Abstract
The bridge opens at the middle and comprises two movable halves. On the water reaching a predetermined level, it flows through ports (1) into tanks (2) coupled (3,4) to the bridge halves, so that these swing upwards when a predetermined water level is reached. The tanks can be coupled to the bridge halves via ropes or chains reeved round pullets (5) on masts (6). The tanks and halves can form a unit operating on the principle of a swing and then halves can have protruding levers engaging with the tanks.
Description
Many bridges can become insurmountable obstacles during high water. They slow down and stagnate the water flow, especially when it carries a lot of Geischiebe, often so strong that the dams are washed over and great damage to natural and cultural assets. Such bridges should be flipped up during high water. On the one hand, the water can continue to flow unhindered, and on the other hand, additional dams are created on both sides of the bridge, which prevent flooding.
Such a bridge could easily be constructed using technical means (e.g. hydraulic systems or motors with electronic control). However, it is a major effort to maintain such systems. They are susceptible and tend to fail at the crucial moment, probably with extreme external conditions. In addition, dangers are often recognized too late or not at all and the decision-makers are under so much pressure that wrong decisions are made.
These problems are avoided with the presented idea. A simple mechanism opens the bridge automatically. The design can be used to specify the level at which the system should be activated. The system is practically maintenance-free and insensitive to faults. The bridge consists of two moving parts. Lateral openings 1 are located in the dam at a defined height (critical water level). In the event of flooding, the water flows through these openings into tank 2, which are located in a shaft. With increasing weight, the containers move downwards in the shaft and pull the bridge up completely via a deflection roller or a tilting movement. The bridge then lets the water run free and also serves as a protective dam.
Different designs of such a bridge can be distinguished:
& cirf & In the case of a bridge as shown in Figure 1, the water tanks transfer their movement to the bridge using ropes or chains 4. The rope is guided from the container over a deflection roller 5, which is mounted on the mast 6, and fastened to the bridge.
& cirf & The two bridge parts consist of a kind of support structure 8, which protrude sideways over the bridge. The water tanks 2 hang on it and use the overhang of the bridge parts as a lever to fold up the bridge (Fig. 2).
& cirf & The two bridge parts form a solid unit with the water tanks. The bridge parts are folded up according to the principle of a swing (Fig. 3).
