Description
The invention relates to a combination of substances with two mechanically testable properties for securing the authenticity of documents of value, the use of this combination of substances for ensuring the authenticity of documents of value, a document of value with two authenticity features each having a mechanically testable physical property and a method for producing such documents of value and a method for checking the authenticity of carbonized Material or ash.
Documents of value in the sense of this invention can be all documents which have to be protected against imitation. In particular, this includes banknotes, stock papers, identification papers, but also identification cards, chip cards and the like. They can be made on the basis of cellulose or cotton material or on the basis of plastic material or from a combination of several of these materials.
To secure the value documents against imitation, the value documents are provided with authenticity features that cannot be imitated, or only with disproportionately high expenditure. As authenticity features e.g. Fluorescent substances, magnetic particles and other substances detectable on the basis of their specific physical properties are used. Authenticity features which can be verified by machine are those features which are intended in particular to be checked by machine, in contrast to features which are to be checked in a human manner, in particular visually. Such human traits are e.g. Watermarks, guilloches, intaglio prints and the like. Magnetic materials, for example, are very suitable for machine testing. They can be added to the security in the form of magnetic particles during manufacture. Such magnetic particles can be hard magnetic, i.e. generate a permanent magnetic field after their magnetization, or they can be soft magnetic, i.e. exhibit magnetization only under the influence of an external excitatory magnetic field.
However, the use of luminescent markings as a machine-detectable authenticity feature is also widely known from the prior art. A distinction is made between fluorescent substances that only emit characteristic emission radiation under excitation radiation and phosphorescent substances that emit radiation over a longer period of time even after the excitation radiation has been switched off. Various properties of the luminescent substances can be used as proof of authenticity, for example excitation and emission spectra, visibility / invisibility of the emission, a possible afterglow duration and its half-life, narrow / broadband emission. Due to these many evaluation criteria, the security against counterfeiting is additionally increased, since the counterfeiter is not aware of which property is being evaluated and must therefore be reproduced by him.
Luminescent substances which only emit in a very narrow wavelength range, such as rare earth compounds, are frequently used. Compared to broadband emitting luminescent substances, they have the advantage that their emission spectra are more characteristic than those of other substances, which is why they can be given a higher security value for machine authenticity detection. In order to increase the safety value of broadband emitting substances, their emission spectrum can be modified in a characteristic manner, as is described, for example, in DE 3 020 652.
For criminological purposes, it is helpful to use feature substances that are still detectable even after the document has been burned, in order to be able to ensure that an unrecognizable combustion residue actually comes from real documents. On the other hand, it must be prevented that the feature substances contained in the ashes of burned documents of value are not recovered and used to create counterfeits.
The object of the present invention is therefore to propose a solution with which the unique identification of a value document should be able to be carried out both on the basis of the value document itself and on the basis of its ashes, without, however, making it possible to illegally recover the authenticity feature for the production of new value documents.
This object is achieved by the features of the independent independent claims. Further developments can be found in the dependent patent claims.
The invention is based on the knowledge that the opposing objectives can be achieved by providing different physical or chemical properties which can be tested separately and which change or disappear at different temperatures. Accordingly, the document of value according to the invention has at least two mechanically testable physical or chemical properties that can be detected separately from one another, the document of value losing at least one machine-testable property at a first temperature and possibly also the other testable property at a second temperature, which differs from that first clearly differs.
The testable properties are preferably located at the same location and / or are based on the same physical or chemical phenomenon. If these are properties that are not based on the same physical phenomenon, they can be different properties of a single feature substance that at least partially disappear or change measurably at different temperatures. In addition, two feature substances are preferably used, each of which has one of the testable properties.
According to the invention, when selecting the testable properties, it must also be taken into account that two temperature ranges must be observed in connection with the combustion of valuable documents. Firstly, the self-firing temperature, i.e. the temperature at which the document of value, for example a bank note set on fire by a lighter, burns under atmospheric conditions and, on the other hand, the usual destruction temperature of the document of value in high-temperature furnaces. Because documents of value are destroyed by the issuing bodies in high-temperature furnaces with oxygen support or the like if they are no longer fit for circulation due to the degree of soiling or damage. The usual annihilation temperature is around 1000 ° C and more. The self-firing temperature, on the other hand, is between 400 DEG C and 500 DEG C, well below the annihilation temperature.
