Abstract

本发明提供一种有效减少伪轮廓的出现的显示装置。驱动器从一个像素的像素数据取得多个位数据,将所述多个位数据分配给相应的子帧,用预定数量的单元帧构造一个帧,并将各个单元帧中的相应位数据提供给各个像素,从而以数字方式驱动各个像素。具体地讲,分析电路(5-5)基于是否存在真轮廓来预测视频信号的一个画面中出现伪轮廓的可能性。根据分析结果来设定基于视频信号的显示方法。

本发明涉及显示装置,其通过根据视频信号中所包括的像素数据对矩阵状排列的像素进行数字驱动来进行显示。
背景技术
近来,大量研究和开发集中于改善有机EL显示器。自发光有机EL显示装置有利于实现高对比度。另外,由于有机EL元件具有高响应速率,所以可以无模糊地显示包括快速移动的视频。
目前,由于对高清晰度和高分辨率显示器的需求,最常采用的是通过薄膜晶体管(TFT)来驱动有机EL元件的有源矩阵型显示器。此类显示器通常由设置在基板上的有机EL元件制成,其中在基板上形成有低温多晶硅TFT等。尽管由于TFT的高迁移率和稳定工作,低温多晶硅TFT适合于用作有机EL显示器的驱动元件,但是仍存在诸如阈值或迁移率的特性变化很大的问题。当在饱和区中施加恒定电流驱动,从而导致像素间不均匀时,显示中的不均匀亮度变得可察觉。因此,公开了一种数字驱动方法,通过使TFT在线性区中作为开关工作来减小显示不均匀度。例如,在JP2005-275315 A(专利文献1)和JP 2005-331891 A(专利文献2)所公开的数字驱动中,使用多个子帧来实现多灰度级,因为以两个值(发光或不发光)来控制像素(子帧型数字驱动)。

发明内容
本发明要实现的目的
在传统的子帧型数字驱动中,容易产生伪轮廓。特别是,抑制由视线的高速移动引起的静止图像中的伪轮廓仍特别成问题。专利文献1公开了一种通过提高频率(刷新率)来抑制伪轮廓的方法。然而,由于高频率会增加功耗,固定地在高频下进行驱动并不可取。因此,如果可根据待显示的视频的性质来改变刷新率,则可通过仅在显示很可能引起伪轮廓的视频时才使用高频率,极大地限制功耗的增加。
应该指出的是,当改变刷新率时,必须准确地判定视频引起伪轮廓的可能性。如果可准确检测伪轮廓显示的可能性,则可确定合适的频率范围。因此,可实现能够同时抑制伪轮廓并减小功耗的有效控制。相反,如果检测不准确,则频率可能过度地升高或降低,因此无法兼顾伪轮廓抑制和功耗减小。
实现目的的手段
本发明提供一种根据视频信号的像素数据对矩阵状排列的像素进行数字驱动来进行显示的显示装置。该显示装置包括:驱动器,其从一个像素的像素数据取得多个位数据,将所述多个位数据分配给相应的子帧,用预定数量的单元帧构造一个帧,并将各个单元帧中的相应位数据提供给各个像素,从而对各个像素进行数字驱动;分析电路,其基于是否存在真轮廓来分析所述视频信号的一个画面中出现伪轮廓的可能性,其中根据所述分析电路的分析结果来设定基于所述视频信号的显示方法。
优选的是所述分析电路基于一个画面的视频数据检测伪轮廓出现位置的数量和真轮廓出现位置的数量,基于检测到的数量之比分析一个画面的显示中出现伪轮廓的可能性。
还优选的是所述分析电路将一个画面分成多个块,并基于块中伪轮廓出现位置的数量与真轮廓出现位置的数量之比分析一个画面的显示中出现伪轮廓的可能性。
还优选的是所述驱动器基于分析电路所执行的分析的结果改变一个帧中单元帧的数量。
还优选的是所述分析电路通过比较目标像素的像素数据与所述目标像素周围的周边像素数据来确定伪轮廓是否可能出现。
还优选的是所述像素包括有机EL元件。
本发明的效果
如上所述,根据本发明,可更准确地分析出现伪轮廓的可能性,以找到对伪轮廓问题的合适解决方案。

