also comprises isopropyl palmitate in an amount of about 1.5%.
It was surprisingly found that personal care composition (17) was the only stable personal care composition comprising isopropyl palmitate in an amount of about 4%.
It has been surprisingly and unexpectedly found that stable personal care compositions having a pH of from about 4 to about 5 can be prepared when the primary emulsifiers, i.e., cetearyl alcohol and ceteareth-20, are present in an amount of about 4%, the combined amount of cetyl and stearyl alcohol is present in an amount of greater than or equal to about 5%, and cetyl alcohol is present in an amount of 3.5% or greater. It has also been surprisingly and unexpectedly found that stable personal care compositions having a pH of from about 4 to about 5 can be prepared when isopropyl palmitate is present in an amount of about or at least 1.5%. It has further been surprisingly and unexpectedly found that stable personal care compositions having a pH of from about 4 to about 5 can be prepared by providing cetyl alcohol and stearyl alcohol in an amount of about 6.5% or greater and/or cetearyl alcohol/ceteareth-20 in an amount of about 4% or greater in total if isopropyl palmitate is present in an amount of about 4%.
Example 3
Whiteness, absorbency, spreadability, tack and greasiness were also evaluated. To evaluate whiteness, absorbability, tack, spreadability and greasiness, a sensory panel consisting of ten panelists evaluating sensory properties was used. Each of the ten panelists evaluated each of the test personal care compositions (3), (11), and (17) using a standardized method and a 0 to 5 point rating scale, where '0' represents the lowest level (i.e., none or low) and '5' represents the highest value. A controlled amount of each of the test personal care compositions (3), (11) and (17) was used for the analysis. The results of analyzing the sensory characteristics of personal care compositions (3), (11) and (17) are summarized in table 4.