Since the destruction of documents of value takes place in large quantities, according to the invention it must be ensured in any case that unauthorized persons cannot recover authenticity features from the combustion residues of the destroyed documents of value, which allow imitation of genuine documents of value.
Möglichkeit Accordingly, the testable properties (E 1, E 2, etc.) that can be used in the context of the invention must meet one of the following conditions, T 1 denoting the self-firing temperature and T 2 the annihilation temperature: 1st possibility
The value document loses the first property E 1 below T 1 and retains the property E 2 above T 1 and T 2.
2. Möglichkeit In this constellation, the temperature-stable, testable property E 2 can be used to prove that the ash comes from a real value document. However, no statements can be made about the type of combustion - combustion under atmospheric conditions or destruction. 2nd possibility
The document of value retains the properties E 1 and E 2 above the temperature T 1 and loses the property E 1 below the temperature T 2 while it retains the property E 2 also above T 2.
3. Möglichkeit In this case, it is not only possible to determine on the basis of property E 2 that the ashes come from a real value document, but also in what way the value document was burned. Because the ash still has both properties E 1 and E 2, the document of value was burned under atmospheric conditions, whereas the ash only has property E 2, the document of value was at least exposed to the destruction temperature. 3rd possibility
Das Wertdokument verliert die Eigenschaft E 1 unter T 1 und die Eigenschaft E 2 unter T 2 . The value document loses property E 1 under T 1 and property E 2 under T 2.
4. Möglichkeit In this case, the ash of a document of value that has been burned above the destruction temperature has neither property E 1 nor property E 2. The ash produced during official destruction is therefore neutral in terms of its characteristics. If the ash still has the property E 2, this is considered as evidence of the combustion under atmospheric conditions. 4th possibility
The value document retains the properties E 1 and E 2 above T 1 and loses both properties below T 2.
Here, too, combustion can be verified under atmospheric conditions, so that accidentally burned documents are still recognized as real value documents and can possibly be exchanged for undamaged documents. If the ash has neither property E 1 nor property E 2, then in this case no statements can be made as to whether it was originally a genuine document of value.
A wide variety of effects, e.g. Luminescence, magneticism, conductivity, chemical reactions can be used. It is only essential for the invention that at least two physical or chemical properties can be evaluated, at least one of which is irreversibly changed or completely disappears above a certain first temperature and the second property is retained above the first temperature.
According to a preferred embodiment, the document of value can be provided with two luminescent substances which lose their luminescent properties at different temperatures. Characteristic combinations of organic and inorganic luminescent substances are particularly suitable, since organic luminescent substances lose their luminescent property even at low temperatures, while a large number of inorganic luminescent substances are temperature-stable.
Various dyes, such as methylene blue, rodamine, anthrazine, quinazolone, benzozazine or the like, but also rare earth chelates or rare earth acetonates are suitable as unstable organic luminescent substances. Inorganic stable luminescent substances which can be used in the context of the invention are rare earth-doped host lattices. Calcium tungstate, yttrium garnet, yttrium vanadate, yttrium oxysulfide or the like are preferably used as the host lattice. For invisible coding, the emission wavelength of which is in the IR range, the rare earths neodymium, ytterbium, praseodymium, erbium or holmium are preferably used in host grids containing chromium or iron. The compounds containing rare earths are used with preference since their emission bands are very narrow and are therefore very suitable for machine testing.
Instead of the unstable organic luminescent substances, however, inorganic unstable luminescent substances, such as silver or copper / cerium-doped zinc sulfide, can also be used.
According to a further embodiment, different magnetic materials can also be used which either irreversibly change their magnetic behavior or completely lose them at certain temperatures. Iron oxide (Fe 3 O 4), black chromium oxide and barium ferrite are examples of temperature-stable magnetic materials with medium-hard to hard magnetic properties.
On the other hand, metallic magnetic materials, such as iron or cobalt in powder form or in the form of thin layers, are not very temperature-resistant. They show soft to hard magnetic properties. Cobalt-iron or nickel-iron alloys are also soft magnetic and highly flammable. Another example of a very hard magnetic, yet easily flammable material is cobalt samarium (SmCo 5).
The easily flammable magnetic materials lose their magnetic properties completely at low temperatures or change their magnetic behavior in a very characteristic way. In contrast, the magnetic properties of the temperature-stable magnetic materials remain unchanged.