具体实施方式
下面参照附图描述本发明的优选实施例。
图1示出根据本发明实施例的显示装置101的总体构造。显示装置101包括:像素阵列2,其中像素1矩阵状排列,各个像素1发出R(红色)、G(绿色)和B(蓝色)中的任一种颜色;选择驱动器4,其用于选择性地驱动选择线6;数据驱动器5,其用于驱动数据线7;以及复用器3,其用于将来自数据驱动器5的输出连接至R、G或B数据线7。各个选择线6与像素1的各个行相应设置,而各个数据线7与像素1的各个列相应设置。三个R、G和B的像素1形成一个全彩像素单元以实现全彩。可对这些像素添加W(白色)像素1以形成单个RGBW全彩像素单元。在这种情况下,增加W数据线7,复用器3之一被构造为能够选择W数据线7。
图1所示的数据驱动器5包括输入电路5-1、帧存储器5-2、输出电路5-3和定时控制电路5-4,以像带有内置存储器的数据驱动器一样工作。来自外部源的逐点(像素)数据被输入至定时控制电路5-4,在定时控制电路5-4处根据输入数据生成控制信号并将其提供给输入电路5-1、帧存储器5-2和输出电路5-3。
从定时控制电路5-4输出的逐点数据被输入电路5-1转换为逐行数据并针对各个行存储在帧存储器5-2中。逐行读出存储在帧存储器5-2中的数据,并将其转移至输出电路5-3中。按照例如R、G和B的顺序选择复用器3。然后,当RGB的各个数据线7依次与输出电路5-3连接时,相应逐行数据按照R、G和B的顺序输出至各个数据线7。
应该指出的是,输入数据可针对R、G和B而分别地输入;分别地存储到针对R、G和B分别设置的各个帧存储器5-2中;并从输出电路5-3依次输出。或者,RGB输入数据可在按照R、G和B的顺序排列而形成一个全彩像素数据单元之后输入至输入电路5-1中,然后可把所有输入数据写入一个帧存储器5-2中。
如上所示,使用复用器3可实现构造的简化,因为数据驱动器5所需的输出线的数量仅为全彩像素单元的数量。因此,复用器3广泛用于移动终端。例如,在240×320四分之一视频图形阵列(Quarter Video Graphics Array,QVGA)的情况下,由于数据驱动器5所需的输出线数量仅为240,使输出电路5-3的尺寸最小化,所以使用复用器3有利于实现低成本。如果没有复用器3,则由于数据驱动器5的输出线应该分别连接至R、G和B数据线7,所以所需输出线数量将为240×3=720。
选择驱动器4选择在把数据输出至数据线7时数据要输出到的选择线6。这样,从数据驱动器5将数据适当写入相应行的像素1中。在完成数据写入之后,选择驱动器4释放对相应行的选择,并对随后的各个行重复选择和释放操作。即,选择驱动器4应该工作为每次仅选择一行。
选择驱动器4常常作为低温多晶硅TFT设置在与像素相同的基板上。或者,选择驱动器4可作为驱动器IC提供,或者内置在数据驱动器5内。
图2示出定时控制电路5-4的内部构造。逐点输入数据和输入控制信号首先输入至数据分析电路5-5中,以分析视频中包含何种类型的数据。基于此分析的结果,刷新率控制电路5-6随视频数据一起输出控制信号,该控制信号用于生成对输入视频而言最佳的刷新率。从刷新率控制电路5-6输出的控制信号被提供给帧存储器5-2、输出电路5-3、选择驱动器4等。显示装置101以对输入视频而言最佳的刷新率显示该视频。
图3示出了各个子帧SF0至SF5加权为1:2:4:8:16:32,在6位灰度级显示中,当灰度级数据“31(011111)”和“32(100000)”上下相邻显示时,相对于输入视频的刷新率,在标准、2x、4x和8x的不同刷新率设置下,伪轮廓的样子的变化。括号中所示的数字是位数据。图3的水平轴表示时间。当观看者的视线从上到下移动时,观看者观察到与(a-1)至(a-8)以及(b)、(c)和(d)的箭头所示那些图案类似的亮度图案(根据刷新率而不同)。对于以标准刷新率(即,与输入视频相同的刷新率)显示的视频,预期观看者观察到亮度周期为31/63或32/64的亮度,然而,当其视线沿着(a-1)移动时,观看者观察到持续一个全帧周期的亮度,这在显示器上呈现为伪轮廓。
另一方面,如果刷新率被设定为2x(“双倍速”),则帧周期缩短至一半,视频快速形成以使得显示变得相对不受视线移动的影响。这可参照图3来理解。如果视线的移动速度与上述例子相同,视线移动如箭头(a-2)所示,则即使在任何时候开始视线移动,也不会观察到持续达帧周期的亮度。因此,不会看到伪轮廓。然而,如果观看者的视线更快地移动,如箭头(b)所示,则观察到比预期亮度更大的亮度,从而导致在显示器上出现伪轮廓。刷新率为基准刷新率的四倍或八倍(4x或8x)时亦是如此。如果视线的移动速度受到限制,例如沿箭头(a-4)或(a-8),则几乎观察不到伪轮廓。然而,如果视线的移动速度增大到4x或8x,如箭头(c)或(d)所示,则观察到比预期亮度更大的亮度,从而再次导致出现伪轮廓。然而,由于人的视觉的实际追踪速度有限,如果以高于某一水平的频率刷新显示,则不会观察到伪轮廓。因此,就防止伪轮廓而言,刷新率越高越好。根据发明人所进行的实验,当采用4x或更高的刷新率时,观察不到伪轮廓。实验观察还确认,通过采用约4x的刷新率,同时将最高有效位(MSB)子帧或另一等同子帧划分成两个或更多个子帧来缩短亮度周期,可限制伪轮廓而无需将刷新率提高至8x。
然而,输入视频并非必然包括引起伪轮廓的数据。如果输入视频如图3所示包括引起伪轮廓的数据,则优选较高的刷新率,但是如果输入视频不包括此类数据,则优选较低频率,以便降低功耗。
可通过比较相邻像素的输入数据的比特排列来确定输入视频中是否将出现伪轮廓,如接下来将说明的。当原始数据和通过对相邻像素组(包括目标像素以及与目标像素相邻的像素(包括目标像素上方、下方、右方、左方、对角线方向上的像素))的各个位数据执行“或”运算而取得的数据之间的比较结果中存在显著差别时,可确定输入视频将引起伪轮廓。例如,下面考虑灰度级数据为“31(011111)”的像素和灰度级数据为“32(100000)”的相邻像素。这些相邻像素之间的“或”运算的结果为“63(111111)”。取得的结果近似为原始数据“31”的两倍。如图3所示,由于可能出现显著的伪轮廓,这里可断定标准刷新率将是不够的。另一方面,在相邻像素的灰度级为“31(011111)”和“30(011110)”的例子中,“或”运算的结果为“31(011111)”。由于这些值大致相似,所以可断定标准刷新率足够。
即使相邻像素的灰度级数据是不连续的,例如值“33(100001)”和“30(011110)”,由于“或”运算的结果将为“63(111111)”,也可确定这些相邻像素将引起伪轮廓。“或”运算和数据比较使得能够识别何处可能出现伪轮廓。这样的检测还可通过位“或”运算之外的位运算来进行,例如位“与”运算。例如,在上述灰度级数据为“31(011111)”和“32(100000)”的例子中,相应位“与”运算的结果为“0(000000)”,这显著不同于原始“31(011111)”。相反,对于灰度级数据值“31(011111)”和“30(011110)”,位“与”运算的结果为“30(011110)”,这与原始灰度级数据非常接近。因此,可确定不会出现伪轮廓。