If the value documents are documents from a series, but to which different countervalues are assigned - such as Banknotes with different denominations - it can also be advantageous to provide the different denominations with different property pairs, so that a check of the combustion residues not only allows statements about "real" or "wrong", but also about the special category, e.g. Denomination of the value document. This would be particularly useful for banknotes, since the combustion residues can often no longer tell which denomination it was originally from, but the owner would like to prove that the ash comes from certain banknotes.
The feature substances can be introduced in various ways. If the document of value is made of paper or has a paper layer, the feature substances can be mixed evenly with the paper pulp during the paper production or sprayed, printed on or otherwise applied to the finished, still wet paper web in certain areas.
If the document of value has plastic material, the feature substances can also be admixed to the plastic material during the preparation of the plastic and processed with it to form foils or fibers. These foils or fibers can then be used directly as a value document or for the production of value documents. It is also possible to embed the film, for example cut into strips, as security thread in the paper during paper production. It is also possible to add melange fibers or planchettes with the feature substances. Here too, as with the security thread, the substances can be incorporated into the material of the mottled fibers or planchettes themselves in volume or printed on the surface or dyed with them in a dye bath.
Another option is to use plastic film as a cover film for an ID card or passport.
Alternatively, the value document can also be printed with a printing ink containing the feature substance (s). However, the feature substances can also be contained in different printing inks. Any printing process can be used, in particular gravure printing, thermal transfer printing, hot stamping, screen printing.
Beispiel 1 The following examples briefly outline the range of possibilities. example 1
The paper pulp for the production of security paper is admixed with two luminescent substances which have a different emission spectrum before sheet formation. The luminescent substance that is temperature-stable according to the invention is Y 3 Al 5 O 12: Tb, which shows a very characteristic emission spectrum in the green wavelength range. ZnS: CuCl is used for the less stable luminescent substance, but its emission, which is also in the green spectral range, disappears at temperatures of 700 ° C. The emission spectra of the two luminescent substances are both in the green spectral range, but they differ so much with regard to the course of their emission spectra that they can be detected separately from one another by measurement technology.
Beispiel 2 If the finished paper is lit and burned under normal atmospheric conditions, both luminescent substances remain detectable. The less temperature-stable ZnS phosphor is only destroyed when the paper is burned in an incinerator at over 1000 ° C. The inorganic, terbium-doped luminescent material, on the other hand, survives these temperatures undamaged, so that the ash can be recognized from the characteristic spectrum of Y 3 Al 5 O 12: Tb as originating from real documents, but in which it can also be proven that it is not under normal atmospheric conditions Conditions has arisen. Example 2
Two luminescent substances with different emission spectra are added to a printing ink. The temperature-stable luminescent substance is a zinc silicate: manganese (CD 112 from Allied Signal), which emits in the green wavelength range. For the unstable luminescent substance, a europium chelate compound from the thenoyl trifluoroacetonate class (CD 335 from Allied Signal) is used, which fluoresces in the red wavelength range.
Beispiel 3 If the color is applied to any carrier, the mixed color of both fluorescent pigments is obtained as a visual impression. If the carrier is exposed to temperatures above 800 ° C. in a combustion furnace, the europium chelate compound is destroyed. The inorganic fluorescent substance, on the other hand, survives this temperature undamaged, so that the ashes can be recognized as real documents based on their characteristic fluorescence spectrum. At the same time, however, it can also be demonstrated that it did not arise under normal atmospheric conditions. Example 3
Beispiel 4 A resin matrix, e.g. based on the polyaddition of polyfunctional isocyanates, melamine and benzamide, an inorganic fluorescent substance, yttrium oxide: Europium (CD 106 from Allied Signal) together with an organic fluorescent substance from the class of benzothiazoles (CD 333 from Allied Signal) with yellow-green fluorescence during the Plastic synthesis added. This gives a feature substance in the form of a powder which has an orange fluorescence under UV excitation. If the luminescent pigment produced in this way is mixed with a printing ink and applied to paper, a paper with orange fluorescence is obtained. If the paper is exposed to temperatures above 800 ° C in a combustion furnace, the organic fluorescent substance is destroyed. The inorganic fluorescent substance, on the other hand, survives this temperature undamaged, so that the ashes can be recognized as real documents based on their characteristic fluorescence spectrum. Here too, however, it can be demonstrated that the ash did not arise under normal atmospheric conditions. In this case the ash has a red fluorescence. Example 4