如上所述,可通过比较相邻像素的位数据来检测是否将出现伪轮廓。然而,即使存在引起伪轮廓的像素(称作“伪轮廓像素”或“伪轮廓出现位置”),如果此类像素的数量较少,则显示器上伪轮廓也将不明显。仅在某一显示区域中存在一定数量的伪轮廓像素时,伪轮廓像素才影响显示外观。由于这样的特性,可通过对某一区域中的伪轮廓像素的大致数量进行计数来估计伪轮廓程度。
例如,如图4A所示,把一个画面分成多个区域划分单元(块),区域划分单元可具有固定的位置,或者可周期性地改变位置。可通过对各个区域划分单元(块)中的伪轮廓像素进行计数来形成如图4B所示的直方图。该直方图使得能够分析确定哪些区域包括相当数量的伪轮廓像素。可以预期在包括最多数量的伪轮廓像素的区域中伪轮廓将最明显。因此,可基于该区域中的伪轮廓像素的数量来确定刷新率。
然而,仅通过对伪轮廓像素进行计数而取得的计数值可能没有准确地反映伪轮廓的视觉感知程度。例如,在两个视频信号,视频“A”的最大计数值为100,视频“B”的最大计数值为20的例子中,如果采用上述控制方法,则最大计数值为100的视频A的刷新率被设定为高于视频B的刷新率。然而,某些情况下应该针对视频B设定更高的刷新率。
例如,如图5A所示,当伪轮廓像素分散在文本周围时,伪轮廓像素(由“X”标记指示)不易于察觉。相反,如图5B所示,当伪轮廓在空白背景下排列成行时,伪轮廓变很容易被察觉。这可能是因为在文本的情况下,与观看如图5B所示的空白背景时不同,观看者将趋向于将其注意力集中于文本轮廓上,因此伪轮廓不容易察觉。另外,另一原因是人的视力趋向于聚焦于带轮廓的物体,因此当显示容易吸引视线的文本等时,伪轮廓不太会被察觉。另一方面,当观看者在如图5B所示的空白背景下看带伪轮廓的视频时,观看者的视线从一个地方移到另一地方以搜索视线关注对象。结果,吸引观看者的注意力的伪轮廓导致反复或连续的不适。另一方面,在图5A中,当视线集中于文本时,视线不太会移动。即使视线移动而引起伪轮廓,由于文本轮廓所带来的强烈印象,伪轮廓也不大可能被观看者察觉。
在评估伪轮廓像素的计数值时考虑人的视觉的这种特性使得能够计算更精确地指示实际视觉感知的值。
评估计数值可采用的方法有多种。最简单并且通常最有效的方法是取得各个区域划分单元中的伪轮廓像素的计数值与同一区域中视频的真轮廓的计数值之比(伪轮廓对比度),然后计算具有最高比率的区域划分单元中的轮廓对比度。该计算可由下式表示:

当伪轮廓彼此靠近,伪轮廓对比度变大,这使得伪轮廓更易察觉。当背景中存在很少真轮廓时,伪轮廓对比度变得更大。以这样的方式使用伪轮廓对比度使得能够不仅考虑伪轮廓像素的数量,而且考虑伪轮廓的背景中是否存在真轮廓。因此,可以定量地评估伪轮廓的可察觉性,使得所取得的值更加精确地反映实际视觉感知。
应该指出的是,可通过取伪轮廓像素的计数值与真轮廓像素的计数值之比的1/2、1/n或x次方来取得伪轮廓对比度。或者,可通过计算对数(LOG)值来定义伪轮廓对比度。当以这样的方式计算伪轮廓对比度时,即使分母较小,也可减小该计算导致极高伪轮廓对比度的可能性。
在图5A和图5B所示的例子中,如果图5A中的伪轮廓像素的最大计数值为100,图5B中为20,则即使图5A的计数值非常高,只要存在真轮廓(例如,文本),图5A的伪轮廓对比度就不会高于图5B的伪轮廓对比度,因为在任何区域中图5B中的真轮廓像素的计数值均为0。然而,由于无法计算0(零)除某一数,所以设定有限值。可通过适当设定该值来取得接近实际视觉感知的值。
接下来将详细描述在使用伪轮廓对比度的评估方法(伪轮廓对比度法)中的数据处理。图6示出数据分析电路5-5的内部构造,其中对分成N个区域的一个画面应用轮廓对比度法。首先将同时输入到数据分析电路5-5中的像素数据和周边像素数据输入伪轮廓检测器5-7和真轮廓检测器5-8中。伪轮廓检测器5-7通过位运算等估计特定像素是否将引起伪轮廓。当确定像素可能引起伪轮廓时,该像素所属区域的伪轮廓计数器5-9增加其计数。真轮廓检测器5-8确定视频中包括真轮廓的程度如何。例如,当像素数据与周边像素数据之间的差别大于某一值时,可确定存在真轮廓,使该像素(真轮廓像素、真轮廓出现位置)所属区域的真轮廓计数器5-10的计数增加。当存在伪轮廓像素时,伪轮廓计数器5-9可使其计数加一,当存在真轮廓像素时,真轮廓计数器5-10可使其计数加一。或者,这些计数器可增加与伪轮廓存在的可能性相应的值。另外,可以通过增加像素数据与周边像素数据之差,来使计数器增加与真轮廓存在的可能性相应的值。
另外,优选按照RGB颜色分别检测伪或真轮廓,并使用检测值中的最大值作为全彩单元像素的代表值。更具体地讲,可将RGB颜色各自的像素数据和周边像素数据同时输入伪轮廓检测器5-7和真轮廓检测器5-8中。可分别计算轮廓可能性和真轮廓可能性。优选的是伪轮廓计数器5-9和真轮廓计数器5-10的计数基于最大值。
在各个帧的起始点,伪轮廓计数器5-9和真轮廓计数器5-10被重置并初始化为0(零)。像素数据通常从画面的左上到右下输入。因此,可基于输入数据的顺序识别像素所属的区域划分单元。因此,检测到伪轮廓或真轮廓的像素使得该像素所属区域的伪轮廓计数器5-9或真轮廓计数器5-10之一的计数增加。当一帧周期结束时,由计数器对一个画面的伪轮廓像素和真轮廓像素的数量进行计数。
当针对一个画面的检测结束时,由计算单元5-11基于来自伪轮廓计数器5-9和真轮廓计数器5-10的值计算各个区域的伪轮廓对比度。把计算出的值中的最大值存储在寄存器5-12中。通过利用从伪轮廓计数器1至N以及真轮廓计数器1至N取得的值依次计算伪轮廓对比度值,可使用单个共享的计算单元5-11来计算伪轮廓对比度以取得最大值。刷新率控制电路5-6基于该最大值调节刷新率以输出控制信号和视频数据,以使得视频以最佳刷新率显示。
优选的是如上所述通过按帧计算轮廓对比度来设定刷新率,因为这使得装置能够快速响应于图像快速切换的视频。然而,如果是不经常显示移动图像的视频,则可针对多个帧取得一个画面的伪轮廓对比度。在这种情况下,由于N个划分单元的伪轮廓计数器5-9和真轮廓计数器5-10并非全部需要,所以可省略一些计数器。例如,如果利用一帧执行针对一个区域划分单元的检测,由于可用N个帧执行针对一个画面的检测,所以仅需要一个伪轮廓计数器5-9和一个真轮廓计数器5-10。
或者,通过提供划分数N个的伪轮廓计数器5-9和一个真轮廓计数器5-10,可利用一个画面的真轮廓计数值计算轮廓对比度。这种结构还能够充分显示轮廓,从而导致图5B的轮廓对比度高于图5A的轮廓对比度。
图7示出根据伪轮廓对比度设定刷新率的例子。基本上,伪轮廓对比度越大,刷新率设定得越高。在图7所示的例子中,当伪轮廓对比度较低时,刷新率快速增大,但随后在伪轮廓对比度到达某一水平之后缓慢变化。然而,刷新率并非必须具有这样的平滑连续变化特性。相反,刷新率可具有以阶梯方式整倍数变化或者以线性方式变化的特性。伪轮廓对比度和刷新率可通过查找表等关联起来,所述查找表等可设置在刷新率控制电路5-6内。更具体地讲,当数据分析电路5-5所计算的最大伪轮廓对比度值输入刷新率控制电路5-6中时,根据查找表设定刷新率。刷新率控制电路5-6输出控制信号和视频数据以按照所需刷新率驱动像素阵列2。
图8示出像素1的构造,而图9示出作为刷新率加速的例子的四倍速数字驱动定时图。如图8所示,像素1包括有机EL元件10、驱动晶体管11、选择晶体管12和存储电容器13。有机EL元件10的阳极和阴极分别连接至驱动晶体管11的漏极端子和所有像素共用的阴极电极9。驱动晶体管11的源极端子连接到所有像素共用的电源线8,而栅极端子连接到存储电容器13的一端,并且还连接到选择晶体管12的源极端子。存储电容器13的另一端连接到电源线8。选择晶体管12的栅极端子和漏极端子分别连接到选择线6和数据线7。应该指出的是,在图1所示的总体构造中未示出电源线8和阴极电极9。