Beispiel 5 Two different offset colors are one with an inorganic fluorescent pigment, calcium silicate: manganese: lead (CD 110 from Allied Signal), which has an orange fluorescence or with an organic pigment based on anthranilic acid (CD 329 from Allied Signal), the one shows blue fluorescence, mixed. The printing inks thus obtained are alternately applied to a film in the form of a code, then cut into fine strips and used in the form of a security thread in paper production. If the security marked in this way is exposed to temperatures above 800 ° C in a combustion furnace, the organic fluorescent substance is destroyed. The inorganic fluorescent substance, on the other hand, survives this temperature undamaged, so that the ashes can be recognized as real documents based on their characteristic fluorescence spectrum. At the same time, however, it can also be demonstrated that it did not arise under normal atmospheric conditions. In this case, the ash has an orange fluorescence. Example 5
Beispiel 6 In this case, the fluorescent substances used in Example 4 are mixed once in a printing ink and on the other hand in the paper, as described in Example 1. After the printing ink has been applied to the paper produced in this way, a document is obtained which has an orange fluorescence in the print and a blue fluorescence in the paper. In this case, the ash has an orange fluorescence. Example 6
A printing ink for gravure, tampon or screen printing with cobalt samarium powder (SmCo 5) is produced. For this purpose, 1 part of vinylite as a binder is mixed with 1 to 2 parts of magnetic pigment and 0.5 to 3 parts of ethyl acetate as a solvent. The amount of solvent depends on the printing process used. If the ink is printed in gravure printing, more solvent is required, but less for the production of a screen printing ink.
A second ink of the above composition is made with carbonyl iron powder (99% Fe). Both printing inks are printed as a barcode on a plastic film, possibly with the addition of further color pigments, which is then cut into security threads. These threads are completely embedded in the paper during paper production.
This combination of features made of cobalt samarium and carbonyl iron offers a high level of security against counterfeiting, since it is not commercially available and has very characteristic magnetic properties. Cobalt samarium is extremely hard magnetic with a remanence in the range of 40,000 Oe, while carbonyl iron only has a remanence of less than 10 Oe.
When the security is burned under atmospheric conditions, the cobalt samarium is converted into completely non-magnetic oxides and the carbonyl iron becomes iron oxides Fe 2 O 3 and Fe 3 O 4 with a significantly higher remanence of approx. 200 Oe to 400 Oe compared to carbonyl iron.
Beispiel 7 The hard magnetic properties are lost through the combustion, while the soft magnetic properties are retained, albeit in a slightly different form. Example 7
The magnetic pigments named cobalt samarium and carbonyl iron mentioned in Example 6 can also be mixed with offset, letterpress or steel engraving inks. For this, 0.3 to 1 part of magnetic pigment and 1 part of linseed oil varnish are mixed. Depending on the printing process, the varnish is rubbed with more or less linseed oil thinner (offset) or firmer (steel engraving).
These printing inks are used to print a security either in the same place or in different places in any characters or patterns.
Charred or burned material, which presumably comes from a value document according to the invention, is tested on the basis of the verifiable physical or chemical properties of the feature substance. The testable property is automatically evaluated and compared with stored reference values. If a value document is said to have been accidentally burned under atmospheric conditions, the measured values of the testable property are compared with the expected reference values for the temperature range above approx. 400 to 500 ° C and below approx. 1000 ° C. Only if the measured values and the reference values match is it a real value document.
At the same time, it can also be proven whether the supposed document of value was actually burned under atmospheric conditions. If the measured values agree with the reference values above the destruction temperature of approx. 1000 ° C, this may indicate that ashes have been fraudulently removed from a destruction process and declared as an accidentally burned document of value against an undamaged document of value to be exchanged at the issuing agency.
In order to make the identification of the ashes even more reliable, the feature substances or characteristic components of the feature substances can be detected using trace analysis methods and their concentration can be determined. Processes such as atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS), atomic emission spectroscopy (AES) in the discharge spectrum, and electron beam-excited X-ray emission spectroscopy (EBMA) are suitable for this.
In these trace analysis methods, in particular the feature substances that are not contained in the ashes of documents not secured according to the invention are detected. In example 1 described above, the materials yttrium, terbium, zinc and copper and the concentration ratio of these substances are evaluated. In contrast, in example 7 the presence of the substances iron, cobalt and samarium is checked and the concentration ratio of these substances to one another is evaluated.