当通过选择驱动器4选择了选择线6(设为低电平)时,选择晶体管12导通,提供给数据线7的数据电位施加到驱动晶体管11的栅极端子,以控制驱动晶体管11的导通/截止。例如,当数据线7的数据电位低时,驱动晶体管11导通,以使得电流流过有机EL元件10,有机EL元件10因此发光。相反,当数据线7的数据电位高时,驱动晶体管11截止,从而没有电流流过有机EL元件10,有机EL元件10因此将关闭。施加到驱动晶体管11的栅极端子的数据电位存储在存储电容器13中。因此,即使选择晶体管12被选择驱动器4截止(设为高电平),驱动晶体管11的导通/截止状态仍得以维持。有机EL元件10保持其发光状态(打开或关闭)直到下一子帧。应该指出的是,尽管图8中的像素1仅包括P型晶体管,但也可同时包括P型和N型晶体管,或者仅使用N型晶体管。另外,像素1可具有图8所示常规结构之外的其他结构。
图9(上部)示出在可通过6子帧显示6位灰度级的单元帧周期中的子帧结构。即,可仅通过一个单元帧显示6位灰度级。6位显示可从最低有效位SF0开始,在最高有效位SF5结束。然而,子帧并非必须按照从最低有效位到最高有效位的顺序使用。相反,所述顺序可从最高有效位到最低有效位,或者可使用随机顺序。当使用如图1所示的显示装置来执行图9上部所示的驱动时,需要在时间T以时分方式选择各个行(L0至L4),而应该控制位数据写入相应行中。更具体地讲,应该执行时分选择以使得在时间T,位数据0、1、2、3和4分别写入行L0、L1、L2、L3和L4。由于专利文献2中详细描述了此类控制方法的例子,所以这里将不再提供其说明。
如果图9(上部)所示的单元帧周期为例如1/4帧周期,则四个单元帧构成一个帧周期,如图9下部所示,导致4x速度的显示。即,可通过改变单元帧周期来改变刷新率。因此,刷新率控制电路5-6通过设定时钟周期或水平周期来生成图9所示的子帧定时,以按照单元帧周期相应于设定的刷新率的方式改变刷新率。
应该指出的是,尽管图8所示像素1由单个像素构成,但是像素1可包括两个或更多个子像素。对于这种结构,仍可按照相似的方式改变刷新率以减少伪轮廓。
另外,很显然根据本发明的实施例的技术可应用于所有类型的有机EL显示器,例如微显示器;自发光显示器,例如等离子体显示器、场发射显示器和无机EL显示器;以及光学装置,例如数字微镜装置(DMD),当以子帧型数字驱动方式对它们进行驱动时。

1.一种根据视频信号的像素数据对矩阵状排列的像素进行数字驱动来进行显示的显示装置,该显示装置包括:
驱动器,其通过以下操作对各个像素进行数字驱动:
从一个像素的像素数据取得多个位数据,将所述多个位数据分配给相应的单元帧;

2.根据权利要求1所述的显示装置,其中所述分析电路基于一个画面的视频数据检测伪轮廓出现位置的数量和真轮廓出现位置的数量,以基于检测到的数量之比分析一个画面的显示中出现伪轮廓的可能性。
3.根据权利要求2所述的显示装置,其中所述分析电路将一个画面分成多个块,并基于各个块中伪轮廓出现位置的数量与真轮廓出现位置的数量之比分析一个画面的显示中出现伪轮廓的可能性。
4.根据权利要求1至3中任一项所述的显示装置,其中所述分析电路通过比较目标像素的像素数据与所述目标像素周围的周边像素数据来确定伪轮廓是否可能出现。
5.根据权利要求1至3中任一项所述的显示装置,其中所述像素包括有机EL元件。
